Newmarket's Broadway precinct has in the past been a go to for shoppers. About five years ago it even got a brand new upmarket Westfield mall, but still had a mix of one off boutiques and stores including Karen Walker and Kate Sylvester, on the main strip and surrounding streets. Now there are multiple ghost shops on Broadway, displaying signage of stores that no longer exist and with a heavy sprinkling of "for lease" signs. Mark Knoff Thomas from the Newmarket Business Association spoke to Lisa Owen.

Inside the iCloud Trail That Exposed Lori Vallow: Divine Missions, Dead Bodies, and a Deleted Husband “So the Plot Thickens” Charles Vallow was already dead when his brother-in-law Alex Cox finally decided to call 911. That call didn't come until 8:36 a.m., and Charles had been lying on the floor for at least 47 minutes by then. Lori Vallow, his wife, had already left the house by 7:49 a.m.—taking Charles' phone with her—and she never made a call for help. Not on her phone, not on his. Nothing. Just silence. The whole scene, the timing, the calls—or lack thereof—was outlined by Chandler Police Detective Nathan Duncan as he testified about what they found when they started pulling data from Lori's iCloud and Charles' phone. Turns out, the dead man's device was still being used hours after he was killed. The texts Adam Cox sent to his brother Charles that morning were read promptly—until they weren't. Suddenly, the messages stopped being opened. Then, at 12:13 p.m., they were read. Charles had been dead for hours by then. So who was reading them? The breadcrumbs didn't stop there. Duncan found that Alex Cox had sent Lori the flight itinerary for Adam's trip after Charles died, but the message was sent using Charles' phone. That's like borrowing someone's toothbrush after they've been buried. Adam, meanwhile, was desperately trying to reach Alex—texting and calling—once he got into Phoenix on July 10. No reply. At all. Then came the iCloud accounts—two of them: “lollytime” and “lori4style.” These accounts were a goldmine of encrypted nonsense and unsettling revelations. Lori had flown to Idaho in March 2019 and returned with Chad Daybell the same month. Around that same time, there was an odd email supposedly from Charles inviting Chad to Houston to write a book. Only problem? Charles didn't send it. Lori did. She made a fake email account under the name Karen Walker and used her own old phone number to set it up. By June 27, the messages between Charles and Lori had all but dried up. Their marriage was clearly fractured, but not in a normal marital spat kind of way. This was nuclear. Charles was living in Houston, but he still helped Lori move into the Phoenix rental on June 22. That lease was supposed to run until 2022. On July 10, he flew into town. He was planning an intervention. He had been talking with Lori's brother Adam about it. They were going to try to bring Lori back to reality, whatever that even looked like anymore. Too bad Lori already knew. She had texted Alex around 9:50 p.m. the night before Charles died saying, “Getting sleepy. So I'm going to need you to stay close to me the next few days. Mel too. She can't go to Utah. They are planking (sic) some kind of intervention…Lots to do. Thank you for standing by me. It's all coming to a head this week. I will be like Nephi I am told! And so will you.” That's a reference to a Book of Mormon figure known for killing a man to obtain sacred records. Light bedtime reading, apparently. The “Nephi” text came just after Lori messaged Alex, “So the plot thickens. Call me when u can.” That was July 8. By July 11, Charles was dead. Lori and Alex weren't just texting about scripture and divine missions. They were deep in a parallel universe where Charles wasn't Charles anymore. He was “Ned,” a dark spirit that had taken over his body. In February and March, Lori told Alex that Ned had been at the temple looking for him. She said Tylee “unleashed on him.” She even asked, “No one has seen him, right? Just talked to him??” As if Charles was a missing ghost in a body suit. Then there's the money. Lori sent pictures of Charles' life insurance policy to a contact named “Bubby,” along with documentation showing she was the beneficiary. But there was also a picture showing that Kay Woodcock, Charles' sister, had been made the new beneficiary. That change had been made by Charles. Lori wasn't thrilled. On July 12—the day after Charles was killed—Lori texted about going to Social Security. Because when someone dies, the paperwork party begins. When detectives entered the home on July 11, they found Charles' body face up on the western side of a mostly empty room. There was a bat nearby, but no blood splatter on the walls or