Matt Groening discovered the things that helped shape his artistic sensibility when he was 12 years old: psychedelia, the Grateful Dead, Catch-22, and of course cartooning. Matt explains to Marc how the road to creating The Simpsons started in Portland, Oregon and had stops in New York City, Los Angeles, the Licorice Pizza record store, the LA Reader and the office of James L. Brooks. They also talk about The Simpsons becoming a breeding ground for comedy writing talent and Matt reveals, for the first time, who was the real inspiration for Homer Simpson. Hosted on Acast. In part one of Red Eye Radio with Gary McNamara and Eric Harley, a federal judge has again blocked President Trump's efforts to deploy National Guard troops into Portland in a late-night decision on Sunday. District Judge Karin Immergut ruled the action was unlawful and unconstitutional, issuing an emergency temporary restraining order to halt the deployment of California's National Guard. The order also bars the use of troops from any other state or Washington, D.C. in Oregon. Now the President may turn to Texas Governor Greg Abbott who would rule much differently. Also the nation's largest police union condemned reports that Chicago officers were told not to help ICE agents surrounded by protesters, calling it "shocking" and a violation of law enforcement's duty to protect fellow officers in danger, Hakeem Jeffries exploiting a tax abatement on his million dollar NYC apartment, controversial psychologist Dr. Jordan Peterson spent nearly a month in intensive care and was “near death” while battling pneumonia and sepsis this summer, his daughter revealed in an emotional video update and Virginia's Democratic candidate for Attorney General, Jay Jones, is facing bipartisan backlash after text messages from 2022 surfaced showing him fantasizing about shooting then-House Speaker Todd Gilbert. While the government shutdown continues, Congress remains at a standstill on whether it can reopen the government anytime soon. Meanwhile, both Democrats and Republicans are fighting over who is to blame for the shutdown. Last week, New York City Mayor Eric Adams dropped out of the mayoral race. With just weeks to go until Election Day, three candidates remain. New York Republican Representative Nicole Malliotakis joins the Rundown to discuss whether Congress can reopen the government soon. She also provides insight into the current state of the New York City mayoral race. American farmers say they're feeling the pain of President Trump's trade policies. Soybean crops are among those in storage, as Chinese importers, the top buyers of US-grown soybeans, are now looking elsewhere while America and China work on a trade deal. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins joins the Rundown to discuss the concerns of American farmers and what the Trump administration is doing to bring them relief. Plus, commentary from Co-Chair of the Republican National Committee Youth Council, CJ Pearson. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

The architect Stanford White is credited with a host of landmark structures in Newport, New York City, and beyond. But it was his sexual predation of young girls, especially the young model and showgirl Evelyn Nesbit, that led to his shockingly public murder and the 1907 "Trial of the Century" in its aftermath. The who was never in question. Harry K. Thaw was the culprit. It was Harry's motive for the crime, defending his young wife Evelyn, that fascinated the public. Included in today's investigation is a whole heap of New York City history, from newspapers to theaters, as well as high society figures, sexual secrets, professional jealousies, and courtroom dramas - all set against a landscape designed by the actual victim of the crime. Today, Nicole and Diana welcome Gavin Beinart-Smollan, the Public Historian in Residence at The Jewish Board, one of New York State's largest and oldest mental health and social service agencies. Gavin is also a PhD candidate at New York University, researching the history of Jewish immigration and the Jewish immigrant family. He is the project lead for 150yearsofcare.org, a digital history exhibition and genealogy database. In this episode, Gavin discusses two incredible resources: the National Desertion Bureau Card Catalog (1911–1935) and the United Hebrew Charities of New York Recipients & Donors (1869–1877) database. Diana asks Gavin about the National Desertion Bureau Card Catalog, an index to cases where an agency helped women track down husbands who had abandoned their families. Gavin explains that the catalog includes husband's and wife's names, case dates, referring agencies, and causes of desertion, which can include "another woman," "lack of support," or "laziness." He also mentions that longer case files contain even more information and sometimes even photos. Nicole asks why a mental health and social service agency would build a genealogy database, and Gavin explains that it connects people in poverty to the past. He also shares how the Desertion Bureau functioned, including advertising cases in Yiddish newspapers to shame men into returning, and discusses the ethical considerations of making this material public. Diana then asks Gavin about the United Hebrew Charities of New York Recipients & Donors database, a dataset of recipients and donors from New York City's United Hebrew Charities in 1873. Gavin describes how this smaller dataset includes names, street addresses, amounts of aid, and “worthiness” notations. Listeners will learn how to search these unique databases, the type of genealogical data they contain, and the historical context of charity and social services in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Lionel describes a "subversive" experience: attending a packed, shoulder-to-shoulder 50th-anniversary screening of the documentary Grey Gardens at the legendary Paris Theater in New York City. He contrasts this powerful, communal event with the isolation of "binge streaming" and "digital dopamine