Episode 315: Adam Wright is one of the most thoughtful wordsmiths in the Nashville songwriting community, one who's seen all sides of the Music Row machine. Working for a dozen years with Carnival Music, he's carved a niche for himself, scoring a couple of Grammy Award nominations and landing cuts by Lee Ann Womack, Alan Jackson, Garth Brooks, Brandy Clark and Bruce Robison, among others. When he sets aside time to write songs purely for himself as an artist, remarkable things happen, and now he's releasing an epic 18-song collection called Nature Of Necessity, a masterwork that could only have been realized in Music City.

"What I Deserve" Over the course of almost fifteen albums, Kelly Willis has made a pretty good case that she's one of the greats. The Oklahoma-born singer/songwriter is not only a beautiful and affecting singer, her phrasing is filled with purring vowels, consonants fearlessly taking sharp corners and delicious diction which powers each number with authority, vulnerability and grace. Willis' career has a pretty good stockpile of highlights and here's a few for you: She's collaborated with Allison Kraus, Vince Gill, Jay Faraar of Son Volt and Chuck Prophet, a few of her songs were in Thelma and Louise, she was in the movie Bob Roberts, she's played all over the world, including Hardly Strictly Bluegrass here in San Francisco, put out a holiday album with her ex-husband Bruce Robison and is now celebrating the 25th anniversary of her 1999 album What I Deserve. And what to say about that album? Well, it's an absolute classic and the new edition is a must-have. Kelly is really sweet and very honest and this was a delight. www.kellywillis.com (http://www.kellywillis.com) www.bombshellradio.com (http://www.bombshellradio.com) www.stereoembersmagazine.com (http://www.stereoembersmagazine.com) www.alexgreenbooks.com Instagram: @emberspodcast Bluesky: @emberspodcast Editor: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com (mailto:editor@stereoembersmagazine.com)

The larger Pacific striped octopus is unusually social. But it wasn't recognized by scientists until 2015, despite one man's efforts. And, a deep-sea squid in the family Gonatidae was filmed cradling large eggs for its body size, which suggests it's an entirely new species. Why It Took Decades For This Octopus To Be RecognizedOctopus mating behaviors can be quite deadly. Many species are cannibalistic, making the entire prospect of mating dangerous, and female octopuses often die after laying one clutch of eggs. Their cannibalistic tendencies mean that octopuses don't socialize as much as other animals. But the larger Pacific striped octopus (LPSO) is different. For one, they live together in colonies. And mating is not only a safer proposition, it involves beak-to-beak “kissing.” Plus, females can lay eggs repeatedly, even tending to embryos at various stages of development. But because these behaviors are so uncharacteristic of most octopuses, the scientific community didn't officially recognize their existence until 2015, despite the decades-long effort of a Panamanian diver and artist named Arcadio Rodaniche. When he tried to share his findings about the LPSO at a symposium and publish them in a journal, he was flatly rejected. But his persistent research and documentation of the species would eventually be validated when researchers were able to obtain and observe the octopuses in captivity.SciFri producer Kathleen Davis sits down with freelance science writer Kenna Hughes-Castleberry to talk about an article she reported for Science Friday about the late Rodaniche and his yearslong effort to get official scientific recognition for the LPSO.Read the story at sciencefriday.com.Squid With ‘Giant' Eggs Could Be A New SpeciesTo finish up our celebration of Cephalopod Week we wanted to share a bit of squid news. A group of researchers recently identified a potentially new squid species in the family Gonatidae. Scientists took a closer look at some video footage captured back in 2015 and found a deep-water squid that was cradling some rather large eggs, which was not in line with other squid of the same family.John Dankosky talks with Dr. Bruce Robison, midwater ecologist and senior scientist at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute, about this new discovery.Transcripts for each segment will be available after the show airs on sciencefriday.com.  Subscribe to this podcast. Singer-songwriter Bruce Robison is famous for writing highly intelligent, richly detailed country songs—that happen also to be incredibly sad. (See “Angry All the Time,” by Tim McGraw and Faith Hill, and “Travelin' Soldier,” by the Chicks.) This week, he focuses on a track that first taught him how emotionally sophisticated country music can be, “Walkin,'” off Willie's 1974 masterpiece, Phases and Stages...before describing his own Willie tribute song, “What Would Willie Do,” and the weird reception Willie got in Bruce's hometown, rural Bandera, Texas, when he moved his band and family there after fleeing Nashville in 1971. (Hint: The hippies and rednecks didn't start getting along until Willie got to Austin a year later.)

