Ready to learn the history, philosophy, and practice of an experienced professional in the test prep industry? MEET OUR GUEST Meet Kate Fisher, who grew up in Englewood, NJ, and graduated cum laude from Horace Mann School, where she remains an active part of the community and is a member of the Alumni Council. Private tutoring is not Kate's side hustle; rather, she deliberately chose to pursue it as a full-time career because she loves teaching and values cultivating genuine and impactful relationships with her students and their families beyond the boundaries so often required by traditional academic and classroom environments. Kate is an energetic and patient tutor (and cheerleader!) who is able to quickly and effectively accommodate her students' needs. Her tutoring is creative and adaptive, providing her students with the support and skills they need to achieve their goals. Kate has worked with thousands of students during her career as a full-time tutor, which she began as an undergraduate in 2008. As a part-time teacher at Kaplan Test Prep, she taught ACT, SAT, and SHSAT in both in-person and online classrooms. By 2010, Kate expanded her tutoring repertoire to include both the ISEE and SSAT, as well as various AP exams, SAT Subject Tests, and high school and college admissions consulting. She spent 2013 as a full-time instructor, teaching classes and tutoring students throughout the tristate area. In addition to training part-time tutors and developing teaching materials, Kate taught and tutored low-income students through her involvement in partnerships with the NYC Department of Education. In 2014, Kate was promoted to manager of content and curriculum, spearheading product and course revisions for the 2015 PSAT and 2016 SAT test changes. After returning to tutoring full-time, Kate joined an elite, boutique firm in 2016 and quickly became one of their most requested tutors. From 2020 to 2022, Kate joined the company full-time and was not only the top-grossing tutor but also served as Director of School Partnerships and trained other tutors to work with neurodiverse students. Kate also singlehandedly wrote the company's e-book on Executive Function during this period.  Kate is well positioned to help students with a wide variety of learning differences. In addition to her extensive experience as a tutor, she is a lifelong activist for the Autism community, and has been volunteering with children and adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder since her childhood. Kate holds a Professional Certificate in Learning Differences (LD) and Neurodiversity with a Specialization in Executive Function through the Landmark College Institute for Research & Training. In early 2023, Kate recruited an elite team of like minded tutors and founded Kate Fisher Tutoring (KFT) because she believes that one-on-one tutoring can transform students' lives and their relationships with learning. KFT focuses on effectively connecting families to top private educators who help their children efficiently meet—and exceed—their goals. KFT prides itself on organic growth generated through word-of-mouth referrals based on the success of the work Kate and her team do whether EF coaching, test prep, or academic support and enrichment. In this podcast episode, Dr. Natalie Lancer hosts a discussion on the role of coach development, self-awareness and the concept of self in coaching. Dr. Julia Carden presents her research on self-awareness, distinguishing it from self-knowledge and self-consciousness. Heather Frost explores the concept of self, drawing on her doctoral research looking at 25 belief systems, highlighting its complexity and the practical impact of understanding a client's concept of self. Dr Elizabeth Crosse details the three developmental strategies that emerged through her doctoral research: the craft, the being and the art of coaching. We examine: •     Why is self-awareness important for coaches? •     What is the difference between self-awareness and the concept of self? •     How are self-awareness, self-knowledge, and self-consciousness linked? •     What are the challenges involved in demonstrating competency vs capacity development? •     How can we utilise the coach's and coachee's self-awareness in coaching practice? •     What do clients' beliefs about self mean for how coaches tailor their coaching? •     How can the three underpinnings of concept of self: stability vs instability, thoughts of self as a unique expression of me vs the self as an illusion, and unity versus multiplicity, be used to generate a concept of self scale? •     How does understanding the concept of self increase the coach's self awareness of beliefs and bias? And how can this benefit coaching outcomes? •     What is the difference between Continuous Personal and Professional Development (CPPD) and Continuous Professional Development (CPD)? •     Why is it more helpful to think of coach development as a learning journey than a linear progression? •     How do we know what coaching