We are happy to welcome our fellow Pantheon Podcast brother Jon Verno, host of Metal Mayhem ROC, to share his first EVER concert at the age of 13 - Ted Nugent live in Rochester, 1980. Hear Jon share what it was like as a brand new teenager to witness the sights, sounds and smells of his first ever live show and how it made an impression that has lasted to this day. Verno has seen hundreds, if not thousands, of shows over the years but you never forget your first. Nor do you forget the first time the lights come up and you see Ted Nugent in full force. You never forget the first time you inhaled the smell of pot wafting through the crowd. You always remember how cool the lights were, directing your attention to different parts of the stage. Dropped off by his older brother with a friend his age, he almost didn't make it to the show as a frisbee landed next to him which he immediately threw into the head of a biker. Also, Verno and his pal had no idea what an encore was so they were walking out when they heard the crowd cheering. Upon return they found Terrible Ted swinging like Tarzan around the stage, one of his signature 70s stage acts. As Verno was familiar with Ted's live album Great Gonzos, the setlist ripped into his favorites and left him desperate for more. These stories of innocence which turn to experience with the backdrop of a killer rock concert is exactly what we do on First Concert Memories, the monthly sidecast from your friends at The Ugly American Werewolf in London Rock Podcast. Today's guest on the Expat Money Show is Jonathan Lockwood, a pro voice over talent originally from Detroit and currently living in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. He now spends his spare time venturing deep into the Mexican countryside and finding amazing artisanal mezcal. I enjoyed getting to know Jonathan and you are going to learn a ton from this conversation. TODAY'S CONVERSATION WITH JONATHAN: Listen in to hear Jon share the story of how he grew up in an apocalyptic religious cult and how he “woke up” from the brainwashing, which helped him to see that things are not always as they seem. Jon describes how foreseeing the forthcoming fiscal nightmare in the United States led him to explore other options outside of his home country. Hear Jon describe the striking similarities with how politics created divisiveness in families over the last several years to his own experience rejecting the beliefs his family had raised him to hold. We dig into our shared belief that it's important not to condemn others for being behind where you are at any given moment in life. Then we discuss how Jon wound up choosing San Miguel de Allende, Mexico as his home, where he now lives with his wife and their daughter. Learn what Jon views as the surprising advantage of living in a country with an extremely inefficient government. Jon relays a hilarious experience he had when he first attempted to speak Spanish upon arriving in Mexico - he had me stitches! We discuss the concept of “stacking freedom” as opposed to trying to find a “Shangri-La”, and how not to become paralyzed by the fear of making the wrong decision. Jon goes into detail describing the “melting pot” city of San Miguel de Allende, and how the locals have responded to the always-growing expat community there. You'll be wanting to book your trip to San Miguel after hearing this! Then we discuss how Jonathan developed a passion for artisanal Mezcal that he sources from “the Disneyland of Mezcal” in Oaxaca, Mexico. I learned so much about Mezcal that I never knew before! Jon Vroman is a husband, father and the Founder of Front Row Dads — a brotherhood created for “family men with businesses, not businessmen with families.” Over the last 5 years, Front Row Dads has become a diverse group of 230+ dads from 12 different countries who share a common bond of choosing to put family first as they grow their businesses. The mission of Front Row Dads is to help men deepen their connection with their children and build a family legacy that they're proud of. I'm talking with Jon today, because he's got a ton of insight to share around what it takes to become a better husband and father. Not only can he speak from his own experiences, but he's surrounded himself with like minded men who are constantly pushing to uplevel their Dad game. What I love about Jon is that he doesn't claim to have all the answers… In fact, quite the opposite. He started the group because he wanted to uncover them. And he's just as committed to learning as the rest of the men in his group. He knows the power of collective wisdom and has built a brotherhood who are committed to figuring it out together and learning from each other's experiences. Key Takeaways with Jon Vroman Starting Front Row Dads to win at home, not just at work. Establishing boundaries and protecting your calendar, so you have more time to spend on your family. One of the toughest decisions Jon made in order to become a better Dad. When you've got kids, how do you keep the intimacy alive with your spouse? Reconciling differences between you and your partner. How much family time is too much? Are you a bad Dad if you don't want to play with your kids for hours on end. Hear Jon's advice! Why boredom is so important to your kids' development. Time for your kids, time for your wife, and time for yourself… How do you balance it all? Why trying to ‘feel better' is a band-aid fix. How do you build a £20m recruitment business? It starts by hiring, retaining and developing good people, of course. But the glue that holds everything together, and lifts the business from good to great, is company culture. In this interview, Jonathan Keen shared how he creates a high-performance culture while promoting a healthy home-work balance. Jon revealed so many fantastic insights for recruitment leaders, from providing extra holidays, fostering a safe space for people