Quick personal update here. This year, I have been telling people that I am living my best life. During COVID and even beyond, I feel like I was holding back just a little bit and not really going for it. By going for it, I mean take the trip, eat the gelato, make the call, take the action. Yes, I was making an effort, but a little bit of my magic was missing, and I felt like I needed to get it back.Well, as we are coming to mid-year in 2024, I've got my mojo back, baby! And I'm going for it. I'm taking trips I've always wanted to take. I'm taking bolder and braver action, just like I teach my coaching clients. And you know what? It feels so good! So, it feels appropriate that today's guest is just as motivating and inspirational. When I met Vera Quinn, my guest today, I felt like a fire was lit underneath me. I love Vera's energy, grit, and perseverance. She is a woman who achieves her goals, but also gives back, which is inspiring to see. I'm sure you will be inspired by Vera's personal story of her road to CEO, just like I was. During our conversation, Vera and I chatted about:Why perseverance and drive are the backbone of who Vera isVera's personal and professional values and why they are the underpinning of everything she has done in her careerWhat strategic and people-centered leadership are and how Vera has used these principles to become the CEO of CydcorThe book that Vera has been reading for 23 years in a row and whyWe also touched on the foundation that she runs called the MyTQuinn Foundation, which is an amazing story in and of itself

Today we're talking about how to handle the spotlight as a Christian in sports, because whether you realize it or not, being an athlete comes with some level of notoriety no matter what country or culture you may find yourself in. You can be a high school athlete or you could be suiting up to play in the NFL or the Premier League, but at some level you're going to have to learn how to represent Christ while on the stage of your sport. That is why today I invited on University of Wisconsin football player Darryl Peterson. Darryl plays in front of tens of thousands of people every single week in the fall, and it is clear to me and everyone who watches him that he is a force on that field. It is also clear who he is portraying in Christ. This month, the OneHaas podcast is highlighting first-generation alumni like Carolina Picazo. She's the Chief Administrative Officer and Chief Compliance Officer at Spectrum Equity – a private equity firm focused on growth capital for internet-enabled software and information services companies. Before Spectrum Equity, Carolina spent 15 years at Deloitte working in tax services. Even as a child growing up in a Mexican immigrant family in San Francisco, she always had an affinity for numbers. That passion only grew in her accounting classes at Haas. Carolina and host Sean Li discuss her parents' immigration story from Mexico, why she initially hid her college applications from her father, and how she went from taxes to now holding a top executive job at Spectrum Equity. *OneHaas Alumni Podcast is a production of Haas School of Business and is produced by University FM.*Episode Quotes:On why she was drawn to a career in accounting Math was a strong suit of mine. You know English was harder for people like me whose parents don't speak fluent English or speak conversational fluent, but not super fluent, not a large vocabulary. So it's a lot harder. So, you know, you tend to go towards what you feel you're good at, right? Her first impression of classes at Haas My high school was crazy. It's even crazy now. It's a pressure cooker place. The whole time you feel like you're not good enough. When I went to Berkeley and I took classes, I felt like I belonged. I felt like I was prepared, and it wasn't a crazy pressure cooker situation. How her mom views her careerWhat makes her happy is the fact that I am an independent, self-reliant woman who is financially successful.I think that to her as a woman that grew up in the ‘50s and ‘60s, having a daughter who isn't dependent on someone else is really important to her. The other thing she says she's very proud of is the fact that I have three children who are successful. My youngest daughter is 19. But she's successful. I mean, my mom views her as successful. And she's like the continuation. She's like, ‘You did your career and you did all that, but you were able to balance raising three daughters who in and of themselves can be independent and strong and successful women.' She said, ‘That's not easy. And that's all you.The advice she gives her daughtersIt's a very long life after you graduate, and you need to feel like you have the tools to do something that satisfies you. Reality is you can't live without earning a paycheck, so find a way to earn a paycheck. And find a way to do it with something that makes you happy and makes you feel like you are intellectually satisfied.Show Links:LinkedIn ProfileSpectrum Equity BioSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/onehaas/donations
Fancy Scientist: A Material Girl Living in a Sustainable World
