The Federal Emergency Management Agency might undergo a major change to its IT operations if President Donald Trump's nominee to lead the Department of Homeland Security unit is confirmed. Cameron Hamilton, Trump's pick to lead FEMA, told Senate lawmakers during a Wednesday hearing some of the tools and technology that FEMA uses are a bit antiquated and that if he's confirmed, he's planning to do a significant IT overhaul of the entire agency for better accountability. Hamilton would be the first permanent leader of FEMA in Trump's second term. The agency has gone through four different acting administrators, including Hamilton, whose stint lasted from January-May 2025. The instability at its helm is representative of the turmoil throughout FEMA, which has seen its net workforce contract by nearly 4,000 since 2025. More than half of those departures occurred in the first four months of 2026, according to OPM's Federal Workforce Data website's latest update in April. FEMA was especially impacted by the historically long DHS shutdown earlier this year, with its operations scaled back to the bare minimum. The Environmental Protection Agency has run artificial intelligence pilots on “everything,” but its chief information officer only wants subject matter experts to be using the technology at a high level. CIO Carter Farmer said last week that while the agency has piloted AI to review public comments and analyze large scientific datasets, he still wants experts to review outputs. Farmed explained: “Something we tell our staff quite regularly is if you're not an expert in the subject matter you're using AI for, you probably shouldn't be using AI because it can be very convincingly wrong. If you're not an expert at that, validating those outputs is very hard.” Another reason why using AI can require more experience: “Prompt engineering is a real skill,” Farmer said, and proper use is rarely plug-and-play. He added that: “Having to learn how AI works — and how the back end of it actually works — is very helpful in how to think about how you should be using this tool.” But the agency's daily use of AI is less high-stakes. Farmer said the EPA's biggest focus currently is using AI for “low-level” or “low-risk functions” like email drafting and creating presentations. Did you know the ocean contributes at least 50% of the world's oxygen? We often talk about what's happening on the land in farming on the podcast - but what's happening in the oceans, in both fishing and farming, also deserves our attention, as Alistair and I tease out in this show - the parralels are striking regarding what's going on in both globally. Alistair Allen has been an activist since he finished high school, working his way up to Captaining a Sea Shepherd ship and is now Antarctic and Marine Campaigner at the Bob Brown Foundation. He's also incredibly skilful at explaining the full picture of a ‘bad thing' and all of the downstream effects harming people, animals and the planet. We talk: Krill Fishing and the havoc it is wreaking on Antarctica and beyondOcean Current Slowdown and Why This MattersFactory Farming of Salmon and the devastating impact in Tasmania and globally. What we can all do to change both consumer habits and lend our signature and voice to these issues. I hope you find this helps you understand the “factory fishing and farming” happening in our oceans, looking at these two different, yet connected, issues. I learned SO MUCH. In this episode of the Shift AI Podcast, Steve Mantle, Founder and CEO of Innov8.ag, Raj Khosla, Dean of the College of Agricultural, Human, and Natural Resources at Washington State University, and John Cox, soil scientist and fresh produce industry operator, join host Boaz Ashkenazy for a wide-ranging panel conversation on how AI and emerging technology are transforming agriculture from the ground up.Steve, Raj, and John each bring a distinct lens to the conversation — startup founder, academic dean, and hands-on operator — and together they paint a vivid picture of where precision agriculture has been and where it is going. The discussion opens with the human side of farming: the generational knowledge, seasonal intuition, and field-level pattern recognition that has defined agriculture for centuries. The panel also covers infrastructure realities, edge computing, rural connectivity gaps, ERP systems that still require on-premise servers, and the economic pressures pushing farmers to demand AI that delivers margin today, not in five years. The conversation closes with each guest sharing their two-word vision for the future of AI in agriculture: physical AI, bright and better, and hopeful foresight. This episode is essential listening for anyone who wants to understand how AI is moving beyond the office and into the fields, orchards, and packing houses that feed the world. Ongoing resistance challenges by sheep and cattle worms to drenches - what a headache for us!! We're now needing alternative, non-drench strategies to work alongside a more limited and targeted use of effective drenches to beat worms. Might forage crops help reduce the need for regular, repeated drenching of our lambs and calves? YES, potentially! Forage crops fit perfectly into the worm-battling, whole farm based 'FARMED' approach endorsed by Wormwise (F=Feed, A=Avoidance, R=Refugia, M=Monitor and ED=Effective Drenches). https://beeflambnz.com/knowledge-hub/PDF/wormwise-resource-book Forage crops work in at least two different ways to battle worms - based on the FARMED approach to worm control. Compared to pasture feeding, crops can deliver better ruminant nutrition (feed = F) and help animals avoid ingesting large numbers of infective L3 worm larvae (avoidance = A). Our latest podcast dives deep into detail around forage crops vs worms. Listen in to hear more about how and why forage crops might be the extra tool in the toolkit you've been looking for to help win the battle against worms.