floor—just a little blood on Charles' left hand, suggesting he had placed it on his chest after being shot. The bullet? It went through his body and left a visible strike in the floor. Duncan cut that piece out for evidence. Alex claimed he was injured in the scuffle, but no one saw any wounds that morning. Later, during the investigation, they learned he had a cut on the back of his head. Even the gun he used—registered to him—had no blood on it. Inside the house, they found an orange duffle bag with a Health Savings Account card labeled Alex Cox. There were extra magazines inside. The kitchen faucet had a smear of blood, but no towels, no evidence of cleanup. It's like everyone knew Charles was going to die that day—except Charles. #LoriVallow #CharlesVallow #TrueCrimePodcast #DaybellCase Want to listen to ALL our podcasts AD-FREE? This week on The Business of Open Source I had a slightly different conversation: I spoke with the CFOs of two open source companies, Sysdig and Percona, to better understand what is different (and what is not) about financial management in open source companies. Karen Walker is the CFO at Sysdig, and Eileen Doody is the CFO at Percona. They both joined me to talk about the CFO role in general and the CFO role in particular at an open source company. Why did I do this episode? Many founders I've spoken with are a bit unclear on the role of a CFO — whereas I've never spoken with a founder who had trouble understanding what their CTO does. Here's some takeaways from our conversation: Part of the CFO's role is about thinking about open source strategically, in terms of how the open source project is going to fit into the company's overall strategy.Because open source is so ingrained in the company, it doesn't fit into a single budget line item; it's impossible to break out and say ‘we spend $X on open source' because it's so integrated into everything the company doesHow do you measure your ROI on investment in open source? At Sysdig, two out of three prospects come to the company because of Falco, their open source project. We also talked about the ecosystem effects of having a huge footprint with your open source project; it's hard to measure the positive influence of having massive brand awareness, but both CFOs are convinced that it is very important to the company. Eileen says that many CIOs now have mandates to look for open source solutions when possible, which was not the case a decade ago. That's changed the dynamic for a company like Percona that's based around open source. Another reason I did this episode is because while I usually have founders on the podcast, there are some really important perspectives from other leadership team members. Part of the the role of a CEO is to understand all the other C-level leadership position's roles and responsibilities, and in my experience the CFO is one of the less well understood roles. In fact, we wrapped up the conversation by talking about how a CFO can be a real strategic partner that's forward-thinking rather than just the bean-counter that some people expect a CFO to be. A couple things to mention. First of all, if you want to learn more about my consulting work with open source companies, you can do so here. Second, if you want to chance to connect with other founders of open source companies, consider joining Open Source Founders Summit this May 19th and 20th in Paris.

Like many of her CFO peers, Karen Walker had an early career that was guided by abundant opportunities surrounding finance-driven decision-making within organizations. It was a path that often led Walker to engage more closely with sales and operations, as was the case at CNET Networks, where she tells us that she recognized the limitations of embracing a strictly “rules-based” approach in finance. It was at CNET that she embraced a more transformative perspective—prioritizing the customer's objectives and challenges. This shift in thinking, emphasizing a customer mind-set, would continue as she advanced in her career. At PagerDuty, the philosophy became instrumental in addressing the company's rapid growth challenges. Now, as CFO at Sysdig, Walker tell us that it's this commitment to understanding customer needs that guides the company's approach to cloud security. Her journey reflects a progressive integration of customer-centricity into financial leadership, showcasing its adaptability and efficacy in diverse business environments. Says Walker: “I think that one of the things that I have really learned over the years—and espouse as a philosophy—is that every employee—which includes, of course, finance—should really have a customer mind-set and really put the customer at the center of every decision that is made.”

