On today's episode, Dr. Heidi joins us to discuss the relationship between humanity and technology. We talk about using social tech to help us connect rather than disconnect from our fellow people, ask the question, “What is technology doing to us?”, and explore the human factor in our relationship to technology. We get into responsible tech design, such as considering how people tend to use or abuse their tech, as well as the responsibility of the users themselves in developing critical thinking and mindfulness when it comes to the effects their use habits have on their well-being. Lastly, Dr. Heidi gives us the low-down on her retreat foundation in France, SCI Valhalla D'Oc, and also shares her 3 favorite hacks for improving your relationship with technology. How Dr. Heidi helps people use social tech to connect themselves and the people within their organizations Using social tech to connect with each other rather than disconnect What is technology doing to us? Taking responsibility for allowing technology to have so much power over us and recognizing the human factors involved The effects of addictive design, and how that is still a human factor and not the technology itself What does responsible tech design look like? Building awareness and critical thinking when it comes to the user end of technology Being mindful of your physiological response to technology and evaluating whether your use habits are beneficial to your well-being or not The infancy stage of evolving technology and finding the balance between EMF exposure and getting beneficial use out of your tech An exploration of Dr. Heidi's foundation SCI Valhalla D'Oc, a retreat of sorts aimed at helping people to recognize the tools we can use to mitigate the power we give technology over our lives Dr. Heidi's 3 favorite hacks for improving your relationship with technology     In this episode you will hear:  Using technology as a tool for social connection What is technology doing to us? The human factors at play in our relationship with technology Who is responsible for healthy tech use? About five years ago we were still living in Sweden. We now live in California. I had season affective disorder that became progressively worse every year. It can result in very deep depression and it was on the extreme. I came to California for some meetings and felt normal because it was sunny every day and I was outside. I was with friends who were doing yoga everyday. They had a mindfulness practice of their own in that way. Just being part of that after being deep in a depression that had lasted several years, I was brought out enough in order to get that prospective look at what was going on. I saw that chemical response that was happening in my system. I knew that something needed to change. Not being able to get that awareness and prospective is where you get stuck without mindfulness. Thoughts on Breathing It's yogic breathing if anything. I used to teach yoga and I that type of breathing comes most naturally to me. Suggested Resources Book: Digital Self Mastery: Conquer Your Digital Habits To Boost Your Relationships and Business Growth App: The Breathe App on the Apple Watch (now available on other devices) Bullying Story I can give you a current story because I had an interesting experience just last week while I was speaking at a conference in Warsaw. It was a tech conference. My presentation was more of a story-telling thing. This was not a typical tech talk; instead I was telling people you need to be grateful for technology. This does not necessarily resonate with everyone. Later in the day I talked more about the research and the science behind it and the neurological implications. While I was speaking, somebody tweeted a nasty, trolling comment that was like, 'that was the most boring presentation, what does that have to do with tech ....'. I was raised that if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all. Anyway, it was unnecessary. I went back into the green room after my talk and I was looking at some of the comments and I saw that and my heart kind of sank. I thought, that wasn't a very nice thing to say. There were two or three people sitting around me when I read it and they said, 'that's awful'. Actually, the response was that they tweeted replies to the comment saying, that's so wrong, it was amazing. It was just this beautiful moment of support and wonderfulness. What I found from my own awareness of that response was that instead of it ruining my day, my response was; 'that's a shame', and, 'she must have been having a bad day.' I took a moment to breathe and I thought, 'that's really sad'. I felt sorry for her more than for me.

Power Quotes From The Show "It's become such a habit to just take our phones wherever we are because we haven't developed the routines around disconnecting from it. Texting is like a new toy. Older generations haven't really developed the habits to use the phone as often, but younger generations are already becoming accustomed to it. We're in this transition period of playing with technology and we haven't yet learned how to develop good behaviors and habits around it." - Dr. Heidi Forbes Öste "Whether we like it or not, cell phones have become so ingrained into everything that we do each day. It's our access to people, source of information, and portable brain. When we put it in that perspective, we can really start to appreciate how it's been designed to make life easier for us. Instead of seeing it as a burden, it holds everything from work documents to memories." - Dr. Heidi Forbes Öste "High value actions are all about you recognizing the key tasks that are important for you to accomplish each day so that you feel like you've completed something and have created value in your life. High value actions don't have to be big; they can be very small. Based on what you have to offer, focus on completing the tasks that will create the greatest value for you in your life and career."  - Dr. Heidi Forbes Öste "Technology can be very uplifting. The more we share what we learn and take the time to explore technology's potential without feeling fear and resentment, the greater the opportunity we have to grow. There are so many different ways to teach each other about wellness by being interconnected." - Dr. Heidi Forbes Öste Links From Today's Show: Dr. Heidi Forbes Öste Twitter Facebook LinkedIn YouTube 2BalanceU Twitter Instagram Evolving Digital Self Podcast 2BalanceU Blog Transition to BE-ing@Work in Practice BE-ing@Work Digital Self Mastery Ray Kurzweil Why Meditation and Mindfulness Training Is One of the Best Industries for Starting a Business in 2017 Instead of Detention, These Students Get Meditation Evernote The Search Inside Yourself Leadership Institute  CES Conference 2018 Wearable Technology Summit About Dr. Heidi Forbes Öste   Heidi Forbes Öste is a Social Strategy Advisor and Trainer, a Visual Practitioner and author of both BE-ing@Work and Digital Self Mastery.  She has over 20 years experience consulting in public and private sector on strategic use of new technologies; education technology, international marketing strategy, knowledge management and community building.   She is a social entrepreneur with a passion for connecting people globally for building and maintaining mutually beneficial relationships.  As part of her doctoral studies in Human and Organizational Systems, she has done research on Leadership in the New Social Paradigm applying field work in this area.   She has a passion for humanizing technology and strategic use of social tools for individuals & organizations both online & face-to-face.