The Gulf Coast is one of the last places in the world where there is still a major wild oyster harvest. Lately, though, that harvest is in trouble. In this episode, the second in a two-part series on the future of seafood, produced in partnership with WWNO's Sea Change, we ask: What can the downfall and resurrection of the Louisiana oyster tell us about a future in which the ocean is a farm? This episode is dedicated to the memory of FERN staffer Katie Gardner, who passed away after a brave struggle with cancer. Katie was a special person – a good friend and trusted colleague of all of us at FERN – taken too young. Our thoughts are with her family and loved ones.

Fish feed in aquaculture is at the center of a complicated global story that most people never hear about. In this episode, Andrew sits down with marine biologist and policy expert Marine Cusa to explore the hidden world of fishmeal, fish oil, feed ingredients, and the surprising connections between aquaculture, wild fisheries, West African communities, and even penguin populations in Antarctica. Marine breaks down what actually goes into the pellets fed to farmed fish, why transparency is lacking in the supply chain, and how her genetics research is uncovering the real species being used in fish feed. The conversation reveals why feed matters for sustainability, human nutrition, local livelihoods, and the future of aquaculture as demand for seafood continues to grow. Whether you're new to the topic or already deep in fisheries science, this episode opens the door to a critical but overlooked part of marine conservation. Dig deeper into why Singapore's food sustainability targets have changed. Synopsis: Join Natasha Ann Zachariah at The Usual Place every Thursday as she unpacks the latest current affairs with guests. The original goal was for farms here to produce 30 per cent of the country’s nutritional needs, which include fish, eggs and vegetables. Now it's 20 per cent of Singapore's fibre and 30 per cent of protein needs by 2035. Natasha speaks with Ken Cheong, chief executive of the Singapore Agro-Food Enterprises Federation and Ray Poh, founder of Artisan Green, an indoor farm that grows pesticide-free crops – about what measures are needed to help local farms grow and why egg farmers are doing well. What will help every farm become a "good farm" and should we have CDC-type vouchers to get consumers to buy local produce? Highlights (click/tap above): 1:31 Why was the initial goal so difficult to achieve? 4:37 Economies of scale lowers operational costs 7:55 Why transport is the biggest bugbear for local produce 21:56 Why local eggs are safe to be eaten half-boiled 28:52 Will CDC vouchers push more to buy local produce? As President Trump plans to bail out soyabean farmers and China goes to South America for supplies, how will UK animal feed be affected by the turmoil? How should insects be farmed? Is their welfare important? We hear from a professor of animal sentience who says the way farmed insects are being viewed is changing. The illegal sport of hare coursing is on the rise in the Vale of Glamorgan, causing damage to farms and stress to farmers. Presented by Anna Hill and produced by Beatrice Fenton.
