On The Eastman Dental Podcast this week, Jocelyn (Joss) Harding joins Julia and Josh for the first episode of Series 3.Joss started her dental career in the Royal Navy at the age of 19, where she completed training and qualified as a dental hygienist. In her 9-year career, Joss served in the UK and abroad, supporting general dentists and specialists. Joss is now a clinical ambassador for the Mouth Cancer Foundation and part of the working party updating the 2021 GOV.UK DBOH guidelines in the prevention and early detection of mouth cancer. She is also a part of the United Kingdom Oral Management in Cancer care group (UKOMIC) and the World Dental Federation (FDI) consensus group. Jacqueline Biggar is a Sydney based Oral Health Therapist who recently made the move to offer routine preventive dental services where it is most needed by clients. Jacquie's mobile dental ‘clinic' is totally portable and allows clients to receive basic dental care and hygiene services comfort and confines of their own home or care facility. Every dental clinician acknowledges that are clients (especially older clients) are often unable to access traditional dental visits for routine or preventive dental care either temporarily or permanently. In July 2020, Oral Health Therapists, Dental Hygienists and Dental Therapists became independent practitioners and are now able to ‘branch out' and reach those who are most often overlooked and incredibly vulnerable from an oral health perspective. More than 1 million Oregonians live in an area with a shortage of dental care providers. A new program at Pacific University aims to bolster the dental workforce. The first cohort of the university’s dental therapy pilot program started their training on February 1. Dental therapists are mid-level practitioners who can provide dental services at a lower cost than dentists. We talk with Amy Coplen, program director of the School of Dental Hygiene at Pacific University.
