Welcome to the Doulas Uncensored Podcast! Join hosts Sammy Griffin and Moran Liviani as they embark on this journey of exploration, education, and empowerment. In this episode, Sammy and Moran talk to Sharon Stoliar. Sharon Stoliar is a highly experienced midwife, researcher, and advocate dedicated to exposing the failures within maternity care. As the president of the Maternity Consumer Network in Australia, she played a key role in the recent Birth Trauma Inquiry, working to highlight the mistreatment and systemic failures that many women experience in the healthcare system. She is also the author of Scars of Gold, a powerful memoir detailing her personal experience with birth trauma and her journey into advocacy. But Sharon's advocacy goes beyond birth—she was one of the few voices to call out systemic antisemitism within the healthcare system, raising the alarm about discrimination faced by Jewish healthcare workers and patients. Instead of being heard, she was cancelled by the birth world and ignored and penalised by the regulating body, AHPRA. This episode is controversial for good reason. We're diving into birth trauma, the fight for maternity reform, and the hidden biases—including antisemitism—that are often swept under the rug in healthcare. Buckle up—this is a conversation that challenges the status quo. Sharon's book recommendation are: Gifted Hands by Dr Ben Carson And one of the most famous books of all time; The Bible and references her inspirations being two powerful women in the bible being Ruth & Esther. You can find Sharon on Instagram as well as on her blog and through the Maternity Consumer Network. So, sit back, relax, and let's uncover the untold stories, insights, and wisdom together on Doulas Uncensored. In our new 'Industry Updates' we'll bring you up to speed about news and reactions to pressing and important issues. These episodes will be published ad hoc and as soon as we can get them out. They do not replace our regular Friday podcasts and will be titled differently to help differentiate them. Chapter 3 of our Industry Updates hosted Jason McHeyzer, National Director of AHPRA (Australian Health Practitioner Regulatory Agency). With regulations very much in the Australian headlines yet again, we delve into the complexities of regulation within the cosmetic industry. We aim to clear up the confusion surrounding AHPRA's role and its efforts to ensure a safe and fair practice environment - for both our patients and the practitioners. Jason elaborates on the balance between patient safety and ethical practice. We get the regulators perspective on what sparked their clamp down on cosmetic surgery and with it, non-surgical cosmetic treatments. The discussion also covers the process of handling complaints behind the scenes, the importance of practitioner competence, and we briefly touch on future pending regulations on cosmetic injectables later this year. Important Context: Some of the changes I discuss in this episode aren't officially announced or reflected on the NDIS website. However, feedback from a large number of parents who completed my survey suggests these changes are happening as the NDIS plans are reviewed or when new applications go in. There is a huge amount of inconsistency within the NDIS with unclear definitions and varying levels of expertise from NDIS planners who make eligibility decisions. Providers are witnessing these issues firsthand, but some remain silent out of fear that speaking up could jeopardise their AHPRA registration, Medicare provider number, and the careers they've worked tirelessly to build. While the National Autism Strategy offers exciting long-term initiatives, many families are telling me through my survey that they're struggling right now with reduced funding, shifting eligibility criteria, and the emotional toll of navigating these changes. What this episode covers:NDIS Reforms: What parents are saying about how these changes are affecting their children's access to supports. The National Autism Strategy: Why it's a positive step forward but doesn't address the immediate needs of families.Early Intervention Gaps: How families are being left without support during a critical stage of development.Stories from Parents: Real experiences shared through my survey, highlighting the challenges and confusion around these changes.Advocating for Change: What we can do together to push for transparency and better support. What you can do:Share Your Story: Add your experience to my survey or join the conversation in the ADHD Mums Facebook Group.Write to Your Local MP: Advocate for clearer communication and better support for families.Spread Awareness: Share this episode and discuss these issues with your community. If you'd like to read more:Summary of NDIS Changes on 3rd October 2024 can be found HERE and I have a free resource HERE.Early Intervention Requirements FAQ linked HEREADHD Mums Jotform Survey is HERE JOIN THE COMMUNITY:Have questions or want to connect with other ADHD mums? These new rules affect both surgeons and non-surgical practitioners and come into force on July 1st 2023.  For years there have been arguments between the various cosmetic stakeholders over which practitioners have the right to treat patients, who can and can't offer the various procedures and heated debates over the standards expected of cosmetic practioners. Last year's enquiry by AHPRA into cosmetic surgery led to a full scale review of all cosmetic procedures. This has culminated in a set of sweeping new regulations - and some have voiced that it's a self-inflicted wound on an industry that couldn't govern itself. The new rules have left many in the industry confused and extremely unhappy about what is proposed, arguing that it neither improves patient safety whilst also significantly impacting on practitioners livelihoods. We explore: Our guests backgrounds Who AHPRA are The background to how and why these new guidelines have come about Why the proposals are such a major shakeup for the cosmetic industry The new surgical requirements including: The need for GP referral to be seen by a plastic surgeon The need for two consultations prior to surgery The need for a cooling off period before surgery The need for the psychological assessment of patients Significant changes to how social media can be used by plastic surgeons The new non-surgical requirements including: Changes to the consent process including explicit financial consent and supplying patients with a copy of the document The requirement for injectors to assess patients for body dysmorphic disorder The back and forth rulings and position statements regarding the role of different grades of nurses including enrolled nurses & nurse practitioners In a first for Inside Aesthetics, we are calling on ALL stakeholders, practitioners, injectors, clinic owners, those who work in the industry and the public to give their opinion on what they think of the new proposed guidelines. Dr Jereth Kok - Cancelled by AHPRA for Posting Memes

