Allí conoce a Raluca (Megan?

Sissal Kjartansdóttir Kristiansen on Faroese Knitting

Knitting and wool are so essential in the Faroe Islands that in the early 1800s, exports of sweaters and socks made up about half of the economy. Today, the nation of about 55,000 people has 8+ knitwear brands, 2 active spinning mills, and 70,000 ewes. Sissal Kristiansen, the owner of knitwear company Shisa Brand, started an initiative called The Wool Islands to celebrate the heritage and potential of Faroese fiber. “We owe it to our past and our future to utilise the natural resources that we have, and on the Faroe Islands, that is wool,” she says. The first project of the Wool Islands was a 15-minute documentary that takes viewers on a sweeping journey through the Faroese landscape, meeting shepherds, knitters, and of course sheep. Available to watch free on YouTube and the project's website, the film welcomes you to the small country, which is located in the North Atlantic between Shetland and Iceland. Today, the economy of the Faroe Islands relies on tourism; the film shows how enticing a destination it is for knitters, spinners, and textile lovers. Sheep and knitting are everywhere in the Faroe Islands, but maintaining the quality and value of the local wool depends on visitors, locals, knitters, and consumers to recognize its unique importance. Drawing on the natural colors produced by the native sheep, Faroese knitting patterns are characterized by graphic, highly contrasting stranded patterns that generally carry floats over less than five stitches. Sissal's designs for Shisa Brand feature bold traditional motifs in contemporary silhouettes and scales. Some of Shisa Brand's iconic garments feature black-and-white geometric patterns, and the ready-to-wear items are handmade by local handknitters using Faroese wool. Undeterred by wool's reputation for scratchiness next to the skin, she celebrates the lofty texture, warmth, and silkiness of the dual-coated fleece. Hearing Sissal speak about her home and her passion for Faroese wool will leave you yearning to wear Faroese knitwear, knit with Faroese yarn, and visit the country's wool islands. Raised in privilege, he attended private schools and Georgetown University before becoming involved in drug trafficking in the 1970s. Known in South American cocaine circles as “El Senador,” Luis worked with powerful cartels, including Escobar's Medellín cartel, the Cali cartel, and Venezuela's Cartel de los Soles, building extensive smuggling networks across Latin America, the Caribbean, and the U.S. In 2000, Luis was arrested in a global operation that involved the DEA, FBI, and Colombian authorities. After being held accountable for over 10 tons of cocaine, he cooperated with U.S. authorities, providing critical information on cartel operations and serving five years in prison. Together, Luis and Jesse share insights into the dangerous world of drug trafficking, the decisions that led to Luis's rise and fall, and the lessons learned along the way. To find out more about Luis's story, check out Jesse Fink's book: Pure Narco: One Man's True Story of 25 Years Inside the Cartels Borderland is an IRONCLAD Original Learn more about your ad choices.

