To get there, however, they need the assistance of the Borg Queen, played by Annie Wersching--who, in this alternate reality, appears to be a captive on Earth. What else is in store for Picard? This panel also included a pleasant surprise: the show will premiere on October 28 and the first episode is an hour long. The trailer shows us the crew of young aliens who happen to find an experimental Federation starship named the U.S.S. Protostar, but they've never heard of Starfleet or the Federation. Taking Trek Back To School By Thomas Reynolds and Rosco McQueen With Labor Day on rearview sensors, the American student body is headed back to school–and so is the Trek franchise, if Kurtzman has his way. Back in Episode 519, we mentioned that a Starfleet Academy-situated series “aimed at younger audiences” was in the works. Since then, Eric Pesola at Heavy suggested that the new series concept is far older than it appears. Don't worry, it's safe for them to wear red shirts because they're named characters. Image: IDW Comics, via Heavy.com. Pesola draws parallels between JJ's franchise “revival” in 2009, and Harve Bennett turning it around after The Motion Picture almost torpedoed it thirty years prior. Bennett helmed the next three series entries and more-or-less put Trek's fortunes on the up-and-up. That said, after his Final Frontier almost finished it for good, Bennett pitched one more idea: a prequel film set at Starfleet Academy, with Ethan Hawke as Kirk and John Cusack as Spock. The studio went with a thinly-veiled Cold War analogy instead but, twenty years later, class might finally be in session. During the Star Trek Day celebrations, Wil Wheaton asked Kurtzman about the future of Trek on TV, Kurtzman said that with five ongoing series, he's “not in a hurry” to launch any more. But he did bring up the fan enthusiasm for a series set at Starfleet Academy. The new bit of fiction finds Admiral Quinn providing feedback to Admiral Leeta on a new Starfleet training simulation to test special operations into the Mirror Universe. It seems despite her cooperation, Quinn finds her bloodlust a bit much even for a simulation. I mean honestly, if a Captain can't use Exocomps as cannon fodder anymore what are you supposed to do? Patch 34 concludes Fleet Command's first [nope, our bad—Ed.] foray into Prime Timeline storytelling, wrapping the TNG arc begun back in May while adding Tasha Yar to the officer roster. Meanwhile, your existing crew collection will gain Traits that boost the chance of Critical Success for Away Team assignments. And as for those assignments: as of Patch 34, assignments will automatically respawn once they are completed. Well they're on GOG Galaxy now in time for Star Trek Day! TREK IT OUT by Shane Hoover Picard Final Marketing Push After what seemed like a lifetime of waiting and marketing teases… Or were we just mentally trapped in a Kataanian probe full of Picard marketing for 20 minutes? Hey, either way it's finally time! Star Trek Picard premiers on CBS: All Access this week. Whether you've already seen the series pilot or not, we've got a couple of fun stories from Picard's final marketing push.  For starters, CBS arranged a two day takeover of London's Picadilly Circus Underground station. Star Trek branding adorned the tiled roundels in the station's ticket hall, declaring it to be “PICARDilly Circus”. Signs and train line maps throughout the station carried the theme as well.  If you closed your eyes, you could perhaps imagine yourself in a Federation transportation hub as the PA announced “Please take care when using stairs, escalators or transporters.” Next stop - Earth Space Dock? Our next Picard marketing tidbit comes courtesy of a Variety interview with the cast and crew at the show's premiere event in Hollywood. When asked which Trek character each of them would most like to share drinks with, the answers were gracious, touching, and funny in turn. Sir Patrick Stewart joked, “Your question suggests that that hasn't happened yet.” before adding “There are a lot of new characters with me now. And they are, without exception, delightful people. So a glass or two of something pleasant with any of them would be a treat.” Rod Roddenberry touchingly replied, “My dad. I know that's not what you were asking, but that's who I'd most like to hang out with.” While several other cast and crew all agreed that Picard himself was their man of choice, new star Isa Briones offered an amusing reply, “I shouldn't answer that because I'm not 21 for a few days! Hypothetically, Guinan, because she would get me drunk in the right way!” And our last Picard marketing bit comes courtesy of Sir Patrick's appearance on the BBC talk show The Graham Norton Show. The host asked Stewart if, given TNG's heavy syndication, he ever found himself unintentionally drawn into watching the show.  While Sir Patrick declared that he doesn't seek out the show, he shared a funny story about one night staying in a hotel. While channel surfing, Stewart came across an episode of The Next Generation.  