3117: How Indeed Uses Research to Drive Strategic Action Across Teams

Why do so many businesses struggle to turn insight into impact? At the X4 Summit in Salt Lake City, I sat down with Adam Hagerman, UX Research Director at Indeed, for a refreshingly candid conversation about how his team has helped reshape the company's approach to research, collaboration, and decision-making. In a tech culture that values autonomy and individualism, aligning people around a shared understanding of user needs is no small feat—but it's exactly what Adam has been working on. In this episode, we unpack how Indeed built a shared research framework that breaks down silos, creates a common language, and encourages teams across the business to talk to one another in more meaningful ways. Adam shares how his team tackles the challenge of information overload by focusing on relevance over volume—and how measurement itself becomes a shared system of accountability across functions. We also discuss the evolving role of AI in research, including how Adam's team uses it to reduce cognitive overhead, accelerate workflows, and spark better questions. But perhaps most importantly, Adam talks about the mindset shift needed in times of rapid change—and why embracing uncertainty and remaining curious is more productive than clinging to old ways of working. Whether you're a UX leader, researcher, or business decision-maker looking to get more from your data, there's plenty here to reflect on. How do you ensure your insights aren't just collected, but acted on? How do you build trust in research across teams? And how can we all get better at asking, “What problem are we actually trying to solve?” Let me know what resonated with you. What challenges have you faced in translating research into action within your own organisation? I'd love to hear your thoughts.

In this episode, Cindy Esliger explores the difference between acceptance and resignation. When career roadblocks present themselves, there's a temptation to throw up our hands in despair and resign ourselves to defeat. But a better option is acceptance. Cindy explains how acceptance means seeing the situation for what it is and guides us on how to make the most of it.   The differences between resignation and acceptance are the differences between giving up and channeling our frustration into something productive. When we're passed over for a promotion or someone else takes credit for our idea, it's unfair and annoying but resignation is about giving up in despair. It gets us nowhere. Instead, acceptance allows us to say that life isn't fair but allows us to brainstorm our next move forward. It keeps us productive. Cindy shares three tips for maintaining career goals and ambitions while still calling out bad behavior when warranted: 1) Pick our battles, 2) Build a support system, and 3) Protect our energy. Cindy delves into how each step can assist with processing our feelings of frustration and anger without giving in to them. She instructs us on how to turn that disappointment into action with a properly measured response. Acceptance is not giving up. It's what keeps us moving despite roadblocks.   Resources discussed in this episode:Guide to Turning Roadblocks into ResilienceAstronomic AudioConfidence Collective—Contact Cindy Esliger Career Confidence Coaching: website | instagram | facebook | linkedin | email