Navigating career paths can be a daunting challenge. We pour our time and effort into applications, only to be met with rejection after rejection. Many aspiring wildlife professionals can relate to the frustration and self-doubt that arise from these setbacks. In the pursuit of our dreams and career goals, we often find ourselves facing moments of self-doubt and uncertainty. Thoughts of inadequacy and imposter syndrome can quietly seep in, casting doubts on our abilities and leaving us feeling hopeless when we don't get the outcomes we want. But in the face of these challenges, one of the most valuable lessons we can learn is the importance of not giving up. Today on the Fancy Scientist Podcast, I interviewed Nicole Blankertz, park ranger with Michigan State Parks, and alumni of my Successful Wildlife Professional. Nicole didn't expect to become a park ranger, in fact, she was determined to become a wildlife researcher, but she struggled to get positions when the pandemic changed her plans. Nicole's path was far from smooth sailing - it included setbacks and self-doubt that would have caused many to throw in the towel. Nicole graduated in 2020 and had an internship lined up, which got canceled because of COVID. She applied to other jobs but didn't get any. Just rejection after rejection. All of these rejections led to some imposter syndrome and frustration and she knew things had to change. She made a big decision and enrolled in the The Successful Wildlife Professional program so that we could work together to get her interviews. Through learning from the program and personal mentoring from me, we improved Nicole's job application and things changed dramatically. We focused only on her job application without adding a single new experience, skill, certification, etc. We just emphasized and demonstrated the experience she already had. Nicole also decided to apply for some jobs outside of the realm of wildlife research. The outcome of all of this? A life-changing position with the parks department, proving that a strategy and persistent mindset can unlock unexpected possibilities. In this episode, we talk about what it's like to work as a park ranger and how Nicole is keeping the possibility of working in wildlife research again open. So, if you're wrestling with imposter syndrome or feel like giving up, this episode is for you! Get ready to be inspired, motivated, and armed with the tools to conquer your own self-doubt. When you believe in yourself, refuse to give up, and take action, there's no limit to what you can achieve. Specifically, we discussed:How to revamp your job application and enhance your chances of getting hiredThe unwavering importance of persistence in the face of rejectionThe significance of non-wildlife jobs and transferable skills in attaining your dream wildlife careerWhat it's like to work as a park ranger and in the park serviceKey considerations to understand when contemplating a career changeAnd much more, including invaluable GREEN FLAGS to guide you in pursuing your dream career in wildlife biology!I'm Dr. Stephanie Manka (formerly Schuttler), a wildlife biologist of nearly 20 yrs with 20+ peer-reviewed scientific publications, author of the book Getting a Job in Wildlife Biology: What It's Like and What You Need to Know (https://www.amazon.com/Getting-Job-Wildlife-Biology-What/dp/B08JDYXS4G/) and founder of Fancy Scientist. Quitting your job is a big decision and it doesn't always lead to the perfect outcome—at least not immediately. Most people think that you have to be miserable or make very little money to want to quit a job, but even high earners still find themselves struggling to attend their nine-to-fives. Pat Hiban is the perfect example. He quit during his prime even as he was making a high income and after owning his own company. Regardless of all the respect, responsibility, and ability to make phenomenal income, it just wasn't enough for Pat.You may be feeling the same. Maybe you're daydreaming about multifamily investing as you sit at work, or picturing the perfect vacation rental property on your commute. Whatever your reason, quitting might be the best move for you to make, but only if it's the right time. Don't worry if you're struggling with decision fatigue, Pat and fellow quitter Tim Rhode just came out with their newest book, The Quitter's Manifesto: Quit a Job You Hate for the Work You Love.In it, Pat and Tim give stories and tools that will help you on your path to building wealth while leaving a job that you hate. The resources you'll find in this book are exactly what our very own David Greene used when deciding to quit his highly lucrative, but mentally draining job as a police officer. If you've been sitting on the fence, not knowing the next step to take in your career, this book may be exactly what you need.In This Episode We Cover:How to quit your job and start investing in real estate full-timeThe five factors of a soul-sucking job and how to evaluate whether or not it's time to jump shipFinding the "quitter's trapeze” that can help you transition from W-2 to self-employed workerBuilding your team of quitters who will hold you accountable and take you to the next level of your careerWhat it looks like when you're ready to quit and how to emotionally prepare for the impactAnd So Much More!Links from the ShowBiggerPockets Youtube ChannelBiggerPockets ForumsBiggerPockets Pro MembershipBiggerPockets BookstoreBiggerPockets BootcampsBiggerPockets PodcastGet Your Ticket for BPCon 2022Listen to All Your Favorite BiggerPockets Podcasts in One PlaceLearn About Real Estate, The Housing Market, and Money Management with The BiggerPockets PodcastsGet More Deals Done with The BiggerPockets Investing ToolsFind a BiggerPockets Real Estate Meetup in Your AreaDavid's BiggerPockets ProfileDavid's InstagramRob's BiggerPockets ProfileRob's YoutubeRob's InstagramRob's TikTokRob's TwitterBiggerPockets Podcast 190 with PatBiggerPockets Podcast 353 with TimHear David's Real Estate Origin Story on The “BiggerPockets Money Podcast”10 Challenges to Seriously Consider BEFORE Quitting Your Day JobBooks Mentioned in the Show:6 Steps to 7 Figures by Pat HibanThe Quitter's Manifesto by Tim Rhode and Pat HibanConnect with Pat & Tim:Pat's LinkedInPat's BiggerPockets ProfileTim's WebsiteTim's LinkedInClick here to check the full show notes: https://www.biggerpockets.com/blog/real-estate-648Interested in learning more about today's sponsors or becoming a BiggerPockets partner yourself?
