Evan and John break down a 1-5 road trip and what the addition of Alejandro Osuna might mean in both the short- and long-term. Jake Burger joins the guys to explain the role his minor league assignment played, if there is divine intervention involved in his turnaround and exactly how as a pro player he ended up playing in a college league during the pandemic. And finally, John cracks open the archives to tell a Billy Martin story, which usually involves fisticuffs, and the number of times the Rangers appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated. The drummer and percussionist Billy Martin, whose name many Time Sensitive listeners may recognize—he created the Time Sensitive theme song—defies any boxed-in or limiting definitions of his work. Best known as a member of the band Medeski Martin & Wood (MMW), he's spent the past three-plus decades making experimental, boundary-pushing, and uncategorizable instrumental jazz-funk-groove music, shaping sounds that feel as expansive as they are definitive and distinctive. Across all his artistic output, Martin continually, meditatively searches for harmony. He is also a composer, a teacher, a visual artist, and a builder and craftsman. His expansive creative practice comes most alive at his home in Englewood, New Jersey, where he has cultivated a bamboo garden, crafted his own Japanese-style teahouse, and constructed a music studio. Martin is someone for whom rhythm is not just something heard, but also seen and felt.On the episode, he talks about his MMW journey at length, his concept of “rhythmic harmony,” and why he views sound creation as a sacred act.Special thanks to our Season 11 presenting sponsor, Van Cleef & Arpels.Show notes:Billy Martin[7:31] Medeski Martin & Wood[7:31] John Medeski[7:31] Chris Wood[7:31] “Not Not Jazz” (2024)[10:12] Iggy Pop's “Avenue B” (1999)[10:12] Don Was[11:27] “The Lover” (1995)[11:27] “Friday Afternoon in the Universe” (1995)[11:27] “Old Angel Midnight” (1973) by Jack Kerouac[13:44] Ra-Kalam Bob Moses[13:44] John Scofield[13:44] David Baker[15:57] “Shuck It Up” (1993)[15:57] “It's a Jungle in Here” (1993)[18:12] “Latin Shuffle” (1998)[18:12] “Combustication” (1998)[18:12] Frankie Malabe[18:12] Art Blakey[33:25] Thelonious Monk[33:58] “Life on Drums” (2011)[38:32] John Bonham[38:32] Charlie Watts[38:32] Stewart Copeland[38:32] Elvin Jones[38:32] Max Roach[38:32] Danny Richmond[38:32] Charles Mingus[38:32] Jack DeJohnette[38:32] Joe Morello[38:32] Roy Haynes[38:32] Stan Getz[38:32] Airto Moreira[38:32] Naná Vasconcelos[38:32] Babatunde Olatunji[39:58] Gus Johnson[39:58] “Whatever Happened to Gus” (1998)[39:58] Steve Cannon[40:54] “Chubb Sub” (1995)[40:54] ”Uncle Chubb” (1992)[46:41] “Shack-man” (1996)[47:06] “Drumming Birds” (2004)[54:48] “Bamboo Rainsticks” (1999)[54:48] Amulet Records[1:00:23] Creative Music Studio

Amin. (Dod).