Farmed animal sanctuaries are the heart of the animal advocacy movement. Our guest today, Zoe Novic, Executive Director of CAPE (Center for Animal Protection and Education), knows this well as she grew up on a sanctuary in the Santa Cruz hills. Zoe has a diverse background that includes two years in the Peace Corps in Indonesia, a Master's in Public Health, and leadership roles at The Humane League, Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, and Greener by Default, Zoe has expertise in grassroots organizing, public health policy, and advocacy. On the podcast, Zoe discusses the significance of the human-animal connection in comprehending and understanding nonhuman animals. She talks about how sanctuaries serve as acts of resistance, providing physical spaces where we can shape the world as we envision it. She and Hope also discuss how sanctuary and rescue efforts have been devalued in recent years, with current animal advocacy funding and philanthropy philosophies moving away from funding direct animal care and how that is impacting the movement. Zoe emphasizes the importance of emotion in advocacy, highlighting how it can often prompt action more effectively than logic or reason. She further explains how sanctuaries deeply evoke emotions. Additionally, Zoe shares her public health background, underscoring the intricate connections between this sector and animal agriculture.Resources:CAPE: Center for Animal Protection and EducationSonoma County VegFest, September 27, 2025Film: Called to RescueSupport this podcast:Hope for the Animals PodcastCompassionate Living

Omega-3 fatty acids have long been lauded for heart health benefits. Yet, emerging research now points to an even more profound impact, directly on our most complex organ: the brain. Today, we delve into the critical, often misunderstood, role of omega-3s in cognitive function, mental well-being, and even the prevention of neurodegenerative conditions like dementia. We are joined by Dr. Bill Harris, a globally recognised authority in omega-3 fatty acid research. Bill is a Professor at the University of South Dakota and has over 300 peer-reviewed publications. His foundational work includes pioneering studies on fish oil in the 1980s and shaping American Heart Association scientific statements. In this episode, Dr. Harris - along with ZOE's Chief Scientist Professor Sarah Berry - illuminate why most individuals may be operating with suboptimal omega-3 levels, and the tangible implications this has for mood regulation, anxiety, and long-term brain resilience. We navigate nuances between omega-3 types like EPA and DHA, debunk common misconceptions surrounding plant-based sources and mercury content in fish, and explore the precise methods for assessing and improving your own "Omega-3 Index." When I first started drinking Mezcal, I was told that there were some agaves that couldn't be farmed — that could only grow wild. And I still here that narrative some two decades later. And it still doesn't make sense to me. So I did the only logical thing: I asked a farmer.Agave Road Trip is a critically acclaimed, award-winning podcast that helps gringx bartenders better understand agave, agave spirits, and rural Mexico. Firefighters across the country have been tackling more wildfires this week - from the Mourne mountains in Northern Ireland to the Scottish Highlands and North Yorkshire moors. These fires in rural areas are difficult to fight. In the Mournes more than 140 fires have been reported in the past few days and firefighters say most were started deliberately. Various countryside organisations, including the Countryside Alliance and the CLA alongside farming unions have been raising awareness of the dangers of wildfires and ways of preventing them. The Ulster Farmers Union is calling for more grazing and controlled burning in some protected areas to reduce the risks. We're focusing on farmed fish this week and salmon really dominates this sector. It's not without its critics who say production is at the expense of the environment and fish welfare. However the industry in Scotland says its continuing to change and improve. We visit an island site owned by Norwegian fish farmer MOWI which believes that farming in deeper more remote waters will help solve some of the problems. The first asparagus of the season is one vegetable that's widely anticipated and valued and one Scottish farm has found a way of edging ahead of most of the others by making use of redundant fruit polytunnels.Presenter = Charlotte Smith Producer = Rebecca Rooney
The Scottish Farm Business Survey has revealed a big drop in average farm income, falling by 51% in its latest figures for 2023/4. The President of NFU Scotland, Andrew Connon, tells Caz Graham that farm profits are being squeezed by increased costs including interest rates. As talks continue to hammer out a trade agreement between the UK and the US, the President of the NFU in England, Tom Bradshaw, remains bullish that the UK Government will stand firm on food import standards. And we visit a trout farm in Wiltshire as part of a week focussing on aquaculture.Presenter: Caz Graham Producer: Sarah Swadling