For some, the process of making music can appear effortless. For others, bringing one's music to life might take decades. The music welling up in the heart and mind of its creator, like a fine wine, or in this case, one of the finest debut albums, by any artist, in any genre, in many decades. One could say that Tommy Taylor has one of those classic “you don't know me, but you've heard me” musician stories. He has spent years as the drummer and backing vocalist behind singer/songwriter (Grammy and Oscar winner) Christopher Cross and guitarist Eric Johnson. Tommy has also played behind: Stevie Ray Vaughan, Charlie Sexton, Will Sexton, Sara Hickman, Charlie and Bruce Robison, Kelly Willis, Jake Andrews, Jerry Jeff Walker, Ray Benson and Shawn Colvin.Tommy has been preparing himself and his music for years to become the album Across The Stars. It is a recording comprised of what Taylor calls “Chekovian vignettes” - nine cinematic stories filtered through a lifetime of insights and emotions, delivered in his tenor voice that falls somewhere between the lilt of Jackson Browne's and the edge of Don Henley. Taylor's lyrics are incredibly personal and incredibly universal simultaneously. Who hasn't felt like the people in your life were there to “Let You Down?” Taylor describes himself as an observer. However, the songs on this album are filled with the stories and experience you get by living - not by watching. At the end of the 9 songs, you are left with a man's personal catharsis, and you are the richer for having had the experience. After years of his friends and colleagues encouraging Tommy to write his songs and get them recorded, Taylor finally went in the studio and started work on the album. With a little help from Christopher Cross, legendary record producer and keyboardist Michael Omartian (Christopher Cross, Donna Summer, Rod Stewart, Amy Grant, Steely Dan, Glen Campbell, Boz Scaggs, Jerry Garcia and Dolly Parton) agreed to play on Tommy's album.  After finishing his work and hearing the final mixes Michael said: “Man, this is a really good album. Everything sounds great. Wonderful songs and the overall production and musicianship is first rate.” That was on top of praise for Taylor's vocals on various tracks, and his declaration that the song “Everybody's Gonna Let You Down” “sounds like a smash.” You might catch yourself singing along to that chorus the very first time you hear it.Michael Omartian's words are a priceless endorsement, especially for an artist whose debut work has taken a few decades to arrive. But in his Across The Stars liner notes, Taylor explains, “This first effort is a culmination of a lifetime of personal ups and downs, and interests and pursuits.” Isn't that a perfect description of a life well-lived? Across the Stars was released on September 22nd, 2023.https://tommytaylor.com/homeSupport the showThanks for listening for more information or to listen to other podcasts or watch YouTube videos click on this link >https://thetroutshow.com/