Ever wondered how executive coaching can be the secret sauce for CEOs and senior leaders to not just survive but thrive in the whirlwind of hypergrowth? Join us in this episode with the incredible Karen Walker, an esteemed executive coach and consultant renowned for her expertise in guiding CEOs and senior leaders through the challenges of hypergrowth. With an impressive portfolio that includes advising industry giants like Aetna, AWS, Pfizer, JPMorganChase, and BMC Software, as well as nurturing Inc. 5000 startups, Karen brings a wealth of experience to our conversation. Karen's journey is marked by significant milestones, notably her pivotal role as employee 104 at Compaq, where she contributed to transforming the company into the then-fastest growing entity in American history, propelling it from $0 to $15 billion in revenue. In our discussion, Karen talks about the challenges and dynamics of hypergrowth companies, emphasizing the importance of alignment with investors, a growth-oriented culture, and a high tolerance for ambiguity. Also she introduces a powerful tool — a 2x2 matrix — to simplify complex situations and facilitate strategic conversations, discussing the significance of executive presence and technical skills, highlighting the different personas within each quadrant of the matrix.Join us in this episode as Karen Walker shares her invaluable insights on navigating hypergrowth, leadership, and organizational development. Get ready for a conversation that promises to be both enlightening and transformative. Stay tuned!Episode Quotes:A new chapter in a book: Karen's unexpected path into coaching and consultingAnd I had, as part of the leadership team, a big global job. It wasn't very big when I joined, but it got bigger and I loved it. I really loved that environment. And when I left at the size it was, it was just like another big company. And at least for me, it wasn't a place I wanted to spend the rest of my working life. So I took some time out to figure out what I really missed. And I missed putting together high performing teams and making them clear what they're doing, why they're doing it and the stuff that gets in the way. And it's almost never the technical stuff. It is almost always people's process and tools. And, you know, I'm an industrial engineer, so efficiency is sort of part of my DNA and I went back to Columbia. I did their ODHRM programs, I got the theory behind the practice that I knew. And I've been working with CEOs and senior leaders and leadership teams now for the past two decades, primarily in the tech space. I've also worked with a number of Fortune 500 companies, but I'd say my sweet spot tends to be tech.Elevate or stagnate: No Dumbing DownA team can only work at the level of the lowest performing member. And what tends to happen when we put teams together is people come in with different levels of expertise, different goals that can often be misaligned, different resources that they're able to bring to bear. And if most of the team is able to perform at this level, but you've got one team member who, for whatever reason, often not their own fault, can only perform at this level, time, resources, skill level, the team can only perform here, right? Because the team by definition is only going to be successful in their interdependence, so the team has to dumb down. Well, what happens when that occurs? The team is not able to work to its true potential, right, and the organization isn't as well. And so you want a team to pay attention to how they operate, not just what they're doing, which you obviously live as well. But how they operate, how they are chartered, how do they debrief what's going on, how do they make sure that they're aligned in their goals and their ability to hold each other accountable. The critical pillars of hypergrowth successI think the first thing and part of what makes the hypergrowth company successful, we obviously have a product market fit and it's what happens after you find your product market fit. Do you have an investor who is aligned with your vision of where you want to go? Because that is a huge, huge issue if there's no alignment there. Do you have a culture in your organization that is set up to continue this cycle of hypergrowth? Everybody on the team has to be signed up for the sort of effort that it takes to keep that wheel spinning. The other thing that is so important for working in a hypergrowth company, you have to have a great tolerance for ambiguity and a bias for action. And those are things that are hard for people - to be able to live with the unknown. And so if you're not okay with ambiguity, you will fail. And then of course the bias fraction has to be there in any growth-oriented company.Navigating the interplay of executive presence and technical skills in a 2x2 matrixAny executive is in a situation where they are living in a complex world and simplification is often the greatest need. And so a 2x2 matrix will not solve all the world's problems, but it will give us a framework for talking about what's going on. So the two axes are executive presence and technical skills, right? And as someone who does coaching, often there's a tension between those two. So if we start in the upper left-hand corner, this is someone with high executive presence but low technical skills. I call that “fake it till you make it”. But you aren't an “empty suit”, which is what can happen if you only have executive presence, but you don't really have the skills. In the bottom left-hand corner, which is low executive presence and low technical skill, I call this “get to work”. You need one of these skill sets or the other, or you're not going to last in any organization. The bottom right-hand corner. So this is someone with high technical skills, low executive presence. And so these are people who often get coaching, because they're moving into areas where they need to have the executive presence, but they've been really successful at the company technically. And the upper right-hand quadrant. I label it “the sky's the limit”. This is someone with a strong executive presence and strong technical skills. So the challenge there is to keep growing and developing, because that is someone who's truly a high-potential, high-performer in an organization.Show Links:Official WebsiteKaren's book No Dumbing Down: A No-Nonsense Guide for CEOs on Organization GrowthKaren Walker on InstagramKaren Walker on LinkedinKaren Walker on Twitter

