ERIN ASH SULLIVAN“The lyrics are like short stories, each providing a brief, but telling glimpse into a moment…”-Jim Testa, Jersey BeatErin Ash Sullivan is a Massachusetts-based singer-songwriter whose music focuses on the power of story to build connection. Drawing from the lives of others as well as her own experiences as a daughter, wife, mother, and artist, Erin's songs harness language in unexpected ways to show the world through others' eyes.In the late 1990s, Erin co-founded the band Edith O with singer-songwriter Amy Speace, performed regularly at New York City venues including the Bitter End and CBGB's Gallery, and released an album, Tattooed Queen, which garnered critical raves. After many years as a teacher, administrator, and author, she has returned to writing music and performing and can be found on the Massachusetts open mic circuit. Her newest (as yet untitled) album is due out in 2020.

I should point out John was not responsible in any way for the horrible Baroque Disco tune Ian selected at the end of the 1st hour or the Reggae tune he selected - John will have words with Ian and remind him what good taste is artists featured in this week’s show were Nicholas Johnson, Robert Vincent, Dolly Parton, Oisin Hassan, Russell Watson(???? yes i know - Nothing to do with JJ), David Nixon's Navagation, Amy Speace, Laura Oakes, Jon Bonamassa, Muddy Waters and a lot more wonderful music Ian also tries to get to grips with JJ's handwriting !!

Amy Speace is a modern troubadour whose music is reminiscent of folk music’s 1970s glory days. She has spent the last 20 years on the road chasing her dreams from New York City to Nashville to around the world. She has built an international audience without the help of a major label performing an average of 150 shows a year including the Glastonbury Festival and NPR's Mountain Stage. Discovered and mentored by Judy Collins during the early 2000s, Speace left her career as a classically-trained Shakespearean actress and kicked off a string of acclaimed albums. She was championed by the likes of The New York Times and NPR for her solo work. I personally love her work as a member of Applewood Road, a harmony-heavy trio that I discovered one year at Folk Alliance. Me and The Ghost Of Charlemagne, her latest work, captures Amy at her now mature core, with stripped down songs that showcase her amazing voice and stellar songwriting chops. She’s no longer focused on the elusive holy grail of fame and fortune. She’s more than satisfied with the strange and crazy trip this life is. She is a reinvested and re-energized songwriter who is nowhere near finished with what she has to offer. I share my 2013 “origin story” with Amy at the beginning of this conversation. A lot has happened to the both of us in the intervening 6 years. Amy had just suffered the loss of her much beloved father less than two weeks before. We spoke right before her first show after having to cancel quite a few dates and I will always be most grateful for her kindness and consideration for granting me the opportunity to spend some quality time with one of my favorite Americana artists. We talk about mutual friends and acquaintances, navigating the “chaos” of a lyrical life, and an interesting perspective on showcasing at conferences and “building your brand” like Americanafest and Folk Alliance vis a’ vis more commercial musical pathways. I’m comforted with the thought our mutual music loving friend Tom Green was smiling down on us from the other side of the ether and sending us virtual hugs. Enjoy this conversation with folksinger Amy Speace!

Episode 101: Songwriter Amy Speace was entirely absorbed in theater, studying to be a Shakespearian actress in NYC. Then some fates and muses intervened and she began leaning into folk music. Before long she was recruited and mentored by the great Judy Collins, cultivating a voice that stands out even in the crowded songwriter scene of today. Now in Nashville, her story took another turn recently when she had her first child, a son, at age 50. Her complex observations about the world and herself pour out of the speakers on her newest, Me And The Ghost of Charlemagne. Also, a short phoner with Marty Stuart teasing the new mega-documentary Country Music by Ken Burns.

Folk Alley Sessions

Robby Hecht is a songwriter with a mission. He took it up before college, because he decided he wanted to sing and that part of that process should be creating his own songs. That was 18 years (or, as he says, half his lifetime) ago. Now, living in Nashville, he is still writing songs, on his own and with collaborators including Amy Speace. Nashville songwriter, Robby Hecht paid Folk Alley a visit in the spring of 2015 to play some songs and tell us about his approach to songwriting.