development opportunities to invest in? •     What are some practical ways to develop self-awareness? Self-awareness enables coaches to forge deeper connections with clients and furthermore, it seems we can only take clients as far as we have gone ourselves. We discussed how a focus on preparing the self rather than content, allows coaches to trust their abilities and concentrate on other aspects of their practice. As we wrapped up the episode, the guests shared how engaging and reflecting in formal and informal professional and personal experiences have influenced their development. Our guests today are: Dr Julia Carden is an accredited Master Practitioner Coach with the EMCC, a Professional Certified Coach with the ICF, an accredited coaching supervisor and is a Visiting Tutor at Henley Business School.  Julia was an officer in the Royal Navy, and then specialised in assessment and development centre work, and Learning and Development.  She fundamentally believes that as coaches we must first, and continue to do, the work on self – because who we are is how we coach.  This approach is underpinned by her PhD research which explored the role of self-awareness in the development of the coach. She is a NLP Master Practitioner, an accredited Time to Think Coach, a Fellow of the CIPD, and is licensed to use a range of psychometrics.  Julia completed the Henley MSc in Executive Coaching and Behavioural Change in 2014.   Heather Frost is the Founder of People and Practice, Co-founder of Think Perspective, an accredited coach, Doctoral Researcher and Visiting Tutor at Henley Business School. She is a Henley accredited coach, an accredited Senior Practitioner with the European Coaching & Mentoring Council (EMCC Global), and an accredited Coach with the International Coaching Federation (ICF). Heather has over 20 years of global experience coaching individuals, teams, leaders, and organisations for systemic behaviour change and development. With an MSc in Coaching & Behaviour Change from Henley Business School (UK) and a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology (BPsych) with a minor in Philosophy from the University of Newcastle in Australia, she holds the Professional Certificate in Executive Coaching from Henley Business School (PCEC), and is also a Breakthrough Coaching Advanced Practitioner from WBECS (now coaching.com).  Dr Elizabeth Crosse is a Master Certified Coach (MCC) and works as a coach, mentor and supervisor. Her practice focuses on Continuous Professional and Personal Development.  This has evolved from over 30 years of involvement with the coaching profession and being a research practitioner interested in how coaches develop expertise. Elizabeth is passionate about lifelong learning. She has navigated dyslexia and dyspraxia to transition from an early career in education to becoming a senior HR professional specialising in people development before setting up her coaching-consultancy business, specialising in strategic leadership. Along the way, she became a fellow of the CIPD, a Master Credentialed Coach with the ICF (MCC) and completed a Diploma in Coaching Supervision. She achieved three Master's degrees (Education, Counselling Psychology and Coaching and Mentoring) and a Doctorate in Coaching and Mentoring.  Your host, Dr Natalie Lancer, is a Chartered Coaching Psychologist, and British Psychological Society (BPS) Registered Supervisor. She is the Chair of the BPS's Division of Coaching Psychology and an accredited member of the Association for Coaching. In this episode Dr Natalie Lancer explores and discusses with Stephanie Wheeler, David Love and Anna Sheather how a creative-based approach to coaching can support others. We consider how coaching can help people be more creative and what that means by asking: What does it mean for the coach to take a creative approach to their coaching? What are the benefits for the coachee of exploring and expanding their own creativity? Which creative techniques can we use to facilitate the generation of insights for coachees? How does a sense of playfulness enhance the coaching relationship? What does it mean to empower clients without censoring their creative explorations? How do we create a safe space in which clients can experiment? How can we own our creative voice as a coach and support others to do the same? What are the ways in which we can apply outcomes from creative coaching sessions to specific real-world situations? How might organisations benefit from a more creative coaching approach? How do we encourage clients to sustain and leverage their creative insights? Bringing a sense of playfulness and creativity to the coaching relationship and environment has attracted recent interest and research. Our panel of experts discuss how taking a creative approach benefits both individuals and organisations. Our guests today are: Stephanie Wheeler is an ICF accredited coach, working with executives, leaders and emerging leaders. Pete Peterson, Dean of Public Policy at Pepperdine University