Today we're having an honest conversation about business. Some people might disagree but this is something that I've found to be true for me being in the business, brand and sales world for over 25 years.   The harder you work, the more success you can have.   So often we get into business and we see other people doing it and it seems easy. You start a business and you show up online and then you get customers. Then you get into business and you realise that it's not that easy.   I was thinking about this recently when I was reflecting on a few clients that I've worked with this year and it's neither good nor bad, it's just an observation and I'm going to say it's an observation on my own business as well. It's what I'm calling the Levels of Strategic Action to Results Measure or SAR Measure.   But before I share the SAR Measures or levels that I see after working with and coaching people for over 20 years, there is a story that I hear Alex Harmosi share.   He said that when he was starting his business, he had a mentor and the mentor told him to put flyers out to get the name of his gym out there. So Alex went and printed 300 flyers and distributed them and nothing really happened. He called his mentor and say - this doesn't work, and his mentor said what did you do. He told him - I've put out 300 flyers. His mentor said you test with 5000 then you put out 5000 a day after that or 150,000 flyers a month.   Alex said- I realised that I may have been doing the right thing all along, I was just doing too little of it. We do things for too short, too little and not enough time and wonder why something isn't working and that's where the Strategic Action Levels come in.   So let's break it down and this is going to be dependent on your business, what you do, the uniqueness of it, but I still think that these are 90% of the time true.   Level 0 - The hobby or doing it just for fun - Your business is a bicycle This could be a hobby A side hustle that's just for fun You're making a bit of money and happy with that.   Level 1 - The Slow Burn - You're driving a 2nd hand everyman brand car You have some sales coming in but you're still trying to work out your sales process You might be in your business full-time, but you're just ticking along and just getting started You're going from $0 - $50/$80k. It's paying the bills and you might be paying yourself a bit but it feels tight. You're trying to manage your mind because you didn't realise it was going to be this hard and that you were going to have to learn so many new things You potentially can't afford support right now, but you would love to have some help. You're learning how to manage your money in the best way but still trying to work it out.   Level 2 - The Flow - You're driving a luxury brand but it's an older model The mid-range action taker - you're consistent and it's going well but not everything is the way you want - still things to fix and set up You might be hitting $100-$250k You're full-time in your business, you're busy doing some of the key things. You've got solid foundations and clients coming to you but You know that you could be making things better, and more efficient but you haven't focused on fixing those problems or it's on the to-do list.   Level 3 - The Pro - You're driving a luxury brand car current model You're at the $300-$900k level You're in flow and you know exactly what needs to happen and when. Your business is doing what you want it to do, you have great systems You have a team and strategies in place and you're sharing content regularly that is getting you the clients that you want. You have funnels in place that are working for you You understand and have a full view of your metrics so that you can make informed decisions You have a brand, marketing, and sales strategy and you're working with those with a clear growth plan Now it's about scaling in a bigger way and handing things over to others who do it better while you build and grow your brand.   Level 4 - The Power Player - You have a driver or a private jet (Alex Harmozi/Amy Porterfield level) You are the talent and you have a team that runs your business for you with you leading the charge.   Let me know if this resonates with you and which level you're at and what level you want to get to.   Make sure you share this and tag me on Instagram when you do @suzchadwick   ********************   NEXT STEPS: APPLY FOR THE AMPLIFY MASTERMIND - Click here to apply (scale) BOLD BUSINESS ACADEMY - Click here to Join now (foundational) **** FREE: Simple Business Buckets training - Understand what to focus on in your business https://suzchadwick.com/simple-biz-buckets-sign-up  Masterclass - 5 powerful strategies to grow your business, brand & revenue https://suzchadwick.com/bba-masterclass-registration  **** LINKS: Website: www.suzchadwick.com  Instagram: www.instagram.com/suzchadwick  TikTok: www.tiktok.com/suzchadwick

What's the WORST that can happen?  This is a common question I ask my clients. It's become SO common, I find myself asking it in everyday situations when I feel a bit uncomfortable doing something new or trying something different. But what happens when you hear a little whisper on your heart - a dream in the making - will that question be enough to encourage ACTION?  In today's podcast I'm having a conversation with my business coach and mentor, Stefanie Gass. She's the host of the .5% globally ranked podcast, The Stefanie Gass Show where she teaches Christian women how to get clear on their niche, start a podcast, and grow a successful online business, God's way.  She gives four steps you can take when you hear that little nudge - four steps that encourage taking the brave first step! After you've heard the conversation you may be ready to pursue that nudge, whisper, dream, calling. In addition to the Nonviolence Report (covering nonviolence in the world which is often overlooked by mainstream media), Stephanie and Michael welcome two inspiring guests on this episode of Nonviolence Radio: director of the Regional Institute for the Study and Practice of Nonviolent and Strategic Action in the Americas, Maria Belén Garrido, and the executive director at the Center for Mediation, Peace, and the Resolution of Conflicts based in the US and Ecuador, Jeff Pugh. Together they explore effective ways to expand the scope of nonviolent action through local, grassroots education initiatives. This means courses that are geared towards – and often taught by – by people on the ground, members of the communities in conflict. This model has been extremely effective throughout Latin America where trainings and courses are bringing people together to learn strategies and exchange stories. This more decentralized kind of education is better able to address particular, situation specific issues; it uses local languages and presents its ideas free from academic jargon. This has led to a growing network of nonviolent activists and movements, from Peru and Venezuela to Ecuador, Honduras and Nicaragua. "To supplement courses and blogs, there is now a database dedicated to collecting examples of nonviolent action in Latin America. This powerful resource highlights not only the wide range of nonviolent actions that are at play in this part of the world, providing activists with concrete examples of practices that work, but also reveals its long history: we decided to create this database, to promote the research for other scholars, but also for the activists to see new tactics, different tactics, as Jeff mentioned, not just protest. Because strategic nonviolent action is not just protest in the streets, but all the different actions that people, in their own country, that speak their own language, are doing – or they have been doing in the last 20 years."The work done by Maria and Jeff and their organizations helps to show how communities in conflict  already have a tremendous amount of strength and knowledge which can be channeled towards peace.

