There's a reason Danny Gatton's nickname was "The Humbler." He earned it through sheer Tele mastery. From his limitless technique and musical vocabulary to his command over his sound, Gatton was one of the greatest 6-stringers around. Guitarist Scott Metzger (LaMP, Joe Russo's Almost Dead) is a modern master of the Telecaster vernacular, and he slings lyrical licks that offer nods to the masters of the form, all the way back to the first Tele virtuoso, Jimmy Bryant through aces Roy Buchanan, Jim Campilongo, and Gatton. He's joins us on this episode to help breakdown Gatton's playing and gives us some listening tips.Read about Scott: https://www.premierguitar.com/features/artist-features/scott-metzger-leaves-it-all-onstageilikelamp.comEpisode sponsored by Keeley: https://robertkeeley.com/Follow Nick: https://www.instagram.com/nickmillevoiFollow Jason: https://www.instagram.com/jasonshadrickGet at us: 100guitarists@premierguitar.comCall/Text: 319-423-9734Podcast powered by Sweetwater. In a recent episode of Valley Today, host Janet Michael transported her listeners to the cultural heart of Berryville, Clark County, through an engaging conversation with Martha Reynolds, the Executive Director of the Barns of Rose Hill. Bridging past and present, Reynolds painted a vivid picture of the barn's dynamic offerings, from art exhibitions and concert series to educational programs. The Barns' rich calendar is brimming with events that cater to a variety of interests. Reynolds highlighted some standout exhibitions, such as the 'World of Wood' show and the collective exhibit from the Potomac River Artist Guild, showcasing beautiful still lifes and nature scenes. Additionally, the Barns will feature an exhibit by Rosa and Winton Eugene from South Carolina, renowned for their compelling pottery and masks. A Charles M. Schultz traveling exhibition is also on the horizon, celebrating Peanuts' first Black character, Franklin. This event promises to be an artistic exploration of social themes with supplementary programs like comic-making classes. The conversation shifted to the Barns' enduring legacy as a premier music venue. With its remarkable acoustics, the Barns attract diverse musical acts, including bluegrass, Celtic, jazz, and classical guitar. Reynolds beamed with pride as she recounted how performers have likened playing at the Barns to “playing inside a guitar.” Upcoming shows include a documentary screening about esteemed guitarist Danny Gatton and an authentic Argentinian tango performance. Reynolds emphasized the Barns' thoughtful approach to accessibility—offering free admission to galleries and affordable concert tickets, all while ensuring fair compensation for artists. The forthcoming membership drive and annual benefit gala, Belmont at the Barns, will help sustain its wide array of free programs. In closing, Reynolds invited everyone to explore the Barns of Rose Hill. Whether planning a visit to browse exhibitions, attend a concert, or join a workshop, the Barns promise a little something for everyone: a true testament to the vibrant cultural fabric of Berryville and the Shenandoah Valley.
Soundgarden emerged as a pioneering force in the Seattle grunge scene, bringing elements of heavy metal and alternative rock into what would come to be known as the Seattle sound. The group originally found lead singer and primary songwriter Chris Cornell singing from behind a drum set where he was the group's percussionist, but it became clear that this would not work well in live concerts, so Cornell switched to vocals and rhythm guitar while turning over percussion work to Matt Cameron. Badmotorfinger, the third studio album, finds the group just before it's breakout into grunge superstardom, an event that would occur with the release of their next album. Taking its name from a spoof on a popular Montrose song, Badmotorfinger sports a strong heavy metal sound, but with tighter songwriting, and a bit of complexity in time signatures and tunings. It would become the band's highest charting album to date, peaking at number 39 on the Billboard 200 chart, and going double platinum by 1996. It was also considered a success by critics, and was nominated in 1992 for a Grammy award for Best Metal Performance. While the album definitely has grunge elements in it, as a whole it may be considered more alternative, heavy metal, or hard rock. The band's development makes this album more difficult to pin down into a single genre, and perhaps this makes for a more interesting listening experience. We hope you enjoy this foray into the roots of the grunge movement as Lynch brings us the album for today's podcast. Rusty CageThe opening track to the album was the third single released, and reflects a longing for freedom and a breaking out of the “rusty cage” that life can be. The guitars are tuned down significantly, giving the riffs a jangling sound. Johnny Cash would cover it a few years later, turning the song into a country anthem. OutshinedThis track combines themes of self-doubt and internal struggle with appearances of external success and confidence, creating a clash within the singer. Cornell creates depth and passion through his vocals. “Show me the power, child. I'd like to say that I'm down on my knees today.”Jesus Christ PoseUnlike many tracks, this first single released from the album is credited to all four band members. The lyrics are a rant against the hypocrisy of religious leaders who turn belief into a means of acquiring power. This track is an example of a Soundgarden song that is more metal than grunge at this point.Slaves & BulldozersThis song is often described as “doom metal,” and utilizes drop-tuned guitars to create a slow burn, darker sound. The lyrics encourage the listener to consider how their situation may be turning them into either an obedient slave or a nihilistic bulldozer. It was the last song Soundgarden played live before Chris Cornell's death in 2017. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Theme from the television series “The Cosby Show”This staple of 80's sitcom had their final episode and went off the air in April 1992. STAFF PICKS:I Want to Touch You by Catherine WheelWayne kicks off the staff picks with the Manchester sound. This post-psychedelic song deals with the raw emotions of a shy guy who is infatuated with a particular woman. “It would really make my day if you'd only move away, 'cause I'm scared that if you stay, I'll want to touch you.” Just Take My Heart by Mr. BigRob brings us a power ballad that peaked at number 16. It was the fourth single from the second album by Mr. Big entitled “Lean Into It.” The song features some excellent finger picking on an electric guitar toned down to an almost acoustic consistency. Eric Martin is the lead singer and co-writer of the song.Cold Day in Hell by Gary MooreBruce features a guitar virtuoso from Northern Ireland. Gary Moore got his start in an Irish band called Skid Row in the late 1960's but is better known as a member of Thin Lizzy. This lead-off track to his ninth solo studio album called “After Hours” is a straightforward announcement that the man and his lover would never be getting back together. Silent Lucidity by QueensrycheLynch closes out the staff picks with beautiful and epic piece off the Empire album. Chris DeGarmo, guitarist and primary songwriter for the group, was inspired to write this song after reading a book about lucid dreams. The first iteration of the song was acoustic guitar and vocals only, and instrumentation was added later. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:The Simpsons by Danny GattonA rock/blues guitar cover of the main theme of “The Simpsons” takes us out for today's session. Steve and Cat talk about the place in society for the Do Gooder. Artist Thomas Eakins is the SOB of the week. Netflix's "Nobody Wants This" romantic comedy is our What Ca Watchin. Shot of the Week is the Peanut Butter Cookie shot. Band of the week is guitarist Danny Gatton.
It turns out it's not all about the bass when talking with my hero, iconic legend, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Inductee, Jack Casady, of Jefferson Airplane and Hot Tuna. We did a deep dive into Jack's family history, which is documented back to 1600s America on one side. There's Irish, there's Jewish, smoked whitefish on Sunday mornings whilst being raised Protestant. There are stories aplenty of Jack's father with whom he shared a passion for music and a complicated relationship. Jack found a banjo and a guitar in their attic, where his musical journey began. Jack shares the details, suffice it to say, his solid work ethic, intelligence, talent, and perhaps his penchant for alcohol took root here. Unlike his father, Jack got to live his passion, and got sober 34 years ago. Bravo, sir! He tells a most poignant tale with a prop of losing his father thisclose to a lovely milestone. One of many very moving moments shared today. Jack took us through his early musical influences and experiences, and a couple of non-musical ones like his paper route… he spoke of Danny Gatton, meeting Jorma, how he went from guitar to bass, the invitation to join Jefferson Airplane, in my top 5 bands of all time, what that was for him creatively - those days, San Francisco, those people, Signe, Marty, Paul, then Grace, Skip, Spencer… and the lifestyle, going club to club, playing and supporting each other, The Dead, Big Brother, Jimi, and recording Voodoo Chile, and the impact Mitch Mitchell had on the music, Jimi, and on Jack. We talked The Filmore, West, and East, the special pull of New York, Woodstock, how that went down for Jack & Jorma, and the aftermath… Hot Tuna, how and why… he and Jorma and why it still works almost 60 years later… SVT, The Starship, KBC… teaching at Fur Peace Ranch, and now virtually - you too can study with Jack! He played Somebody to Love on his signature Diana and almost made me cry, and, at my request, his iconic White Rabbit riff, in my top 5 songs of all time and the reason I picked up a bass 40 years ago. Speaking of Diana, Jack spoke of their life together and their fight to keep his wife alive after her cancer diagnosis. He was visibly overcome and still for a few moments when speaking of her passing over a decade ago. The bright side, he announced he's betrothed to Debra Evans, who was part of Diana's care team. Lots of full-circle moments, Jack shares a birthday with my son, Harry. We're all connected, aren't we? This was a dream come true for this Airplane, Hot Tuna, loving, bass-playing wanna-be. One for the books. If someone had told me when I was a girl in Queens playing the grooves off Surrealistic Pillow that I would one day sit down with Jack (and Jorma), I would've wanted what they were having. I was probably already having it. And look at us now, all three, clean and sober. This old girl is grateful beyond words for this wondrous day with Jack. Interview with Arlen Roth 2024 Arlen Roth is a true guitar legend; part of the list of who he's recorded and toured with contains folks like Simon & Garfunkel (together and individually), John Prine, Phoebe Snow, Bob Dylan, Bee Gees, Don McLean, Levon Helm, Ry Cooder, Duane Eddy, Danny Gatton, Janis Ian, Dusty Springfield, John Sebastian, Johnny Winter and countless more. He also appeared with Ramblin' Jack Elliot and Patti Smith in the Martin Scorcese Rolling Thunder