After watching for a few minutes, he found himself hooked. It was at this point that his room service order was brought into the room, and the hotel staff person looked at him, looked at the television, and went away. Stewart told Norton, “I thought, he's going to go away and tell the entire kitchen “It's the saddest thing I've ever seen. This guy is upstairs, alone, having room service,  watching himself on TV!” Discovery Season Three and Lower Decks Nearing Release? There's still no official word from CBS on the release schedule for the rest of its forthcoming Star Trek shows.  However, a couple of Tweets were dropped this past week that give us hints that we may not have long to wait. First, back on January 14th, TrekCore.com's twitter account posted a very brief chat with Executive Producer Heather Kadin. Asked if Discovery's new season would be coming on the heels of Picard, Kadin had a surprising answer. She said, “It's not up to me. CBS All Access schedules it. I'll tell you that, come May, a lot of things will be ready. “Lower Decks” will be ready. “Discovery” Season 3 will be ready.” She added her expectation that the shows would be scheduled to ensure a steady flow of content. She also declared, “I can't wait for people to see “Lower Decks”“ Just a few days later, on the 17th, another tantalizing Tweet appeared. Michelle Paradise, Discovery Season 3's writer, tweeted a photo of one line of script boldly declaring “End of Season Three”. So with the writing on the show complete, and the Picard Executive Producer expecting the shows to be ready by May, maybe we won't be waiting long after Picard's finale for the next show. 25th Anniversary of Voyager 25 years ago, Captain Janeway and the crew of the U.S.S. Voyager began their adventures in the Delta Quadrant. In honor of the special day, many of Voyager's cast members took to Twitter to celebrate. The Captain herself posted a short video captioned “Thought I'd dust off my uniform (pips, badge & boots) in celebration of the 25th anniversary.” In the video, to the stirring tune of Voyager's theme music, Kate Mulgrew has arranged her Starfleet uniform and a Voyager script atop a Voyager folding director's chair. Robert Picardo, who played The Doctor, shared a photo of his character in costume as the Emergency Command Hologram with the caption, “The ECH has issued an order: you'd better be celebrating 25 years of Voyager! Please don't tell Kate Mulgrew I'm sitting in her chair again.” Seven of Nine's Jeri Ryan, now working on Star Trek Picard, posted a full cast photo captioned “Happy 25th Birthday, Star Trek Voyager! To the journey…” And eternal Ensign Harry Kim, Garret Wang, posted two cast photos with a note saying “So, it was exactly 25 years ago, this evening, that Voyager first aired on UPN. Being able to graduate from Starfleet Academy, rise through the ranks at Starfleet, and Captain our very own starship as we warp throughout the 50 plus years of the Star Trek Universe. This year alone we will see Voyager celebrate its 25th anniversary, we'll see Captain Jean-Luc Picard takes to stars again, we will again have more than one Star Trek show to look forward to, and the game that has glued all our favorite stories together will turn 10 years old. For PC players beginning this Tuesday, January 28th, Star Trek Online beams down the party patrol, hands out the party poppers, and releases the Omega Particles. There will be two new crafting options for the Omega particles this year, you will now be able to craft mark OR rarity variations of the Omega upgrades. The party pooper this year will feature the greatest hits of past poppers. The anniversary pack is adding several new emotes including a Disco Dance, Tea - Earl Grey, Evil Plans, Organian Greetings, and Ta-dah! And of course you'll be able to earn yourself a shiny new Tier 6 ship, The Khitomer Alliance Battlecruiser. Klingon/Federation Hybrid Ship for the 10th Anniversary An amalgamation of design aesthetics from both the Klingon Defence Force and Starfleet, this formidable ship comes with the Aligned Antiproton Shielding Universal Console. Which when activated gives a temporary boost to Energy Weapon Haste, Shield Regeneration, and Shield Capacity that increases the more damage your shields take. Re-activating the ability afterwards will deal antiproton damage to each nearby enemy. Reaching level 5 in the Alliance Battlecruiser will unlock the Automated Shield Alignment Starship Trait. Slotting this trait will give a bonus to damage based on what percentage of your shields is missing. Defeating an enemy will restore a substantial portion of your shields. New Task Force Operation Launching with 10th Anniversary The task force operation, To Hell with Honor, was announced last week and featured on a recent Ten Forward Weekly live stream. The TFO has Captains taking the fight to J'Ula in a space versus ground forces battle on a barren moon. As John Hegner noted during the live stream, there are a couple of different strategies players can take when approaching the TFO. Stage one pits Captains against ground turrets while they make their way to J'Ula's headquarters. During stage two, Captains will battle against