Are plant-based meats ultra-processed, synthetic junk? Or is factory-farmed meat the real chemistry experiment? In this episode, I break down the biggest myth about plant-based meats—the idea that they're somehow "fake" compared to conventional meat. After my brother-in-law smugly called my veggie burger “synthetic,” I did some digging… and let's just say, the irony is delicious. We'll look at what's actually in plant-based meats, whether they count as ultra-processed foods, and—most importantly—what factory-farmed animals are pumped full of to keep them growing unnaturally fast. Spoiler alert: It's not vitamins and love. So, if you've ever had to defend your plant-based choices against someone eating hormone-fed, antibiotic-soaked meat, this one's for you. #205: Organic California field and row crop farmer Scott Park details the success he's found with his low-input, targeted tillage operation for a room full of real organic certified farmers. Primarily a tomato grower for canneries, Scott's does not shy away from sharing his experiences with slippery price negotiations and the headaches around the regenerative movement's lack of enforceable standards. Scott's full talk and excellent slides can be viewed on our YouTube channel:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rdGiGqNTf2M Scott Park and his son Brian run Park Farming Organics in Meridien, CA and are known for investing excess time, money, and effort into thoughtful experiments aimed at growing food in concert with nature. Scott was the main speaker at our Farmer Friday event this past September, which was held one day before at our conference at Churchtown Dairy in Hudson, New York - Real Organic: A World Movement.https://parkfarmingorganics.com/To watch a video version of this podcast with access to the full transcript and links relevant to our conversation, please visit:https://realorganicproject.org/scott-park-normal-ca-farm-farmed-abnormallyThe Real Organic Podcast is hosted by Dave Chapman and Linley Dixon, engineered by Brandon StCyr, and edited and produced by Jenny Prince. The Real Organic Project is a farmer-led movement working towards certifying 1,000 farms across the United States this year. Our add-on food label distinguishes soil-grown fruits and vegetables from hydroponically-raised produce, and pasture-raised meat, milk, and eggs from products harvested from animals in horrific confinement (CAFOs - confined animal feeding operations). To find a Real Organic farm near you, please visit:https://www.realorganicproject.org/farmsWe believe that the organic standards, with their focus on soil health, biodiversity, and animal welfare were written as they should be, but that the current lack of enforcement of those standards is jeopardizing the ability for small farms who adhere to the law to stay in business. The lack of enforcement is also jeopardizing the overall health of the customers who support the organic movement; customers who are not getting what they pay for at market but still paying a premium price. And the lack of enforcement is jeopardizing the very cycles (water, air, nutrients) that Earth relies upon to provide us all with a place to live, by pushing extractive, chemical agriculture to the forefront. If you like what you hear and are feeling inspired, we would love for you to join our movement by becoming one of our 1,000 Real Friends:https://www.realorganicproject.org/real-organic-friends/To read our weekly newsletter (which might just be the most forwarded newsletter on the internet!) and get firsthand news about what's happening with organic food, farming and policy, please subscribe here:https://www.realorganicproject.org/email/

PREVIEW: DINOSAURS/ANT FARMERS/FUNGI: Smithsonian Institution researcher Ted Schultz explains the fresh thinking that ants farmed for food the fungi that abounded in the organic waste from the burning, dying forests and jungles of the K-T extinction event 66 million years ago that killed the dinosaurs and made room for mammals -- and ant farmers. The “dewilding” effects of fish farming and mariculture are in the spotlight this week. Farmed fish can impact marine ecosystems in several ways, and surprisingly one of those is the effect it has on consumer perceptions of the impact of eating farmed fish, as researchers Becca Franks of NYU and Laurie Sellars at Yale suggest. Meanwhile, Manu Prakesh and colleagues at Stanford University in the US have found a remarkable plankton that can traverse the depths of the oceans by ballooning to five times its size, giving clues as to how an important carbon sink actually works. And Monika Bright at the University of Vienna has found animals and tubeworms living in the very rock below volcanic hydrothermal vents. Life finds a way… …But not always. 445 million years ago the second worst mass extinction event wiped out countless species of life on earth. But why? This week astronomer Chrysa Avdellidou of Leicester University and colleagues say they have found the origin for a famous meteor event that also happened around that time. What are our options when it comes to seafood? Farmed fish is often raised with antibiotics and even fed food coloring to dye its flesh to make it appear healthier. The process of wild-caught fish regularly leaves other sea creatures trapped in the nets, only to be discarded and wasted. Sustainable aquaculture shows us that there is a way to raise and harvest fish (and eat them) that is better for them, the environment, and our health! Ty Walker runs Smoke In Chimneys, a revitalized 1930s trout hatchery in Virginia, and today, he reveals what's possible when it comes to identifying and enjoying quality seafood. Today, Ty goes over what's going on with most farmed fish and industrial-scale wild fishing. He reveals issues with overfishing, the "fresh" label on our seafood, and microplastics in our oceans and fish. He points out that sustainable aquaculture is much like regenerative farming; it presents a sustainable and viable option that honors our environment and nurtures our well-being.
