On today's episode, Dr. Heidi joins us to discuss the relationship between humanity and technology. We talk about using social tech to help us connect rather than disconnect from our fellow people, ask the question, “What is technology doing to us?”, and explore the human factor in our relationship to technology. We get into responsible tech design, such as considering how people tend to use or abuse their tech, as well as the responsibility of the users themselves in developing critical thinking and mindfulness when it comes to the effects their use habits have on their well-being. Lastly, Dr. Heidi gives us the low-down on her retreat foundation in France, SCI Valhalla D'Oc, and also shares her 3 favorite hacks for improving your relationship with technology. How Dr. Heidi helps people use social tech to connect themselves and the people within their organizations Using social tech to connect with each other rather than disconnect What is technology doing to us? Taking responsibility for allowing technology to have so much power over us and recognizing the human factors involved The effects of addictive design, and how that is still a human factor and not the technology itself What does responsible tech design look like? Building awareness and critical thinking when it comes to the user end of technology Being mindful of your physiological response to technology and evaluating whether your use habits are beneficial to your well-being or not The infancy stage of evolving technology and finding the balance between EMF exposure and getting beneficial use out of your tech An exploration of Dr. Heidi's foundation SCI Valhalla D'Oc, a retreat of sorts aimed at helping people to recognize the tools we can use to mitigate the power we give technology over our lives Dr. Heidi's 3 favorite hacks for improving your relationship with technology     In this episode you will hear:  Using technology as a tool for social connection What is technology doing to us? James was born with a congenital disability called femoral dysplasia and a floating hip of the left leg as well as scoliosis of the spine. He grew up on a NATO base in S.H.A.P.E (Casteau), Belgium, but now resides back in Prestatyn, North Wales. He is a transformation coach by trade, but he was an elite Paralympic athlete for just over a decade. James says that he has been lucky enough over those years to have represented Great Britain at countless World Championships and 2 Paralympics Games (Beijing 2008 and London 2012) to just name a few. James started out my sporting career in swimming and was part of British Swimming's Potential Squad from 2003-05. During that time, he held the SB8 200m breaststroke and 50m breaststroke national records. After being dropped from the GB swimming programme, he moved on to rowing in 2006. The transition happened fairly quickly as he made his first senior international competition that summer at the 2006 World Championships in Dorney Lake, Great Britain, and made the final finishing 6th. 2007 World Championships Semi-Finalist, 2008 Paralympic Finalist (5th) and 2009 World Championships Finalist (5th). James made another transition of sport, this time to sitting volleyball. From 2010 until 2012, he amassed 56 caps for Great Britain. His first international was a surprise selection to compete at the 2010 World Championships in Edmund, Oklahoma, USA. James says that. he was lucky enough that his time with the squad, to have competed for Great Britain, at his only European Championships in his repertoire, as well as a Continental and Intercontinental Cup. James’ career calumniated at the London 2012 Paralympics were the GB sitting volleyball squad lost in the quarter-final to eventual silver medallist Iran. James says that having a disability himself, he completely understand the adversity one can face on a day-to-day basis. Also, he wanted to bridge that gap between mainstream fitness and disability, as there is not a lot of fitness topics, about and for people with disability, to widen their knowledge and/or to just improve their quality of living. Evolving Digital Self

Play Episode Listen Later May 28, 2019 8:02

On this mini episode Dr Heidi Forbes Öste streams live from the Barcelona airport on being a digital global nomad, the future of Evolving Digital Self and upcoming projects. Overview of Digital Wellbeing as it is covered on Evolving Digital Self for 2BalanceU. There are four areas of Digital Wellbeing that are interconnected. First of all, there's the individual and that's the most important part because the individual is part of all of the other pieces. In this we look at the human relationship with technology and how we're engaging with it, improving our behaviors around it, and also identifying sensitivities and areas where toxicities related to technology in our engagement with it can be improved, neutralized and/or harmonized so that we can be more effective, happy, connected, and human. The second piece is where organizations are made up of those individuals and people and identifying how organizations are creating cultures that support positive digital wellbeing, positive relationships with technology and how you can support wellbeing in general