As we chat with Sorrentino about brewing in San Diego and Europe, Maibock, Cashmere hops, and the insanity of moving to Austin in the Summer we drink through some of their lineup.  Contrary #beertwitter rumble lats week about there being nothing but IPAs at breweries, Original 40 runs the gamut with Pilsners, Rice Lagers, Smoked Brown Ales, super-thicc stouts, and yes, some NE and West Coast IPAs.  And they're all damn tasty. The debate over which is the best American beer city has raged from the earliest days of craft beer. Powerhouse names such as Portland (both Oregon and Maine), Asheville, Denver, Chicago, and others have each made convincing cases. And right there from the beginning has been San Diego, basking in its sunshine and style defining West Coast IPAs, and smiling knowingly at its competition. This week we have one of the most dialed in people following the San Diego beer scene. Beer writer and marketer Brandon Hernández has been deeply plugged into the southern California beer scene for more than a decade. He has helped direct marketing at some of the area's best known breweries, including Stone, Alesmith, and Societe. In 2019, the long-time writer decided to focus his efforts on creating a new interactive resource for fans of the area's beer scene with the founding of San Diego Beer News. The site is a bit of a throwback to the earlier days of beer blogs and local brewspapers. Instead of doing deep dives into broad, weighty topics of national import, Brandon focuses on providing detailed and tangible information about San Diego breweries and beer bars. SD Beer News offers brewery maps, tap lists, interviews with local brewers and beer players, and lots of local beer news. A native San Diegan, Brandon is one of the most informed sources you're going to find about that beer scene. And despite having worked for several local breweries and generally trying to promote San Diego beer, he's not afraid to express opinions and offer critical thoughts as he does throughout this interview. It's a refreshing break from so much retread that so often constitutes beer writing today. He also opens up in personal terms about some sensitive topics, including his own experience with sexual harassment at the hands of a local brewery owner. We also chat about the roller coaster that has been San Diego beer in recent years, touching on Ballast Point, Stone, Alpine Brewing, and the reckoning involving Modern Times and others. Here is my conversation with writer and San Diego beer ambassador Brandon Hernandez. For more information on the Beer Edge Podcast, follow us on Twitter @thebeeredge. Crafted Commentary - Cold Take Pure Project's 5 Year Anniversary Quintuple IPAOh boy, for this special Crafted Commentary Cold Take (mini-episodes devoted to the first try of a beer), we had Pure Project's Shadow Of The Moon.Info below straight from Pure themselves!https://www.purebrewing.org/story/For our 5th anniversary, we wanted to challenge ourselves as a craft brewery and push the limits of our fermentation skills. Coming in at 15% ABV, this murky quintuple IPA is the strongest beer we have ever brewed at Pure Project. Featuring our five favorite hops–Nelson Sauvin (Freestyle Hops, NZ), Strata (Indie Hops, OR), Mosaic (Loftus Ranches, WA), Citra (Wyckoff Farms, WA), and Cashmere (Gooding Farms, ID)–Shadow of the Moon is a true celebration of hops and the farmers who grew them. At 8 pounds of hops per barrel, this is easily the most heavily dry hopped beer we have made. The result? A subtly warming and stunningly smooth brew bursting with notes of ripe pineapple, honeydew, and a whole lot of dank. Cheers to five years!San Diego Beer, Craft Beer, SDBeer, CraftBeer, Best Craft Beer Podcast California

Cars, trucks, beers, guns!  It's the Garage Hour - go figure.  This week, we pried ourselves out of the garage to put together another one of our adventure episodes, sitting down for an hour of sipping and salacious talk with the folks from Helm's Brewing, most notably GM Matt Johnson.  There's a good chat about the business of craft/micro/up-and-coming brewing, and where San Diego's excellent beer scene stands in relation to the rest of the world's beer (definitely not on the bottom rung). We've also got a discussion of pros and cons to consider when picking up a .22-cal rifle for plinking duty, a visit with Osama bin Laden's reading list (lots of porn to go with his leftist and terrorist topics), and we briefly (far too briefly) visit with the pending epic fail that is state-mandated mileage taxes and what you can do to stop it (or how low-information fools let it happen).  Along with those goodies are rock/roll in the form of big-time weirdness from Mars Volta, stuff we're missing (Pixies annd The Smiths), and plane-Jane goodness like Primus, Ministry and the Stone Temple Pilot's kickoff, Core.   On-air for this one with Hostus Maximus Justin Fort and Matt from Helm's were .45 Phil, Chef Jeff, Rick McElroy, Kurtis from JBA Speed Shop and Majid from GSR.
