Send us a textJoin us on this week's episode as we discuss the the 1970 album by Thunderclap Newman: Hollywood Dream. Thunderclap Newman were comprised of Townshend protege (drummer, songwriter and lead singer) Speedy Keen, a 15-year-old guitar prodigy named Jimmy McColluch, and the band's namesake - the eccentric self-taught piano player Andy "Thunderclap" Newman. Hollywood Dream (their one and only album) was recorded to capitalize on the success of Thunderclap Newman's surprising number 1 UK hit "Something in the Air." The band was the brainchild of Pete Townshend and Who manager/producer, Kit Lambert. Townshend had been working on separate projects for each when the when his work on the Who's Tommy forced him scale back his outside interests. His solution was to cobble together a band featuring the three uneasy cohorts from different musical backgrounds. The result is an album that showcases each members strengths, and while it makes for compelling listen, it is often times a frustrating one. Upon its release, Hollywood Dream was met with critical raves and commercial disinterest. But the album, and the story behind it, make for one heck of a rock and roll tale. In this week's episode, we're joined by my longtime friend and music aficionado Shaun Rohland to celebrate the 1969 flower power anthem “Something In the Air” by Thunderclap Newman. We dive into how this song - with its reminder that “we got to get together sooner or later” - perfectly embodies the spirit of its era. Exploring the band's intriguing history and its connections to The Who, we ponder whether there truly was something in the air that propelled this one-hit wonder to iconic status. Many of the great LP cuts from the 60s and 70s were played here on Tales Vinyl Tells, hosted on StudioMillsWellness.com, before March 2022 when Tales Vinyl Tells got an hour slot on Wednesdays at 5 central time on RadioFreeNashville to carry on with the mission. Since my goal was and remains to not repeat too many tunes, except for replays of course, there are some killers that need to be repeated. Like, Jefferson Airplane at Woodstock. I love to hear Grace announce early that Sunday morning in 1969, “You've heard the heavy groups, now you'll hear morning maniac music. Yeh, it's a New Dawn……. Good morning, People!” and the Airplane launches into Volunteers (of America). Like, Joe Walsh and the James Gang, Thunderclap Newman and Revolution. Those last two were the first two played as a great progressive album rock radio station went on-air at Lake Worth beach, Florida in 1970 (?). That being WMUM-FM, lovingly known as Mother. And it was one. I loved my Mother and the people there that made it happen. Kerry Bogard, Pat Sullender, Bill Davis, Gil Colquitt(RIP), Galen Barker, Michael Weber, Tom Lane and the first guy on the air, Geoff Fox. If you listen to the Bill Davis interview, you'll hear how someone I know closely played Whole Lotta Love way before WMUM was born. (Smile) Hope you enjoy all of them here. You can reach out to me at TalesVinylTells@gmail.com. The month of March I celebrate another year at RadioFreeNashville. 2023 is one year.
Y en El Guateque de Onda Regional de Murcia (domingos, 22,05h) combatimos el frio con Nada Malamina, Herman Hermits, Johnny & The Hurricanes, Los Bravos, The Mama's & The Papa's, Thunderclap Newman, Nicola Di Bari, Emilio El Moro, Marisol y Palomo Linares, Mochi, Enrique Guzmán y Los Teen Tops, The Hollies.
Adrian Belew - Young Lions In this episode, we review a solo album by a guy whose solo work should be more well-known. He's worked with an assortment of major artists but he's become a major artist in his own right. Our tracks of the way are The Church's "Under The Milky Way", Thunderclap Newman's "Look Around" and Lee's song "Spicy Tamarind." Cheers, everybody!
Do you know, off the top of your head now, who played the part of Buddy Holly in La Bamba, the movie from 1987? We've got a great cut from him this time. There's a story about Thunderclap Newman and we've got their cool tune too. The #5 artist on the short list of those who have sold more than 15 million units of an LP is played. Their debut vinyl disc sold 17 million times. A hint: they're named after a great city. And there's much more. Tales Vinyl Tells will be three years old on December 19th, 2022 and the project that started as a homegrown podcast became an hour a week live show on RadioFreeNashville, WRFN-LP this past March. Listen live Wednesdays at 5 central time at 103.7 & 107.1 FM around Nashville, RadioFreeNashville or here. My aim is to share my albums and other sources, our music from the 60s and 70s, and it can/does take us into other eras of the rock years. So, as I like to warn you, the listener, don't be surprised what you hear here. Please support your independent and listener-supported RadioFreeNashville. You can do that in so many ways: Smile.Amazon.com, give us your old car or truck, or set up a monthly $ gift to support the diverse programming on WRFN-LP at RadioFreeNashville. You can listen live there; you can hear replays and download all of my live radio shows at Studio Mills Wellness.com , Apple Podcasts, and at Podbean.com, where the show is hosted.

