Once considered polar opposites, country music and rap have had a bit of a moment together as of late with artists like Jelly Roll & Post Malone and releases like Beyonce's Cowboy Carter hitting the charts. The thing is, Brooklyn, NY born bluegrass/hip-hop group Gangstagrass have been doing it since 2007. Returning guest, sociologist Alana Anton, brings us their latest release: 'The Blackest Thing On The Menu', and makes the case that these genres have more in common than record label marketers would have us believe. Songs discussed in this episode: Long Hard Times To Come (Justified Main Theme), Freedom - Gangstagrass; Feathered Indians - Tyler Childers; The Only Way Out Is Through - Gangstagrass; Rebel Without A Pause - Public Enemy; Good At Being Bad - Gangstagrass; Hunger Strike - Temple Of The Dog; Up High Do Or Die, Gone Gone - Gangstagrass; Texas Hold 'Em - Beyonce; You Can Have The Crown (Sturgill Simpson Cover) - Post Malone; Mother, Obligatory Braggadocio, Avenue B, Palette, It's Alive, Sankofa, Mother (Instrumental Jam Mix) - Gangstagrass
Gangstagrass, formed in 2006, gained widespread attention when their song "Long Hard Times to Come" became the theme for the hit show Justified, earning an Emmy nomination. Known for blending bluegrass and hip-hop, the band has topped the Billboard bluegrass charts, a groundbreaking achievement for an album featuring hip-hop MCs. Their fifth studio album, No Time For Enemies, released in 2020, was largely recorded during the COVID-19 lockdown and hit #1 on the bluegrass charts. In 2021, they became quarter-finalists on America's Got Talent, further solidifying their unique impact on American music.Official Website: GangstagrassYouTube: Gangstagrass on YouTubeSpotify: Gangstagrass on SpotifyApple Music: Gangstagrass on Apple MusicSocial Media Links:https://linktr.ee/turnonthemusicWelcome to Turn On the Music Podcast, where we dive deep into the world of music and explore its many facets. Celebrating Black History month again with this weeks episode. Gangstagrass is a totally original group blending Hip Hop and Bluegrass in a way that stops you in your tracks. They have graced the stages of America's Got Talent, the Glastonbury Festival (right after Paul McCartney) and many other roots/rap festivals. We had a genuinely fun conversation about the roots of both of these styles of music, segregation in the music industry and much more. Enjoy!
Super excited to announce new guest, Jessica Smucker, to The Story!Jessica Smucker believes that the best way to change the world is to channel our pain into connection. Her songs have a way of reaching deeply into people's souls and inviting the kind of reflection that feels both reassuring and unsettling. Wrapped in catchy melodies, her lyrics appear simple and relatable on the surface, but each listen will uncover more hidden pockets of nuance. She's the kind of writer and performer who can lull a noisy room into a hush with a single line.Jessica is based in Lancaster, PA, very near the tiny rural town of Bird-in-Hand where she grew up.She has toured nationwide, opened for national acts like Cheryl Wheeler and Bill Staines, and shared billing with Heather Maloney, Meghan Trainor, Gangstagrass, and the Stray Birds. She has won or placed in numerous national songwriting contests including SolarFest's Singer/Songwriter Showcase Competition, the Connecticut Folk Festival Song Competition, and the Mid-Atlantic Song Contest. Her discography spans from 2008-2020 and includes two EPs and three full-length albums, and a handful of singles released in 2021-22. She hopes to release a fourth album sometime next year.In her life beyond music, Jessica is a published poet and essayist, a social justice warrior, freakishly good at Scrabble, and mother to two of the smartest people she's ever met in real life. You can find Jessica and her projects here:Website: https://jessicasmucker.com/Find The Story Podcast here: coryrosenproductions.com/podcastsSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-story/donations