both J'Ula's forces and Elachi ground walkers. Any turrets not destroyed during stage one will help you fight the Elachi. There is a stage three, but not wanting to spoil anything, we'll let listeners discover that for themselves. Two Previous TFOs Return with 10th Anniversary Update The 10th Anniversary update will also bring us two previous TFOs into regular rotation. Battle at the Binary Stars and the Mycelial Realm return to join the permanent list of regularly available TFOs. In Battle at the Binary Stars you'll take on the role of a Discovery era starship involved with the famous battle we first saw in the premiere episode of Star Trek Discovery. Not only is this a beautiful map and exciting battle, but you'll get to see cutscene recreated in game as they played out in Discovery. Then enter the Mycelial Realm in a ground TFO where you'll team up with Tardigrade to fight Elachi and try to hinder J'Ula's efforts. Event Campaign Continues and Mudd's Market Launches on Console Console Captain's can continue their campaign progress towards a free Tier Six ship coupon by playing in the Voth Breach event. Players have the choice of either playing the Into the Breach featured Task Force Operation or in any of the new re-imagined space patrols that were previously released on PC. Completing the daily progress with the TFO or two of the patrols 14 times will also earn you the Voth power Subcore console along with the usual Featured TFO rewards. This even runs now until January 27th. The USS Ross Galaxy Variant Revealed on Clear Skies Show On this week's episode of “Clear Skies,” the Star Trek Adventures RPG from the creative minds behind “Shield of Tomorrow,” the crew of the USS Ross finally set out on their adventure and gave us our first look at the starship. The title sequence, put together by none other than ZEFilms, showcases the Galaxy variant which will be available as an in game variant for exploration cruisers. WEEKLY TOP TIP With the Voth Breach arriving on Console as the featured TFO, we want to give you a couple of tips for completing it hastily. The first stage of the TFO is pretty straight forward, literally. You and your teammates fly at full impulse down the outside spine of the ship firing all around. Very much like the Death Star trench run in Star Wars. Occasionally you'll slow down to take out some turrets and then in the featured version you'll head straight down into the belly of the ship to take on the Subpower Cores. Here's where the first tip comes in. Only one of the three chambers will have the correct subpower core. The other two will have a question mark in the name. Don't attack these ones, heal yourself up and go to another chamber. Remember that a chamber will not have the correct subpower core twice in a row. After your team explodes the Subpower Core, head into the next chamber and start taking down the primary power core. This one has a rotating shield. You can either fly around the core keeping your ship broadsiding the exposed space between the shielding, or sit tight and buff up your ship when the shield blocks your firing arcs. It's up to you. But make sure you get your pacing down or you'll be wasting your buffed attacked on an immune shield. Starting on the same day as the Picard premiere Timelines starts a new campaign that offers Irumodic Syndrome Picard and EV Suit Seven of Nine as rewards.  Starting the same day is Timelines' newest event titled, Right on Q. Because Picard news seems to be everywhere at once now.  For starters comes the news that the new Picard series, which hasn’t streamed a single episode yet, has officially been renewed by CBS for a second season.  ViacomCBS Executive Vice President, Julie McNamara, cited the magnitude of excitement for the show’s premiere as a driving reason for the renewal. Also announced this week, Picard’s sister show “Star Trek: Discovery” has more quietly been green-lit for a fourth season.  This too, before an episode of Season 3 has been released. Sir Patrick Stewart Talks to NPR The obvious place to start would be with the Captain himself. Sir Patrick Stewart sat down last week for a chat with NPR’s Weekend Edition Sunday program. As he has stated before, Stewart was initially not considering a return to the role of Jean Luc Picard, but he’s now added some details to his thoughts on the matter. The political climate in the U.K. and the United States left Stewart feeling that the real world had become too distanced from Star Trek’s Federation ideal. He specifically mentioned his disappointment, embarrassment, and even anger at the U.K.’s decision to leave the European Union, saying “The European Union always made me feel, well, we are heading towards our own Federation of Planets somewhere down the line, that will come about.” But, while sitting down with the show’s producers, Picard was introduced to their vision for a Federation that’s very different from the one Jean Luc was last seen defending. This Federation has leaned toward isolationism, and Picard has distanced himself.  The discussion was enough to change Stewart’s mind and intensely spark his interest.  