At the beginning of the fourth month of the Gregorian calendar, April, spring begins in the northern hemisphere, awakening the senses and feelings dormant during the winter. Literature, poetry and songs have given an account of this state of euphoria and uneasiness, of change and search for new emotions. In this episode, through a few songs, we will give an account of that state of mind in which we are immersed in April and spring. At the end of April every year we celebrate International Jazz Day. Thus, spring also serves to celebrate the variety of music, styles, sensibilities and moods that jazz offers us. Although we could devote the entire episode to versions of a single song, each with a different personality, we are going to celebrate jazz and spring with 5 standards. April Pett is a breath of fresh air keeping the Frenchy vibes fluttering for many tourists in Paris. She hosts custom tours in Paris, Versailles, Chablis and Champagne and does so with such a lovely vibrant positivity!Coming to live in Paris from a small town in Canada, April first visited France when she graduated high school and her love affair with the French capital began. After more than a decade living there, she still hasn't lost the wonder in her eyes every time she sees the iconic symbols surrounding her. Wandering around the city is still like an outdoor gallery for her, as April says there is always something new to see or find even after daily walks down particular petites rues! Her main rule though, is to "always look up". So many people miss what is right in front of them by burying their heads in a map or phone, or only looking at ground level. Always look up!**Louise Prichard is the host of the Loulabelle's FrancoFiles podcast.**Other Loulabelle's links:FrancoFile Fix on YouTubeLoulabelle's FrancoFiles Spotify Playlist Loulabelle's FrancoFiles InstagramLoulabelle's FrancoFiles website

In 1933 Billie Holiday made her first recordings, with Benny Goodman. Two years later, a series of recordings with Teddy Wilson and members of Count Basie’s band brought her wider recognition and launched her career as the leading jazz singer of her time. She toured with Basie and with Artie Shaw in 1937 and 1938 and in the latter year opened at the plush Café Society in New York City. In the early 40s she began to perform exclusively in cabarets and in concert. Her recordings between 1936 and 1942 marked her peak years. During that period she was often associated with saxophonist Lester Young, who gave her the nickname “Lady Day.” Enjoy. ---- Join the conversation on Facebook at ---- https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100008232395712 ---- or by email at: dannymemorylane@gmail.com ---- You’ll hear: 1) They Can't Take That Away From Me 2) Ain't Nobody's Business If I Do 3) A Foggy Day 4) You Go To My Head 5) What Is This Thing Called Love 6) Stars Fell On Alabama 7) Speak Low (When You Speak, Love) 8) As Time Goes By 9) Some Other Spring 10) Easy To Love 11) I've Got My Love To Keep Me Warm 12) I Can't Believe That You're In Love With Me 13) Everything I Have Is Yours 14) Embraceable You 15) Come Rain Or Come Shine 16) April In Paris 17) The Saint Louis Blues
April in Paris; congers up warm sunshine, flowering trees, sidewalk cafés and lovers in love. Well, don't be surprised if April in Paris isn't quite as you planned. Join me as I reminisce about my first trip to Paris in April 1988 and then compare it to our last trip to Paris, September 2019. Things have changed, in 31 years, but one thing hasn't... things don't always go as you expect. Even though the adventure may not unfold the way you imagine. That's okay! Just as in life, if you remain calm, stay flexible, and look for alternatives, you can still create memories that will stay with you forever.

Jumpin at the Woodside 2. Cherry Point 3. Broadway 4. Bubbles 5. Softly With Feeling 6. Queer Street 7. Out the window 8. You for Me 9. Motten Swing 10. One O'clock Jump 11. Jessica's Day 12. Swinging the Blues 13. Who Me 14. April In Paris
Imagine the call from the brass at NBC: “Bobby, you've been bouncing around on Monday and Tuesday Night, but we need you for next Friday and Saturday night-and we'll give you a half hour”. Well, that may not have been the way it went down, but indeed for reasons unknown, Bob's show did indeed get those coveted April nights, and was in fact bulked out to almost 25 minutes. Here's the Friday night show: Bob leading the quartet, with Ralph Collier on drums and percussion, redoubtable Ray Sherman on keyboards, and the new kid: Irving Eddy on bass. Who is Irving Eddy? He's good enough to sub for Jud De Naut for the evening (Jud will be back tomorrow night). So after our “Sweet Georgia Brown” intro, the guys play “Hot Canary”, written by Paul Nero and often used to show off chops whether on violin, trumpet, or right here on guitar. Bob keeps this canary as cool as can be. Next up, song star Margo Powers sings “At Long Last Love”, then the quartet (with Ray on organ) walks through “April In Paris”. After that, from South Pacific it's “Wonderful Guy”. Bob introduces two new tunes: “Need You” and “Butterfingers”. Margo returns with “Dreamer With A Penny”, then it's Bob's original tune “A Gal In Malibu”. Margo's final tune is “Fine And Dandy” before the quartet blazes through a bravura performance of “'S Wonderful”. 'S Wonderful to have Bob on the air for twenty-five minutes!
The romantic (or failed romantic) "April In Paris" is the subject of this week's Same Difference. Join Johnny and AJ as they examine several different versions of this Jazz standard. And what's that? They might disagree on something for a change?
On chante français!