It would be very easy to think that rap and hip hop have little if anything in common with music like bluegrass and old time. After all, we have been led to believe that these styles of music come from cultures on opposite sides of the musical spectrum. How could the two have any common ground? Actually, they have many more connections than you might imagine. This connection is embodied in groups like Gangstagrass and in recent work by Jake Blount, and as members of Gangstagrass point out in our conversation here, rap and folk music both stem from the same instincts. At its heart, this is about a musical path that diverged centuries ago, or at least seemed to.In this episode we speak with Dolio the Sleuth, Rench the Mastermind and B.E. Farrow of Gangstagrass, as well as Dan Tyminski, who performed with them last fall, and we welcome Dr. Jordan Laney of Virginia Tech and the Virginia Rural Health Association, and author, podcaster and former editor at No Depression and Folk Alley, Kim Ruehl, as we unravel a story that began centuries ago, but has only recently reached a pivotal chapter in its history. Gangstagrass Songs heard in this episode:“Floo-id” by Turbo Pro Project, from Daydream, excerpt“The Downward Road” featuring Demeanor, by Jake Blount, from The New Faith, excerpt“Ride With You” by Gangstagrass, from No Time For Enemies, excerpt“Talking Columbia” by Woody Guthrie, from Hard Travelin': The Asch Recordings, Vol. 3, excerpt“Nickel and Dime Blues” by Gangstagrass, from No Time For EnemiesWe are glad you came by, and are even more grateful whenever you share this with someone. We had the pleasure of interviewing HuDost over Zoom video! HuDost's new album, ‘Anthems of Home', is a lush, breathtaking original collection of compositions that ask important questions and evoke the imagery of dreams. The music of HuDost weaves a seamless tapestry of folk, world, and rock that renders tears and laughter in listeners, cultivating the nameless longing that abides somewhere in all our hearts and invoking total celebration. HuDost's core musicians are Moksha Sommer, from Montréal, and Jemal Wade from Kentucky. “2020 and 2021 have been a time of conflict and resolution, pain and discovery, challenge and grace, fear and courage for almost everyone. As parents, social activists, and musicians, we have gone through this time of challenge with the hope of keeping our minds, hearts, and arms open. We feel that our new album gives voice to this journey in a way that will remain timeless and will prove the resilience that we all share. It also gives room for the greater vision of what is and what can be and the love that emerges when we allow truth to be seen and spoken.” Moksha Sommer, HuDostHuDost's previous album 'of Water + Mercy' received rave reviews and as an independent release reached #24 in the BILLBOARD SALES CHARTS for Folk/Americana also winning the 2020 Independent Music Award for Social Action Song. In the last year they also received two of the 'Best of Nashville 2020' awards. ‘Anthems of Home' continues in this current of Folk/Americana with the added movement of ambient electro in some songs and unapologetic groove in others.HuDost released ‘Our Words Will Be Louder', the album opener, as a means to encourage people to take positive action by voting in the 2020 election. Some of the song's video cameos include Jars of Clay, The Accidentals, Christie Lenée, Kevin Clash (Elmo), Kevin Hearn (from the Barenaked Ladies), Cy Curnin (from The FIXX), GangstaGrass, Alana Bridgewater, Nawal, Hymn for Her, Jai Uttal, and more.Watch Here HuDost's music is a powerful voice for life's journey and discovery. It is through music that the losses and gains, pains and triumphs, and excruciating beauty of life can be given a voice of empathy. Both critics and fans have said time and time again that the music of HuDost is this very expression. We want to hear from you! Rench from bluegrass, hip-hop band Gangstagrass talks about racial unity, surviving as a musician during the pandemic, balancing career and parenting, and living with Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria (RSD) which can occur along with ADHD and is sometimes misdiagnosed as bipolar disorder. Dealing with social anxiety, mood swings and learning new skills to live better with RSD. The importance of not being too self-critical, being understanding and flexible, and finishing the “No Time For Enemies” album during the pandemic. Rench treats us with a special acoustic performance of “Lone Dogs.” Musician and music agent with United Talent Agency, Daniel McCartney, shares his personal reasons for creating his nonprofit The Continuance Foundation. P&C drink and review Black Sheep Ale, then discuss ganster rap, outlaw country, and what's similar and different about them. In outlaw country, the emphasis is that mama tried, but the singer ended up bad anyway. In gangster rap, there seems to be a celebration of being on the bad side of the moral code. And now we have ganstagrass, a band who made the theme song for the hit TV show Justified. When bluegrass gets mixed with rap, who's appropriating whose culture?