film, created the guitar parts and was consultant and teacher to Ralph Macchio for the legendary blues film, Crossroads. In 2016, he wrote and performed an acoustic guitar piece with Daveed Diggs and Leslie Odom, Jr. of Hamilton for ESPN. Arlen was voted in the Top 100 most Influential guitarists of all time by Vintage Guitar Magazine and top 50 all-time acoustic guitarists by Gibson.com. Now, on Arlen Roth's 20th solo album and his fifth all-acoustic offering, he's bringing rootsy acoustic music to new heights on Playing Out the String, set for release September 27 and distributed by MVD. The new album was recorded, mixed and mastered by Alex Salzman, who also contributes keyboards to the mix. Arlen's previous album, Super Soul Session, with bass legend Jerry Jemmott, sat atop the Blues and Soul charts for 22 straight weeks, and was in the Top 5 for 55 straight weeks this past year. Arlen has also been at the forefront of guitar and music education, with 10 best-selling books, and he was the first-ever to offer video instruction with the giants of the music industry through his “Hot Licks” company, which he started in 1979, and has had millions of students worldwide. His column for Guitar Player magazine was voted #1 by the largest margin of readers from 1982 to 1992, and was also turned into a best-selling book, Hot Guitar. On Playing Out the String, this all-acoustic, mostly solo album is very personal to Arlen and is really like getting an up-close "at home" concert in your living room. On it, he paints with broad strokes across several genres of music he loves. From "Old Timey" Norman Blake material to country blues from Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee and Tampa Red; he even makes you feel at home with Nilsson's "Everybody's Talkin'" and gives his 12-string guitar a workout on the archetypical, "Walk Right In." https://www.arlenroth.com

We've covered a lot of great bands and artists in our podcasts, but it is a rare occasion when we get to explore a group that has defined an entire rock genre. The Cure are considered to be the defining band within the goth rock movement. Formed in 1978 out of the post-punk era, this West Sussex band would grow into an international cult favorite, complete with black wardrobe, smeared lipstick, and wild hair. The Cure is considered to have hit the height of their commercial appeal with Wish, their ninth stuio album. Personnel for this album were Boris Williams on percussion (his last album appearance with the group), Perry Bamonte on guitars and keyboards (his first appearance as a member of the group), Pori Thompson on guitar (his last appearance with the group for 16 years), Simon Gallop on bass, and Robert Smith on vocals, keyboards, guitar, and bass. The Cure would see a lot of personnel changes through the years, with Robert Smith being the only consistent member throughout, and the driving force behind the band.Wish was written with a lighter alternative rock sound than their previous albums, making many songs more accessible both to the less devoted fan and to commercial radio. It went to number 2 on the Billboard 200 albums chart in the US, and number 1 on the UK albums chart.Bruce presents this monster of goth rock in today's podcast. A Letter to EliseThe third single from the album had its first release prior to the album on a 1991 episode of MTV Unplugged. It is a song about resignation, of realizing that things are just not going to work out. It went to number 2 on the US Alternate Airplay charts.HighOne of the more upbeat songs, this is the lead single from the album. It went to number 1 on the US Modern Tracks, and 42 on the Billboard Hot 100. It chronicles the feelings of love and infatuation. Despite their reputation, many Cure songs are not dark and melancholy. To Wish Impossible ThingsThis is a deeper track, and a darker one. It is about relationships generally, and more specifically looking back on a relationship that is no more. The title comes from the idea that selfish wishes do not turn out well when they are granted.Friday I'm In LoveThis was the band's second single and the big hit from the album. It peaked at number 18 on the Billboard Hot 100 (the last top 40 hit for the Cure to date), and at number 1 on the Billboard Modern Tracks chart. This surprisingly happy song about looking foward to Friday has become one of the signature songs from the group. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Yo Cousin Vinny by Joe PesciThe starring actor from "My Cousin Vinny" takes a comedic turn with this song inspired by the movie "My Cousin Vinny." STAFF PICKS:To Be With You by Mr. BigLynch starts off the staff picks with an acoustic rock ballad. Front man and co-writer Eric Martin provides lead vocals to this song which topped the Billboard Hot 100. It was a single off the album "Lean Into It," and is considerdd the groups most successful song to date. Black Flag by Kings XRob's staff pick is the lead single off Kings X's self-titled album, their fourth studio album, and the first on Atlantic Records. Kings X has often been labeled as a Contemporary Christian album, but they have inspired a number of prog rock groups through the years. Unlike many bands, the core lineup of the band has remained the same for over forty years. The End of Everything by The Charlatans UKWayne brings us a deeper cut from a group from the midlands in England. This song's lyrics are inspired by a friend feigning an illness so he could leave the army. The band appended the "UK" at the end of their name to avoid confusion with a 60's American band also called "the Charlatans."Until Your Love Comes Back Around by RTZBruce wraps up the staff picks with a ballad from a short-lived band out of Boston. Former members of the band Boston, including guitarist Barry Goudreau and vocalist Brad Delp formed RTZ with keyboardist Mrian Maes, percussionist Dave Stefanelli, and bassist Tim Archibald. This song went to number 26 on the US charts. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Elmira St. Boogie by Danny GattonThis instrumental gets us moving as we close out this week's podcast. If you can't figure out how to play Joe Bonamassa's solo from “Blues Deluxe,” don't worry. It all changes when Shifty sits down with Bonamassa for this special episode of Shred With Shifty. No surprise that both of them reach for their Les Pauls, and Bonamassa even reveals why he switched from Strats to Gibsons in the early 2000s. Bonamassa is known for his dazzling collection of vintage guitars—which he says has become a target for haters—but he explains that you don't need a '58 Les Paul to get the goods. “It's also the mystique,” he says. “If Jimmy Page played a Tokai, everyone would want a Tokai.” A guitar made two weeks ago, he says, is just as good as a classic. Bonamassa's lightning-quick soloing style, which conjures a hurricane of major and minor pentatonic notes with some phrygian flair, is the stuff of legend, and his tricks on “Blues Deluxe” are plenty. Even though he tries to adhere to a “divide by two” rule to simplify his phrasings, he still stumps Shiflett with a volume swell trick he learned from Roy Buchanan and Danny Gatton. This solo is no walk in the park. Any brave takers up for giving it a shot? Share it and tag us so Shifty can have a look! Most importantly, remember to have fun. “Do whatever you want with the damn thing,” says Bonamassa. “It's just a guitar.” Click below to subscribe to the podcast! The mighty Johnny Hiland astounds with his telecaster manipulations and chicken-pickin'-fricassee par excellence. Known far and wide for his blazingly fast and tasty playing, Johnny is a guitar veteran of the Don Kelley Band (a Nashville institution where other veterans such as Guthrie Trapp, Brent Mason, JD Simo, and more got their start), and he's also played on records for artists such as Ricky Skaggs, Toby Keith, Hank Williams III, and Randy Travis, just to name a few. He was signed to Steve Vai's Favored Nations label in 2004, and he's been ripping it up ever since. 178. Join us this episode as we pay tribute to the late Robert Gordon, sadly passing today at the age of 75. He was a phenomenally talented vocalist who made his distinct debut during the heady punk & disco days of the late 1970's, recreating and rediscovering authentic roots rock n' roll and then reinterpreting them with his strong baritone voice for a rockabilly-deprived music fans the world over. He helped to spotlight some incredible guitarists such as Chris Spedding, Danny Gatton and even widening his spotlight to include seminal guitar god Link Wray. Thankfully, I had many chances to experience his talents, even interviewing him for a recent episode of "Go Kat, GO!" when he was promoting his latest LP "Rockabilly For Life." Enjoy hand-selected favorites from the far-ranging repertoire of Mr. Gordon as well as many choice requests from his fans in tonight's show. This loss hurts, especially at a time when we're losing so many of the last surviving original rockers. His music was and will always be integral to the roots rock 'n' roll landscape and we'll continue to happily honor Robert Gordon musical legacy tonight and always on "Go Kat, GO The Rock-A-Billy Show!"
"THE GREATEST UNKNOWN GUITARIST"IN THE BEGINNING by Roy Buchanan (Polydor, 1974)This is one of my all-time favorite 8 track scores. I bought it for .29 cents at Rockaway Records in Silverlake, CA., and the amount of sublime bliss that it has given me for that paltry sum doesn't equate. This proves the egalitarian potential of the 8 track: for the price of some spare change, one of life's most profound visions may be glimpsed. It is a collector's Eldorado to not only find a hidden treasure in perfect condition, but to get it for a steal. I had never heard of Roy Buchanan when I decided: “what the hell”, and grabbed this immaculate cart,- but Robbie Robertson, Danny Gatton, Arlen Roth, Jeff Beck, David Gilmour, Jerry Garcia, and many others sure did, and they were influenced by his signature tone - (cited by Guitar Magazine as one of the 50 greatest of all time). And when I popped this cart into the player and heard his plaintive, wailing strings for the first time, I spontaneously burst into tears of delight. This was a decade after his early demise, at age 48, when Roy was found suspiciously hanging by his shirt in a jail cell, after being arrested for “public intoxication”. Just imagine: if he had succeeded in his plan to quit the music business in the mid-60s, and become a hairdresser, the world would never have had these great recordings featuring his signature “pinch” harmonics, volume controlled “wah-wah”, and chicken picking. It's a loss I don't want to contemplate.Legend has it that after Jimi Hendrix stole Roy's wah-wah sound (by cheating with a pedal instead of using the volume control) - Roy decided to refocus his playing towards roots music, and in 1971 when the documentary “Introducing Roy Buchanan” was followed by an offer to this sharecropper's son to join the Rolling Stones (which he declined), the world started taking notice. On this, his fifth and last studio album, Roy delivers all the R&B telecaster goodness one could wish for (abetted by the punchy Tower of Power horns, and funky vocals by Billy Sheffield on Rescue Me and I'm a Ram). In the Beginning made it to #160 on the charts - and onto my eternal playlist.