drips". Lionel argues that the movie theater was once the "cathedral of American culture", an experience lost when "scrolling Tik Tok" or watching Netflix. Callers join the conversation to discuss the pivotal films—such as The Godfather, Network, and Jaws—that were "integral to your development" and "changed the way you thought". Three actors, one enigmatic play, and surprising insights into collaboration, craft, and curiosity What can three actors teach you about memory, silence, and creativity? The abortion market was a powerful economic force in American life. Before legalization lowered the cost, one million women each year collectively paid upward of $750 million for abortions. In The Abortion Market: Buying and Selling Access in the Era Before Roe (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2025), Dr. Katherine Parkin reveals the strength of a massive consumer market that involved loans, advertising, and travel, as well as the costs associated with the procedure itself. Laying the foundation for the emergence of a public market that facilitated the buying and selling of abortions, wealthy population control ideologues encouraged positive public discourse on abortion, funded medical studies, and waged legal battles. White, middle- and upper-class women sought out abortions and paid exorbitantly for them. Male entrepreneurs emerged to capitalize on the booming market and profit from the incredible demand. Advertising on billboards and in college newspapers, men profited by providing the phone number, getting kickbacks for delivering patients, and arranging for women's travel to Mexico, Puerto Rico, England, and Japan. Students demanded abortion access and organized when it came at a steep cost, especially to the poorest among them. Abortion providers in Kansas, California, and Washington, D.C. attracted out-of-state consumers, with some women aided by their universities or by medical insurance. Between 1970 and 1973, entrepreneurs, providers, and hundreds of thousands of women seeking to buy abortions headed to New York City, heralded by some as the “abortion capital of the world.” While we may have imagined that securing an abortion was best understood as a hidden, woman-only experience, The Abortion Market reveals the extent to which businesses and businessmen openly selling abortion access shaped the experience of buying abortions for millions of women. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. George Washington Arrives in Depopulated New York City, Debating the Burning of the Rebel AnchorProfessor Benjamin L. Carp, Professor of History at Brooklyn College and the CUNY Graduate Center | The Great New York Fire of 1776: A Lost Story of the American Revolution In spring 1776, George Washington arrived in New York City, the colonies' second-largest town, finding it small (25,000 people) and politically divided. Two-thirds of the population had fled anticipating conflict. Washington controlled the urbanized area south of Canal Street, occupied by his Continental Army, which he described as ill-disciplined. Before the fire, Washington privately believed burning the city was a good idea to deprive the British of winter quarters. The central question remains: was the fire accidental or by design?
This week we're celebrating Jocktober by reviewing multiple radio shows. We start with the biggest name in morning radio, Howard Stern. On Tuesday the king of all media had a ridiculous argument with his wife about whether or not he's “fun.” It's pretty obvious that this marriage is on the ropes based on the conversation and the specific words that are being used by Beth. Erik Nagel joins the show along with first-time guest and Howard Stern expert MLP. NYC news station 1010 WINS had a very unfortunate x-rated broadcast earlier this week. Tom Myers is back with his political podcast after taking the entire summer off and his monologue does disappoint. Morning radio staple War of the Roses had a short-lived and ill-advised animated series that iHeart quickly removed from Earth. Opie addresses the purchased views and complains about $2 superchats from “haters.” Jeffrey from the morning duo Brooke and Jeffrey sings a parody song about Cal Raleigh and there isn't a joke to be found. We help the very stable Pulper connect with Erock. Stuttering John might have a new lawsuit on his hands as Anthony Cumia claims John SA'd a woman in Vegas. Finally, we play a round of To Poke A Dabbler, get caught up on Internet News, and listen to recent voicemails. “Giving kids, and yourself, language to wrap around the idea that we have an inner leader (our kindest, best self) is transformative.” Join me as I talk with Lily Howard Scott, a NYC-based parent, educator, and author, who shares insights from her book The Words That Shape Us: The Science-Based Power of Teacher Language. We're exploring how our internal self-talk shapes our perceptions of students and ourselves, and how intentional language can transform classroom culture. Lily shares practical strategies for helping students of all ages: Notice and separate from their thoughts and feelings (“feelings as visitors”) Understand they are always good inside, even when they make a bad choice Access their wisest self to respond thoughtfully instead of reacting automatically Lily also introduces tools like “outer shells and inner swirls” to help students notice assumptions and guide interactions in more mindful, empowering ways. Whether you're looking to improve classroom culture, support student self-reflection, or strengthen your own teacher mindset, this episode offers actionable strategies and inspiring reminders about the words we choose and the impact they have. Support the Show: Patreon.com/PreacherBoys✖️✖️✖️In December 2020, Lindsey became the first woman to publicly accuse former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo of sexual harassment. Her courage set off a political firestorm, triggered a statewide investigation, and ultimately led to his resignation. But now, despite everything, Cuomo is back — running for mayor of New York City.Lindsey is sounding the alarm about what it means when powerful men are able to reinvent themselves without ever facing real accountability. In our conversation, Lindsey and I go beyond Cuomo. We talk about the Democratic establishment itself — about how figures like Joe Biden, Bill and Hillary Clinton, Kirsten Gillibrand, and others have navigated allegations of misconduct in their own ranks. We explore how party loyalty, for-profit media, and name recognition often take priority over justice, leaving survivors sidelined and even used as "shields" for others. This is a story about how institutions protect their own and rationalize abuse when it threatens power — and what it takes to blow the whistle.