In this powerful episode recorded live at the iP Utility Safety Conference in Charleston, Brent Jeffries of Bierer Meters and Billy Martin of Think Tank Project LLC dive deep into the overlooked element of utility safety: human connection. They explore how emotional energy, team environment, and psychological safety can make or break a crew's performance. From “rebuilding the energy wheel” to becoming the invisible force of change, this conversation reveals the power of empathy, intention, and interaction in keeping utility workers safe.   Key Takeaways: Connection is a safety tool: Emotional and interpersonal connection within teams enhances decision-making and reduces risk. The “11th element” in energy systems is people—and they must be factored into hazard assessments. Environment shapes behavior: A supportive work environment directly impacts performance and longevity, as seen through both human and animal examples. Words have power: Negative language can become a hazard; leaders should speak with intention to neutralize risk. Small gestures spark change: Simple acts like eye contact, encouragement, or a check-in can be the catalyst for major cultural shifts.    5 Questions & Answers:   Q1: What is the “11th element” Brant refers to in his energy wheel? A: It's people—the human factor often missing when discussing risks from energy sources. People introduce variables that can either mitigate or magnify those risks.   Q2: Why is eye contact in meetings and safety talks so important? A: According to studies referenced by Billy, eye contact synchronizes brainwaves and builds engagement, making communication more impactful and meaningful.   Q3: How can leaders positively shift a team's culture? A: By creating an environment of trust, curiosity, and communication. Even small, positive interactions can interrupt negativity and ripple into long-term change.   Q4: Why is it important to not wait for policy to make safety changes? A: As Billy shared, real change often comes too late. Leaders should act on what's right now instead of waiting for approval or regulation.   Q5: How does the “wind” analogy apply to utility safety? A: Wind represents invisible forces—like morale, communication, and emotions—that shape outcomes. Leaders can't always see them, but they can harness and redirect them.   Subscribe to Incident Prevention Magazine - https://incident-prevention.com/subscribe-now/ Register for the iP Utility Safety Conference & Expo - https://utilitysafetyconference.com/   #UtilitySafety #HumanPerformance #SafetyLeadership #WorkplaceCulture #EmotionalIntelligence #SafetyInnovation   ________________________________ This podcast is sponsored by T&D Powerskills. As a player, Billy Martin was a fundamentally sound second basemen with a .257 batting average over an 11 year playing career, most notably for the Yankees fom 1950 to 1957. On the World Series stage, he was a clutch beast with a .333/.371/.369 slash-line, 5 Home Runs and 19 runs driven in, with flawless defensive play. As a manager, he developed the reputation of a strategical genius, who could ostensibly turn almost any team into a contender. But he was also considered a longterm liability whose erratic personal behavior, usually due to his excessive alcohol consumption. and his inability to handle veteran players, or young pitchers, led to early dismissals. In his 16 seasons as a field general, he would win five divisional titles with four different franchises; two American League Pennants and a World Championship in 1977 with the Yankees. Episode 280 features former Major League Baseball Umpire, Al Clark and barbecue aficionado, Big Rome sharing wonderfully entertaining stories and bringing the heat. Al Clark was a Major League Baseball umpire for 30 years, working more than 3,000 games, including two All-Star Games, ten playoff series, and two World Series.  We discuss his book, Called Out But Safe:  A Baseball Umpire's Journey.  The book was first published more than 10 years ago, but the stories are timeless and extremely entertaining.  Al has been on the field for many historic games, including Nolan Ryan's 300th win, Cal Ripken's record breaker, and the 1989 World Series which will forever be remembered, not becuase of who won, but due to an earthquake.  Al dealt with Earl Weaver, Billy Martin, and Dick Williams, all of whom were known for their harsh treamant of umpires.  Hearing Al tell the story of his "fake" confrontation with Lou Piniella is worth the price of admission. Big Rome has taken his love and passion for barbecue and incorporated that into so many facets.  He has created a line-up of barbecue rubs, does catering, makes entertaining cooking videos, and is a brand ambassador.  He has also dabbled in the podcast space, creating a barbecue fire side chat for his fellow barbecue lovers, especially his Texas Barbecue Crew.  Big Rome is a Los Angeles Dodgers fan and we discuss the team's World Series victory, the upcoming season, and other baseball talk.  For more information on Big Rome go to https://www.bigromesbbqempirellc.com/ We recommend you go to Baseball BBQ, https://baseballbbq.com for special grilling tools and accessories, Magnechef https://magnechef.com/ for excellent and unique barbecue gloves, Cutting Edge Firewood High Quality Kiln Dried Firewood - Cutting Edge Firewood in Atlanta for high quality firewood and cooking wood, Mantis BBQ, https://mantisbbq.com/ to purchase their outstanding sauces with a portion of the proceeds being donated to the Kidney Project, and for exceptional sauces, Elda's Kitchen https://eldaskitchen.com/   We conclude the show with the song, Baseball Always Brings You Home from the musician, Dave Dresser and the poet, Shel Krakofsky. Of course I'm the guy that will bring it up.    In KCMO they are blaming all the crime on everything except a city hall that's not a fan of the police department.  The latest?  Brookside residents want the National Guard called in.   If you're of a certain age, your childhood as a sports fan was defined by Royals/Yankees playoff series' and it was mostly awful.  Walk off home runs, storming the field, Billy Martin messing with George Brett and homer Howard Cosell calling all the big games.  It was dreadful.  This series could help erase whatever 1980's win over the Bombers did not.    Chris Jones had a wonderful interview on NFL Network talking about the team's mission this year, we'll play part of it for you as the Chiefs prep for the Saints.  Lee Sterling of www.paramountsports.com is here with his picks and our song of the week is one of the hottest tickets in music singing a song that sounds like it's about Joe and Hunter Biden.

