I Sverige har vi en mer än tusen år lång historia av malmbrytning och metallframställning. Faktum är att vi haft uppemot 3 000 gruvor i landet, de flesta belägna i Bergslagen. Under Sveriges stormaktstid på 1600-talet utgjorde Falu koppargruva hela 2/3 av världens totala kopparproduktion, vilket förärade Sverige titeln som världens största kopparexportör. Men efter 1000 år i drift lades gruvan ned år 1992 och idag är det Chile i Sydamerika som är den största exportören och chilenska Escondida är den största gruvan. Men, kan det vara dags för en ny storhetstid? Senast en koppargruva startades i Sverige var år 1968, alltså för 56 år sedan. Det är något gruvbolaget Viscaria vill ändra på. De vill sätta sig själva och Sverige på kartan som en stor kopparleverantör på den europeiska marknaden genom att återstarta Viscaria-gruvan i Kiruna. The American Patchwork Quartet is a group that reflects the American melting pot – the patchwork quilt of people who've come and made the U.S.A. their home. APQ features two-time Grammy winner Clay Ross, of the band Ranky Tanky, drummer Clarence Penn, and two musicians who immigrated from Asia: the singer Falu (from India) and bassist Yasushi Nakamura (from Japan). Their debut, untitled album is just out, and includes fresh, often Indian-tinged arrangements of old fiddle tunes, folk hymns, and early blues. As the famed folksong collector and producer Alan Lomax said, “America has a patchwork culture made of the dreams and songs of all its people.” The American Patchwork Quartet performs their take on old folk songs in-studio.  Set list: 1. American Patchwork Quartet is a new musical group that seeks to highlight the immigrant histories of American roots music. Their debut album features American folk songs and standards blended with jazz, West African, East and Southeast Asian influences. Members Falu and Clay Ross join us to share performances, including their contribution to our 2024 Public Song Project.

In Unseen Flesh: Gynecology and Black Queer Worth-Making in Brazil (Duke University Press, 2023) Nessette Falu explores how Black lesbians in Brazil define and sustain their well-being and self-worth against persistent racial, sexual, class, and gender-based prejudice. Focusing on the trauma caused by interactions with gynecologists, Falu draws on in-depth ethnographic work among the Black lesbian community to reveal their profoundly negative affective experiences within Brazil's deeply biased medical system. In the face of such entrenched, intersectional intimate violence, Falu's informants actively pursue well-being in ways that channel their struggle for self-worth toward broader goals of social change, self care, and communal action. Demonstrating how the racist and heteronormative underpinnings of gynecology erase Black lesbian subjecthood through mental, emotional, and physical traumas, Falu explores the daily resistance and abolitionist practices of worth-making that claim and sustain Black queer identity and living. Malte Hasselgren has always been an underdog but a proven scorer.  He led the J18 West against big time players while playing for smaller club Falu IF and have always chosen his own path.  After J20, him and his brother tried their luck in the NAHL with Lone Star Brahmas and returned to finish his last year of juniors in Sweden with Oskarshamn and Brynas in J20 National. He then returned again to NAHL, this time with Oklahoma Warriors and finished on top with the Robertson Cup.

This week on Cultural Manifesto listen to a preview of an upcoming concert by the Grammy-winning Indian-American vocalist Falu. She'll be performing in Indianapolis this August with the American Patchwork Quartet. As a child in Mumbai, Falu studied North Indian classical music. Over the years she's worked with a wide range of artists - including Philip Glass, A.R. Rahman, Karsh Kale, Pretty Lights, and many others. Also hear new releases from Indianapolis musicians Hanna Benn and Jordan Munson.

This year, appearances by the talented Falu and The Resistance Revival Chorus graced the stage and we had some fantastic jams courtesy of DJ Suhel! The Desai Foundation's main focus for over 20 years has been empowering women and girls through community programs to elevate health and livelihood in India & U.S. During the 2021 COVID crisis, they shifted their focus to address the needs of the communities we serve, while also leveraging the programs that were already in place. The foundation is currently operating in 1000 villages, and has reached a population of over 3.4 million people. Their work cultivates dignity so that everyone can dream beyond their circumstances.
