Moon Zappa grew up in what appeared, on the outside, to be an enviably free-wheeling and creative household in Laurel Canyon. On the inside, not so much. Her extremely funny, soul-baring and colourful account of dysfunctional family life in her memoir Earth To Moon is as gripping as it's unsettling. A typical day: “Your mother's on the rampage, I need you to hide the gun!” Only other children with famous parents can fully gauge the emotional turmoil. She talks here about her memoir Earth To Moon – just out in paperback – and the impact of Frank's work and tours on the frail domestic set-up and the years they all spent “stewarding his genius”. Along with … … “is genius worth the collateral damage?” … fond memories of rare moments with her workaholic father. … the Zappa family's perilous finances: “Could he write a pop song or did he just choose not to?” ... how she was shut out of the control of Frank's estate “plus a clause saying if I found religion I'd get no money at all”. … the nurses' reaction when they discovered her new-born brother was named ‘Dweezil'. ... recording Valley Girl, the song that made her a teenage star and changed the family fortunes but got no gratitude from her parents. … why Frank found Valley Girl's success “mortifying”. And how her one catastrophic live version put her off stage performance for life. … and that unique bond you have with other celebrity offspring: “Jakob Dylan and I just cackle with laughter. ‘That happened to you too?'” Order ‘Earth To Moon' in paperback here:https://www.amazon.co.uk/Earth-Moon-Unit-Zappa/dp/1474623859/ref=asc_df_1474623859?mcid=ae11e321cea83f4486c71a35dd95a9ea&th=1&psc=1&hvocijid=15982814295882496701-1474623859-&hvexpln=74&tag=googshopuk-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=696285193871&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=15982814295882496701&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9072502&hvtargid=pla-2281435176458&psc=1&gad_source=1Find out more about how to help us to keep the conversation going: https://www.patreon.com/wordinyourear Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. Shlomo Franklin is an American singer/songwriter born on a small cow farm in upstate New York. Raised off the cultural grid, without music, television, or radio, his songs are strongly influenced by his cult-like religious upbringing. Shlomo released his debut album in 2019 which was produced by Grammy Award winner C Lanzbom and was followed by a double album from his now Nashville, TN home. Franklin has opened up for Jakob Dylan and The Wallflowers and shared festivals with The Nude Party and The Bones of JR Jones. His songs seem just as comfortable in front of a crowd of two thousand as they are in a living room house concert. Shlomo sees himself as a bare bones troubadour and is stubbornly trendless.

This week, as the world is going to hell, Amy and Maya decide to practice denial and just talk about nonsense. The ladies lament the death of sweet, lovable Richard Simmons. Sweating to the Oldies! He really cared! Next up in this in memoriam episode, we remember the amazing, sex-positive Dr. Ruth. Also this week, we lost the one, the only Brenda Walsh aka Shannen Doherty. Concert Report: Maya goes to an epic record shop opening featuring a Tommy Stinson in-store concert with special guests Jakob Dylan and the Wallflowers. Squeeeeee! Animal Report: The pandas are back! Next up, wild teenage parties at suburban parks. Amy is waiting for her invite. The ladies relive their teenage night swimming adventures at Medicine Lake. Maya has the perfect nominee for president, and of course, we need a friendly hunk for vice president.

Singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and music producer Buck Johnson is the keyboardist and backing vocalist for the legendary rock band Aerosmith, the Hollywood Vampires (Johnny Depp, Alice Cooper, and Joe Perry), and The Joe Perry Project. Buck hails from the backroads of Shady Grove, Alabama, just outside Birmingham, where he grew up singing gospel throughout the South with his musical family. Since beginning his career, the soulful rock artist has amplified his musical talent by performing in churches, bars, festivals, and concert halls globally alongside icons like Aerosmith, Johnny Depp and Alice Cooper. As a songwriter, Buck co-wrote the international hit single for Carlos Santana, "Just Feel Better," for his 2005 album All That I Am, featuring Steven Tyler. After moving to Nashville in 2006, Buck joined the country rock band Whiskey Falls, releasing their self-titled album in 2007 and earning two Country Top 40 hit singles, "Last Train Running" and "Falling Into You." Buck credits his Alabama roots and his many years of living in California for his soulful rock Cala-Bama sound. Buck has also had numerous songs featured on television and in films as a songwriter, composer, producer, and performer, including the song "You Came Along" featuring Billy Ray Cyrus on vocals for the Lifetime movie Flying By, “Working Man” by Whiskey Falls for the ABC TV show Extreme Makeover-Home Edition, and "Fast Talking Lover" by Whiskey Falls for the ABC TV show Nashville. Continuing to expand his songwriting and musicianship, Buck produced and co-wrote Kaitlyn Kohler's single "I'm Not Crying," which recently went No. 1 at Texas Country radio. Buck has also recorded and/or toured with such notable acts as The Doobie Brothers (“Rockin' Down The Highway” live album), Tal Bachman (hit single “She's So High”), Jon McLaughlan (hit single “Beautiful Disaster”), John Waite, Chris Stills, Timothy B. Schmit (The Eagles), and more. He has also worked as a songwriting collaborator, session vocalist, and musician with songwriters and producers Jamie Houston (High School Musical, Carlos Santana), Charlie Midnight (The Doobie Brothers), and Bob Rock (Tal Bachman). Buck's latest works feature various iconic artists, including his self-produced rock ‘n' roll album, mixed by Chad Carlson (Taylor Swift, Blues Traveler, Chris Isaak, Trisha Yearwood); engineered by Tim Brennan (Steven Tyler, Chris Daughtry, Jason Mraz); Nick Buda on drums (Taylor Swift, Dolly Parton, Kenny Chesney); on guitar, Rob McNelley (Jelly Roll, Keith Urban, Carrie Underwood); Luis Maldonado (Train, Foreigner); and Geoff Pearlman (Linda Perry, Rikki Lee Jones, Jakob Dylan); and Ted Pecchio on bass (Doyle Bramhall II, Derek Trucks Band). The album features notable lead guitarists Damon Johnson (Lynyrd Skynyrd), Peter Stroud (Sheryl Crow), and the songwriting team of Buck and Charlie Midnight (James Brown, Joe Cocker, and Joni Mitchell). As a versatile entertainer, Buck's artistry encompasses American rock ‘n' roll with a unique soulful flare that comes from his gospel roots, creating a sound and style of his own. #aerosmith #hollywoodvampires #steventyler #joeperry #alicecooper #johnnydepp #newmusic #newsingle #newalbum #newrelease #keyboardist #vocalist #guitarist #rockmusic #popmusic #bluesmusic

As you know we've been doing a series of picks based on the idea of whether the artist is a one hit wonder or not. This month's pick is One Headlight off The Wallflower's 1996 Album “Bringing Down the Horse”, and was a smash hit for its time. The song was written by Jakob Dylan, band frontman and son of famous folk singer Bob Dylan. Join us at the end of the month to hear our thoughts on whether The Wallflowers are a one hit wonder, or is there more beyond One Headlight for us to know and love.