In the summer of 1974, the Cleveland Indians were not a very good team and their owner was thinking of every way possible to get fans in the seats. How about this for an idea: 10-cent Beer Night? All you can drink for just 10-cents a cup. What could go wrong? To the 9th inning we go and after a game highlighted with fans jumping onto the field, many of them in their birthday suits, the chaos turned into complete bedlam. Rangers Outfielder Jeff Burroughs was being harassed in right field by fans who were surrounding him. His manager Billy Martin led the "Charge of the Light Brigade" with his players rushing out of the dugout... bats in hand. Seats were being thrown from the top deck onto the field. 60,000 cups of beer had been purchased and the results of that were now evident. It was a full-scale riot. Milt Wilcox pitched the top of the 9th inning for the Indians and tells us how some of his "connected" friends kept him out of harms way while Cleveland writer Vince Guerreri, author of the book, "Weird Moments in Clebeland Sports" tells us that despite the comeplete bedlam this wasn't the first time they held the promotion... and shockingly... it wouldn't be the last... 1978 World Series Games 1 and 2 Tuesday October 10th and Wednesday October 11th @ Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles, CA The Los Angeles Dodgers (95 - 67) and the New York Yankees (100 - 63) meet yet again in the World Series. Behind the heroics of Mr. October, Reggie Jackson, the Yankees took last year's Fall Classic in six games, securing the 21st championship in their franchise's dominant history. If they're going to repeat as champions, it will be with a new manager, as Bob Lemon replaced Billy Martin in July. The Yanks turned their season around under the stewardship of Lemon, who was inducted into the Hall of Fame as a pitcher in 1976. His cool, calm, and collected manner was in stark contrast to the explosive Martin; still, there are rumors abound that owner George Steinbrenner regretted firing the firebrand (technically Martin resigned for ‘health reasons'), and even wanted him back as manager within a matter of days. You can't deny the success the Yankees have had under Lemon, but they'll need to win it all to satisfy the Boss. And even that might not keep him happy for long. The Dodgers dispatched the Phillies in four games, winning the series in walk-off fashion with a Bill Russell single to score Ron Cey. Their offense was hitting on all cylinders in the NLCS, and it was their vaunted All-Star infield that led the way. The aforementioned left side (Russell and Cey) combined for 12 hits and 5 RBI in the four games, only to be outdone by the right side. Team Captain 2B Davey Lopes and former MVP 1B Steve Garvey combined for 14 hits, 6 home runs, and 12 RBI, with Garvey taking home NLCS MVP honors. It has been truly inspired play from this core group, who lost their mentor, hitting and infield coach Jim Gilliam, just a few days ago. His memorial service is planned before the start of game two.  Dodgers manager Tommy Lasorda desperately wants to start this series with a pair of wins, so to defend home-field advantage he will turn to the top two in his excellent rotation, Tommy John and Burt Hooton. John is coming off of a shutout against Philly, and Hooton is as good as anyone when that knuckle curve is dancing. Yankees manager Bob Lemon will counter with 1978 20 game winner Ed Figueroa and former five time 20 game winner Catfish Hunter. Ace Ron Guidry won't be available until game three, as he pitched the final game of the ALCS against Kansas City. Audio clips from joeydbball on Youtube (links to games below). 1978 Game AL East Playoff Monday October 2nd, 1978 @ Fenway Park Boston, MA After 162 games played, the bitter rivals of the northeast find themselves deadlocked for the division crown, each sporting identical 99-63 records. The entire season comes down to just one game at Fenway Park, and it's gonna be a great one. It looked like it was going to be a banner year for the Red Sox, with Jim Rice playing like an MVP, Dennis Eckersley winning 20 games, and a whole host of spectacular performances. But like the previous season, the division lead began slipping away. They were up 14 games on the Yankees in mid-July, but that was cut to just 7 games by the end of August. And after a four game sweep dubbed “The Boston Massacre” in early September, the Yankees had caught the Sox.  