"There are many legendary guitarists who have become known of playing just one guitar - Brian May, Danny Gatton, John Schofield, Mike Stern and Larry Carlton, to name of few. It is an intriguing thought, isn't it? Just one guitar! But... is it possible? Can one guitar be the answer to all my needs as a player..!?"Let's talk about the "Ultimate One Guitar Collection" - on my Weekly Wednesday Live episode #44. Looking forward! Thank you Manuel V. for the inspiration to make this video. This broadcast is targeted to all of you who enjoy guitars and basses, be it players, enthusiasts or collectors alike! The program is not about the guitars we make in my company Ruokangas Guitars. I'm doing this for you, who are interested in learning more about your instrument. The brand or monetary value of your guitar makes no difference whatsoever. This podcast was originally published as a live stream on YouTube, and the imagery of the original video is obviously missing from this audio-only version. Tune in on YouTube and search Weekly Wednesday Live Q&A with Juha, and you'll find the originals!Talk to you soon,Juha

Mike T. Kerr is a wild guitar player and ambitious songwriter of Canadian heritage and American citizenship. During his time at Berklee College of Music in Boston and in over 10 years of performing, he's lived his life through many historical and contemporary musical styles. Always curious to dig up not only a song's history, but the shape of the world at the time, Mike plays passionately and openly while interpreting the great guitar players of the past. A Danny Gatton lick or Django Reinhardt tune is never far from his fingertips. Mike had a brief but boisterous stint based out of Halifax, Nova Scotia where in 2018 he was nominated by Music Nova Scotia as Musician of the Year. Currently residing in Toronto, pre-pandemic Mike was found gigging regularly at hot-spots like The Cameron House, The Dakota Tavern, and The Local Pub playing original country music almost any night of the week, or lending his guitar skills to Canadian folk singers such as Corin Raymond, Campbell Woods, and others. Guitar Rags & Country Ballads is Mike's first album, it was recorded and released in 2018. It features 7 original Country songs and 3 instrumentals. Mike has kept very busy since that debut release and has endeavoured to release an album a month in 2021 at: miketkerr.bandcamp.com For more on Mike visit: www.miketkerr.com

This special Friday release episode features Ryan and Tom of the band Over Under. They are a cover band from Annapolis. I first met Ryan while he was bartending at a favorite haunt of mine and we became friends. For this episode the band was able to record an awesome cover of one of my favorites Tyler Childer's song “Whitehouse Road.” Which is linked below. Ryan has a great voice and Tom is a talented guitar player (who likes Danny Gatton). I will also add the link on insta and facebook. If you frequent any Annapolis area establishments be sure to follow them on insta and facebook as well. https://soundcloud.com/breitenbach-1/whitehouse-road-tyler-childers
Moonshine Society gives a big nod to Aesop’s theory that we’re known by the company we keep. So, while staking claim to lofty Music Land real estate of their own with a searing, cutting-edge blend of blues, soul, rock and R&B, they continue to rack up powerhouse stripes rubbing elbows with the best. Johnny Winter, Gov’t Mule, Derek Trucks, Susan Tedeschi, Tower of Power, John Mayall, Roomful of Blues, John Mayer and Ron Holloway count among the legends the band and its members have accompanied and opened for, not to mention other greats as Tab Benoit, George Clinton and the Funkadelic, Danny Gatton and Samantha Fish.
