It’s game week for Liberty Football, but Mike Jarvis’ journey to this moment is a powerful reminder that some of the most important work happens long before the lights come on. In this conversation, Mike shares what feels different about this year’s team, why their word “STANDARD” has to become more than a slogan and instead shape the way you show up every single day, and what it means to write your own story rather than be defined by the past. We also go beyond football to talk about perseverance, identity, faith, vulnerability, and the setbacks and waiting seasons that shape us into who we’re meant to become. Mike challenges us to not waste the wait by recognizing that just because we can’t see the results yet doesn’t mean God isn’t doing something significant in us. From chasing a dream when the path doesn’t go according to plan to having the courage to ask for help when life gets heavy, this conversation is a reminder that dreams don’t quit, people do. So keep showing up, keep trusting, keep becoming, and make sure the standard you talk about becomes the standard you live. What does it really take to become stronger, not just physically, but mentally, relationally, and spiritually? In this episode, we sit down with Liberty University Director of Athletic Performance for Football, Coach Chad Scott, for a conversation that goes far beyond the weight room. Coach Scott shares what he’s seeing inside Liberty Football as a new season approaches, why their word “Standard” has to become more than a slogan, and what separates talented people from those who actually maximize their potential. We unpack the power of discipline, shared suffering, player-led leadership, and why mastering the fundamentals of sleep, nutrition, hydration, and breathing can matter more than chasing the latest performance hack. But the conversation takes a deeply personal turn as Chad opens up about walking alongside his wife, Beth, through her battle with cancer and what that journey has taught him about strength, surrender, faith, and trusting God when the circumstances you desperately want to change are completely outside of your control. Whether you’re an athlete, leader, spouse, parent, or simply trying to become the person God has called you to be, this conversation will challenge you to raise your standard while redefining what it truly means to be strong. Ever feel like you do the right thing but get nowhere, meanwhile everyone else gets ahead? As we dive into Book 3 of our Psalms journey, we enter what many call the "valley" of the psalms. This section of psalms mirrors the book of Leviticus with a focus on worship and the sanctuary, but with a dramatic twist. The sanctuary lies in complete ruin, enemies are inside the gates, and God's people are left asking how true worship is even possible when everything around them has crumbled. In Psalms 73-80, we walk through the honest struggles of Asaph, and his worship-leading descendants, who function almost like an ancient record label passing down songs through generations. We'll watch Asaph's entire mindset flip from bitter jealousy to total peace the second he steps into God's sanctuary. This collection of ancient songs offers us a real and sacred playlist for our hardest days, from wrestling with deep loss to passing on faith to our kids.In our Psalms 73-80 Bible study, we cover:[3:34] Psalms Book 3: The Ultimate Record Label – Who Asaph and the "Sons of Asaph" actually are and how their music guild led worship across generations.[7:31] Psalm 73: Perspective Shift – why Asaph knows just how you feel when you scroll through social media and a wave of envy washes over you, and how he got past those feelings in a way that could still help us today. [12:17] Psalm 74: Grief and Healing – Why acknowledging what was lost in Psalm 74 is the essential first step before moving toward hope and rebuilding.[16:07] Psalms 75-76: God's Fair Judgement – How to praise God whenever you feel the wicked are winning, because you know He will be a fair judge.[27:51] Psalms 77-78: Passing the Torch – Why telling the next generation about God's miracles is a vital mandate for keeping faith alive today.[35:30] Psalms 79-80: An Allegory of Hope – Why Psalm 80 describes Israel as a vine and how we can pray for restoration in our own life.Psalms Show Notes:Psalms RoadmapPsalms Prayer ListPsalms Playlist on Apple MusicPsalms Playlist on SpotifyPhil Wickham - Psalm 8 (Hallé) [Official Music Video]ACTS Prayer GuideScene from The ChosenGroup Discussion Questions for Psalms 73-80[8:07] Asaph says his feet almost slipped when he envied the wicked. What "successful" people or images tempt you to compare your life unfavorably to theirs, and what would it look like to bring that comparison to God in prayer in His sanctuary, His church?[28:16] Psalm 78 describes a command to tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord. This week, who is one person “in the next generation” you could tell about something you've learned from Psalms?[35:48] As with the vine of Israel in Psalm 80, what is one place in your life where you feel a deep need for God to restore you physically, mentally, emotionally, or spiritually? Nutrition Nugget! Bite-sized bonus episodes offer tips, tricks and approachable science. This week, Jenn is talking about what's in your cup, the mindset story that's been sitting with her all week. As Salad With a Side of Fries starts to celebrate its seventh anniversary, this week's Nutrition Nugget centers on a simple question a Buddhist monk once asked his students, one that Jenn says stopped her in her tracks the moment she heard it. It starts with a spilled cup of coffee and ends somewhere much deeper, touching on stress, community, and the parts of ourselves we don't always notice we're carrying until life gives us a bump. Jenn ties it back to two themes she returns to on the show, but this time with a twist that feels personal. So what is in your cup? And more importantly, what spills out when someone bumps into you? Jenn has thoughts that will likely change how you move through the