In the final installment of Colby’s anniversary series, Jeff and Lord Chandler sit down with local brewing legends Ryan Brooks, founder/brewmaster of SouthNorte Beer Co., and Jim Millea, head brewer at OB Brewery. These local brewing legends chat about the early homebrewing days that brought them together, their love of Baja, and share a story of the day how they almost died for beer... we’re not joking. Both Ryan and Jim talk about their connection to brewing in Mexico and discuss “business-as-unusual" in the days of COVID-19. Ryan Brooks: Ryan Brooks is the founder/brewmaster of SouthNorte Beer Co. He’s an internationally recognized beer judge and certified Cicerone. Brooks, formerly a touring metal drummer and award-winning homebrewer, worked at Malt Shovel Brewing Co. (Australia) and Black Market Brewing (Temecula) before starting at Coronado Brewing Co. in 2012. Eventually he worked his way up to brewmaster at Coronado. Under Brooks' leadership, Coronado won the extremely prestigious 2014 World Beer Cup Champion Mid-Size Brewery award. In 2017 Brooks founded SouthNorte at crossroads of Tijuana and San Diego bridging flavors of Mexico the San Diego craft. Jim Millea: Jim Millea is Head Brewer at OB Brewery in San Diego, CA and co-owner and brewer at Cerveceria El Destino in Valle de Guadelupe, Baja California, Mexico. Jim has been brewing professionally since 2014 when he was hired as assistant brewer at O'Sullivan Brothers Brewing Company. Before this, Jim was an avid home brewer and completed internships at Benchmark Brewing Company and Ballast Point Brewing Company. During his homebrewing days, Jim became a recognized beer judge through the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP) run by local San Diego homebrew club QUAFF (Quality Ale and Fermentation Fraternity). In 2015, Jim graduated from UCSD's Professional Certificate in Brewing Program. Originally from Massachusetts, Jim has been living in San Diego since 2000 and in Ocean Beach since 2008 where he currently resides. Since helping to build-out and now run OB Brewery, Jim has received several awards for his beers including bronze medals for both the Elevator Red IPA and Rooftop Saison at the 2018 San Diego International Beer Festival. At the Great American Beer Festival (GABF), Jim received a silver medal in 2017 for the Hidden Gem Dunkelweizen and a gold medal in 2018 for the B.Right.On Pale Ale. The 2018 gold medal win at GABF also scored Jim and OB Brewery the Small Brewpub Brewery and Small Brewpub Brewery of the year award. Jim hopes to continue making great beer in OB and is looking forward to making beer at the new venture in Baja that is now only in its very beginning stages.

We have another special episode for you, which we taped at Eppig Brewing’s Waterfront Biergarten in Point Loma (if you haven’t been here yet, you have to check it out!) We’re celebrating the huge collaboration we did with three local craft breweries to make three special-edition beers to coincide with our Best Of San Diego issue. From Eppig Brewing, there’s the Best of San Diego hoppy pilsner; Fall Brewing Company crafted a Best of San Diego kettle sour, and Coronado Brewing Co. created a Best of San Diego IPA. You can sample our collaborative beers at each brewery, and at our Best of San Diego party on August 16. This week's special guests are Clayton LeBlanc, co-founder and one of the head brewers at Eppig Brewing, and Erin Meanley Glenny, Editor-in-Chief of San Diego Magazine. They gave us a behind-the-scenes look into how the special beer collaboration came to life, how long it took and how timing was everything (since freshness is crucial for beer). Clayton’s pick for Two People, $50 was Tobeys 19th Hole Restaurant in Balboa Park. Erin recommends the happy hour at Nine-Ten in La Jolla (they have $5 wines!), Troy liked Eve in Encinitas, and Lauren went to The Rose wine bar in South Park. In Hot Plates, My Yard Live just opened in San Marcos—it’s a huge public and entertainment space for people of all ages: it has a playground for kids, a brewery, bar and restaurant, and games like bocce ball and shuffleboard. Fort Oak started a new chef’s counter experience with just 14 seats that has a six-course tasting menu for $100 (wine pairings cost an additional $40). The cross-country touring Uncorked Wine Fest is coming to Del Mar this Saturday, July 27. Enjoy over 150 wines from across the globe, watch the races, then stay for a concert by the country band Midland. Carruth Cellars—a tasting room in Little Italy with an adorable patio—is now serving pizza. This week’s Hot Topic is about CVT Soft Serve, a popular ice cream truck in Los Angeles, which has been making headlines because the owner is absolutely fed up with influencers asking him for free ice cream, so he’s charging them double the price for even asking. The Best of San Diego Party is just around the corner! Taste samples from more than 80 restaurants at the most delicious evening of the year. It’s on August 16 at Liberty Station. This event sells out every year, so don't wait to get your tickets. Insiders get a special discount on tickets and front of the line entry. As always, we want to hear from you! Call us at 619-744-0535 and leave a message. Or if you’re too shy to call, you can email HappyHalfHour@sdmag.com. You can give us your recommendations for Two People, $50, tell us about any news happening in San Diego’s culinary world, or let us know who you’d like to hear featured as a guest on the podcast.
