We used to get asked a lot WHY we homeschooled…like all the time….twenty years ago or more. Nowadays, reasons for homeschooling are as diverse as the number of people homeschooling. There are not just a handful of reasons any more—and many of the reasons (especially the fear-based ones) are not as prevalent as they were. (Not sure if this is all good….we need to fear some things for our kids.) After thirty-two years of homeschooling (and being done for two years now—well, done with our own kids, but not the 170 kids in our classes and part time programs!), we have narrowed it down to one big reason—with lots of sub reasons. Truly, TIME is the biggest reason that I would homeschool if I had it to do all over again—and is something I would like for you to at least consider in your decision to homeschool or not, go to school or stay home, continue on or end. I don't think it is something that people talk about a lot….but it was hugely impactful to our family! ___ I. Starting Out A. Chose homeschooling out of fear of all of the “bad” stuff 1. Bad peers 2. Bad curriculum (secular) 3. Bad environment B. “Pioneers” 1 . We were afraid of everything (unfortunately) 2. Very Bible-driven and character-focused (fortunately) II. Middle Years A. As older kids entered high school 1. Moving away from fear a little and more into reality (these kids need occupations!) 2. Focused in on academics while still keeping a character-basis and a relationship style of parenting B. Began writing curriculum and testing it with homeschooled kids III. Ending Years A. Relationships with adult kids and kids still in school 1. Realized more and more it was the time we have had together 2. Adult kids still needed the time B. Watched siblings as many as ten and twelve years apart develop close relationships IV. The NUMBER ONE Benefit of Homeschooling—Time A. Time cannot be duplicated, redeemed, or reallocated 1. Average American mom spends 13.5 hours a week with her child; average homeschooling mom spends 77 hours a week with her child 2. My own quick math a. 8 hours a day x 180 days b. Yields 1440 more hours per year that kids who are homeschooled are with their parents/siblings c. Probably between 1500 and 2000 per year with 9 hour days, bus rides, before and after school activities, etc. 3. Any way you slice it, it is too much time to try to “make up for” on weekends or holidays or summers. The sheer number of hours is staggering. a. At 1500 hours a year x 13 years b. Nearly 20,000 hours B. Time that kids are with parents 1. Who is going to shape your child during those 20,000 hours? 2. Do we want it to be teachers and peers or us? C. Time to lean in to their strengths and weaknesses 1. Academically 2. Becoming who they will become 3. Emotional support D. Time with siblings 1. Who are your best friends here? 2. Who matters more than anyone else here? E. Time equals influence 1. “You will become the five people you spend your time with” 2. Kids change according to who they are with and what expectations and allowances are made 3. Time influence is the time of the people who ARE influencing your kids (you) and time that peers are NOT influencing your kids. F. The thing we put our time into is what grows 1. Do we want the home to be the center of your child's world or the school? 2. If our kids go to school, we SHOULD put the effort and time into that school due to the number of hours are kids spend there (don't send them then complain about everything!) 3. Make your home the center of your family, not the school V. Summary A. Do I think all is lost if kids go to school? 1. No! 2. But it takes supernatural effort and work B. Co-ops, half day programs, Friday School, private tutors, even babysitters overseeing some work can all make it happen more easily 1. Homeschooling doesn't have to mean you do all the teaching 2. It doesn't have to mean that you love to teach 3. I have many years of experience of managing and teaching dental care professionals who are undertaking Diploma programmes in relation to Oral Health, with a registrable qualifications as Dental Hygienists and Dental Therapists. I am also currently managing and teaching the Certificate in Oral Health Education programme, which is a distance learning programme, primarily targeted towards qualified Dental Nurses who wish to expand their knowledge and skills. In 2003 I was recognised as a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. I am a leading dental hygienist/therapist in the UK, with a substantial professional reputation gained over many years through working in collaboration with dental leaders and organisations. I was awarded the coveted title of ‘Hygienist of the Year’ in 2007 which is recognition by dental leaders. I work with a number of national organisations and professional bodies to promote dental hygienists and therapists both at undergraduate and post-registration level. I am a regular contributor to dental journals, particularly the Dental Health Journal, which is the the Journal of the British Society of Dental Hygiene and Therapy. His ENLIGHTEN approach to Real Estate Investing has allowed us to not only succeed financially but personally as well. Andy has not only served to brighten and help the lives of 274 people but also their families and now YOU! WHAT DO YOU TYPICALLY TELL PEOPLE WHEN THEY ASK YOU, “WHAT DO YOU DO?” Andy: That's so tough! That's so hard! Typically I say real estate stuff. Sometimes I'll tell then entrepreneur. Depends on how deep of a conversation I want to get in with people. Because no one really understands when I say “Real Estate Stuff” people will say, “Oh, so you're a Real Estate Agent.” And I typically follow up with, “Well, no I'm not an agent.” So sometimes I just say business things… business stuff… That “Real Estate stuff” has Andy doing 274 deals in 2017 alone totaling well over 7 Figures! Andy is a widely successful entrepreneur whose “business stuff” (beyond his massive wholesaling business) includes a being a TOP MENTOR at House Flipping HQ, a successful PPC business that helps drive other Real Estate Investment companies into being top in their markets and a super informational, funny and educational YouTube program at www.iloverealestatestories.com. WHY DO YOU DO THESE BUSINESS THINGS THAT YOU DO? Andy: It just started going and one thing leads to the next. I never tended to be on step 10, if I'm on step 10 now. I just started with step one and went on to step 2, 3, 4… and then you look up and you've kind of got into this thing. I'd be lying if I told you 15 years ago I wanted to have a digital marketing company, and I do rentals and I do loans … I didn't envision that. “You don't know what you don't know.” I just started with step one and it evolved into where we are today… I didn't plan this… HOW DOES ANDY PLAN FOR SUCCESS Andy: At the start of the year I set up my goals, personal and business. At the beginning of the week I line up some key strategic things I need to do that week. And then I push those to my days … the things I need to do that day go on my A, B, C list. ANDY'S PERSONAL AND BUSINESS GOALS!!! Andy's Personal Goals: -Increase my spiritual net worth -Study all scripture related to Jesus Christ Andy's Family Goals: -Scripture Study and Prayer with my wife every night -Unstructured break time for my wife so she can unwind -20 hours of FOCUSED and PRESENT time with my family per week -13 days of this year on a boat with my family -20 days of skiing with my family These are the things that are important to me. Here are the business goals… thats what you really want… Andy's Business Goal -My house buying and wholesaling company: I want to do 6 million Dollars of top line projected revenue -The digital marketing company: build and grow… ON VALUE AND THE JOURNEY We get so busy in the DOING that we forget to ENJOY THE JOURNEY… Be intentional about putting in those things that you said you wanted. Because you'll find yourself at the end of 10, 20, 30 years just looking up and you might have a pile of money but you missed your entire life. Because TIME is the one NON-RENEWABLE resource. The things that we get for free, ironically, we don't value. We take them lightly. The things that cost money… the houses, the cars and the vacations… we value those more. But really… what about your mind, what about the ability to hear, to see, to think, your friendships, your relationship with your family. It's free. ON GROWTH …As a person I'd like to think I'm always getting better. I'm always trying to refine who I am and what I do. And try to be less selfish and more selfless. Try to serve others… WHAT IS SUCCESS? We've got one objective and one priority. And our objective helps us get to our priority. Our number one objective is to make a profit. That's not necessarily success but your have to be profitable as a business and a company in order to hit your priorities… Our number one priority… is to … ENLIGHT. Because that means all these things to me… that we are to look, as a team, constantly bring light into our individual lives so that that light will impact the team members. We can bring that into the team environment.