Good morning from Chinatown NYC, where there are no avocados in my 42-square foot (including counters and all appliances, listen, it's like walking a gang plank) kitchen, just a COVID test in-progress and some excellent coffee from Panther Coffee, based out of Miami. The owners, Joel and Leticia Pollock, are friends from the iteration of my life after Los Angeles, we met them in Portland, from whence they decamped for Miami, to open a coffee roasting business.“Nency, Nency, can you write something for us?” This is Leticia - and here I am badly botching her Brazilian accent - asking back in 2009 that I write to the local licensing bureau explaining what coffee roasting was, the idea being totally foreign and apparently causing officials to think someone was trying to burn down the city. I did; Panther opened in 2010 and now has something like four million locations in Miami (okay, six). You should go. We are going back further today! To 1990, when my daughter was less than a year old and I saw two young women my age pushing baby strollers past my house on the street that led up to the Hollywood Reservoir. Stay to the end for a sweet addendum. Two corrections: Charlie's first band was the Plugz. (The Cruzados were second.) And toward the end I accidentally say “mash the garlic” when of course I mean, mash the avocado. Also: COVID, negative.Episode notes: Charlie Quintana, whose first and only job besides as a drummer was delivering flowers for one day in his native El Paso. He was sixteen when the band he formed and The Plugz (video) became successful. Charlie went on to become part of the Cruzados, The Havalinas and other bands, and toured and/or recorded with Bon Dylan, Social Distortion, John Doe, Cracker, Joan Osborne and, if I am not mistaken, the Gin Blossoms. I remember (though I am finding no confirmation of) this because sometimes when Charlie played in Los Angeles he would nab me some tickets, and when the Wallflowers played at the Greek Theater, lead singer Jakob Dylan announced (I am not kidding here), “This goes out to Nancy,” before launching into, “One Headlight.” (I had told Charlie I loved the song.) Maybe I'm wrong! But that's my story and I'm sticking to it.Well lookie here, I found some audio of “Meet the Neighbors.” (Or you can read it.)“Charlie Quintana, drummer for the Plugz and Social Distortion, dies at 56,” by Randy Lewis (Los Angeles Times)“Taking My Ex Back In (for His Own Good),” by Nancy Rommelmann (New York Times Modern Love)Guacamole, adapted from Charlie Quintana* 5 ripe avocados* Salt* One-half yellow onion, chopped small* 2 - 3 jalapenos, chopped small, leave some seeds* Handful of cilantro, chopped* Juice of 2 - 3 limesMash the avocado and salt. (Mar 3, 2023) Kingston, Ontario singer-songwriter Julia Finnegan might be youthful in age, but her music will have a familiar vibe to Gen X children of the ‘80s and ‘90s. And her playful lyrics call on songs and artists who were on the charts well before she was born - from Derek and the Dominos to America, and from Bob Dylan... to Jakob Dylan. Finnegan's most recent album is called “Listen to the Wallflowers,” a title which works both as a metaphor, and as a literal tribute to the younger Dylan's band. On this week's North Words, Mitch Teich talks with Julia Finnegan about her songwriting, and her life as an up-and-coming Kingston musician.
On this episode we discuss the discography of The Wallflowers. We were a little too intimidated to take on Bob's discography, so we decided to tackle the more famous Dylan's discography instead ;)Don't like our rankings? Think we nailed it? Nora O'Connor is a Chicago-based musician whose vocal talents are the secret weapon behind some of the city's best performances and recordings. For much of 2013, O'Connor toured internationally as a singer in Iron and Wine, and she continues to record and perform with longtime collaborator Andrew Bird. Nora also plays bass and sings back-up for Kelly Hogan K(she recorded and toured with Hogan for her release I Like To Keep Myself In Pain on ANTI- Records) and in 2010, Wilco's Jeff Tweedy enlisted her and Hogan as primary vocalists on gospel legend Mavis Staples' Grammy Award-winning album You Are Not Alone. She has been most recently been touring with The Decemberists, singing harmonies and playing a bunch of their really nice guitars. In the studio and on the stage, Nora has backed (among others) Neko Case , Jakob Dylan, The New Pornographers, Archer Prewitt, Chris Mills, The Aluminum Group, Otis Clay, Justin Roberts and Robbie Fulks Though she may be primarily known for her signature honey-sweet vocals, Nora is also revered among her musician peers for her chops and versatility. She's a solid sender on guitar and bass, an enthusiastic and inspired collaborator, and always ninja-nimble and professional to a T -- just a few of the reasons why this lady's phone never stops ringing.
