Why We Need More Ritual and Less HustleThe Missing Practice in Healing, Manifestation, and Personal GrowthIn this episode, JJ Flizanes explores a powerful question: When was the last time you intentionally paused? Not because you were exhausted, overwhelmed, or forced to stop—but because you consciously chose to reconnect with yourself. In a culture obsessed with productivity, achievement, self-improvement, and constant action, many of us have become disconnected from our bodies, our emotions, our intuition, and our inner wisdom.JJ discusses how hustle culture has infiltrated not only our work lives but also our healing journeys. We read the books, listen to the podcasts, take the courses, and attend the workshops—but often fail to create the space necessary for integration. True transformation doesn't happen through accumulating more information. It happens when we slow down enough to embody what we've learned.Drawing on themes from recent conversations about mental health, spiritual awakening, nervous system regulation, and emotional healing, JJ shares why intentional rituals may be one of the most overlooked tools for creating lasting change. Rituals create predictability, safety, reflection, and regulation. They tell the nervous system that it's okay to stop, breathe, and listen.Listeners will also hear the inspiration behind Sacred Rhythms, JJ's new community centered around New Moon Rituals and Full Moon Ceremonies. More than a spiritual practice, these gatherings provide structured opportunities to pause, reflect, create, release, heal, and reconnect with what truly matters. Whether you resonate with moon cycles or simply need a way to step off the hamster wheel of life, this episode offers a compelling case for bringing more ritual and less hustle into your daily experience. In This Episode:Why hustle culture is keeping us disconnectedThe difference between learning and integratingHow nervous system dysregulation fuels burnout and overwhelmWhy rituals exist in every culture throughout historyThe role of intentional pauses in emotional healing and manifestationHow nature teaches us through cycles of growth, release, and renewalThe difference between New Moon creation and Full Moon releaseWhy Sacred Rhythms was created and how it supports transformationKey Takeaways:Healing is not about collecting more information—it's about living what you learn.Manifestation isn't just about creating; it's also about clearing and making space for what's next.Rituals help regulate the nervous system by creating intentional moments of safety, reflection, and presence.Growth, healing, manifestation, and life itself are cyclical—not linear.Memorable Quote:"If we don't pause and take time to assess what we're doing and how we're doing it, we're on autopilot. In this powerful conversation, JJ Flizanes sits down with clinical psychologist Dr. Nafisa Sekandari to explore the deeper truth behind anxiety, burnout, and what it really takes to create lasting happiness. This episode goes beyond surface-level solutions and dives into the root causes of emotional and physical imbalance, especially for high-achieving women navigating stress, hormonal shifts, and overwhelm. From Trauma to AwarenessDr. Nafisa shares her personal journey of immigrating to the United States from Afghanistan as a child, navigating trauma, and developing debilitating shyness and anxiety.Through intentional self-work—facing fears, studying psychology, and exploring holistic healing—she transformed her challenges into a framework that now helps others do the same. The Hidden Anxiety Behind High AchievementMany high-performing women don't realize they are being driven by anxiety.Instead of presenting as dysfunction, anxiety often shows up as:OverachievementPerfectionismBurnout and chronic stressEmotional reactivity or overwhelmDr. Nafisa emphasizes that true healing requires addressing the root cause, not just managing symptoms. The Happiness Project: Intentional Change, Month by MonthAfter experiencing a particularly “effortful” year, Dr. Nafisa launched the Happiness Project—a year-long experiment focused on creating more joy through small, consistent changes. Each month targets a different life area, including:Environment and energyRelationships and connectionParenting and personal growthThe goal is not to ignore reality—but to focus on what you can control and become more intentional about how you live. You Can't Heal What You Don't FeelOne of the most important themes of this episode is emotional awareness. In a culture that avoids discomfort, many people:Suppress negative emotionsRush to “fix” feelingsLabel themselves as “dysregulated” instead of understanding the messageDr. Nafisa reframes this:Emotions are not the problem—they are signals.Healing begins when you allow emotions to surface, process them, and release their charge through awareness, expression, and integration. The Mind-Body Connection Is EverythingBoth JJ and Dr. Nafisa highlight how emotions directly impact physical health.Examples include:Anger → liver, tension, hormonal disruptionGrief → lungs, breathing issuesChronic stress → sleep disruption, anxiety, inflammationIgnoring emotional health can manifest physically, reinforcing the need for a holistic approach to healing. The Foundations of Real ChangeDr. Nafisa's approach integrates five key areas:MindsetEmotional healthBehavior patternsPhysical health (nutrition, sleep, movement)Spiritual connectionShe emphasizes that lifestyle is the entry point for most people.Simple but powerful shifts include:Prioritizing quality sleepReducing caffeine and stabilizing blood sugarSupporting the body with nutrition and movementCreating consistent daily routinesHappiness Isn't Ignoring Reality—It's Choosing Your FocusThis episode challenges the idea that focusing on happiness is naïve or dismissive.Instead, JJ and Dr. Nafisa reinforce:You cannot control the world—but you can control your responseYour emotional state influences your experience and outcomesBeing solution-focused creates more positive impact than staying problem-focusedKey TakeawaysAnxiety often hides behind achievement and productivityEmotional suppression leads to deeper imbalanceSmall, consistent changes create long-term transformationYour body reflects your emotional stateTrue empowerment comes from awareness, alignment, and intentional livingResources & Next StepsDr. Nafisa offers:Mental Health Break PodcastThe Happiness Project communityA free program: Beginner's Guide to Anxiety Management (use code “JJ”)Final ThoughtYou don't need to control everything around you to feel better. Doing Divorce Different A Podcast Guide to Doing Divorce Differently