pWotD Episode 2427: The Chicks Welcome to popular Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of a popular Wikipedia page every day. With 419,934 views on Sunday, 24 December 2023 our article of the day is The Chicks. The Chicks (formerly the Dixie Chicks) are an American country music band from Dallas, Texas. Since 1995, the band has consisted of Natalie Maines (lead vocals, guitar) and sisters Martie Maguire (vocals, fiddle, mandolin, guitar) and Emily Strayer (vocals, guitar, banjo, Dobro). Maguire and Strayer, both née Erwin, founded the band in 1989 in Dallas, Texas, with bassist Laura Lynch and vocalist and guitarist Robin Lynn Macy. They performed bluegrass and country music, busking and touring the bluegrass festival circuits and small venues for six years without attracting a major label. In 1992, Macy left and Lynch became the lead vocalist. Upon signing with Monument Records Nashville in 1997 and replacing Lynch with Maines, the Dixie Chicks achieved success with their albums Wide Open Spaces (1998) and Fly (1999). After Monument closed its Nashville branch, the Dixie Chicks moved to Columbia Records for Home (2002). These albums achieved multi-platinum sales in the United States, Canada, and Australia, along with several charting singles on the American Billboard Hot Country Songs charts. "There's Your Trouble", "Wide Open Spaces", "You Were Mine", "Cowboy Take Me Away", "Without You", and a cover of Bruce Robison's "Travelin' Soldier" reached number one. The Dixie Chicks also reached number one on the Adult Contemporary chart with their 2002 cover of Fleetwood Mac's "Landslide".Days before the 2003 invasion of Iraq, Maines told a London audience that the Dixie Chicks did not endorse the war and were ashamed of US President George W. Bush being from Texas. The remarks triggered boycotts in the US and a backlash from fans. After a hiatus, the Dixie Chicks released Taking the Long Way in 2006, an album informed by the backlash. "Not Ready to Make Nice" became their biggest crossover single, reaching number four on the Billboard Hot 100. After another hiatus, Maguire and Strayer released an album in 2009 as the Court Yard Hounds. The Dixie Chicks reunited to tour in the 2010s. In 2020, they removed "Dixie" from their name, citing negative connotations, and released their first album in 14 years, Gaslighter. The Chicks have won 13 Grammy Awards, including five in 2007 for Taking the Long Way, which received the Grammy Award for Album of the Year, and its single "Not Ready to Make Nice", which received the Grammy Award for Record of the Year and the Grammy Award for Song of the Year. By July 2020, with 33 million certified albums sold and sales of 27.9 million albums in the US, the Chicks had become the best-selling all-woman band and best-selling country group in the US during the Nielsen SoundScan era (1991–present).This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:58 UTC on Monday, 25 December 2023.For the full current version of the article, see The Chicks on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Aria Neural.

Willie Nelson is a world-renowned musical legend, but in Texas, he's something more: a beloved native son and benevolent elder who's brought countless new talents into the family fold — often during the famed Luck Reunions at his ranch outside of Austin. As Willie's 89th birthday neared, Luck Presents, the entity creating those events, and Bruce Robison, the singer-songwriter, producer and force behind all-analog record label The Next Waltz, wanted to celebrate his influence and impact with a Texas-sized party. On May 1, 2022, Sheryl Crow, Nathaniel Rateliff, Steve Earle, Robert Earl Keen, Margo Price, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Vincent Neil Emerson, Shinyribs, Emily Gimble and Robison serenaded their inspiration with songs plucked from the greatest canon in American music. Fortunately, Robison rolled tape. The result, One Night in Texas: The Next Waltz's Tribute to the Red Headed Stranger, will be released on April 28, 2023 — one day before Willie turns 90. A new study from the National Education Association shows that, while Texas pays new teachers relatively well, our most experienced teachers are paid far less than the national average, lagging behind by $13,000 per year. A program launched last month to provide legal representation to low-income inmates at the Travis County Jail only made it nine days before exhausting its supply of staff. March of 2022 was officially the busiest month in the history of Austin Bergstrom International Airport, with nearly two million passengers departing and/or arriving - a 146% increase from the prior March. Chef Mashama Bailey, who runs the new Diner Bar and Grey Market in Austin's Thompson Hotel, has been named one of five finalists for the James Beard Award for best chef in the country, while Edgar Rico of Nixta Taqueria, Iliana de la Vega of El Naranjo, and Dai Due owner Jesse Griffiths are all semifinalists in various James Beard subcategories. An aggressive raccoon has set up shop on the University of Texas campus - as of yesterday it had bitten three students. UT officials advise that everyone steer clear. Adelbert's Brewing has announced that it will close as of the end of this October, as the building it has occupied for 11 years is set to be demolished. The brewery does not plan to relocate. Eeyore's Birthday Party, possibly Austin's most authentic celebration of weirdness, returns to Pease Park after a three year absence on Saturday. Nearby Georgetown has been identified in a survey as the best small city in Texas for starting a new business. A busy live music weekend approaches, with the official Moody Center grand opening shows with George Strait and Willie Nelson Friday and Saturday, Friday shows with My Morning Jacket at Waterloo Park's Moody Amphitheater, Built to Spill at the Mohawk, and AJR at Germania Insurance Amphitheater. Saturday sees Hot Chip at Stubb's, The Wailers at the Haute Spot and Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats at Moody Amphitheater at Waterloo Park, and on Sunday a Willie Nelson birthday celebration at Luck Ranch with Bruce Robison, Robert Earl Keen, Ray Wylie Hubbard and more, and Tori Amos at ACL Live. A little warmer today as we hit 85, and warmer still for the weekend with upper 80's Friday through Sunday, with a decent chance of early morning rain on Friday and a more middling chance through the weekend.