That said, they each share a passion and history of highest ethics throughout their careers and a passion for helping others succeed. The Mentors Radio original hosts: L to R, Ric Brutocao, John Phillips and Tom Loarie Tom Loarie began work as a brick layer to earn money while in school but he is most known for a stellar career in the life sciences field, as a start-up CEO for a number of companies, some of whose medical devices have saved lives and reversed the course of serious disease. He is currently the start-up CEO of Silicon Valley-based Bryologyx, developing a new class of drugs to enhance the response rates and treatment durability of cancer immunotherapies. Ric Brutocao hails primarily from the tech arena, ultimately launching and eventually selling his own company. He also has served as a remarkable CEO, President and Executive leader in a number of other companies including the international luxury appliance company DACOR, at least one winery, an Italy-based yacht company and too many others to list. The founder of DACOR once noted that "Ric is the best operational manager I've ever seen." Ric currently serves as managing partner of Laguna Hills, CA-based Venture Financial Partners. John Phillips, Jr. co-founded with his wife, Mary, what has become one of the largest stained glass companies in the world, Associated Crafts® & Willet Hauser® Stained Glass Studio. He grew up in the industry, often accompanying his father on stained glass sales or follow-up visits. Then he worked in the industry, learning all aspects of the craft and business. By the time he and his wife launched their own stained glass company, John was already a sought-after industry expert. But he added a fresh, new level of technology and automation that enabled them to deliver superior customer experience and a superior satisfaction guarantee. People noticed. The quality of their craftsmanship, the superb customer communications, employee training and efficient problem-solving quickly set their company apart from others. And, John remained a go-to friend, helper and advisor in the facility management, stained glass and related industries when peers sought help. His drive for excellence paid off. Within 15 short years of launching their business, one of the largest legacy stained glass firms in the country—over 100 years old—invited John to consider acquiring their company. The rest is history. Now John and Mary own and run Associated Crafts® & Willet Hauser® Stained Glass Studio. In this episode of The Mentors Radio, you'll get first-hand, real-world insights into how to run a successful business, regardless of industry or experience. It's raw and real and a lot of fun to learn from these three Master Mentors!

Lau and Rich return to talk all things women. This episode was recorded the week of International Women's Day during March aka Women's History Month. And especially since Hello Adorn is stacked with fantastic, extraordinary, inspirational women, they just had to get into it. Lau shares interesting stats, personal stories and observations, tactics to navigate a note yet equal world, and more about the female experience. That plus they share lots of great recs, from other great female-owned brands and businesses to music artists. Rich attempts to learn and falls flat on his face a few times along the way. It is what learning in public looks like. But make no mistake, it is loaded with laughs, quizzes, and nonsense. ....Noted in the ep:Jewelry:Femme Necklace: https://www.helloadorn.com/products/femme-necklace.Inspirational women owned businesses:Hello Adorn: https://www.helloadorn.com/Food52: https://food52.com/Little Stranger Productions: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Little_Stranger_(company)Karen Walker: https://www.karenwalker.com/Saddest Factory Records: https://saddestfactoryrecords.com/Venntov: https://venntov.com/Sister Golden: https://sistergolden.com/Heyday Bozeman: https://heydaybozeman.com/Tree Fairfax: https://treefairfax.com/Racehl Burke: https://shoprachelburke.com/Pure Bliss Home Decor: https://www.instagram.com/pureblisshomedecorDotters Books: https://dottersbooks.com/.Music:Phoebe Bridgers: https://phoebefuckingbridgers.com/Haim: http://haimtheband.com/Brandi Carlile: https://www.brandicarlile.com/Amanda Shire: https://amandashiresmusic.com/Audrey Nuna: http://audreynuna.com/Jasmine Sullivan: https://www.jazminesullivanmusic.com/Dua Lipa: https://www.dualipa.com/Leon Bridges: https://www.leonbridges.com/Chelsea Cutler: https://www.chelseacutler.com/

Libby Lou's resemblance to the Will & Grace character Karen Walker is striking and when someone suggested it in her comments section, she ran with it! Libby herself has over a decade of sobriety under her belt, which makes this combination even more funny! Starting out as a “sober hype mom”, she still dedicates much of her time to recognizing and celebrating fellow non-drinkers' achievements. This mix of gratitude, humility and comedy make for a page that we can't resist and highly recommend. Sit back, grab the olives, and enjoy our chat with Libby Lou!