Stewart also let drop a mention that during or after the Romulan refugee crisis, Picard made some “errors of judgement; mistakes.” Speaking to what the character still has to offer viewers today, Sir Patrick highlighted the Captain’s modesty, patience, and passion for humankind. He points out, “One of the great things about Jean Luc was he was a great listener and would only speak when he felt everyone had expressed what they believed. The crew of the Enterprise came to know that they were at liberty to speak the truth about what they believed and what they thought.” Stewart believes more people, particularly leaders, could stand to speak up about what they truly and passionately believe. At a press tour in Pasadena, California, Kurtzman and producing partner Heather Kadin answered questions from Trek news website TrekCore.com. Asked about the lessons learned from the inaugural seasons of Star Trek: Discovery, he spoke about the importance of hearing the reactions and feedback of fans. “Before we lock things down it’s terribly important to listen to fans, and hear what they like — and what they didn’t respond to — or what wasn’t clear. To make sure we’re tacking accordingly. I learned when I started working in the ‘Star Trek’ world that that’s a really essential part of making these shows.”, said Kurtzman. Speaking to the state of the Star Trek universe as a whole, Heather Kadin mentioned the ongoing development of the Section 31 show, and the animated Lower Decks and Nickelodeon projects. The key question , she says “Is this [show] a unique space we haven’t explored yet?”, and she hopes they continue to find those new avenues. Kurtzman offered up an intriguing new bit of news next, declaring that there are two more live action shows in the works that haven’t even been announced. With Discovery viewer reaction hugely vocal, it can probably be assumed that one of those shows will be a show centered around Pike and Spock’s Enterprise. We’ll just have to speculate what the other unannounced show might be. Jeri Ryan Interviews with IGN The next in this week’s series of Picard interviews is coverage of Jeri Ryan’s chat with IGN. Speaking about where the new series finds Voyager’s Seven of Nine, Ryan explains that Seven has seen a lot of “dark crap” in the last 20 years.  The universe is a mess, she says, and Seven holds Starfleet and the Federation largely responsible. As the story opens, Seven is working with a group of freedom fighters called the Fenris Rangers. Ryan says the group is trying to keep a semblance of order in the galaxy’s mess.  Her path crosses with that of Jean Luc Picard, and Ryan says, “This is the first time that Seven and Picard actually meet. They know each other by reputation. And ... Seven's not on the 'Oh, he's a god' bandwagon I think, initially, when she meets him”.  Ryan’s character was brought into the story because of Picard’s fundamental relationship with the Borg. Alex Kurtzman has said that Seven of Nine organically grew into the story through her shared experiences as someone who had also been assimilated. The opportunity to explore that element of their lives, and what it means to them, presented compelling questions for the show. Marina Sirtis Speaks on Troi’s Return As part of a Picard panel for the Television Critics Association, Marina Sirtis had the opportunity to address her return to the screen as The Next Generation’s Deana Troi. The actress admits that TNG fans eager to find out all about the state of their favorite characters in Picard may be left short. She says viewers can expect to find out a little bit about Troi and Riker, but not everything. Sirtis also shared a humorous anecdote about joining the show.  It seems that when she spoke to the wardrobe department of Picard, they were unaware that Sirtis wore a wig and black contact lenses for her TNG costume. Luckily, the actress could bail them out. She says, “I was like, ‘Do you know what? I think I stole them so I think I have them. So let’s just get the contact lenses cleaned because they’ve been sitting in a lens case for 15 years, and I have the wig.” Speaking generally about her return, Sirtis recalled comments made by Carrie Fisher on her return to Star Wars. She quoted Carrie saying “I’m a 60-year-old actress in Hollywood. People aren’t exactly throwing scripts at me”, which is kind of the place I’m in.” With the humor Sirtis regularly displays at Trek conventions, she also pointed out her least favorite aspect of joining Picard - filming in HD - saying, “Really, the man who invented high definition cameras, and it was a man because a woman would never have invented it, right? Fargo and Legion creator Noah Hawley spoke to Deadline this week about his upcoming Star Trek feature film. Interestingly, Hawley says it’s not decided if his film will carry on with the cast of the recent Star Trek films by Bad Robot.  