As the lead guitarist of Carbon Leaf, Carter Gravatt has successfully toured and recorded since 1992, crossing paths with huge names in the music business (Dave Matthews, Blues Traveler, the Avett Brothers, and many more). What's especially fascinating about Carter is that he performs not only on electric and acoustic guitars, but also on an incredible number of other instruments including mandolin, banjo, violin, cello, lap steel, pedal steel, bouzouki, hurdy gurdy, dobro, and probably more! In part 2 of 2 of this interview, Joe McMurray and Aaron Sefchick enjoy talking with Carter about songwriting, and approaches to improvisation. The guys discuss songwriting and look inside Carbon Leaf's system of collaboration. They get Carter's take on improvising as well as his musical influences which include Eric Johnson, Mike Stern, Danny Gatton, Bela Fleck, Earl Scruggs, Mike Marshall, Sam Bush, John Paul Jones, Peter Buck, and old time Appalachian music. Fun facts: In 2002 Carbon Leaf won an American Music Award for their song "The Boxer." They featured Katy Perry in their 2006 music video, "Learn to Fly." They recorded music for the 2009 film Curious George 2. In 2002 their music was featured on national commercials for the Pontiac Vibe. They have played with/crossed paths with other major acts including Dave Matthews, O.A.R., The Avett Brothers, Sister Hazel, Big Head Todd, Blues Traveler, Jason Mraz, and many others. New Podcast New Year S2E1 2-5-19 Tracy Morgan- (born November 10, 1968)[1] is an American actor and comedian best known for his seven seasons as a cast member on Saturday Night Live (1996–2003) and 30 Rock (2006–2013). He was nominated for an Emmy Award in 2009 for his work on 30 Rock. He has appeared in numerous films as an actor and voice actor. 30 Rock-”Liz Lemon, head writer of the sketch comedy show "TGS with Tracy Jordan", must deal with an arrogant new boss and a crazy new star, all while trying to run a successful television show without losing her mind.” Judah Friedlander-American actor and comedian, known for playing the role of writer Frank Rossitano on the NBC sitcom 30 Rock. The Truth About Santa Claus: Movie The Last O.G.-How Tracy Morgan’s Near-Death Experience Inspired His New Comedy, The Last O.G. Spine Health for Musicians-Could the Alexander Technique Relieve Your Chronic Back and Neck Pain? Concussion-2015 American biographical sports drama film directed and written by Peter Landesman, based on the exposé "Game Brain" by Jeanne Marie Laskas, published in 2009 by GQ magazine. The Matrix-A computer hacker learns from mysterious rebels about the true nature of his reality and his role in the war against its controllers. Malcolm Gladwell: Outliers-In this stunning new book, Malcolm Gladwell takes us on an intellectual journey through the world of "outliers"--the best and the brightest, the most famous and the most successful. He asks the question: What makes high-achievers different? Supple-compliant often to the point of obsequiousness Oberlin-Oberlin College is a private liberal arts college in Oberlin, Ohio. Founded as the Oberlin Collegiate Institute in 1833 by John Jay Shipherd and Philo Stewart, it is the oldest coeducational liberal arts college in the United States and the second oldest continuously operating co-educational institute of higher learning in the world. J.J. Johnson-James Louis Johnson (January 22, 1924 – February 4, 2001) was an American jazz trombonist, composer and arranger. Johnson was one of the earliest trombonists to embrace bebop. Jack Teagarden-Weldon Leo "Jack" Teagarden (August 20, 1905 – January 15, 1964) was a jazz trombonist and singer. According to critic Scott Yannow of Allmusic, Teagarden was the preeminent American jazz trombone player before the bebop era of the 1940s and "one of the best jazz singers too". Teagarden's early career was as a sideman with the likes of Tommy Dorsey, Paul Whiteman and lifelong friend Louis Armstrong before branching out as a bandleader in 1939 and specializing in New Orleans Jazz-style jazz until his death. Slide Hampton-Locksley Wellington "Slide" Hampton (born April 21, 1932) is an American jazz trombonist, composer and arranger. Described by critics as a master composer, arranger and uniquely gifted trombone player, Hampton's career is among the most distinguished in jazz. As his nickname implies, Hampton's main instrument is slide trombone, but he also occasionally plays tuba and flugelhorn. John Coltrane-John Coltrane departed this mortal plane more than fifty years ago; today he remains among us, more alive than ever. His sound continues to grab the ears of an ever-widening circle of fans. His legend is stone solid: planted firmly in our culture as that of any 20th century musical giant. His saxophone sound—brooding, searching, dark—is still one of the most recognizable in modern jazz. His influence stretches over styles and genres, and transcends cultural boundaries. The modern ideal of music serving a deeply spiritual, connective purpose? A defining facet of John Coltrane. Eddie Palmieri-Known as one of the finest pianists of the past 60 years, Eddie Palmieri is a bandleader, arranger and composer of salsa and Latin jazz. Conrad Herwig-New York-based jazz trombonist Conrad Herwig is considered one of the world’s complete jazz musicians, atop both the performing and jazz educational fields with an abundance of composer and arranger credits, as well. To date, he has released 20 recordings as a leader in addition to contributing to nearly 200 other recording sessions with some of the most notable artists in jazz. He has performed and recorded with Miles Davis, Joe Henderson, Eddie Palmieri, Tito Puente, Frank Sinatra, Joe Lovano and Tom Harrell, among many others. The Latin Side of John Coltrane-John Coltrane's music has been interpreted many ways since his death in 1967 but rarely in a Latin jazz setting. Trombonist Conrad Herwig, in putting together