It is Discernable®

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 1, 2023 95:39

For 4 years Dr Jereth Kok has been suspended from practising medicine for posting memes, satire, and other Christian religious opinions on social media. Many of these posts centred around transgenderism, sexuality and abortion. The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) used an emergency mechanism reserved for use on dangerous doctors who represent a risk to 'the public interest'. Suspended without trial or hearing has meant 4 years of 'legal limbo' for Dr Kok who has been found neither guilty nor innocent by AHPRA. He has since been forced to retrain into an alternative career, so regardless of the eventual tribunal outcome he is unlikely to return to medicine. AHPRA have disclosed that their investigation began when they received 2 anonymous complaints about Dr Jereth Kok's social media posts, and that those two complainants have never been his patients. In this interview we explored the offences alleged by AHPRA, using AHPRA screenshots of Dr Kok's social media posts. Most of them are inarguably absurd, satire, or vanilla statements and the remaining are expositions of his Christian views. We went on to discuss the dangerous reality being set by bodies like AHPRA in censoring doctors and homogenising the ideology of the entire industry, resulting in anti-scientific practices that ignores long-established principles of modern medicine. Thank you for tuning in for another episode of Life's Best Medicine. Gary Fettke is an orthopedic surgeon who was officially sanctioned in 2016 by the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency (AHPRA) for low-carb dietary recommendations he made to patients. He was effectively silenced by the AHPRA after years of harassment, and he and his wife were forced to defend themselves despite the fact that no incident of patient harm nor patient complaint was ever identified. Belinda is Gary's wife and is a national/international speaker and researcher challenging plant-based dietary guidelines shaped by vested interests and ideologies. In this discussion, Brian, Gary, and Belinda talk about Gary and Belinda's four and a half year battle with the AHPRA, the steady rise in popularity of the low-carb nutritional approach to health, the failure of modern medical education, how scientific knowledge is supposed to naturally change and evolve over time, taking a stand for what is right in the face of overwhelming opposition, the necessity of having support from family and friends in the face of such opposition, treating all people with respect, why doctors ought to be primarily  teachers, and what factors determine what is considered correct and what is considered to be misinformation. Life's Best Medicine According to Belinda: “Community, being married to this guy, and having people around you that you can trust.” Life's Best Medicine According to Gary: “Enjoy life and don't waste opportunity. We have incredible privilege and there are vast populations of the planet that don't have these privileges, the resources, or the opportunity. So I get frustrated by those people who have the opportunity but don't embrace it. Part of that embracing is to share your good fortune.” Thank you for listening.