Core wounds healing + nervous system rewiring for women over 40. In this episode, JJ Flizanes joins Lesa Koski to unpack core wounds healing, the “core wound map,” and how your subconscious beliefs shape people-pleasing, abandonment fears, and everyday triggers. You'll learn why core wounds healing isn't just awareness—it's rewiring, stretching past comfort zones, and building new neural pathways. JJ shares how core wounds healing can change your patterns in real time, and why choosing yourself is the pathway out of abandonment loops. Plus, a powerful look at 2026's “Year of the Fire Horse” energy—movement, action, and expansion after a season of shedding. If you're navigating midlife change, divorce recovery, emotional healing, or you're ready to stop spiraling and start choosing you, this conversation will meet you right where you are.Timestamps (in parentheses):(These are listener-friendly timestamps—adjust to match your final audio.) (00:00) Welcome + why JJ is a “big deal” and where to find her work (02:10) Lesa's healing journey + why the Core Wounds course mattered (05:10) JJ explains core wounds as subconscious beliefs (and why therapy can stall) (10:40) The “core wound map” + why people process differently (moon signs + patterns) (16:30) Why awareness isn't always enough: rewiring requires stretching (20:30) The “video that made her cry” example + how the brain flags “unsafe” (24:40) Neuroplasticity story: cats in an RV + how the brain learns “I didn't die” (28:40) Lesa gets real: people-pleasing, overexplaining, and tiny daily triggers (33:10) Abandonment wound: the belief underneath it + “How do you abandon yourself?” (38:15) “Choose you” homework: one daily small step + one bigger weekly stretch (42:30) Healing in relationship vs healing alone + the power of mirroring (47:10) Tribe + community: why group energy accelerates growth (50:25) 2025 shedding → 2026 Year of the Fire Horse begins Feb 17, 2026 (55:10) How to work with JJ + her application link + closingKey Takeaways:Core wounds are subconscious beliefs that shape how you see yourself and relationships—often without you realizing it.Awareness is step one, but rewiring requires action that stretches your comfort zone and builds new neural pathways.People-pleasing and overexplaining can be signs of an abandonment pattern—your nervous system trying to stay “safe.”Healing isn't just emotional; it's nervous-system and behavior change, practiced moment-to-moment and proactively.Community matters: being in a tribe of people on a similar growth path keeps your “coal” warm and your progress moving.Guest Bio:JJ Flizanes is a personal development coach, podcast host, and creator of emotional healing programs focused on identifying and rewiring subconscious patterns. She developed the Core Wound Map, expanding on the core wound exercise from Imago therapy, and continues to teach tools for emotional resilience, nervous system awareness, and practical rewiring strategies.Resource Links:DIY Parenting Plan CourseFind More From Lesa Here!Sign up for my newsletter https://enchanting-basil-714.myflodesk.com/qwzridafyj

I was going to write some extensive show notes for this very entertaining and informative episode, when I stumbled across a really sweet post that Strickland put on Facebook. Since you might have missed it, I decided to copy/paste that here instead. Either that, or I was feeling really lazy and didn't feel like writing show notes (unlike every other Thursday night at 10:44 PM, which is when they finally get me the fuckery episodes and they need to be posted within a few hours), I'll leave it to you to decide. It's kinda like a "Choose your own adventure" book, but in this case it's a "Which version of Mr/Mrs. Show Note Writer do you want to believe?" If you're not a member of teh Facebook group yet, go to http://www.NiceShortCut.com and sign up. No, they're not going to try to sell you a bunch of shit, it's a nice, friendly group. OK, here's the post:For those of you who don't know (although, if you've even listened, I don't know how you could doubt this) Doug Sandler and I don't plan our Friday Fuckery episodes. Occasionally, we come with topics, but that's the exception, not the rule anymore. Today at 5:20 PM CST, 10 minutes before our scheduled recording time, I was not "feeling it." I'm a pro, and the show must go on, so I would never cancel on the fuckery, but on some days, it's more challenging than others. Doug, wasn't just not feeling it, he forgot and was actually running late! If you know Doug, you know this is a very, very rare occurance, but in this instance, it gave me the perfect opportunity to adjust my attitude and get myself in the right headspace. JJ Flizanes also joined us, which was a very pleasant surprise, since I haven't seen her in quite a while, and she brings a bit of grounding to the insanity that is "Doug & Strickland." This is an image I captured right after we finished recording, and it's a great reflection of the vibe of the episode. I'm so grateful every day for this amazing life I'm living, for having amazing people like Doug in my life, and for all of you (mostly anonymous) listeners enjoying the fuckery every week. We have a handful of Funkin' Fans who call in semi-regularly (you know who you are) and even though they represent a small percentage of the downloads we get every week, we still appreciate all of you, whether you call in or not. If you're one of those anonymous listeners, call 4242-DJ DOUG and leave us a message. We don't even care what you say, but it would be great to know you're out there. If you're not inclined to do that, at least like this post, or leave us a comment. Doug Sandler and I are real people, and as Ryan Bokros so famously said years ago "I met Doug and Strickland, and I can confirm that they are the same assholes you hear on the show." Thanks for sticking with us, even if you choose to stay anonymous. Do you want some cool merch? Check out the store here- https://www.niceguysonbusiness.com/merch Need podcast production?