The project also might not be connected to the ongoing Trek universe of Alex Kurtzman and CBS. The filmmaker says, “I have my own take on Star Trek, and going back to what I loved about The Next Generation. When a lot of franchises focus on ‘might makes right’, Star Trek is about exploration and humanity at its best, and diversity and creative problem solving.” He specifically called out the moment in Wrath of Khan when Captain Kirk stalls for time as they remotely lower the Reliant’s shields. Those are the elements of Trek that he wants to reach.  Hawley says he still needs to write the script, and wants to be respectful to the underlying material. Star Trek Online and Gaming News by Anthony Cox Star Trek Online 10th Anniversary Begins with Cryptic Message With the 10th Anniversary of Star Trek Online right around the corner, many of us have been waiting for an announcement regarding the milestone event. Well, in a tweet dated January 14th, Star Trek Online shared a 10 Years of STO wallpaper featuring the Enterprise F and the Bortasqu Klingon Cruiser with a strange block of inserted text that read, “Hear me?” Even more mysterious was if you followed the link to the wallpaper and then clicked the wallpaper itself, you were taken to a completely different image. This one indicates a coded transmission and the saucer section of the Enterprise F with a series of characters where the registry number should have been. After being decoded through the ACII85 coding language, it translated to a phone number. Calling the phone number played a recording of the original series intro with a series of numbers spoken throughout. One of our own Patreon supporters, SFC, helped in linking the numbers to a hidden Cryptic blog post. This one contains a video that three more transmissions were coming and an audio recording of someone who seems to be given a recording device to make audio logs about their experiences. STO Hypes up Picard with a New(?) Bundle In anticipation of Star Trek: Picard, Star Trek Online has announced a new Picard Bundle. And we use the term “new” loosely. The bundle is now available and includes all uniforms and variations from The Next Generation, including the All Good Things uniform from the series finale. It also includes the Privateer uniform Picard wears in the episodes Gambit parts one and two. The replica Thompson submachine gun is the only weapon in the bundle. However the bundle does include three starships, a Tier three Constellation class cruiser, complete with an updated visual skin, a tier five Galaxy exploration cruiser and upgrade token, and a Miradorn Raider. Which was previously only available from a lockbox. The Picard Bundle will set you back 12,000 zen, that is unless you purchase it between now and January 20th when it will be on sale for only 6,000 zen. Star Trek Online Updates In Memoriam As many Star Trek Online players noticed a few weeks ago the in memoriam plaques on Earth Space Dock, the Klingon First City, and New Romulus Command. If you haven’t already we encourage you to take the time to visit these new installations, which are now columns lit-up in faction colors. Each one has a rotating list of names belonging to major contributors of the Star Trek franchise. Most recently adding Rene Auberjonois and Aaron Eisenberg. The devs have added item filtering and searching in all inventory windows. The bundle is now available and includes all uniforms and variations from The Next Generation, including the All Good Things uniform from the series finale. It also includes the Privateer uniform Picard wears in the episodes Gambit parts one and two. The replica Thompson submachine gun is the only weapon in the bundle. However the bundle does include three starships, a Tier three Constellation class cruiser, complete with an updated visual skin, a tier five Galaxy exploration cruiser and upgrade token, and a Miradorn Raider. Which was previously only available from a lockbox. The Picard Bundle will set you back 12,000 zen, that is unless you purchase it between now and January 20th when it will be on sale for only 6,000 zen. Star Trek Online Updates In Memoriam As many Star Trek Online players noticed a few weeks ago the in memoriam plaques on Earth Space Dock, the Klingon First City, and New Romulus Command. If you haven't already we encourage you to take the time to visit these new installations, which are now columns lit-up in faction colors. Each one has a rotating list of names belonging to major contributors of the Star Trek franchise. Most recently adding Rene Auberjonois and Aaron Eisenberg. And if you're missing those two specific Star Trek performers, be sure to stop by Quark's Bar the next time you're on Deep Space Nine. Both Odo and Captain Nog are now sharing a conversation at the far end of the bar for players to join in on. Patch Notables The patch notes for PC had a few interesting things we wanted to mention. The devs have added item filtering and searching in all inventory windows. This includes personal inventory, bank inventory, account bank, etc. There are two new material types for the Guardian Cruiser. 8 and 8B, along with two new window types, five and six. They've resolved an issue with the Winter Event buyout not properly processing. And finally Ground Borg enemies will adapt slower to weapons that have a lot of tics per firing cycle.
