Her remarkable prowess on the bass guitar soon landed her a number of high-profile television gigs spanning America's Got Talent to backing up pop star Julia Michaels on TODAY. By the end of her senior year at NYU, Rykman's virtuoso talent and infectious spirit saw her invited to join pianist Marco Benevento's band (as recommended by Ween bassist Dave Dreiwitz), with whom she performed countless shows including dates with Vulfpeck, Dispatch, The Claypool Lennon Delirium, Guster, and many more. Rykman soon formed her own namesake band, accompanied by Adam November (guitar, loopers, effects) and Chris Corsico (drums). She quickly earned a reputation as a mesmerizing, unmissable live act, lighting up an array of international stages with headline sets, show-stealing festival performances (including Bonnaroo, Peach Music Festival, and Sweetwater 420 Fest), shows alongside Khruangbin, Guster, and The Disco Biscuits (among others), and recent appearances sitting in with the 8G Band on NBC's Late Night with Seth Meyers. That same spellbinding power was soon captured on a series of independent singles, including “Elevator” and the million-streaming “Plants,” both of which have now been newly enhanced for Rykman's debut album, JOYRIDE. Written and recorded with childhood friend, producer Gabe Monro, the album serves as a vivid canvas for Rykman's vibrant expression and chameleonic songcraft. JOYRIDE features Trey Anastasio as co-producer and featured musician, contributing guitar on five of the album's nine tracks. With an effervescent stage presence and rapturous, unbridled energy, Karina Rykman has amassed a dedicated following of passionate fans and earned a reputation as an unmissable live act. (In her own words, she plays bass, sings, jumps around and laughs a lot). Leading a power trio that includes guitarist Adam November and drummer Chris Corsico, Karina has headlined clubs across America, taken over major festivals including Bonnaroo, Sweetwater 420 Fest and The Peach Music Festival; and appeared on The Today Show and America's Got Talent. She even made several appearances as a guest player for the house band on Late Night with Seth Myers. A self-professed “punk rock metal kid,” the New York City native got her start playing in punk bands in the NY music scene before evolving into the sounds of indie pop and psychedelic jam rock that her fans know and love today. It was during her senior year at NYU when Rykman's talent and infectious spirit earned her an invitation to join pianist Marco Benevento's band (as recommended by Ween bassist Dave Dreiwitz), with whom she performed countless shows before fronting her own band. Now, Karina's debut album Joyride – produced by jam band legend Trey Anastasio of Phish – is available everywhere, featuring her trademark thick bass, ethereal synths, disco-funk guitar, and silky, dreamy vocals. Karina Rykman is currently on a headlining nationwide tour through the rest of the year in support of Joyride (her hometown NYC show quickly sold out). Speak with Karina about the evolution of her musical style, her influences and path to success, and what listeners can expect from her new album and live show.

This week on Comes A Time, Mike and Oteil are joined by bassist and singer Karina Rykman! The three discuss the genesis of her band and why she didn't fully consider herself to be a bassist until she started playing with Marco Benevento, what growing up and living in New York City means to her as a musician, and why she never got into drinking or other substances. Karina also tells the guys about how fellow bassist Dave Dreiwitz gave her the “greatest gift that anybody could give somebody,” and an incredible story about how her grandparents survived the Holocaust, starting a path that would eventually lead to a life of boundless creative freedom for Karina. Karina Rykman is a musician from New York City known for her high-energy bass playing with Marco Benevento. Karina joined Marco's band in 2016 to replace Dave Dreiwitz, and in the many tours since then, she has developed a permanent and powerful presence in the band. Her musical résumé has almost grown too large to keep track of, and includes a performance on the Today Show with Julia Michaels, a now-famous soundcheck at Madison Square Garden with Phish, opening for bands such as Khruangbin, Vulfpeck, and Dispatch, and many more memorable moments.
Live music is back, baby! Raf and Karina celebrate Madison Square Garden's Foo Fighters celebration, discuss Lotus' lineup shifts and (of course) talk plenty about Trey Anastasio and Phish. [Recorded June 21, 2021, Send your messages to RafandKarina@gmail.com]