Folk Alley Sessions

At age 18, Robby Hecht made a "strangely confident and final" decision to commit to music as his calling and career. At college in Madison, Wisconsin, he poured out his first wave of song ideas but, as he approached performing, there were doubts. It was not until travels in Europe, a time in San Francisco where he formed the duo AllDay Radio, a move back to his hometown of Knoxville and a final shift to Nashville – that he learned he'd been suffering for years from bipolar disorder. Robby's newfound consistency and stability were rewarded with a rush of opportunities and victories. He placed second at the prestigious Telluride Troubadour Contest, a contest he would later win. He took a title at Kerrville New Folk Competition, a national nerve-center of contemporary songwriting. THE BARN BIRDS are a collaboration between veteran North Carolina Americana songsmith/guitarist Jonathan Byrd and Northwest singer/fiddler/guitarist Chris Kokesh, known for her work with Misty River. Jonathan and Chris Kokesh met in 2007 and dubbed themselves the Barn Birds when they made their first recordings together. The duo's self titled album is an album about romantic love expressed with sophisticated musicality, smart songs and great sound. Byrd and Kokesh include songs written with and by Amy Speace, Anthony da Costa, Carey West, Corin Raymond, Anais Mitchell, Rob Vaarmeyer, Luke Dick, and the late Jack Hardy. MELISSA FERRICK signed to Atlantic Records in the mid-90s. Ferrick was part of a new wave of alt-rock femalesincluding artists like Liz Phair, PJ Harvey and college-mate Paula Colewho sang about womanhood with sharp, unchecked honesty. Morrissey proved an early champion when he personally invited her to tour as his opening act, and Ferrick eventually went on to found her own label and release a string of albums and EPs (more than 16 to date) in which she played almost every instrument herself. She tours regularly and plays to packed houses across the U.S. Her latest is 'the truth is' on MPress Records.

Direct V-Day Show DownloadOkay, maybe it's not completely lovey-dovey, but upon examination of the songs I've predominantly used in this episode, some might think it's close... I'm a sap, n' it shows. ;)I tried over and over and over again to make the music I wanted to use in this episode line up to create a storytelling ep. of sorts, but nothing ever quiiite worked out- so I just used a refinement of my first list; where the items have been lined up the way they are because they just sound good that way. :) One could say that they're now in little thematic groupings of things like "love lost," "love gained" and "love sought," but the only two pieces w/real placement meaning are those placed at the very end. ("Where Beauty Moves" and "Breakable.")Upon final examination (and the nagging feeling that I was missing something- which inspired this realization) I kind of wish I'd put "Where Beauty Moves" before "Strict Machine" (as the feelings of the song would go better together, it'd be a better transition from "Beauty" to "Machine," and it wouldn't be such a jarring change from "Sadeness" to "Beauty.."), but at this point the work is done, and I'm not up for re-doing the whole end of the show again, like I've already done once. ;) (It's a LOT of work! :)) Perhaps you'll decide to buy these tunes online or in your local area somewhere, and you can make your own fantabulous playlist. :):)Big props go out to ArielPublicity for access to so many songs for this episode, and as always to IodaPromonet n' the PMN!I hope this show inspires you and makes your heart grow fonder, and that you dig all the tunes herein. :)♥♥♥DJ Selchie, Your Siren of Song ;)Track List1. The New World Renaissance Band - Where Beauty Moves & Wit Delights (One of the loveliest male voices I've ever heard sings of how love doesn't always turn out the way we wish it would...)15. Ingrid Michaelson - Breakable (Both love and Life are two supremely precious commodities.)Background Music: Enigma - Sadeness Part 1 (The US Violent Remix)Overall message: We need to be careful with each other. Love is a treasure and so are the hearts and lives of the people around us in our lives. We should treat them accordingly. :) Lastly; I know that the quality of my microphone is still drek, but I hope that the quality of my music more than makes up for that. :):) Also, I hope that this Valentine's Day you find love in your life- no matter what form it takes. And that if you don't, you might at least find some cheer w/the music in this show, and that you keep your heart and hope open for love soon to come. :):)♥♥♥-DJS