Hey folks, here's last Sunday's show with Kelly Babcock at the mic. We heard some great music from folks like Moo'd Swing, TangleFoot, Gangstagrass, Corin Raymond, Robert Tite, William Prince, The Krueger Band, Tim Harrison, Sylvie Annette Kindree & Mike Weir, Richard Garvey, and Ian Sherwood.
Hip-Hop just might be the most malleable of musical genres -- it is built off of the foundations of so many other genres, and is itself perhaps the most mashiest up of all musical mashups -- so by its very nature, blending in other genres -- from jazz to Latin to classical have often proven to be often surprisingly fluid And if you are the type to consider its literary qualities, the same could be said about its immense spectrum of subject matter. Indeed, Hip-Hop easily rivals most traditional literary movements in its ability to encapsulate so much of the human condition within its linguistic art. When done right, these artistic conglomerates can be creative, inventive, inspiring, and help build intellectual and musical bridges. Think Hamilton’s merging of Hip-Hop and traditional American musical. Or Guru’s Jazzamatazz series. With all of this though, there are still certain combinations that, to many, are simply too much oil and water. Too incompatible. You won’t hear a lot of Polka Rap after all. Country music was once considered this sort of Hip-Hop antithesis. Musically it’s not impossible -- generally a 4/4 style of music, more influenced by pop these days -- it COULD be done… Perhaps the perceived divides -- both in musical taste and often, ideology-- between the demographics of the fans of each of these respective genre made the idea less tolerable than say, rap and rock. Also, attempts at mashing up rap and rock have, for a variety of reasons, been traditionally well-received. Rap and country, not so much. Credit is due, of course, to Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus for re-opening this door, and though seen to many as a bit gimmicky, the effect on the zeitgeist was unquestionable. Still, in such a polarized world, can there exist a true merging of Hip-Hop and Country -- or even its more traditional subgenre, Bluegrass. One that doesn’t try to sugarcoat those ideological differences between fanbases. One that is unafraid to forcefully address even the most sensitive social justice issues, as Hip-Hop is wont to do, uncompromising even in the face of potentially unwelcoming audiences. But one that does so with the kind of musical authenticity that will influence fans of the genre to open their ears to those messages, and arms to those messengers. Gangstagrass says hell yea, and an enthusiastic fanbase on both sides of the musical aisle, agree. This fusion band is masterminded by singer-songwriter, guitarist and producer Rench, features banjo playing by Dan “Danjo” Whitener, fiddle playing by Brian “B” Farrow, and lyrical prowess from two MCs, R-Son and Dolio The Sleuth. On the eve of their new single release “Ain’t No Crime,” and a month ahead of their new album, “No Time For Enemies, I spoke at length with B Farrow, R-Son and Dolio to discuss the way their formula for tackling this fabled combination of style and substance can, and should, be taken seriously, perhaps now more than ever. My name is Manny Faces. This is my conversation with Gangstagrass. Support this podcast

Dean Radcliffe has been web developing since the table tag was the new hotness. His interests include his wife and two kids, music, sports, and he likes to say he helps people make whatever they can dream of. Since starting to move towards the frontend, React has been his weapon of choice, which he got started with in 2014. Dean works at G2.com, a software review site. They are developing a review form, which requires the code to react to events. For example, a person’s position in the company would affect what questions they see, so the form needs to react to which box is checked. Dean talks about the use cases for building a reactive form and what kind of things are going to happen when you fill in an input. For his form, the input will be remembered, and they want to increase the user’s involvement with the form through incentives. To accomplish this, Dean uses component driven development with Storybook. Storybook is a tool available for React and other frameworks, which lets you jump directly to each state you want to view instead of having to go through them all one by one. Basically, it gives