this project, wisely avoided using any other tenor or soprano saxophonists, instead gathering together several trumpeters, either Ronnie Cuber or Gary Smulyan on baritone, flutist Dave Valentin and a crack Latin rhythm section. By varying the instrumentation and personnel on each selection, Herwig has succeeded in continually casting Coltrane's music in a new light. The opening and closing versions of "Blessing" have Milton Cardona vocalizing a brief prayer. All of the other music (with the exception of Mongo Santamaria's "Afro Blue") are 'Trane compositions. Herwig is well showcased, as is trumpeter Brian Lynch and most of the sidemen. The results are quite fresh, often infectious and unpredictable. A fine tribute to the flexibility of John Coltrane's 1960-64 music. Iridium NY-The Iridium Jazz Club is a jazz club located on Broadway in New York City. The club hosts weekly performances by John Colianni, and also featured weekly performances by Les Paul for nearly fifteen years. FEZ UNDER TIME CAFE: 1992 - 2005-The Fez under Time Cafe, known as the Fez, was a nightclub and restaurant on Lafayette Street and Great Jones Street in New York City's NoHo District. The club closed in February 2005. It hosted numerous musicians and comedians, including Rufus Wainwright, Stella, Richard Barone, Carly Simon and Jeff Buckley. Mingus Big Band-The Mingus Big Band celebrates the music of composer/bassist Charles Mingus, who died in 1979. Under the artistic direction of Sue Mingus, this 14-piece band performed Thursday MBB nights from 1991 to 2004 at Fez under Time Cafe in New York City. It maintained weekly residencies in the city from May 2004 until October 2008, when it began “Mingus Mondays” at Jazz Standard where it alternates with the Mingus Orchestra and Mingus Dynasty. Bishop Nathaniel Townsley-Listen on Spotify Gospel Jubilee-Facebook page Nathaniel Townsley Jr.-Discogs Jimmy “Preacher” Robins- Jimmy Robins In terms of gruff intensity and roaring power few singers could match Jimmy Robbins. In my view he never made a bad record although his career was so fragmented - he recorded for several labels and under a couple of names - he's never really gotten either the visibility or success his wonderful voice deserved. Robins may just have been the best "underground" artist of them all and fully warranted his "Preacher" tag. In addition he wrote most of the songs he recorded and was a fine keyboard player, specialising in the Hammond B3 organ. Robins Nest Harlem-Photo Sugar Shack Harlem-”It is sadly the end of an era. After months of speculation The Sugar Shack has closed it’s doors for good. The site of impromptu gatherings, first dates, comedy shows, poetry readings and down and dirty dancing has gone from being The Sugar Shack to Striver’s Cafe and back to The Sugar Shack. In the late ’90s and early ’00 (when it was selected the Village Voice Best of 2000) you could drop into the Shack any night of the week and find something fun going on inside behind the velvet curtain. Whether it was fight night, a live band or a dj spinning the turntables, neighborhood patrons will certainly miss the good memories created at The Sugar Shack over the years. Londell’s Harlem-”Located on the threshold of Striver's Row, a historical section of Harlem, Londel's is rich in cuisine, entertainment, and social life. Known to original patrons as ''Striver's Row'', Londel's has expanded steadily and has maintained its traditional flavor in Southern, Creole, and American Comfort Cuisine.” Showman’s-”This soulful haunt of Harlem's old guard has been home to the greats (e.g. Sara Vaughan, Lionel Hampton, Duke Ellington, Pearl Bailey) since 1942, having moved to its current location in August,1998. A Hammond B-3 organ graces the stage, and is put to good use by Danny Mixon, Seleno Clarke, Nathan Lucas and Preacher Robins among others. Hammond Organ-”The Hammond organ is an electric organ, invented by Laurens Hammond and John M. Hanert and first manufactured in 1935. Various models have been produced, most of which use sliding drawbars to specify a variety of sounds. Until 1975, Hammond organs generated sound by creating an electric current from rotating a metal tonewheel near an electromagnetic pickup, and then strengthening the signal with an amplifier so it can drive a speaker cabinet. Around two million Hammond organs have been manufactured. The organ is commonly used with, and associated with, the Leslie speaker.” Jack McDuff- Eugene McDuff (September 17, 1926 – January 23, 2001), known professionally as "Brother" Jack McDuff or "Captain" Jack McDuff, was an American jazz organist and organ trio bandleader who was most prominent during the hard bop and soul jazz era of the 1960s, often performing with an organ trio. He is also credited with giving guitarist George Benson his first break. Stanley Turrentine- Stanley William Turrentine (April 5, 1934 – September 12, 2000) was an American jazz tenor saxophonist. He began his career playing R&B for Earl Bostic and later soul jazz recording for the Blue Note label from 1960, touched on jazz fusion during a stint on CTI in the 1970s. He was described by critic Steve Huey as "renowned for his distinctively thick, rippling tone [and] earthy grounding in the blues." Turrentine was married to organist Shirley Scott in the 1960s, with whom he frequently recorded, and was the younger brother of trumpeter Tommy Turrentine. Joey Defrancesco- Joey DeFrancesco (born April 10, 1971) is an American jazz organist, trumpeter, and vocalist. He has released more than 30 albums, including recordings with Miles Davis and Jimmy Smith. DeFrancesco signed his first record deal at the age of 16 and has played internationally with musicians that include David Sanborn, Arturo Sandoval, Larry Coryell, Frank Wess, John McLaughlin, Benny Golson, James Moody, Steve Gadd, Danny Gatton, Elvin Jones, Jimmy Cobb, George Benson, Pat Martino, John Scofield, Joe Lovano, and