It is a cliché that blood is thicker than water, but its also true. And my next guests are living proof. Bonnie and Eleanor Whitmore of the Whitmore Sisters have just released their first album as a duo. Ghost Stories is an emotional powerhouse. And it is full of inspiration. Eleanor and Bonnie have been in and around the Americana genre for pretty much their whole lives. Eleanor and her husband Chris Masterson make up folk rock duo The Mastersons, and they also play in Steve Earle's backing band The Dukes. Bonnie, meanwhile, has released a number albums over the years and has played with a who's who—James McMurtry, Bruce Robison, Kelly Willis, on and on and on. Despite their roots, Ghost Stories is their first album together, and let's hope there's more to come. We talk about four songs —Hurtin' for a Letdown, Ghost Stories, Greek Tragedy, and The Ballad of Sissy and Porter. We talk about death, drugs, influences, and, of course, songwriting. We also talk about life—celebrating and appreciating the simple act of being alive. This interview gets pretty heavy at times, so be ready. It is my high honor to welcome Eleanor and Bonnie Whitmore to For Songs.

ALL HEART MULTI-HYPHENATEActor/Musician Savannah Welch is known for her acting roles in the HBO Max series TITANS, Oscar nominated film BOYHOOD directed by Richard Linklater; TREE OF LIFE starring Brad Pitt and Jessica Chastain; and a recurring guest starring role as ex-Marine Dawn on the History Channel's SIX…among a colorful portfolio of independent films, in which Welch often deep dives into characters informed by varying degrees of music.Growing up in Nashville, she was submerged in the southern culture of the country music industry, raised by her beautiful Okie folks who miraculously evolved into progressive hippies of the 80's variety. The landscape was a terrain of spiritual sculpture and creative inspiration with permission to follow it; yet, the level of talent and validity existing within this environment scripted intimidation that set a bar too high to start. Most influential were the musicians and songwriters including her acclaimed father, Kevin Welch, and prodigious older brother Dustin. Savannah decided that's what “they” did, and pursued a career in film production and acting…all the while, playing and writing songs when no one was looking. She co-wrote many songs that have been cut on other artists' records, including the title track on the Bruce Robison and Kelly Willis' Americana Music Awards album of the year nominated, Cheater's Game, I Had To Give That Up Too recorded by Sammy Kershaw, and is the recipient of several SESAC Awards. Eventually, performing caught up to her and she became one of the founding members of the Texas/Tennessee collaborative girl group, The Trishas.Savannah has always been passionate about parenting, long before she had her son. With a sound rooted in folk, shaped by classic country, and heavily influenced by the Texas 'Twang', Dallas has been on a rapid rise since his debut album in 2019 'Southern Wind'. That album reached Number 25 on the UK Americana Chart and Number 4 on the US Alt-Country chart, paving the way for a string of cross-country shows alongside fellow road warriors like Charley Crockett. Now, Dallas just released his new self-titled album, (Out July 23rd) a record about embracing maturity and the responsibilities of family life, sung by Burrow in a voice that bears both the road-worn weariness of a lifelong highwayman and the fierce fire of a man reborn. Produced by legendary Bruce Robison, this is one album that will captivate audiences from the first listen. Songs and Music from She's the One que Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers pusieron en el mercado en 1996 será reeditada a primeros de julio con cuatro temas inéditos. Escuchar audio

