In this episode of the Impostor Syndrome Files, we talk about menopause. For some women, the phases of menopause follow a reasonably predictable course. For others, however, it might start earlier than expected or lead to unexplained symptoms that can have you asking, “What's wrong with me?” My guest this week, Susan Miele, a menopause educator and former chief people officer, shares how early perimenopause interrupted her once-thriving career. Without an understanding of what was happening to her, she began self-medicating and eventually left her job to focus on her health. Here we discuss the importance of menopause awareness in the workplace so that women can get the support and care they need to stay in their roles and continue to grow their careers. We also talk about ways in which organizations can have these conversations and normalize this experience.About My GuestDr. Susan Miele is a transformational leader and workplace well-being advocate dedicated to redefining the narrative around menopause. Susan frequently speaks and writes about workforce inclusivity, gender equality, and the retention of senior women, challenging organizations to see menopause as a key factor in creating supportive, inclusive workplaces.A former Chief People Officer at Ginkgo Bioworks, Susan led efforts to make biology easier to engineer. At Foundation Medicine Inc., she built a People Team that helped drive the company's rapid global growth and earned it multiple Best Places to Work awards. Her career spans senior leadership roles across biotech, publishing, finance, and more.Susan holds a PhD in Human and Organizational Systems and brings a mindset of continuous learning to her work. A dedicated yogi, she infuses her leadership with mindfulness and compassion. Imagine this scene. You are sitting in your office when a call comes in. A man and his wife are on the line. The wife says she was given your name from someone who thought you could help. Their adult children have not spoken to them for 10 months. They have pleaded, cajoled, and apologized for all past transgressions hoping they can make amends and, yet no amount of remorse can stop the pain of being disconnected. The husband says, “We miss our children. We miss our grandchildren. What can we do?” This scenario is an example of an emotional cut-off. Family disengagement and emotional splinters are trending upward for a variety of reasons. Our special guest, Margaret Otto, LSCSW and co-founder and director of KC Center for Families and Organizational Systems, offers insight regarding understanding the dynamics associated with emotional cut-offs and how they precipitate transgenerational impact.

Have you ever started a system and then gotten off track? (My hand is up!) We all need a restart every now and again, don't we? Some are easy, like the ones that tend to come naturally at the beginning of a new term. But others? They can feel like a disruption, a hassle, or even a disappointment. But here are three facts about organizational systems: It's OK if you put a system in place and it doesn't work out like you'd hoped. When you discover that a particular system or a part of a system doesn't work, that can be a really good thing. When you get off track, it doesn't mean that you're an unorganized person or that you can't handle follow-through. It means that your system needs attention. Not so sure about all of this? To learn more, visit lexipol.com.  In a recent blog post, Dave Williams, PhD, noted that half to two-thirds of Dallas city general funds are dedicated to police, fire and EMS. With significant tax dollar investments, elected officials, community leaders, and the media want to be good stewards. Still, they are frequently not equipped with the knowledge or data to determine if their services are built to get results and where there are opportunities for improvement. In this week's podcast, host Rob Lawrence sat down with EMS thought leader, Dr. Dave Williams, to discuss and identify the 12 questions local leaders can use to learn about their communities. Each point discussed should generate ideas for more learning and improvement both inside an organization and for those citizens and elected officials that surround it. Top quotes from this episode “I have been to dozens of ambulance systems around the world and met with leaderships teams and I can count on one hand the number of times they started by talking to me about their clinical outcomes.” “Almost all of your staff are not your generation … which means they have a totally different value system and a totally different prioritization of things.” “One of your real powers is to be able to help your community and its leaders understand what's happening in it. The data that you have is a huge enabler for others to be able to change policy.” Additional resources on this topic Williams' Blog To Err is Human: Building a Safer Health System The EMS workforce: Critical condition! Amid persistently inadequate numbers of direct care workers for resident care, long-term care administrators and staff members continue in their attempts to provide care for residents. Listen to our mind-blowing conversation with Dr. Lalich and we describe in detail the process of going through Baptiste training and her explanation of how it's deliberately designed to make us into "perfect little followers" and pretty soon taking on the doctrine of the group as our own. We have learned to commit and not speak out so any red flags we see are put on a "shelf" until one day the shelf breaks and we start to untangle and question everything. Classic techniques used since the 60's and 70's birth of the Large Group Awareness Trainings (LGAT) era have been re-purposed by Baron and Baptiste Yoga which are touted as "self-help" are actually designed to cause self abuse and train the participant to abuse and gaslight themselves using the "tools" learned in the trainings. Learn how to not "cult-hop" from one high control group to another by recognizing the sign and techniques used by many different types of cult-like groups. Janja Lalich, Ph.D. is a researcher, author, and educator specializing in cults and extremist groups, with a particular focus on charismatic relationships, political and other social movements, ideology and social control, and issues of gender and sexuality. She has been a consultant to educational, mental health, business, media, and legal professionals, as well as having worked with current members, former members, and families of members of controversial groups. A former Fulbright scholar, Dr. Lalich is Professor Emerita of Sociology at California State University, Chico, where in 2007 she was awarded the Professional Achievement Honor. Also, Dr. Lalich is the founder and director of the Center for Research on Influence and Control. She received a B.A. with Honors from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. She has a Master's in Human Development and a Ph.D. in Human and Organizational Systems from Fielding Graduate University in Santa Barbara, California. Dr. Lalich has written and lectured extensively and is author, coauthor, or editor of numerous books, articles, and chapters. Her most recent book is Take Back Your Life: Recovering from Cults and Abusive Relationships (Bay Tree Publishing, 2006), a fully-revised and expanded edition of her first book, Captive Hearts, Captive Minds, which has been the number-one book used by former cult members and their friends and families to better understand cult experiences and their consequences. Another of her recent publications is the critically acclaimed Bounded Choice: True Believers and Charismatic Cults (University of California Press, 2004), based on her research on the Heaven's Gate cult, the group that committed collective suicide in 1997, and her own 10+ years' experience in a political cult, the San Francisco-based Democratic Workers Party. Most importantly, this book puts forth Dr. Lalich's “bounded choice” theory, which offers a new approach for understanding the dynamics of “self-sealed” groups and the true-believer phenomenon.