to share their true thoughts and feelings, to adopting a qualitative approach to management. Jon is the CEO of Cognitive Group, a company he founded in 2007 at the age of just 25. Since then, he built Cognitive into a £20m business with a team of 21 and offices in the UK and Germany. Cognitive is a Microsoft talent expert and has placed over 2000 professionals into Microsoft projects on both a permanent and interim basis, building leadership teams and supporting digital transformations. Episode Outline and Highlights [1:15] Moving from South Africa to the UK with £1,200 in savings, aged 20 with no degree or experience. Hear Jon's astonishing story. [6:30] On handling objections - how training at a young age impacted Jon's career. [8:54] Challenges when starting - Jon shared key learnings on nearly losing the business in the early years because of cash flow. [14:00] Mental health awareness: Jon shared his valuable takeaways from depression and what we can learn from his journey. [28:00] Massive jump in productivity - Jon revealed the positive effects of providing extra-long weekends to their employees. [34:49] How to uncover your team's motivations and bring the best out of them. [47:58] Optimistically looking forward to the succeeding years after the pandemic - what is next for Cognitive Group. Starting Was Not Easy - Jon's Journey Jon moved from South Africa to the UK at age 20 - with £1,200 in savings, no degree, or experience. A friend referred him to join the recruitment industry and the rest was history. After five years, at age of 25, he launched Cognitive and eventually built the company to around £20m. It was easier said than done though, and like all successful business owners, he also had to go through some difficulties and challenges which can be a foundation for valuable learnings. Jon shared how he almost lost his business in the early years because of cash flow. He offered an honest and realistic perspective on the stress of running a successful business and how it can affect our physical and mental well-being. Jon also did not hesitate to share his key learnings: never risk everything and beware of being complacent in client relationships. Mental Health Awareness, Work-Life Balance, and Building a High Performance Culture As we went along in our conversation, one of the main topics we discussed is being aware of your mental health - why it is important to both personal and professional aspects of your life. I really admired Jon's transparency and courage when he shared how he dealt with depression. For sure, we can learn a lot from his journey. I had to ask Jon, how is he able to build a high-performance culture while protecting his team from burnout? He shared very insightful approaches on how he handles work-life balance for his employees. The gist of it, in Jon's words, is “bringing your physical and mental health to the top of your priority list.” He shared two practices that you may want to consider if you have a recruitment business: Providing extra holidays: Every 2nd Friday in Cognitive is a free holiday which translates to 25 extra long weekends on top of the usual holiday entitlement. Being a qualitative rather than a quantitative leader. Hear how these approaches actually resulted in a massive increase in their productivity. Bringing the Best Out of Your Team Another interesting thought that Jon mentioned is uncovering your team's motivation and bringing the best out of them. It is no question that if we know our team's motivations, we can help them to achieve their goals. So what is Jon's approach to knowing his team's motivation? Jon said leaders must “show that your intention is to genuinely help them. When someone can feel that they're in a safe environment to speak openly, that the answer that they might utter isn't quite the answer between a sales leader and salesperson. It can be “Actually I'm not sure whether this is right for me,” and you can genuinely say ‘let's talk about it'.” Very well said indeed. Jon further elaborated by sharing two takeaways: Celebrating successes via personalized praise Fostering an environment where people share things Jonathan Keen Bio and Contact Info Jon is the Founder and CEO of Cognitive Group - a team of experts in Microsoft talent and staffing specialists across Azure, D365, Power Platform, Data, Analytics and AI. For our thirteenth episode, Jon breaks a rule by bringing a recent album to the table - Dan Bern's 2019 album Regent Street. Over the course of an hour, we discuss: Jon's recent cross-promotional apperance on Pick A Disc with Matthew Latham, in which they discussed a different Dan Bern album. Today Jason and Jim are coming to you from Chicago, the “Windy City!” They are there because they’re chatting with Jon Baklund, a veteran tool and die maker who started in the manufacturing industry when he was 19. His father still works in the shop daily, and his wife works in the business as well - so it’s a true “family” business. His business, Baklund R & D is heavily involved in #d printing, which is a very intriguing new aspect of the manufacturing industry. 3D printing is a newer technology that is truly going to be a game-changer in the manufacturing industry. It’s one of those things that old-school folks may feel an urge to resist but our advice is to jump on board the train because it’s going to be moving out! Jon Baklund has one 3D printer in his shop, an environmentally controlled device that allows him to make virtually any shape part with any interior shape imaginable. He says you have to “think from the inside-out” when it comes to 3D printing, and we agree. 