you shortcuts directly to the visual states of your components. These states facilitate development and the feedback cycle going back to the designers, allowing them to see more than just the finished application and enabling them to circumvent mistakes. Storybook relates to reactive programming because component driven development lets you discover the API and what sets of props are necessary to put this component into each possible state that can be displayed. Dean does not use it as a test environment on his team, but it does help them write unit tests. It has an addon that lets you write unit tests in Storybook, but he hasn’t used it. Dean compares where reactivity and Storybook come together by comparing it to a thermometer.A thermometer will get readings over time of discrete values, and that timing is how people experience your components. You can create an observable of those states, and Storybook Animate ties them together. Your components, however, are still your responsibility. Dean talks about how he creates the observables. The observables are hardcoded, but the great thing is you don’t need to know where it came from. Dean describes how the observables are connected to the components. Dean feels that having this dynamic feed cycle makes it kind of fun to write tests. There is also a function called After which creates a set time out, which creates an observable of that value over time. Dean talks about his other tool, RX Helper. RX Helper provides an ‘after’ abstraction, and an event oriented layer in React. RX helper allows you to listen for custom events raised from the individual components of a form, and you respond to those events with observables, and the observables produce values over time. The goal of RX Helper provides some transparency and makes it easier to try out concurrency designs. The show concludes with Dean talking about some of the changes he’s made to his tools and how he came up with the idea. For Episode 32 of the Dark Horse Podcast, genre-bending and barrier-breaking band Gangstagrass sit down with Dani Zoldan to break down what it means to create a genre from scratch. Responsible for the Emmy-nominated theme from Justified, the band brings together the essential beat of hip-hop with the natural melody of bluegrass riffs. They share stories about getting scoffed at when first suggesting rapping to a steel guitar beat and what it was like to get bluegrass performers to move with the beat during live shows. Tune in to hear Dani, Chloe, and Dan Greenwald learn that even though country music in New York City seems like a "needle in a haystack situation", there's a lot more genuine interest in the genre.

After a prolonged hiatus, we are back to our normal operating day. Pardon our dust, mind the gap, thank you for your patience, and all of that. Things that are discussed in this episode: First and foremost, we have the phenomenal actor Justin Welborn, showcasing a range from the comically absurd to white hot tension with serious gravitas. You may remember Welborn from recent turns in JUSTIFIED on FX, or in the genre films SIREN and V/H/S VIRAL (two films that share DNA with today's episode.) Before we entered into the ought-teens, the cinematic cultural landscape was rich with two different breeds of films. Teen comedies and Zombie films. While many have attempted to traverse the borders of the venn diagram to a shared space between "zombie," "teen film," and "good;" and there have been a lot of misfires where they were missing at least one of the three trifecta. However, DANCE OF THE DEAD (2008) managed to hit a bullseye and really stick the landing. A hilarious film that serves to both parody and honor films ranging from THE BREAKFAST CLUB to NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD. Justin Welborn and company are high school seniors dealing with a zombie outbreak on prom night. Following that, Justin Welborn takes on hordes of a different kind. While the Nighthawks use the term "zombie film" when discussing THE SIGNAL (2007), a general "horde" label is probably more apropos. A strange signal is sent out through all of electronic media, causing anyone who witnesses it to slowly and violently lose grip on reality. In the midst of the general confusion and chaos, a long simmering love-triangle boils over in the wake of the sanity-shattering signal. Our commentary for this week's brand new show focused on the latest Michael Dunn trial updates (regarding the completely unjustified killing of teenager Jordan Davis in Florida), our commentary on the 2014 Grammys, the recent supremely cold weather snap here in the U.S., legendary Hip-Hop group De La Soul offering their entire catalog for free download for 1 day and some other things here & there. There is a brand new Black Agenda Report news mini-segment on this week's episode. Feel free to check out some recent episodes of the syndicated FuseBox Radio Broadcast over at our official blog, BlackRadioIsBack.com - all of the shows are clean/radio friendly. Pinball Sessions are live, off the floor, pressure free recordings by some of Canada and the World's best artists. Recorded in Guelph, ON at the Pinball Studios, full sessions are released twice a week and can be found on http://pinballsessions.com. The Pinball Sessions Podcast offers up some of our favourite tracks as well as session room banter, interviews and other goodies unavailable on the Pinball Sessions website. For a 'behind the scenes' look at the making of a session, quirky questions asked to artists, and one of a kind moments be sure to keep an eye on the Pinball Sessions Podcast. THIS EPISODE: We get down and dirty with two hardcore roots artists: Gangstagrass and Christopher Paul Stelling. Gangstagrass blend hip-hop and traditional bluegrass, sometimes called 'Jay-Z meets Ralph Stanley.' Their track 'Long Hard Times To Come' is the theme song for the FX drama Justified and they recorded a session for us at Folk Alliance 2013. Definitely not your grandma's bluegrass as they perform their track 'Gunslingin' Rambler.' We then hear a short banter from of our next artist, Christopher Paul Stelling, as he prepares to record. Christopher Paul Stelling is a songwriter based in New York City who has toured the world playing his fiercely powerful songs, singing in a strong and weathered voice. His song Solar Flares was also performed at Folk Alliance this past year, just prior to the release of his new album and a European tour. CPS just doesn't stop moving. Both full sessions can be found at http://pinballsessions.com Gangstagrass: http://pinballsessions.com/2013/06/20/gangstagrass/ Christopher Paul Stelling: http://pinballsessions.com/2013/08/05/christopher-paul-stelling/ Gangstagrass Online: Web: http://www.gangstagrass.com Twitter: http://twitter.com/gangstagrass Facebook: http://facebook.com/gangstagrass Christopher Paul Stelling Online: Web: http://christopherpaulstelling.wordpress.com/ Bandcamp: http://christopherpaulstelling.bandcamp.com/ Instagram: http://instagram.com/c_p_stelling Fine Pinball Sessions Online: Web: http://pinballsessions.com/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/PinballSessions/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/pinballsessions Instagram: http://instagram.com/pinballsessions/ Google+: https://plus.google.com/109652065469078482120/posts If you enjoy the Pinball Sessions Podcast we appreciate giving us a review and rating on iTunes. Hip hop? Bluegrass? The two genres might not be as different as you think, which Paul and AJ learn this week by talkng to Gangstagrass mastermind Rench. Rench discusses his attempt to bridge the gap and of how the fusion came about. Along the way, there's talk of Whedon, Axe Cop, and of course, Justified. Plus, AJ raves about Enlightened, Paul chats about the new comic Helheim, and there's more (yes, really!) Americans talk. Next: the boys are joined by Jason Tabrys of The BastardCast.
The Oscars were over a week ago, you say? Who cares, when we're joined by Kenn Edwards, host of the podcasts So Let's Get to the Point and Project Batman? In addition to Hollywood's big night, Paul, AJ, and Kenn discuss Kenn's forthcoming podcast ventures, the unimportant death of an important Batman character, and whether or not The Office is worth watching in its final season. Next: the boys are joined by Rench of Gangstagrass.

The season three finale of Justified, “Slaughterhouse”! Some of you thought it was brilliant, some of you liked it, some of you were disappointed, but it happened, and now we need to talk about it, and where it leaves us for seasons to come. We talk about our reactions, the recap, what Yost says is coming down the pike, and lots of your feedback. Hopefully we’ll have one more retrospective with a special guest, but if not, see you next season! As always, if you like what we do, give us a shout out! You can email, Tweet, or Facebook us.