The Years: A Musicfest Tribute to Cody Canada and the Music of Cross Canadian Ragweed. #139 - Get A Leg Up With Chad Harvey

It's been a solid 12 years, packed with earned life experiences and songwriting since Chad Harvey has released a new studio album. 2008 saw the release of his Get Lit album which provided a platform to tour through 2011. Initially to Harvey, that was a good thing. “The live shows to me are what it's all about. That is where you connect with your fans and I lay it all out there on the line and don't hold anything back—whether we are playing for five people or 500 people.” The relentless schedule started to show its weight and while being nudged by the label (Indie 500 Records) to start tracking the follow-up album, Harvey admits: “I was getting to the point of burn out; playing several nights a week while having to still maintain a day job to survive in Nashville.” He knew some rejuvenation was needed and took a two-week trip to Australia. On his flight back to the States he met his future wife and now they share two children with a full life. . . Except for one thing, Harvey exclaims: “Music!”  With his creative cannon loaded and idea book bursting with new song titles, Harvey tracked Run From the Sound in 2015 alongside his longtime GRAMMY®-nominated producer Marc Johnson.  Every once in awhile a singer-songwriter comes along that moves people to action—not necessarily a message to politicians for peace in wartime but instead a holler to the wallflowers to grab a cold beer and cut the rug at the local honky-tonk, sometimes a call to an estranged lover to come home—Chad Harvey is a songwriter whose songs do all of these things and more.   Chad Harvey is a true American original born in Evansville, and raised in nearby Lynnville—that's Southern Indiana to the uninformed—just down the highway from Indiana's most famous musical export, John Mellencamp. . . an artist to whom Harvey has been compared. However, Harvey is far from a knock-off, Harvey delivers his self-penned emotive stories with an inimitable whiskey-stained voice. “Heyburn,” inspired by the small town of Heyburn, Idaho, spotlights Harvey's ability to capture the voice of the many living in small towns across America and it's because he was one of them. “This song idea came from a friend of mine, Craig Smith. He was traveling through Idaho and stopped for the night in Heyburn. He called me that night and told me about the place and how there was not much going on in the town, and how he imagined that if he lived there, he would want to get out. This struck a chord with me as it reminded me exactly of my hometown of Lynnville, Indiana. A small town of about 500 people in Southwestern Indiana that was built in the middle of the coal mines. Growing up there, all I wanted to do is get out and see what else was out there in the world.”     A gifted writer and performer equipped with a six-string Gibson and a Midwestern drawl, Harvey also sports rough and tumble good looks reminiscent of a young Elvis Presley and a cool swagger that calls to mind another Hoosier native named James Dean. Through his songs, he says what he means and means what he says.  With aspirations greater than what Indiana had to offer, Chad fled to Nashville, TN where he enrolled at Belmont University to “learn about the record business;” however, he found himself learning more about the music business by meeting people, listening to classic records, and watching bands perform live in local clubs.   On one cold winter night, a pivotal moment happened, Chad tuned in to Austin City Limits to watch John Prine perform; and on the same show, he discovered an artist who would help guide his musical direction: Todd Snider. Considering this a sign, Harvey picked up and moved to Austin to walk the same Texas soil as his heroes and to develop his own songwriting chops and performing skills.    Through Snider, Harvey was introduced to the Texas music scene that included Jerry Jeff Walker, Jack Ingram, Guy Clark, Chris Knight, Billy Joe Shaver, Charlie Robison, Bruce Robison to name a few. Chad proceeded to play every honky-tonk, voodoo haunt, and BBQ joint with a makeshift stage on the same trail blazed by Steve Earle and Townes Van Zandt years earlier including being a regular at the prestigious Kent Finlay's open mic night at Cheatham Street Warehouse in San Marcos, TX.  Chad Harvey eventually moved back to Indiana to record his first full-length effort, Get Lit, backed by an amazing cast of supporting musicians including Mellencamp-alum Dane Clark on drums, GRAMMY®-winner Lloyd Maines on steel, and three-time GRAMMY®-winner Larry Franklin on fiddle. The end result was an astonishingly cool slice of Americana. ‘Get Lit' was released in 2008 and broke into the Americana top 100 and Chad toured extensively throughout the southeast and Midwest supporting the release.  “Run From The Sound,” the title track off the new album, brings an introspective Tom Petty lyrical approach with a Mike Campbell-style approach to the guitar tracks. “This song was somewhat of a surprise to me,” notes Harvey.  “When I arrived at the Pop Machine Studio to start tracking the record, Marc Johnson (Producer) said that he wanted me to hear something. He played me the song and I was immediately drawn to it. After listening to it a few times, I realized what the song was about. He wrote it about a relationship I had been in several years before. The song captured everything about it. I added a few of my touches to the song and we cut it.”   The vitality of Chad's live shows is captured in Run From the Sound standouts such as “Heyburn,” “Rescue Me,” “Run From The Sound” and “Nashville Intermezzo.” Get in your pick-up truck, turn up the speakers as loud as they can go, and listen to Chad Harvey tell the truth…or at least something close to it. Escuchar audio