Adding another facet to their Ween-centric offerings, God Ween Evan kicks off a periodic interview series, where someone in or around Ween and the Ween community chews the fat with the team. First up is Chris “Tomato” Harfenist, best known for being the lead singer and drummer for the alternative rock band Sound of Urchin. Tomato also plays drums in the Dean Ween fronted band The Moistboyz, as well as in Crescent Moon with Dave Dreiwitz. In this episode GWE’s Will Nunziata and Tomato discuss how Tomato got involved with Ween, the “golden ear” of A & R legend Steve Ralbovsky, when Tomato was “summoned by The D" (Tenacious D), Tomato playing live with Ween and The Moistboyz, and a must hear story that involved the Ween fan-favorite “Someday.” See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Dave Dreiwitz was born in NY to traditional jazz musician parents, Richard and Barbara Dreiwitz. His father plays trombone and his mother plays tuba. In 1983, at the age of seventeen, Dave joined the Hoboken, New Jersey based psych rock band Tiny Lights, his first professional band out of high school. In 1986, while attending Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey, he met fellow schoolmate and drummer Scott Byrne and through a love of similar music, they started the rock band Instant Death in 1991. Instant Death dissolved with the passing of Byrne in 2005. In 1997, Dave joined Ween. Dave also performs in The Marco Benevento Trio, Joe Russo's Almost Dead, The Dean Ween Group and the Led Zeppelin instrumental tribute band, Bustle in Your Hedgerow. He occasionally plays bass with Chris Harford and the Band of Changes, Old Rugged Sauce as well as in his own drum and bass duo, Crescent Moon, which features Dreiwitz on bass and vocals alongside various guest drummers. Crescent Moon drummers have included Claude Coleman of Ween, Tomato from the Sound of Urchin, Eric Slick of Dr. Dog and Joe Russo of Furthur.
Elliott Levin is one of the most accomplished musicians of avant-garde jazz still living in Germantown today. Levin is a prolific poet and a cutting-edge wind player who is best known for his work with Cecil Taylor, one of the most radically progressive jazz artists of the Twentieth Century. Today Elliott describes his journeys between different genres of music, from the time he spent studying with saxophone expert Mike Guerra (who taught John Coltrane), to his work in experimental rock, jazz and poetry, to his years on tour with Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes. He also discusses his favorite poets, as well as the energy that has always inspired him to write.Find Elliott Levin:elliottlevin.comfacebook.com/ElliottLevinJazzFeatured music:Elliott Levin & The Eye2Eye Trio."I'm Always Happy About Everything."YouTube, 2017. youtu.be/fPf0y2kPMo4.Robert Musso, Elliott Levin, Lance Carter, Dave Dreiwitz.“Elliott’s Muse.” Tonic Improv 5/11/00, Musso Music, 2007.Ed Watkins, Elliott Levin, Howard Cooper, Marshall Allen, Tyrone Hill.“March On Cumberland Street (Take 2).”Opportunities and Advantages, CIMP, 2003.Tyrone Hill & Elliott Levin Quartet. “PGC Blues (Take 2).”Soul-Etude, CIMP, 2000.Photo: mhamiltonvisuals.comRecorded August 2018 Hosted by Thomas HagenProduced by Jim Hamilton, Tyler Ripley and Thomas Hagen

We get to have a great hang with Ezra Gale of Molly Tigray! Molly Tigre marries the rhythms and melodies of African music– especially the entrancing styles from Ethiopia and Mali- with a uniquely progressive and exploratory jazz sound. Featuring the compositions of saxophonist Mitch Marcus (Donovan, Dave Dreiwitz) and bassist Ezra Gale (Super Hi-Fi, Aphrodesia), the band also features saxophonist Chris Hiatt (JaponizeElephants), drummer Joe Abba (Dave Douglas, The Ramones, Donny McCaslin) and percussionist Ibrahima Kolipe Camara (National Dance Company of Guinea, Kakande). The New York City based-quintet has been stewing since 2015, but their wide-ranging sound hasn't been captured on tape until now.
Seeing them again 6/10/17 on Thompson's Point (Thanks, Garbage to Garden!!)!