✖️✖️✖️If you or someone you know has experienced abuse, visit courage365.org/need-help✖️✖️✖️CONNECT WITH THE SHOW:preacherboyspodcast.comhttps://www.youtube.com/@PreacherBoyshttps://www.facebook.com/preacherboysdoc/https://twitter.com/preacherboysdochttps://www.instagram.com/preacherboyspodhttps://www.tiktok.com/@preacherboyspodTo connect with a community that shares the Preacher Boys Podcast's mission to expose abuse in the IFB, join the OFFICIAL Preacher Boys Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1403898676438188/✖️✖️✖️The content presented in this video is for informational and educational purposes only. (00:00) Weather and Golf Post Ryder Cup This chapter brings us to the picturesque Pine Canyon in Flagstaff, Arizona, where we share a mix of personal experiences and reflections on recent golf events. We recount the unexpected hailstorms and flooding in Arizona, painting a vivid picture of the unusual weather conditions that recently swept through the region. Amidst this backdrop, I took the opportunity to savor a quiet day on the golf course, capturing videos and appreciating the scenic beauty before the onset of winter. We then shift our focus to the Ryder Cup, highlighting the challenges faced by even the world's best golfers in alternate shot formats. The discussion emphasizes the psychological pressures of playing not just for oneself, but also for a partner and country. We explore how the European team's familiarity with match play contributed to their superior preparation and performance, leading to a decisive advantage in the initial rounds against the U.S. team. (12:08) Ryder Cup Crowd Behavior Discussion This chapter takes us through a candid conversation about golf, regional attitudes, and sportsmanship. Jeff Smith joins from Flagstaff, Arizona, as we discuss the challenge of playing at Bethpage Black, one of the toughest courses. We reminisce about Michael Michaelides, who worked there and his New York grit. The discussion turns to the notorious behavior of some New York fans during the Ryder Cup, reflecting on the negative stereotypes of the "ugly American" and sharing personal anecdotes from living in New York. We explore the tension between being a sports fan and maintaining respect, especially when witnessing the unprecedented face-off between the world's top two golfers. As someone who spent my teenage years in New York City, I share insights into the sometimes brusque nature of New Yorkers, illustrating the contrast with an amusing story about our move from Boston. (16:34) Golf Techniques This chapter offers a delightful blend of sports commentary and musical nostalgia. We share our appreciation for the professionalism of broadcasters Terry Gannon and Dan Hicks, while also distinguishing Dan Hicks from the country singer of the same name, known for his hit "How Can I Miss You When You Won't Go Away." Our discussion then transitions to the golf world, focusing on Brad Faxon's insightful commentary and the notable absence of Keegan Bradley from a major tournament despite being the 13th ranked player globally. We speculate on the challenges and pressures that might have influenced his decision not to play, and reflect on the relentless nature of armchair critics. Additionally, we ponder the minute differences in skill and precision that can determine success in golf, particularly during high-stakes competitions like the Ryder Cup. (32:07) Sound Analysis and Sporting Events This chapter explores the nuances of sound in golf, particularly how experienced caddies like Jim "Bones" McKay can discern the difference between an average and a perfect strike, as demonstrated through the example of PGA Tour winner Tyler Duncan. We also touch on travel experiences, discussing scenic and not-so-scenic routes across the United States, from the engaging landscapes of Sedona to the tedious drive from Phoenix to Palm Springs. Additionally, we reflect on the recent disappointment at the Ryder Cup, despite high expectations, and share plans for an upcoming road trip across the country. Alongside these discussions, there is an exciting mention of attending a concert, with a hint of humor regarding who the performers might be. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Eight (ish?) years ago, actor/comedian/Emmy winner Jeff Hiller was a guest on this podcast to discuss reading celebrity memoirs. Today he returns to discuss what it was like to WRITE one! We were so excited to talk to Jeff we did the unprecedented/confusing thing of doing another episode of this podcast which for real is not happening anymore! Okay, back to Jeff! After the success of playing Joel on the terrific HBO show Somebody, Somewhere Jeff wrote a memoir "Actress Of A Certain Age." It tells stories of growing up in Texas, working for non profits in Denver and Africa, pursuing acting in NYC, doing improv at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater, moving to LA and then back to NYC and lots more. We were thrilled to talk to Jeff about his book and his life! Thank you Jeff! For minor obsessions, Anthony talked about trying to switch from reading social media to getting daily email newsletters and Will discussed the maddening video game Baby Steps. Thanks to John Flynn (who wrote his own terrific memoir Baked) for suggesting this episode!