in California joins us this episode for a fascinating look at the education system in America. I had the pleasure of meeting Pete when I was in the US earlier this month and he kindly agreed to come on Hearts of Oak to discuss the battle that is currently taking place for the heart and soul of College Campuses across the US. A diversity of viewpoint is no longer accepted and students are now required to sign up to the latest prevailing victimhood status group, a difference of views and opinion is simply no longer tolerated. Pete's run for the position of Secretary of State in California gives him broad insight and knowledge on the attack of education in America and how best to respond. Pete Peterson is a leading national speaker and writer on issues related to civic participation, and the use of technology to make government more responsive and transparent. He was the first executive director of the bi-partisan organization, Common Sense California, which in 2010 joined with the Davenport Institute at the School of Public Policy to become the Davenport Institute for Public Engagement and Civic Leadership, he has also consulted on several of these projects with local governments, and has directly facilitated public meetings. He has co-created and currently co-facilitates the training seminar, "Public Engagement: The Vital Leadership Skill in Difficult Times" a program that has been attended by over 3,000 municipal officials, and he also co-created and co-facilitates the seminar, "Gov 2.0: What Public Officials Need to Know," which explores the ways in which technology is changing local government processes and he recently co-developed the new Professional Certificate, "Leading Smart Communities," with govtech practitioner Dr. Jonathan Reichental. In 2017, SPP launched a new initiative titled the "American Project: On the Future of Conservatism", which is co-directed by Dean Peterson and Rich Tafel. The "Project" is a unique effort to gather scholars and activists from a variety point on the conservative spectrum to deliberate over, write about, and discuss the future of the conservative movement. Pete writes widely on public engagement for a variety major news outlets including the Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times, and San Francisco Chronicle, as well as numerous blogs. He is a regular guest on the "Politics Roundtable" with host Larry Mantle on KPCC radio. He has also helped write several survey-based reports on the subject, including "Testing the Waters: California's Local Officials Experiment with New Ways to Engage the Public" (in collaboration with the League of California Cities), and the "California Civic Health Index" (in collaboration with the National Conference on Citizenship). He contributed the chapter, "Place as Pragmatic Policy" to the edited volume, Why Place Matters: Geography, Identity, and Civic Life in Modern America (New Atlantis Books, 2014), and the chapter "Do-It Ourselves Citizenship" in the volume, Localism in the Mass Age (Wipf & Stock, 2018). Pete has been a public affairs fellow at The Hoover Institution, and he serves on the Leadership Councils of the Public Policy Institute of California and California Forward, and on the boards of the Homeland Security Advisory Council and the Da Vinci Charter Schools and was the Republican candidate for California Secretary of State in 2014. In this week's episode, Master Coach Fiona Jacob blessed Wyn & Kate with her description of the essence of who we all are, how she wakes that up in others and her personal experience in seeing this for herself.  This deep and powerful conversation points to the truth of who we ALL are and how we work as human beings. Fiona wishes to wholeheartedly credit her teachers and mentors, Michael Neill, Barb Patterson and most recently, Rudy Kennard and Julianne Del Cano-Kennard (Wholalitytm) for taking her on a journey into and exploration of what it is to be whole, accept all of herself, and into the possibility of wholeness and aliveness for each of us.   Fee's Bio: Fiona Jacob is a Certified Master Transformative Coach and Supervisor who works with individuals, teams and organizations across the world. She holds a Masters in Coaching and Behaviour Change as well as a Professional Certificate in Supervision from Henley Business School and has a rather secret penchant for ‘stuffy' academic work. As a coach and coaching supervisor, Fiona is an uncompromising stand for people's greatness and wholeness. Her passion is waking people up to their true nature so they can live their most authentic life.  In her former life, Fiona was the Director of Nursing, leading major transformational change programs in hospitals across the Middle East. Originally from the beautiful Isle of Ireland, Fiona now lives in Sweden with her husband, Wilhelm, (who is very, very tall). In all of her time off, she plays at being a horse whisperer and loves blue water sailing.  PS I have no working website. Maybe someday I will get one! People just seem to find me… somehow