rest of your week. Like what you're hearing? Be sure to check out the full-length episodes of new releases every Wednesday. The Nick Hiter Show — Give People Their Flowers Before They Die (Feat. Derek Young)In this one, I sit down with Derek Young — DY — for one of the most honest, layered conversations we've had on the show. Derek's a leadership and executive coach who's guided well over a thousand leaders, and he brings a rare mix of wisdom, faith, and hard-earned perspective. We get into his concept of "honest positivity" — how the way you speak to yourself literally reshapes your outcomes — and why insecurity quietly kills creativity, productivity, and growth. Derek opens up about raising his daughter Kristianna, who has Down syndrome, and how she reshaped his worldview, his leadership, and his sense of purpose. We talk about treating everyone like they have special needs, leadership as service instead of status, the "Joseph season" where hardship forges you for what's next, and the mantra that's stuck with me — give people their flowers before they die.Key Takeaways:- Honest positivity: what you think, frame, say, and hear, you plant — so speak to yourself in the affirmative.- Insecurity kills creativity, productivity, and growth — in you and in the people you lead.- Don't let labels — yours or anyone else's — limit who you can become.- Treat everyone like they have special needs, because everyone is carrying something.- Leadership isn't about your title or status; it's about what the people become.- Hardship is a "Joseph season" — it forges you for responsibility you aren't ready for yet.- Give people their flowers before they die: make appreciation specific, intentional, and on time.- If it doesn't come to you naturally, schedule it until it becomes muscle memory.Chapters:00:00 Opening Reflections and Personal Presence02:50 "Do It Now" and Acting With Urgency06:11 Insecurity and How It Blocks Growth08:02 Honest Positivity Explained15:35 Kristianna's Diagnosis and Its Impact18:57 The Perspective Shift on Down Syndrome31:25 The Joseph Story: Hardship as Preparation37:44 "What Doesn't Kill You Might Just Kill You"42:03 "I May Not Be Cute, But I'm Compassionate and Confidential"44:29 "Give People Their Flowers Before They Die"About Derek Young:Derek Young — known as DY — is a motivational speaker and culture and career strategist who helps individuals, keynote audiences, and C-suite leaders rapidly transform their culture with real, practical solutions. His insight is born from decades in serious work situations: he conducted systems, financial, and operational audits for the Federal Reserve System in the mid-'80s, helped establish communication protocols for the collections division at Sprint's global headquarters, and strengthened the first diversity pipelines for Fortune 1000 companies in Middle Tennessee through INROADS. He went on to serve as Dollar General's first head of corporate social responsibility and first head of continuous process improvement, and as Cracker Barrel's first leader of diversity, inclusion, and community outreach. Raised by his mother and grandmother in the Blumeyer housing project in St. Louis, DY entered high school at 12, college at 16, and corporate America at 20. Above everything, he leads with his faith and his family — he and his wife Allyson are the proud parents of Kayla, Kelton, Kendall, and Kristianna — guided by his life motto: "God First, Others Second, Dreams Third."Follow and contact:Derek Young (DY): @dyspeaks | derekyoungspeaks.comInstagram: @nickhiterNickhiter.comSubscribe on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/NickHiterFollow and Rate us on Spotify: https://spotify.com/NickHiterFollow and Rate us on Apple Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/NickHiterFollow and Rate us on iHeartRadio: https://www.iheart.com/NickHiter

Today's episode is a lil' perspective shift for the days you feel small. For the days when you are waiting for other people to make you feel seen . . .Waiting for the reply.Waiting for the recognition.Waiting for someone to tell you you're doing a good job.Because whether it's your work, your body, your content, or even a message left on read… it's easy to start tying your worth to how other people respond. So today, we're shifting that with a little visual, and perspective shift that wake us up a bit and stop standing in our own friggin way. We're covering:✔️ A  visual to break free from validation loops✔️ How approval-seeking quietly shows up in everyday life✔️ Why your worth can't be measured by response or recognition✔️ A tool to come back to yourself when you feel smallIf you've been feeling overlooked, under-recognized, or like your effort only matters when it's seen, this one's for you.Big thanks to our sponsor, Boiron. The Hula Hoop Principle: A Simple Leadership Perspective Shift - Episode 340

Dominate Your Day

In this episode of Dominate Your Day, I share about the Hula Hoop Principle a simple but transformative way to rethink leadership and personal responsibility. Introduced to me by my therapist many years ago, this principle has completely shifted my perspective. I've noticed that leaders exhaust themselves trying to control others while neglecting the one thing they fully own themselves. The "hula hoop" represents everything within your control (your thoughts, actions, and growth), while everything outside it simply isn't yours to carry. Clarity of personal mission is the antidote to burnout and reactivity. Especially in a rapidly changing world shaped by AI and shifting career paths, your mission acts as an internal compass guiding decisions, protecting your energy, and helping you lead with intention instead of reaction. Real leadership starts within. When you focus on changing yourself first, everything else begins to shift. Top 3 Takeaways: You only have control over what's "inside your hula hoop" stop spending energy on what isn't yours. A clear personal mission acts as your GPS in uncertain, fast-changing environments. Lasting impact begins with internal change, not external