recorded with musicians that included Ray Charles, Bette Midler and Van Morrison. LinkedIn-LinkedIn is the top online site for professional, social and career networking. The site functions as an online directory of individual professionals and organizations, and facilitates the process of professional networking without having to leave your office. Should Musicians Use Linkedin? Surround yourself with the right people- Do the people around you drag you down? Do they make you doubt your abilities? Or do they always agree with your ideas... and never seem to have new ones? Then it's possible you're surrounded by people who will not help you become successful. Love Monkey-A music scout gets fired from his corporate job and gets a job at a smaller indie label. Sync Summit- Sync Summits are high-level, focused networking events held in New York, Hollywood and Paris where top music supervisors, heads of music in visual and interactive media (TV, Film, Video Games, Advertising, the Internet and Mobile), label executives, publishers, music libraries, composers, artists, technologists, legal, accounting, brand managers and service providers gather for two days of discussion, networking and dealmaking. Happy Humpday with Jon -Jon Arons dancing his heart out with a trombone. Delayed Gratification-Delayed gratification, or deferred gratification, describes the process that the subject undergoes when the subject resists the temptation of an immediate reward in preference for a later reward. Generally, delayed gratification is associated with resisting a smaller but more immediate reward in order to receive a larger or more enduring reward later.[1] A growing body of literature has linked the ability to delay gratification to a host of other positive outcomes, including academic success, physical health, psychological health, and social competence. Ralph Rolle-Drummer Gas, Ass or Grass-What some people consider the rules of hitchhiking, where the hitchhiker, upon pickup or throughout the trip, must either provide: 1)Gas for the car, 2)Some type of sexual satisfaction, or 3)Some type of drug, usually marijuana. Kinky Boots-Kinky Boots is a Broadway musical with music and lyrics by Cyndi Lauper and a book by Harvey Fierstein. Based on the 2005 British film Kinky Boots, written by Geoff Deane and Tim Firth and mostly inspired by true events, the musical tells the story of Charlie Price. Having inherited a shoe factory from his father, Charlie forms an unlikely partnership with cabaret performer and drag queen Lola to produce a line of high-heeled boots and save the business. In the process, Charlie and Lola discover that they are not so different after all. Gender norms-Our society has a set of ideas about how we expect men and women to dress, behave, and present themselves. LGBTQ-LGBTQ is the more commonly used term in the community; possibly because it is more user friendly! Limbic System-The limbic system is the part of the brain involved in our behavioural and emotional responses. Black holes and baby Universes-This book is a collection of essays and lectures written by Hawking, mainly about the makeup of black holes, and why they might be nodes from which other universes grow. Hawking discusses black hole thermodynamics, special relativity, general relativity, and quantum mechanics. Hawking also describes his life when he was young, and his later experience of motor neurone disease. The book also includes an interview with Professor Hawking. Naturalism Philosophy-In philosophy, naturalism is the "idea or belief that only natural (as opposed to supernatural or spiritual) laws and forces operate in the world."[1] Adherents of naturalism (i.e., naturalists) assert that natural laws are the rules that govern the structure and behavior of the natural universe, that the changing universe at every stage is a product of these laws. Adversity Is the Fuel of Greatness-Adversity is one of the most powerful forces in life. It can bring out your best or your worst. Ultimately, it is up to you. This week on Episode 43, Rob and Seth release their interview with Marcus King in advance of his band's first-ever "Family Reunion" festival, which will happen at the Pisgah Brewing Company on October 6 & 7.” Marcus covers a bevy of topics, including his early days guesting in his father's Christian blues band, growing up in South Carolina and how current stalwarts in the music scene (Jimmy Herring, Brendan Bayliss, Jake Cinninger and Snarky Puppy) inspired him to explore a variety of tones and to go home and practice his guitar more. The young phenom also speaks on creating new music and why he shares publishing with his band mates, some of his, perhaps surprising influences, his approach to performing as a guest musician and even demonstrates a knowledge of the long-lost legendary guitarist Danny Gatton. wTnS is Produced by Rob Turner and Engineered by Josh Thane of Wonder Dog Sounds Studio. www.joshthaneproductions.com www.wonderdogsounds.com Inside Out w/ Turner and Seth: insideoutwtns.com Twitter: @InsideoutWTNS Instagram: www.instagram.com/insideoutwtns Facebook: www.facebook.com/insideoutwTnS See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
If you haven’t plugged-in and tried a guitar amplifier from Louis Electric Amplifiers yet, I urge you to find the nearest one and do so right away. For the last 25 years, Louis Rosano has been hand-building his amplifiers in a small garage in Bergenfield, New Jersey, these amps have pleased the some of the industry’s heavyweights, from Keith Richards and Ron Wood, to Warren Haynes, Danny Gatton, Anna Popovic, Jackson Browne, Jorma Kaukonen, Hubert Sumlin, and Arlen Roth. I sat and talked with Louis in his shop, right next to the house his Grandparents bought in 1923. It was a beautiful day, the garage door was open, he treated me to a fantastic espresso, but most importantly, I fell deeply in love with his Deltone Reverb Amplifier.