The downward spiral continued in Beantown, but a furious rally of eight straight wins to close the season has forced a playoff against the Yanks. Having been forced to use their best starters (Eckersley and Luis Tiant), manager Don Zimmer will turn to an experienced, post-season tested veteran, Mike Torrez (16 - 12 3.92 ERA 243 IP). The big righty was instrumental for New York's World Series run in 1977, but he has scuffled in the stretch run, losing 6 of his last 7 decisions. They'll need him to recapture his form if they hope to advance to the ALCS. The 1977 season was tumultuous for the New York Yankees, but it culminated in a World Series and a return of nearly everyone who contributed to that greatness. But a second go-round for this group was filled with turmoil once again, as the Yankees struggled out of the gate. This time, there was too much trouble on and off the field, and it cost Billy Martin his job. They were just 52 - 42 with Martin at the helm, but once again caught fire (47 - 20) in the second half under Bob Lemon's stewardship. Reggie Jackson, Thurman Munson, Graig Nettles were excellent once again. Goose Gossage was a new weapon out of the pen, and Catfish Hunter had a great rebound. The story of this season, however, was the ascendance of their young lefty, Ron Guidry. The fireballer ran roughshod through the entire American League (24 - 3 1.72 ERA 267 IP), putting together one of the most dominant modern pitching seasons in baseball history. He will get the ball with the season on the line, and there's no other pitcher in the league you'd rather have. 1977 World Series Game 6 Tuesday October 18th, 1977 @ Yankee Stadium in New York, New York The Dodgers avoided elimination behind an explosive rout in game five, but now they're going to have to do it on the road. Burt Hooton (12 - 7 2.62 ERA 223 IP) will get the ball with the season on the line, and the veteran righty was absolutely brilliant in game two. To stay alive in this series, LA manager Tommy Lasorda will need the man he jocularly called “Happy” to deliver once again. The Yankees are just one win away from securing their 21st World Series trophy, but all is far from well in the Bronx. The originally scheduled starter was Ed Figueroa, but a finger issue and questions of effectiveness made manager Billy Martin turn to righty Mike Torrez (17 - 13 3.88 ERA 243 IP). The Figueroa Situation became headline news as he threatened to leave the team and fly back to Puerto Rico upon hearing he wouldn't pitch. Tensions were eventually resolved there, but it was not the only problem in the clubhouse. Reggie Jackson, Thurman Munson, Billy Martin, George Steinbrenner, and the press were all feuding with one another, and there was a bombshell report suggesting that Martin would be fired if the Yanks lost the series. To the shock of many, GM Gabe Paul announced before game 6 that Martin signed a contract extension through the 1979 season. A brilliant chess move from “the Boss”, but it would only work if the Yankees could seal the deal tonight. And to really quell the doubts, a superstar performance may be required. He also created Dab Sessions to celebrate improvisation.  These projects have allowed him to collaborate with some of the best musicians of our era including Jeff Sipe, Adam Deitch, Domi and JD Beck, Jonathan Scales, Jeff Coffin, Felix Pastorius, Clyde Stubblefield, Dennis Chambers, Billy Martin, and Claude Coleman, Jr.  The list goes on.After sitting down to talk with him it became clear to me that he has been able to work with so many greats, not just because he's a great musician (and he is), but also because he has focused on developing and cultivating relationships. It's clear he's not just in it for himself. Check out his latest band, Chess Club, where he and Danny Darress inject humor into well crafted melodies and rhythms.
