On this podcast recording I speak to Geoff Sharpe a periodontists from the UK currently living in Dubai. We speak extensively about the new periodontal classification. Dr. Geoffrey Sharpe grew up in the north of England and graduated from Newcastle University School of Dental Sciences in 1998 with distinction in Restorative Dentistry. After two years of General Professional Training, he achieved Membership of the Faculty of Dental Surgery of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow in 2000. He continued to work within the National Health Service as a Senior House Officer at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary and Manchester Royal Infirmary. He held positions in Restorative Dentistry and Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery before proceeding to full time general practice. In 2003, Dr. Sharpe returned to Newcastle University to start his specialist training in periodontics. He graduated with a Master of Science in Restorative Dentistry in 2005 and achieved Membership in Restorative Dentistry (Periodontics) at The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2007. Throughout this time, he continued to apply his periodontal skills in private practice as a visiting specialist at a number of clinics in the United Kingdom. In 2010, Dr. Sharpe was invited to join a renowned clinic in Dubai as their in-house periodontist. He held this role for seven years prior to creating The Perio Clinic in 2017. Until recently, he also held a part-time role at Mohammed Bin Rashid University in Dubai where he enjoyed teaching and mentoring the next generation of periodontists. Dr. Sharpe lives in Dubai with his wife, Kim, and their one-year old son, William.

It was such a pleasure speaking to them earlier this year. Debbie currently work in the coal face of dentistry with her husband Marius at their NHS and private clinics. She uses her full scope of practice and in particular is interested in skin and facial aesthetics and anti-ageing. Debbie has been a council member for over 13 years holding a variety of positions. She has always enjoyed the politics of dentistry and representing the profession. She states she has met some incredible people during her time with the BADT, and hope she can contribute more along her journey representing you our members. Debbie is also a temp chair of BAPD DCP group Debbie Hemington - BADT Chair. Debbie qualified from New Cross in 1983, the year it closed, and is actually the last New Cross Therapist to graduate. She qualified as a Hygienist at Kings in 1987 and has worked continuously during this time in a variety of settings. In 2003 she joined The Eastman as a tutor and combines that role with working in a mixed general practice where she has worked for 33 years! Debbie has also worked the for the former London Deanery as part of the DCP tutor team commissioning post graduate education, and was the educational lead on “Wild Smile” project with Heart your Smile. In 2012 she took part in a 2 year part time pilot scheme at Kings for Enhanced Skills in Peridontology. Debbie has been a BADT member for most of her career, and has been Treasurer of the London region for 15 years. She accepted the position of Chair 2 years ago and also represents BADT at the Dental Professionals Alliance meetings.
The poignant dental professional I had the pleasure of interviewing for this recording is Laura McClune who qualified from Kings in 2005 and has certainly had a very dynamic varied career path since qualifying. On todays show she speaks about her career path to date, and what she has learnt along the way, and how her choice of a masters has impacted her professionally and as a person. I hope you have as much fun listening to this podcast as we did recording it. Laura will certainly feed you with inspiration. This podcast was recorded at the beginning of the first lockdown prior to going on Furlough. Laura qualified as a dental hygienist from Kings College London in 2005. Since then she has worked in various dental practices within the South East. She is a keen advocate for continuing personal and professional development and has now completed her Master’s level qualification wih a Distinction, in Advanced and Specialist Healthcare from the University of Kent this year. Her dissertation is titled “The experiences of dental hygienists working with chairside dental nurse assistance within general dental practices in the South of England”. Laura is also now the current honourary treasurer for the BSDHT. In 2019 Laura started her role at Philips Healthcare and is now working as a dental Professional Educator and business manager. She delivers content around the subject of oral healthcare including the science of Sonicare technology and Zoom whitening treatments, to dental professionals online and previously both in practice, at conferences and seminars. In 2020 she launched a programme providing small group study clubs to new and soon to be qualified dental hygienist and therapists. A project which is ongoing. On todays show I had the absolute pleasure of speaking to Sarah Thomson a dental hygienists who shares her remarkable personal story about her recovery from alcoholism. She is an absolute inspiration and there are many lessons in this podcast recording for us all. Sarah I want to personally thank you for sharing all you have in this recording. Sarah initially qualified as a Dental Hygienist in 1989, but returned to Bristol Dental Hospital to qualify as a Dental Therapist in 2012. During her career she has worked in a number of different types of practices including a periodontal practice. Last year, to coincide with her 50th Birthday, she took her skills to Kenya where she volunteered with Dentaid and is due to go to Uganda with them again next year. Her 'me time' includes stand up paddle boarding, singing in a choir, yoga and park runs. Sarah is a recovering alcoholic and therefore has a vested interest in helping others who suffer, or who are heading towards alcoholism both inside and outside our profession. 1. Amber Ojak is currently a dental therapist in Edinburgh. She qualified from the University of Edinburgh in 2018 and has helped improve many patients oral health ever since. Amber is an ambassador of the BSDHT as well as a council member. She works on many projects with the society and has written many articles for their journal Dental Health. Amber also writes for other publications such as Dental Nursing, Dentistry Online and Oral Health magazine. She bases all her articles on her own experience and tries to give a voice to the younger generation of dentistry. Amber is a strong advocate for the profession. Amber has a great passion for helping people and has inspired many students going into the working world. She gives talks at different universities as well as communicating online.

In this podcast recording you will hear how Jennifer Thompson, a hygienist who currently works within 3 practices and has began a very interesting new business venture working from home, that is an opportunity for all dental professionals to become involved in if they wish. I am sure you are going to be very interested to learn what Jennifer talks about in our conversation. Jennifer began her profession at the age of 17 as a trainee dental nurse, not really understanding the opportunity or the role for that matter. She went on to qualify as a dental nurse and continued her education with post-registration qualifications before starting her education as a dental hygienist. It took four years before she was accepted onto the course, but she knew that it was what she wanted to do, so she never gave up. Jennifer qualified from the queen's university of Belfast in 2013 and was awarded 'Best overall student'. Although Jennifer currently works in 3 different practices and has worked in quite a few more throughout her career as a hygienist, she remain in the practice that she started in as a trainee dental nurse. The eminent dentist I had the pleasure of interviewing for this recording is Mark Cronshaw, who has held the position of Professor at the University of Genoa in Italy since 2014, where he teaches the advanced masters in science course, in oral laser applications, and is a co-director of the international “Dental Laser Training Academy Ltd” to name a few positions, and is actively involved in clinical research on laser tissue interaction. Rachael England a Hygienist who currently works for the FDI World Dental Federation as an Education and Public Health Manager. "Rachael England joined the Royal Air Force in 1999 as a Dental Nurse, in 2004 she began training as a Dental Hygienist at the Defence Dental Agency in Aldershot, U.K. Rachael served until 2008, when she relocated to Windsor to work in private practice. In 2013 an opportunity arose to work in Dubai, where Rachael relished the opportunity to join dental public health initiatives and later was accepted as President of Emirates Dental Hygienists Club. During this time, she studied for a Master of Public Health and graduated with Merit in 2018. Following which she felt the need to expand her skills outside of the dental surgery and accepted a role as a Research Dental Hygienist on the British Regional Heart Study, spending six months gathering the dental data of men aged over 75 across the U.K. In February 2019 Rachael joined FDI World Dental Federation as an Education and Public Health Manager. Rachael first visited Kenya in 2015 as a dental volunteer and went on to found the registered charity Maasai Molar (www.maasaimolar.org), who provide dental care and oral health education to communities in the Maasai Mara, Kenya." maasaimolar@gmail.com