On Episode 121, I'm joined by Tony Kamel of Austin band Wood & Wire. The bluegrass Americana outfit just released their fourth studio full-length, the excellent No Matter Where It Goes from Here, a few weeks back. Working out of The Zone out in Dripping Springs, Texas with co-producer/engineer Pat Manske, the quartet has been able to stretch their legs. Mainly by having ample time to experiment with fresh and new recording setups and utilize the studio's vast array of vintage analog gear. With that in mind, Wood & Wire's latest sees the band pushing their boundaries creating a dynamic, robust, and vibrant sonic punch. Songs like "Pigs" and "Home and the Banjo" offer clever, introspective commentary on society while the epic closing rambler "Clamp's Chute" scratches that bluegrass instrumental jam itch.During this conversation, we talk about the recording and writing of the album, how the pandemic has affected Kamel's creative process, the joy & frustration of that creative process, recording at Bruce Robison's The Next Waltz, and Wood & Wire's democratic approach to creating songs and albums. This episode's presenting partner is Desert Door Texas Sotol. Así nació “Burn My Bridges”.

On Episode 88, I'm joined by Reckless Kelly lead vocalist and chief lyricist Willy Braun. This year, the pioneering Americana Country outfit is doing a first with the release of American Jackpot / American Girls, two 10-song full-length albums released the same day. Much as the titles allude, the 20 songs of American Jackpot and American Girls give Braun and company ample of space to explore a multitude of American themes without ever settling in on a "Rah Rah Rah" tired trope. Rather, songs seek out the true essence of the American Spirit with songs about Jackie Robinson, Tom Petty, grandfathers, Grand Canyon mule rules, Western exploration, rural living, a necessary reminder that we're a country of immigrants, the search for a sense of belonging, and that longing for home. Over the course of this hour, Braun and I talk at length about the recording of their latest album (due out Friday, May 22), songwriting, the affects of the Coronavirus on touring bands (and festival curators), playing drums, and working with the likes of fellow Idaho native Jeff Crosby, Jamie Lin Wilson, Jack Ingram, and Bruce Robison (and various multiple collaborators during The Next Waltz sessions). "Come Back Down", es una invitación a volver a casa tras estar demasiado tiempo fuera. I caught up with singer-songwriter/multi-instrumentalists Chris Masterson and Eleanor Whitmore at the 2020 Folk Alliance International Conference in New Orleans. Due to circumstances beyond our control, we were booted out of the Media Room I had reserved so that NPR’s Anne Powers could do an impromptu interview with Ani DiFranco. No worries, The Mastersons went with the flow and we conducted our conversation in my hotel room while they were perched on my bedside with my lavalier mic attached to my water bottle handle. They could not have been more gracious and accommodating. When they're not touring the world as valued longtime members of Steve Earle's band the Dukes, the musical and marital twosome make inspired albums of their own emotionally vivid, deeply humanistic songs. Experience is something they have aplenty. Prior to coming together as a musical duo (they married in 2009), Masterson and Whitmore were both seasoned veterans of the Americana and Texas music scenes. Masterson spent his teens playing the blues in Houston clubs before landing hired-gun gigs with acts as varied as Jack Ingram and Son Volt, while the Denton-born Whitmore grew up performing in a family band with her folk- singer dad, Alex, and sister Bonnie (now a solo singer-songwriter) before playing fiddle and violin on dozens of album sessions for the likes of Bruce Robison, Slaid Cleaves, and Shooter Jennings. By their own admission, they are here to “serve the songs.” The Mastersons, who now call Los Angeles home after stints in Austin, Brooklyn and Terlingua, Texas; recorded their soon to be released “No Time for Love Songs” at L.A.'s legendary Sunset Sound Recorders with Shooter Jennings; it was engineered and mixed by five-time Grammy Award-winning engineer, Ryan Freeland. Shooter had recruited The Mastersons to play on his albums Family Man (2012) and The Other Life (2013), and they’d recently reunited to work on the now Grammy award winning Tanya Tucker's comeback album While I'm Livin', which Jennings co-produced with Brandi Carlile. As our country becomes more divided," Chris observes, "it makes it harder to connect with loved ones and friends that disagree. Fundamentally we all want the same things, but we're pitted against each other by extreme rhetoric on both sides. If we can lead with kindness and empathy, there is a way out." "Only by cataloging and acknowledging loss and grief can we move forward with gratitude for what we have." I agree 100%. Enjoy this conversation with Chris Masterson and Eleanor Whitmore, The Mastersons!

