Max Pearson presents a collection of the week's Witness History interviews from the BBC World Service. We discuss the 1992 speech given by Australian Prime Minister, Paul Keating, in which he acknowledged the moral responsibility his government should bear for the horrors committed against Indigenous Australians, with our guest Dr Rebe Taylor from Tasmania University. We also look at two female orators from opposite ends of the political spectrum: Eva Peron, also known as Evita, from right-wing Argentina and Dolores Ibárruri, who was a communist and anti-fascist fighter in the Spanish Civil War. There are also two speeches from the USA, one which is remembered as one of the great presidential speeches of all time and another which help to change the view of AIDS in the country.Contributors: Don Watson - who wrote Paul Keating's Redfern speech in 1992.Dr Rebe Taylor - Australian historian from the University of Tasmania.Archive of Eva Peron - former first lady of Argentina. Eva Peron – otherwise known as Evita - became an icon in 1940s Argentina, famous for her passionate speeches and populist rhetoric. Born into poverty, she moved to Buenos Aries at the age of 15 to become an actress, and was soon starring in radio soap operas. In 1945, she married Colonel Juan Peron, a rising figure in the Argentinian military, and supported his campaign to become president. After he won the election, she set up the Eva Perón Foundation, to distribute money, food and medicines to the poor. It won her the adulation of Argentina's working classes, although some believed she exploited her position for personal gain.Eva fell ill with cancer, and on 17 October 1951, she made her last major public appearance from the presidential palace balcony. It was to be her most famous speech, later inspiring the award-winning song, Don't Cry for Me Argentina, from the musical Evita.Eye-witness accounts brought to life by archive. Witness History is for those fascinated by the past. We take you to the events that have shaped our world through the eyes of the people who were there. For nine minutes every day, we take you back in time and all over the world, to examine wars, coups, scientific discoveries, cultural moments and much more. Recent episodes explore everything from football in Brazil, the history of the ‘Indian Titanic' and the invention of air fryers, to Public Enemy's Fight The Power, subway art and the political crisis in Georgia. We look at the lives of some of the most famous leaders, artists, scientists and personalities in history, including: visionary architect Antoni Gaudi and the design of the Sagrada Familia; Michael Jordan and his bespoke Nike trainers; Princess Diana at the Taj Mahal; and Görel Hanser, manager of legendary Swedish pop band Abba on the influence they've had on the music industry. You can learn all about fascinating and surprising stories, such as the time an Iraqi journalist hurled his shoes at the President of the United States in protest of America's occupation of Iraq; the creation of the Hollywood commercial that changed advertising forever; and the ascent of the first Aboriginal MP.(Photo: Eva Peron in 1951. Lara and Carey gird their loins once more as Moses serves Eva Peron on the balcony in "Book of Deuteronomy." First, Larz and Carz discuss their self-described martyrdom in soldiering on with the SUBS experience, a Milanese nun arrested for her ties to the mafia, Lara considering a cameo during Rome's Vatican Jubilee of 2025 and Carey's wish for her to wear a Papal veil. In "Deuteronomy," Moses's impending death motivates him to have his American Idol moment, with one final speech (and song!) to the Israelites before they enter the promised land. From recapping their Exodus from Egypt and the shenanigans they pulled during their half-a-century desert wandering, Moses isn't going to let his people off the hook. After a fiery sermon, Moses finally gets to die and pass the baton to Joshua, but not before God trolls him one last time. Harris has been tripping the light fantastic on the campaign trail only showing the side her campaign wants people to see. It reminds me of the many years I've spent covering the Oscars. The campaigns for Best Actress always follow the same pattern. They get a stylist. They make selective appearances. They show up on the rope line. They shake hands. They look great. The one thing they don't do is interviews.Hollywood has its greasy fingerprints all over the Harris campaign. We know that. They see it as their mission to stop Trump. So they've taken things into their own hands. It seems like Harris has hired awards consultants rather than politicos. They have her projecting mostly joy and positivity. Harris has done an excellent job playing the role they've given her, somewhere between the blessed virgin and Eva Peron. But they're flirting with disaster. That's not the real Kamala Harris. They're hiding her from the press because they know that. They're gambling on Trump, showing up as obnoxious, abusive, and belligerent. Harris will do everything she can to poke and prod him into a reaction. She will call him too old. She will say we need change. She will call him a racist. She will call him a criminal. One of the most enjoyable interviews I have had over the past two years was with Prof. Margaret Schwartz from Fordham University about Eva Peron. Clearly, I wasn't alone as that episode was the most listened to of all episodes released within the last year. Next season, Prof. Schwartz will return with an episode on the late Lady Diana. But, in the meantime here is a chance for new listeners to hear the episode or for long-term listeners to get a refresher. In July 1952, some 3 million people gathered in the heart of the Argentine capital Buenos Aires. They had come to pay their last respects to Eva Peron the President's wife. Overcome by emotion, the frenzied crowd poured forward leading to a crush in which 8 people were killed and thousands injured. Despite the huge crowds, Eva Peron or Evita as she was known was a divisive figure and her death was a milestone in rather than the end of her political influence in Argentina. In this episode, I explore the story of Evita. Featuring Dr Margaret Schwartz Associate Professor (Phd. University of Iowa) at Fordham University and author of Dead Matter: The Meaning of Iconic Corpses. Music from Pixabay