Another new era began in the wake of the first wave of the British Invasion and this time the World went from a black and white bleak scene to a world that was glowing in glorious colours. The psychedelic era in London encapsulated multi media events, poetry readings, free schools, the first underground press with the publication of The International Times, the 14-Hour Technicolour Dream at the Alexandra Palace and the release of The Beatles 'Sgt. This week I continue our exploration of the movement for social justice as expressed in song. This constitutes not just the fight in the United States for racial and class equity but also the worldwide struggle against imperialism, focusing in particular on African and South American singing freedom fighters, including Miriam Makeba, Salif Keita, Youssou N’Dour, Letta Mbulu, Mercedes Sosa, Milton Nascimento, and Víctor Jara. Other artists heard include Marvin Gaye, Leontyne Price, Nanci Griffith, Frederica von Stade, Nina Simone, David Crosby, Pete Seeger, Marin Mazzie, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Jefferson Airplane, Sam Cooke, Joséphine Baker, Joan Baez, Tracy Chapman, Thunderclap Newman (whose song lends the episode its title), Harry Belafonte, Dawn Upshaw, Phil Ochs, Rosemary Clooney, Curtis Mayfield, and Mahalia Jackson, as well as number of present-day troubadors. Composers represented include Kurt Weill, Duke Ellington, John Adams, Silvio Rodríguez, Leonard Bernstein, Marc Blitzstein, Stephen Foster, Violeta Parra, Flaherty and Ahrens, Ary Barroso, and Caiphus Semenya. I address the spectrum of emotions that persons of conscience are experiencing right now, including despair, rage, anger, struggle, ending with faith, hope, and resolve. Don’t miss this episode! CHERIE CURRIE & BRIE DARLING Release The Kinks Classic “Do It Again” as Their New Single Grammy Museum Performance August 1 New Album “The Motivator” - Out August 2 Stream "Do It Again" Album Pre-Order (Los Angeles, CA) – July 19, 2019 – Los Angeles-based, female rock icons, Cherie Currie and Brie Darling have released their new single, The Kinks classic “Do It Again” today. You can stream “Do It Again” HERE “Do It Again” along with their covers of The Youngbloods’ "Get Together" and T. Rex’s "The Motivator" will appear on their debut album, The Motivator which is set for release August 2, 2019 on Blue Élan Records and is available for pre-order. Learn more about the new release HERE Cherie & Brie are also set to perform songs for the very first time from the new album at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles on Thursday, August 1. Tickets Available Now. The Motivator was produced by the six-time Grammy nominated Dave Darling (Brian Setzer, Stray Cats, Janiva Magness, Tom Waits) and features nine classic covers by bands including The Rolling Stones, Stevie Wonder, and John Lennon, plus three powerful new originals, “Too Bruised,” “I’m Too Good, That’s Just Too Bad” and the topical “This Is Our Time.” Guests on the album include a host of family and friends who came in to do backups, including Currie’s sister, actress Sondra Currie, her ex-husband, actor Robert Hays; friends, Susan Olsen of Brady Bunch fame, Leslie Koch Foumberg, and actress/director, Allison Scagliotti. Darling’s brother, Henry Berry is on “He Ain’t Heavy”; and brother Phil Berry does a guitar solo on the Kinks tune “Do it Again” while her sister, Rory Berry Bishop plays drums on Thunderclap Newman’s “Something in the Air.” Patti Quatro—Suzi’s sister and a member of Fanny—plays guitar and sings on “For What It’s Worth.” The Runaways front-woman and solo artist, Currie, met the Fanny drummer and singer, Darling, in 2017 and immediately connected. Currie had come in to contribute vocals to Fanny Walked the Earth, a reunion album from the trailblazing Fanny, the first all-female band signed to a major label (Reprise) in 1969. Though the two musicians were certainly admirers of each other, they had not yet met until that session. Once connected, the idea to continue collaborating was hatched and soon the idea to record an album was solidified.