THE TROUBADOUR PODCAST - The Premier Red Dirt, Texas Country and Independent Music Podcast

Through this podcast, Carly and I have got to interview some of the biggest names in Texas Country, Americana and Red Dirt Music.  Every now and then though, we get to interview people who I truly consider heroes of mine.  This episode, featuring one of the best writers to ever come out of Texas, Bruce Robison, definitely checks all the boxes for me.  For songwriter geeks like me, you’re undoubtedly already aware of Bruce’s work.  However, if you’re not one of those people who always tries to figure out who wrote what song, Bruce’s name may not immediately ring a bell.  Nevertheless, you know some of his songs; I guarantee it.  Here’s just a few Bruce Robison songs made famous by other artists: “Angry All the Time” – Tim McGraw - #1 – 2001 “Travelin’ Soldier” – Dixie Chicks - #1 – 2002 “Wrapped” – George Strait - #2 – 2007 It’s hard to know where to start and where to stop with a life and career like Bruce Robison’s.  Bruce is married to singer-songwriter, Kelly Willis and is the brother of country artist Charlie Robison.  In this interview we touch a little on both of those members of Bruce’s immediate family. I really enjoy the portion of the interview when we get to talk about Bruce’s project called The Next Waltz along with his recent production of the West-Texas super group, the Panhandlers.  Please check them out! I’ll let the episode and Bruce’s commentary speak for itself but this episode is a gem. To check out Bruce’s website and to find our where he’ll be playing next click HERE.

Making America Home Again. A look at the expanding Trump Economy and increasing optimism towards pursuing the American Dream. President Trump goes on offense against Sen. Chuck Schumer's "Diversity Visa Lottery" in the aftermath of ISIS truck terror in New York City. A hypocritical Schumer, playing last-ditch defense, decries Trump's "politicizing" of immigration issues. Meanwhile, we make note of the 100th Anniversary of the Russian Revolution and explore "Communism's Bloody Century." We ponder why so many American millenials seem favorably disposed towards Joseph Stalin and Vladimir Lenin. Are they unaware that communism has claimed at least 65 million lives since 1917? What systemic failures in America's education system have allowed for such historical illiteracy? Could some Friedrich Hayek help? Meanwhile, we survey the upcoming election for Governor in Virginia, where the stakes are high for nervous Democrats. If they lose, could they be facing their own civil war? Will Democrats be able to recover from their infamous 'racist black pickup' backfire? With Listener Calls & Music via the Smithereens, Kelly Willis and Bruce Robison.