in the way that we engage with technology. Everything from how we sit when we're engaging with our devices, to the devices themselves. The other pieces that a lot of those organizations are developing really cool technologies. But we need to be mindful in the development of those technologies on how they are impacting the human experience. Are we taking wellbeing considerations into account when we're creating design? Are we taking integration into account when we are designing things for the future? How do they impact the human experience? Again, it comes back to that individual. The final piece is really the important part of understanding where policy is going and how we can future proof our organizations and ourselves. So we're protecting our privacy, we're protecting our wellbeing and we're not creating toxic environments, um, for individuals as we go forward. There's a lot of concerns about everything from EMF and 5G's. And I think it's just for us to take those things into consideration because there, there are new laws that are coming into place and there should be, but understanding where those are going and how they may impact us and also how we can influence those future regulations and policies so that they have a positive outcome for everyone. So what I've been working on recently, and will be sharing a lot about this journey, is we are creating a physical space in France designed in very mindful way to integrate the principles of digital wellbeing. One can experience being connected but not having it be in a harmful way. The intent is also to be able to capture some really good data about the impact on productivity, on happiness, on a physical and mental wellbeing. All of these different metrics are so important us to understand on a global scale what is the impact of what we're creating and how we're integrating it into our experiences. We’ll be launching a new show called Global Nomad Hacks. I will be giving you more details as we get closer to the launch. Do you have a suggestion of someone that should be interviewed on either Evolving Digital Self regarding digital wellbeing or Global Nomad Hacks (thriving tips for on living abroad or on the road) or a product/service that should be highlighted? The daughter of an entrepreneur, Julie Meyer never had a chance to escape the same fate. Going to Paris, France at age 21 to ‘faire fortune’ and to escape being the baby of the family, she soon realised that she found herself in a moment of transformational change in Europe in the late 1980’s. With German grandparents, a failure to learn French at school (un echec total), and fascinated by the coming together of the European market and the spread of freedom and free enterprise, she stayed, getting an MBA in 1997 at INSEAD, the leading European business school where she now sits on the Board of Directors and was named one of their top 50 alumni, and building the first social network for Internet entrepreneurs in 1998-2000, First Tuesday, which she sold for $50 million in July 2000, and many credited with igniting the Internet generation in Europe. She was instrumental in the early stages of lastminute.com, WGSN, Espotting, Skype, Zopa, SpinVox and Monitise. She and her team have sold businesses to Google (BeatThatQuote – March 2011 – quadrupling the founder’s own expectations for exit valuation), EMI (Digital Stores - where the founder has become Head of Ecommerce), and private equity. With some amazing people, she has built Ariadne Capital since 2000 on the back of a couple of core principles: back men and women of steel who are pursuing the inevitable and re-imagining their industries as ecosystems, and aggregate the right talent and capital to enable their success. She is someone who wants to build new systems for the inclusion of all, and to help smart people win. She is a huge believer in the human spirit, and believes we are all on the planet to deliver a unique contribution to the world. She created the EntrepreneurCountry concept because she felt the world should go where entrepreneurs go everyday, and issued a global invitation to become a citizen in Sep 2013. Dr. Forbes Öste's BE-ing@Work research explores triggers to presenteeism, showing up physically but absent in presence-of-mind, and potential tech-based solutions. In the Digital Era, using technology is required to manage relationships with teams and clients. Understanding how we interact with tech, and finding the best solutions as our needs, interests and businesses evolve is critical for success and wellbeing. We aim to achieve a state of sociomateriality, a fluid interaction between the digital and self, from which our best comes forward. BE-ing@Work explores the potential for wellbeing apps and devices to counter the effects of presenteeism and achieve sociomateriality. 2BalanceU aims to improve the contemporary workplace, where presence is possible, valued and augmented by innovation, knowledge and respect for the individual as part of the whole. The BE-ing@Work research explores both root causes (ie. chronic illness, lifestyle, workplace culture, physical work setting, technology use) and solutions (ie. well-being programs, incentive, measurement and technology).