3D printing machines on the scale Jon uses are pretty pricey - his machine cost his company right around $160,000.00. But he says it’s well worth it. The specialty niche it has enabled him to carve out for himself has been a huge benefit to the company and when others begin to get on board the “3D printing train” he will be one of the veterans in the space. We wrap up this episode with two “off topic” pieces that should give you some great value. Click here to download this Unqualified Gamers Podcast episode Show Notes: * Jon’s Comcast nightmare story, referencing a Comcast nightmare cancellation story * Google Fiber is coming to 4 new markets * Cody explains his feelings about the Star Wars Holiday Special * Cody explains why he re-joined Battle.net, and what he plans do to about it * Thanks to listener Ryan D. for noting all of our profanity, and shout-out about his next project * We answer listener questions from our Google+ page (posts taken verbatim, not edited): * Michael Acuna: On games being shipped half baked. Would you rather have a game that is buggy and is patched after release like Halo MCC, Assassin’s Creed or deal with delay after delay like with The Witcher and The Division? * MS just announced Xbox One, PC cross-platform play with Fable Legends and Sony will have it with Planteside 2 and Street Fighter 5. Thoughts and options on cross-platform play, is it something you want to see more of? And of course do you think the PC has the “unfair” advantage of keyboard and mouse? * And lastly a fun topic, game(s) you love but everyone you talk to hated (^o^) * Donovan Jokers485: What is your opinion on the new Battlefield Hardline? Is it innovative with the cops vs crims theme or should they have just stuck with the standard military theme? * Christopher Long: Have you ever turned down sex to play video games? * VintageGamer Pvt. Lee- Brown: actually i would like to know you twos favorite Video Game for every (most) genres [RPG, ACTION, FPS, STRATEGY, ETC] * Scott Parks: The king of random right here haha. Hey, I heard that Microsoft was trying to do cross platform online gaming to PC with windows 10. I’d kinda like to hear what others think of that myself. If it would work across other consoles that be great. With 3rd party games of course but it sounds like a great start to end the fan boy war haha. “PC master race” shit haha. * Jamie Butterworth: Glad to see you posting! Unfortunately I don’t have anything constructive to add right now, or any topics that are burning in my brain or else I’d offer to join. I think the only thing really bothering me is my sudden disdain for crowdfunding. Also, as an aside, I have been sharing your videos over on the G@L blog each week since you’re a member of this network
Subscribe (iTunes)Subscribe (Stitcher) We learn about learning, as we discuss game literacy, broken games and the world of theatre Built to Play learns about learning in our 50th episode. We don't know how we did it, except through willful ignorance of the heavenly signs and our friends and family. At this rate, Built to Play will never die, although we offer no guarantees. People often forget about game literacy, like this article did in the previous paragraph. Once you know how to read or write, the expectation is that's the norm. How quickly we forget that near 100 per cent literacy is a recent phenomenon, and only then became fundamental part of our societies. When we run into people who are lacking these skills it can be shocking, and the first arrogant impulse is to blame it on their own lack of interest. It's equally surprising when we see someone who's never used an Xbox controller, or is intimidated by the sheer number of keys on a keyboard. Even between cultures, there's been some confusion. Just as the Japanese read right to left, for them bottom-most face button means cancel, while in North America it means accept. While not entirely detrimental, it's worth noting that even experienced players run into the limits of their literacy, if only to justify why some of us had such a hard time playing Japanese RPGs. As games and technology become a bigger part of how we express ourselves, it's important to remember that not everyone grew up with a Super Nintendo, and the annual blockbusters, which focus on action and destruction, aren't universally appealing to all people. Some people aren't literate in games not because games aren't suited to them or because they aren't interested in them, but because games can be scary. They're active experiences, and so they need some level of introduction. Without that, games are just graphics on a screen and a gamepad filled with 10 plus buttons which could feasibly do anything. So this time, we're talking about game literacy with Sagan Yee and her Game Curious program, before discussing ways games can approach more people through performance. Then Jon Remedios tells us about his learning process in designing his own game. Here are our show notes: Sagan Yee tells us about the Game Curious program she ran in the Toronto Reference Library, plans for the future, and why games are stigmatised. Special thanks to Al Donato, Cheryl Clarke, Amelia Nelson, and Amala Johnson. This segment starts 0:40 into the show. Then in the news, we discuss the end of the G4 television channel, thehacking of the 3DS, and why Assassin's Creed Unity, Halo Master Chief Collection, and DriveClub are so glitched out messes. **The news kicks in at 12:50. ** Deirdre "Squinky" Kiai tells us about Coffee: A Misunderstanding, which merges the mediums of game and performance closer than ever before. Hear Squinky explain who's the player when humans are both the instigators and the avatars around 34:00. Jon Remediosexplains the progress he's made on his local multiplayer party game, theShoot Shoot Mega Pack, and how he's changed his process over the last four months. We talked to him back at Gamercamp in October, and before that in May at the Bit Bazaar. Hear Jon discuss his work-life balance and the future of local multiplayer at 42:55. Game Curious on October 18 Game Curious continues every Saturday at the Toronto Reference Library until December 2. Thanks to the Free Music Archive for the following music.
