Send us a textHey Pickles! We hope this finds you well. This week in our Main Topic, we're taking a look at some legislation that is basically the EATS act in sheep's clothing. The Food Security & Farmer Protection Act ,(S.1326) is a bill that has all the same language as the EATS Act and will be terribly detrimental to the welfare of animals and the environment. Please contact your elected officials and insist that they vote no on S. 1326.You can find your congressional representatives here: https://www.congress.gov/membersOur Noteworthy segment is all about the Canadian vegan restaurant chain, Odd Burger, and the sad news that they have scrapped their plans to expand to the US because of the political climate, republican backed tariffs, and the trade war started by the Trump administration. Our Vegan Restaurant SOS this week spotlights Unbeetble in Schenectady, NY. They have a really unique place with a retro game room, amazing cocktails, and a huge menu of vegan food!We also have a new Listener Shout Out, and a ton of our usual shenanigans! Thanks so much for sharing some of your day with us. Today we're talking about an important piece of legislation that we want to see defeated. The EATS Act will impact the rights of individual states, farmers and our food supply. Our lobbyist, Marty Irby, is the President and CEO of Capitol South, a national lobbying and PR firm based in Washington, D.C. Marty joins us to explain what it's all about – and how moms can help defeat this bad bill.
The past year was busy on the animal-wellness front. Not only did Animal Wellness Action and the Center for a Humane Economy see some major wins outside of Congress, we worked to set up major legislative victories for when the 118th Congress returns for its second and final year. In this podcast, Wayne Pacelle, president of the groups, and Jennifer Skiff, director of international, review those wins and set the stage for 2024. Victories include: The Supreme Court's upholding California's Prop 12 and affirming the state's right to exclude from its markets products from animals kept in extreme confinement. The persuasion of Nike, Puma, and New Balance to stop sourcing products from hunted kangaroos. Developing opposition to the EATS Act, a sinister bill that would undo the ability of states to enact animal-welfare protocols that may impact other states. The inclusion of animal-welfare standards into the requirements products must satisfy in order to be labeled “organic”—a legally binding designation putting first-ever farm animal welfare rules into federal law. “I call the act a poison pill, because really, what it is, is if it ever gets inserted into the farm bill or if it gets passed on its own, it prevents all of the animal centered organizations, all the environmental organizations, all the family farm and rural community organizations that push back against factory farming. It wipes out all of the progress that they've made.” Aaron Cohen is the senior director of advocacy at Farm Sanctuary. I asked Aaron to come on the show because I wanted to talk about some important things happening in our government right now. Starting with the delayed passage of the Farm Bill. The Farm Bill covers laws that govern food and farming and has a tremendous impact on farming livlihoods, how food is grown, and what kinds of food are grown. A group of Congressional lawmakers are pushing to include the Ending Agricultural Trade Suppression (EATS) Act as part of the 2023 Farm Bill. If passed, the EATS Act would have serious implications for animal welfare and every ounce of progress that the animal protection movement has made against factory farming. It could also have a huge effect on farmer well-being, worker safety, the spread of zoonotic diseases and pollution. It'd be disastrous.

There are some big things going on in animal welfare law right now that need our help. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Best Use of 2 Minutes this Month (U.S.), published by Rockwell on August 7, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Actions that have a large impact sometimes don't feel like much. To counteract that bias, I'm sharing arguably the best use of two minutes this month for those in the U.S. Background In May, the US Supreme Court upheld the ability of US states to require certain standards for animal products sold within their borders, e.g. California's Prop 12, which banned the sale of animal products that involve certain intensive confinement practices. It was a huge victory! But after their defeat in the Supreme Court, the animal farming industry has turned to Congress, pushing the EATS Act.The proposed legislation would take away state power to regulate the kind of agricultural products that enter their borders. Essentially, if any one state permits the production or sale of a particular agricultural product, every other state could have to do so as well, regardless of how dangerous or unethical the product is and regardless of existing state legislation. Just a small sample of laws that could be subverted by the EATS Act include those governing: Chemicals in baby food containers Harmful pesticides in communities and applying them directly to crops for human consumption Arsenic in feed for animals slaughtered for food and other poison control Child labor Puppy mills Wildlife protection Pollutant and emissions standards, e.g., bans on spraying sewage on crops directly before they are sold to people Fire hazards Drugs that contain opioid properties and alcohol and tobacco sales to minors And, of course, legislation like Proposition 12 that improves animal welfare requirements and has been a dominant focus of the pro-animal movement. 2 Minutes of Action 10 seconds: Send a written message to your legislators ~1.5 minutes: Call your legislators Find them Call your one U.S. representative and two U.S. senators (found in the federal section), ideally during business hours Read a script like this one: As your constituent, I urge you to oppose the Exposing Agricultural Trade Suppression' (EATS) Act (S. 2619/HR 4999). This is a dangerous, regressive bill that will undo decades of protections for farmed animals and cause them to endure even more suffering for the profits of animal agricultural interests. It would also have devastating consequences for humans and the environment."Note that there is another bill known as the EATS Act of 2023, which is Enhance Access To SNAP. Please be specific that you are asking them to oppose the Exposing Agricultural Trade Suppression Act. For more information, see: (1), (2), (3). Thanks for listening.