control. Why beliefs can either cap our potential or push us toward possibility. What you believe about yourself could be holding you back. Fortunately, Nir Eyal says beliefs aren't truths — and you can choose new ones.Eyal is a former lecturer at Stanford Graduate School of Business and the Stanford d.school, a celebrated author, and a renowned expert on human behavior and potential. His latest book, Beyond Belief, reveals how limiting beliefs — like “I'm a bad communicator” — quietly shape what we see, feel, and do. “A belief doesn't have to be true” to limit our potential, he says. But the same holds in reverse: a belief doesn't have to be true to expand who and what we can become. “Beliefs are tools, not truths. It just has to be useful.”In this episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, Eyal and host Matt Abrahams explore how to identify the beliefs that hold us back — and how to replace them with ones that propel us forward. From keeping a belief journal to practicing perspective-shifting “turnarounds,” Eyal offers practical tips for rewriting the stories we tell ourselves and becoming the people we want to be.To listen to the extended Deep Thinks version of this episode, please visit FasterSmarter.io/premium.Episode Reference Links:Nir EyalNir's Book: Beyond Belief104. What does it really mean to advance the Kingdom of God? In this message from Matthew 16, Pastor Woody challenges us to stop seeing life only from a human perspective and begin seeing it from a spiritual one. Jesus calls His followers to deny themselves, take up their cross, and follow Him. That means surrendering our plans, our pride, and sometimes even our comfort so that God's Kingdom can move forward through our lives. In this sermon you'll discover: • Why your values determine the direction of your life • The difference between advancing your kingdom and advancing God's Kingdom • The spiritual authority Jesus has given believers • Why seeing life from only a human perspective is dangerous • What you may need to give up to follow Jesus fully If we want to see lives transformed, disciples made, and the gospel spread, it begins with surrender. The question is simple: What is God asking you to give up so His Kingdom can advance through you?

A few episodes ago my guest Kevin said that a "miracle" can just be a shift in perspective. I absolutely love that idea and today you and I are going to discuss the perspective shift that "rejection is protection." Typically when we are rejected for anything, or by someone, we feel it is based on our value - that we aren't "good enough." She went from feeling postpartum, overwhelmed, depressed, and nearly 240 pounds to completing 100-mile ultramarathons. But this is not an episode about running. It's about identity. We talk about what happens when you stop using exercise to punish your body and start using it to care for it. We unpack why running alone won't make you thin, why it often makes you hungrier, and how reframing movement can completely change your relationship with food. She shares how she went “cold turkey” into keto and intermittent fasting, lost 95 pounds in a year, then faced carb fear when she reintroduced balance for marathon training. She gained some weight back — and didn't panic. We discuss maintenance as awareness, not obsession, and thinking in seasons instead of days.We also dive into mom guilt, modeling strength for your kids, the fear of regaining weight, and the mindset required to walk through the “pain cave” — those moments when you want to quit. This episode is about learning to keep promises to yourself. It's about meeting yourself in hard moments. It's about realizing that wanting to quit isn't the crime — quitting is.If you've ever felt stuck, afraid of gaining it back, or unsure whether you're “that kind of person,” this conversation will help you think differently. And new thinking creates new results.Listen for the mindset. On this episode of The Jon Gordon Podcast, I sit down with Steve Robinson, pastor, leadership practitioner, and author of the upcoming book Soul Leadership. Together, we dive deep into the vital connection between leadership, trauma, and healing, exploring how leaders can move from burnout and brokenness to wholeness and real impact. Steve opens up about his personal journey, sharing honestly about years of compounding trauma—including the devastation of Hurricane Katrina and the intense pressures of leading a growing church. These experiences led him to the edge of burnout, and ultimately to a powerful path of healing and discovery. Drawing from research, theology, therapy, neuroscience, and his own life, Steve reveals why caring for a leader's soul is so central to personal and organizational success. Throughout our conversation, several key themes emerge: the difference between simple exhaustion and deeper trauma, the science behind how stress and adversity affect the brain, the critical role faith and community play in emotional healing, and how adversity can become the catalyst for wisdom, empathy, and post-traumatic growth. Steve breaks down practical strategies for building resilience, the process of healing both brain and mind, and why true leadership starts with inner wholeness and connection. If you're a leader navigating challenges or want to support those around you, this episode is packed with encouragement and insight. Steve's story and research are a powerful reminder that your pain can become your purpose—and that transformation is possible when you lean into healing, connection, and the power of your soul. You'll walk away inspired and equipped to face setbacks and emerge even stronger.   About Steve, Steve Robinson is a pastor, speaker, and author and the founding pastor of Church of the King—a growing multisite church with campuses spread across the US and internationally. Under his leadership, Church of the King has launched new locations from South Louisiana to Cape Town, South Africa, and built a thriving online community that reaches people around the world with a message of hope and purpose.