What doesn't kill you... How will our team respond after a close loss against the Cowboys? We do a bit of venting but we also make sure to look at the silver linings. An opportunity for redemption awaits us vs the Bucs, can we get back on track? We discuss that, make our weekly picks and ask "Are we finally seeing a Craft Beer Saturation in SD?" Cheers!!!

In EP44 we thank the hockey gods this is the last Podcast we have to do before the Dec 1 deadline. Then we create our own defensive pairings given the current players on the roster. Liquor Planet gave us a Guava Islander Tropical IPA from Coronado Brewing Co in Coronado, California.
Here’s a hypothetical question: What if we were to tell you that one could start a food company and in less than five years sell it for $600 million? Would that be something you’d be interested in? (That was a rhetorical question.) As unlikely as it sounds, that’s exactly what happened to Peter Rahal, the co-founder and CEO of RXBAR. Launched in 2013, RXBAR, which markets clean label protein bars, quickly became one of the fastest growing snack brands in the U.S. The company had net sales of approximately $120 million in 2017 and in October was acquired by the Kellogg Company for the aforementioned $600 million. We recently sat down with Rahal to discuss the incredible growth of RXBAR, including the decision that sparked a major turning point for the brand, and how being “miserably uncomfortable for the past five years” has helped him grow as a leader. Here’s another hypothetical question: what if you could buy a countertop appliance that would enable you to make RXBARs at home? How about one that could make your favorite style of beer? Well, you’re in luck! That’s if you want the magic beer machine, not the protein bar one; that doesn’t exist…. yet. Founded in 2010, PicoBrew is a fast-growing maker of automatic brewing appliances designed for small craft beer producers and homebrewers. Co-founder and CEO Bill Mitchell joined us for an interview about how the appliances are disrupting the beer industry’s traditional three-tier system, the company’s long-term vision is and how he expects it to evolve and expand into other beverage categories. Now, how about a snack with that homebrewed beverage? Consider AvoLuv, a new brand of chips made from avocados. Founder and CEO Eric Healy spoke with us about the development and business strategy behind AvoLuv and what he’s looking for from investors -- all included in the latest edition of Elevator Talk. Show notes: 2:35: Trendspotting In South America -- Project NOSH editor Carol Ortenberg recently returned from a trip to Chile and Argentina and shared her thoughts on food culture, interesting ingredients, and novel brands in the two countries. The hosts also chat about recent visits to BevNET HQ from the founders of Ruby Rockets and Nitro Beverage Co. and encourage other brand owners to make a trip to see us. 9:58: Interview: Peter Rahal, Co-Founder/CEO, RXBAR -- Six months after the sale of RXBAR, Peter Rahal spoke with Project NOSH editor Carol Ortenberg about the launch and rapid development of the company. Among topics of discussion: how Rahal, a self-described introvert, was forced into uncomfortable situations that eventually made him a better leader; how the brand’s revamp was a “leap of faith” and why Rahal believed that the company “couldn’t play the same game, from a design perspective, as everyone else,” and “needed to take a risk.” 39:13: Interview: Bill Mitchell, Co-Founder/CEO, PicoBrew -- In its eight years on the market, PicoBrew has has attracted significant interest from consumers, professional brewers and investors, having raised $20 million from 50 funding partners, including Zx Ventures, the global incubation arm of Anheuser-Busch InBev. Mitchell sat down with Brewbound editor Chris Furnari and discussed the company’s origins and business strategy, including how it plans to disrupt the market for hyperlocal craft beer. 1:04:39: Elevator Talk: Eric Healy, Founder/CEO, AvoLuv -- We met Eric Healy at Natural Products Expo West 2018, where the founder and CEO spoke with us about his avocado-based snack brand AvoLuv and the innovation behind its unique products. Brands in this episode: The Not Company, RxBar, Coronado Brewing Co., Rogue Ales, Avoluv
Once we wrapped up our BierBuzz® video show filming we had to get Head Brewer Ryan Brooks on the show. On this episode we get his recipe on their Saison and talk about the style. Sit back, relax, and make sure to have a saison ready.