Who came up with the idea that the middle of the road is the right place to be? Regular listeners to Mitch Goldman's Deep Focus know that it's those shadowy corners, those Edge Cities, where new things start to happen. And who embodied this idea more than drummer Tony Williams' late sixties supergroup, Lifetime? Lifetime inspired another supergroup in 2008 when guitarist Vernon Reid and bassist Jack Bruce (himself a member of Lifetime) formed Spectrum Road with drummer Cindy Blackman and keyboard conjurer John Medeski. Did these 4 masters of many musical disciplines present faithful recreations of Lifetime's original recordings? Or did their live shows start where Lifetime ended, and end up in the highest towers of their own Edge City? Mitch's guest, guitarist Ben Tyree, knows the answer. Ben has shared stages with and drawn inspiration from at least 2 of these 4 innovators. He credits John Medeski with inspiring his life-changing move to New York City. And will the WKCR archives yield live, unreleased recordings that will bear him out? We don't know ourselves, and the suspense is just killing us! Find out Monday (9/1) when Mitch Goldman and Ben Tyree plunge into the vast WKCR archive. Deep Focus airs Mondays from 6p to 9p NYC time on WKCR 89.9FM, WKCR-HD, or wkcr.org. After Jeffrey Epstein's death in 2019, the official ruling from the New York City Medical Examiner's Office was that he died by suicide in his Manhattan jail cell. However, that conclusion came under intense scrutiny when Dr. Michael Baden, a well-known forensic pathologist hired by Epstein's brother, publicly suggested that the injuries were more consistent with homicide. In response, Barbara Sampson, then–Chief Medical Examiner of New York City, forcefully defended the office's findings and rejected Baden's assertions. She stated unequivocally that the autopsy results, combined with the investigation, supported suicide by hanging, not foul play.Sampson's rebuttal was meant to put to rest the growing wave of speculation, but it also underscored the divide between official conclusions and the swirl of doubt fueled by Epstein's powerful connections and the suspicious circumstances of his death. By directly countering Baden, she stood by the credibility of her office's work, stressing that outside opinions could not outweigh the evidence they had gathered. Still, the public's mistrust lingered, and her statements became part of the broader controversy over whether Epstein's death was truly a suicide or part of a larger cover-up.to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-epstein-chronicles--5003294/support.

Although summer is long gone, the Holiday season for travel and vacation is just around the corner. Throughout the years, my family and I have been on a number of vacations where we've made memories and still talk about our experiences, today. Whether it's the mountains in Tennessee, a cabana in Negril, Jamaica, the busy streets of New York City, or the magnificent Grand Canyon. Whether you're traveling to a far-off destination, or just taking a few days off at home, vacationing can be one of the most restorative things you do for your mind and body. But the real key is approaching it mindfully — before, during, and after your time away.Connect with me --> https://drmatmonharrell.bio.link/ Written by Dr. Matmon HarrellMusic provided by Podcastle Hosted on Acast. The hilarious Jake Johnson, co-host of the We're Here To Help podcast and Peter Parker in the Spider-Verse films, joins Paul and Jason to cover Grizzly II: Revenge—a "horror" movie featuring George Clooney, Laura Dern, and Charlie Sheen that was filmed in 1983 and finally released in 2020 with a bunch of modern b-roll. They discuss all the concert footage, John Rhys-Davies' amazingly uncomfortable portrayal of Bouchard, the poachers who only want money and boners, the weird daddy/daughter vibes, and—wait... enough about the movie! Which hot young actors are Geek Sqwad?? Elordi is Geek Sqwad. Sweeney is Geek Sqwad. Zendaya? NOT Geek Sqwad! Who are the Geek Sqwad? A generation of digital native actors AND they get it.