Navia and Oreo are two perfect pups who really need to get out of the shelter and into their forever homes. Navia is a one-year-old caramel swirl; Oreo's an 8-month-old fudge swirl. They play super well together, but don't need to be adopted together, though we don't think they'd mind hanging out and snuggling on the couch after wearing themselves out with an enthusiastic romp around your backyard. These two fantastic dogs have special reasons why they are featured this week: Navia is our longest term adoptable dog - she's been with us since April of this year, though we really don't understand why she hasn't been snapped up. She plays well with everybody and was a champion in her 4th of July foster home. Oreo is a newer resident, but he finds the shelter environment very stressful and hurts himself in his kennel. He is spending his nights with one of the staff who thinks he is just about the best puppy she's ever met! He's done well with the four other dogs in his foster home, though can be an annoyance to older dogs (what puppy isn't?) Navia and Oreo are both bully mixes; Navia is about 50 pounds and we think Oreo will be about the same. They both are mostly housetrained, spayed/neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and heartworm negative. Neither have lived with cats, but with proper introductions and some training we think they might do just fine. Both are available at Berrien County Animal Control for just $30. Come meet them at Berrien County Animal Control at 1400 S. Euclid Benton Harbor M-Th 9-5:30, Fri 9-2:30 or this Saturday from 9-12.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Working together in a Philadelphia yarn store, Kate Gagnon Osborn and Courtney Kelley learned how to help customers choose the right yarn for a project, welcome in timid new knitters, and create samples to help move yarn out the door. They learned what didn't work (donut-shaped balls of yarn that hopped off the shelves and tangled, patterns that used a few yards of a 100-gram skein) and what did (unfussy classic yarns, wearable sweaters, and lots of fun-to-knit hats). They founded Kelbourne Woolens in 2008 to offer yarns and patterns to local yarn shops like the one where they met. Their academic and artistic backgrounds gave them a love of fibers—both studied weaving and dyeing—but much of what they've learned in business has been gleaned through trial and error, common sense, and their extraordinarily collaborative partnership. They have developed a slightly eclectic grouping of yarns based on natural fibers: a range of colorwork-friendly 100% wools, a trio of heathered and tweed yarns milled in the Donegal tradition, some lightweight summer cottons, a mohair blend, and several other projects at various stages of development. Their Germantown yarn, named for the Philadephia neighborhood and the centuries-old American wool yarn tradition, was fueled by Courtney's love of history and Kelbourne's desire to offer a domestically grown and spun yarn that welcomes knitters at all levels. In addition to developing yarns for the Kelbourne Woolens label, they distribute a small number of other yarn companies, bringing their yarns to American knitteyarn stores. That includes Faroese company Navia, which preserves the knitting and agricultural heritage of a tiny group of North Atlantic islands, and Misha & Puff, a knitwear company that offers a RWS-certified line of yarns and patterns. Having recently opened a retail space attached to their warehouse in the Mount Airy neighborhood of Philadephia, Kate and Courtney now have their own space to welcome knitters in person, experience the currents of the knitting world, and learn to suppport other yarn shops. Let's end Season 4 with another interview with a Series Regular, shall we? I'm so happy to have Melissa Navia on the podcast. I've known her for years as a working actor in NY, booking co-stars and guest stars in some of our favorite NY shows. During the pandemic, Melissa booked the dream gig, a Series Regular role of Lieutenant Erica Ortegas on the incredible Paramount+ show: Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. The second season is debuted on June 15th and has already been renewed for a third season.  On the television side, Navia's most recent credits include recurring on CBS's Bull and AMC's Dietland. She also recently guest starred on NBC's New Amsterdam and Showtime's Billions and Homeland.  On the big screen, Navia has appeared in a variety of indie films and shorts. In 2013, she won the award for Best Actress at the Wild Rose Independent Film Festival for her leading role as ‘Dawn' in “The Paragon Cortex.” Navia has also appeared in films like “Sleeping with the Fishes,” “Bel Canto,” “The Chosen,” “Hymns,” and “What It Was,” among others. In March 2020, she made her Off-Broadway debut in the world premiere of the highly praised “Bundle of Sticks” from J. Julian Christopher at INTAR Theatre. Navia is Colombian-American. She plays the banjo and is also the creator of the upcoming essay collection and stand-up show, Girl With Short Hair. In this episode, we talk about: • First audition she booked with her agent was Girl Most Likely with Kristin Wiig and first co-star on The Affair • Joining SAG-AFTRA with advice to actors on when they should join • The story of how she booked her first guest star on Billions, which included losing out to another role • The crazy story of choosing between a second episode of Billions and a role on Homeland • If she change how she approached self tapes that helped with booking her series regular role on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds • How the callback for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds went and how she felt when she found out she booked the role • Working with the co-Showrunners and crew, including Akiva Goldsman (who I have worked with on the feature film Winter's Tale, but who also did films like A Beautiful Mind, I am Legend, Cinderella Man, and more) • Great story: How wardrobe gave her a heads up about a sword fight scene • Tips and encouragement for actors who want to book a Series Regular • How her creative ventures like writing and stand up help her as a creative/actor Guest: IMDb Wikipedia Instagram Twitter Variety article on new show DOC Host: Instagram: @MentorsontheMic @MichelleSimoneMiller Twitter: @MentorsontheMic @MichelleSimoneM Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/mentorsonthemic Website: www.michellesimonemiller.com Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/user/24mmichelle If you like this episode, check out Becoming... He is the co-author (with Jesse Fink) of Pure Narco: One Man's True Story of 25 Years Inside the Cartels. What We Discuss with Luis Navia: Why did Luis Navia -- a Georgetown student and the privileged son of an affluent sugar trader -- get involved in the illicit international cocaine trade with the most ruthless and infamous Mexican and Colombian drug cartels? How did Luis move between 200 to 300 tons of cocaine (roughly worth $10 billion) over the course of 25 years -- and live to tell the tale? Why did Luis insist on carrying out his business without a weapon -- in spite of being regularly surrounded by the perpetrators of unimaginably brutal violence? What are the logistics for smuggling massive amounts of cocaine over international borders with limited space and personnel? How did Operation Journey, an anti-narcotics effort coordinated across 12 nations and led by the United States and Great Britain, finally put an end to Luis' lucrative cocaine trafficking career?