Throughout this season and in between the main episodes, you get to hear some of my interviews with artists, creatives, and industry experts. And in this bonus interview episode, two of the guests from the Evita episode share more stories and insights. The first one is actress Christina DeCicco, who played Eva Peron twice a week in the 2012 Broadway revival of Evita. She talks about her audition process, what rehearsals were like, and how she went about portrayed this iconic leading lady. I even open up a bit about my own time on the national tour and some of the parallels we both had in our respective productions. Next, is Sammi Cannold, a director and long-time fan of the musical itself. She was actually in Argentina when we had this conversation, and she'll be sharing what she's learned about this larger-than-life woman, who even decades later is still very much a part of the fabric of Argentina life and culture. This research has informed each of the three productions she's directed of Evita. The latest one was at American Reperatory Theater in Summer of 2023, which the Boston Globe called "Exceptional! A new generation's take on Evita." Eva Perón was a woman who beat the odds to become an inspiration to the people of Argentina. While powerful and popular, in hindsight, she was also complicated and controversial. What happens when you can't just let go... In a nice bookend to the story of the wandering case of the corpse of Eva Peron, we travel to Key West for the story of a fake doctor, stolen corpse, and a tale almost too weird to be true. tombwithaviewpodcast@gmail.comFacebookInstagram
Lady Emma has two weeks in American to lose her reputation and not be forced to marry the dastardly duke. Kenny has to drive her around Texas to get back in the good graces of the PGA Tour so he can play pro golf again. Why yes, this does seem radically mismatched stakes! It's Lady Be Good by Susan Elizabeth Phillips! This is one of those wild Susan Elizabeth Phillips joints, so all of the content you should be aware of is simultaneously 100% for real and also 100% ridiculous - everybody in this is incredibly over the top. The two that feel actively distressing is a major deception by the hero and this whole "blackmailed into marriage" business; on the "less realistically portrayed" side you've got a well-intentioned roofie-ing, a woman struggling with infertility who is cured by a big dick, emus in peril, a SEP-trademark parking lot throwdown, some family trauma drama, and a state fair baby race gone bad. If you like this one, check out our previous Susan Elizabeth Phillips episode about a book that shares some characters with this one, Fancy Pants! Until I went looking for that link I forgot that Eva Peron fat-shames somebody in that one! That's wild!

I'm prepping for a role when my movement coach John asks me, “What animal are you?” I'm confused because I'm playing a police officer from Philadelphia, not an animal. He continues, “We need to infuse your character with an animal. So what kind of animal would a Philadelphia police officer be?” I honestly have no clue. First, I say I'm a jaguar. But that doesn't work. He doesn't think a fox quite fits either, but then he mentions a Doberman Pinscher. I don't get it. What does a Doberman have to do with my role? But here's the thing: Dobermans are badasses in the canine world. They're smart, protective, and always on the lookout for danger. You really don't want to mess with them! Rehearsals begin and I take on the traits of a Doberman in the way I move my head, my body, and even walk across the stage. It completely transforms my character--just from that one coaching session! Kalinda Gray spends her life creating characters as her vocation, and today she and I dive into so much goodness about how she does it, where characters matter in storytelling, and so much more! You'll hear about character and stories as a personal escape, what helps suspend belief the most in storytelling and performance art, and how adaptation helps a business survive through a crisis like COVID when other companies fold. What you will learn in this episode: How fairy-tale princess stories also serve as life lessons How to help your audience go along for the ride with you as a storytelling performer How storytelling through character can help others with trauma Who is Kalinda? From Southern California, Kalinda made the world of performance art and storytelling in all forms her home from a young age. Her parents and high school drama teacher encouraged within her the expression of myth and legend ever since she was five years old. She particularly enjoys works that bring to life historical events and figures like Eva Peron, The Waltons, and Marilyn Monroe. In the live theater world, Kalinda has performed in over 200 local Southern California productions at the MET, the Blank Theatre, the Hollywood Bowl, Segerstrom Hall, the Maverick Theater, and other institutions. She co-founded the comedic improv puppeteering group All Puppet Players and has been involved in original works and creating characters for the stage, screen, and theme parks with Disney, Youtube, Universal Studios Hollywood, actor Cliff Osmond, and television writers Stan Zimmerman and Daniel Knauf. Kalinda uses her love of fairy tales, impersonations, puppetry, working with children, and event planning to entertain at parties through her Wishing Well Entertainment and Parties company. As the highest-rated company of its kind in Southern California, Wishing Well Entertainment has planned over 6,500 events for all ages to date and is privately sought after by the entertainment industry, A-list celebrities, high-end events, and families. When not on stage or at an event, Kalinda loves traveling to investigate famous myths and legends of famous places like Transylvania, Glastonbury, and Versailles. She also works in film television, and commercials and is a voice-over artist for video games and web series projects. Currently, she has multimedia projects, essays, and a Salem Witch Trials storytelling tour based on her independent historical research in the works.