MBL Minute: Strategic Action And The Politics Of Fear And Anger   Episode Notes   Strategic Action   We need to recognize the difference between actions we are taking and the results we are creating.  Our actions need to “move the needle” toward the Vision of our desired results.  We need to shift the focus from how much we do to the impact of those actions.  Most of us work too hard on activities that are urgent but not strategically important to our personal success or the success of the organization.  By focusing more on activities that are less urgent but move us in the direction of our Vision we ultimately achieve better results that require less effort and we have more fun along the way.   The Politics of Fear and Anger   A government or a system of justice can pass laws and they can enforce those laws but they cannot legislate what is in an individual’s mind.  Time will not change this reality.  We need to be doing the emotional labor required to change our minds if we want to achieve better results that are sustainable.    Thanks so much for listening!  If you like the show please subscribe to Master of Business Leadership and rate and review it wherever you get your podcasts.  It really does help new listeners discover the show.   Program:  http://bit.ly/MBLProgramOverview   iTunes https://itunes.apple.com/ca/podcast/master-of-business-leadership-podcast/id1335503365   Stitcher https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/master-of-business-leadership?refid=stpr   Libsyn http://masterofbusinessleadership.libsyn.com   MBL Inc. www.MasterofBusinessLeadership.com   Phil Johnson on LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/philipjpjohnson   Music: https://www.bensound.com

More exclusive vegan-world news from Kris and our team as we report back on our national ice cream tour, our success in getting kangaroo meat off the shelves at a national chain, and our 2nd Day of Action protests against Tesco sparked by the horrific conditions of Hogwood 'horror' farm which supplies the supermarket. In this episode: Viva Festivals are coming soon to Birmingham and Brighton Interviews from our big Vegan Camp Out featuring Dr Neal Barnard and US speaker and psychologist Melanie Joy PhD our 2nd wave of "Day of Action" protests against Tesco's continued refusal to stop taking supplies from Hogwood 'horror' farm a success as Pets At Home finally stops stocking dog food that contains kangaroo meat what the Summer-loving public thought of the treats on offer from our awesomely tasty 7 Day vegan Ice Cream Van tour music from Macka B. Melanie Joy, PhD, is a Harvard-educated psychologist, celebrated speaker, organizational consultant, trainer, and relationship coach. She is the author of the award-winning book "Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs, and Wear Cows: An Introduction to Carnism", as well as "Strategic Action for Animals" and "Beyond Beliefs: A Guide to Improving Relationships and Communication for Vegans, Vegetarians, and Meat Eaters". Neal Barnard, M.D., F.A.C.C., is an adjunct associate professor of medicine at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences in Washington, D.C., president of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, and founder of Barnard Medical Center. As president of the Physicians Committee, Dr. Barnard leads programs advocating for preventive medicine, good nutrition, and higher ethical standards in research. He hosts four PBS television programs on nutrition and health and is frequently called on by news programs to discuss issues related to nutrition and research. This August saw the annual Official Animal Rights March founded by UK animal rights organisation Surge. The Official Animal Rights March is an annual march founded by UK animal rights organisation Surge. The march began in London in 2016 with 2,500 vegans and in 2017 the march doubled to 5,000 vegans marching in London for animal liberation. Our Viva!licious ice cream van tour was extremely successful! The positive atmosphere and incentive of free ice cream enabled us to speak to members of the public who would not normally be as receptive to conversations about veganism. The tour launched in Cardiff on 31 July and continued to Blackpool, Leeds, Southend-On-Sea, Margate, Brighton and finally London. In every city we had an overwhelmingly positive and high response. Throughout each three hour event we had queues of 15 – 20 metres of people waiting to try vegan ice cream. Because the kangaroo meat industry is one of the most brutal and violent in the world, consumers are unwittingly buying into the largest slaughter of land-based wildlife in history. That's why Viva! is pleased to have scored another victory in our long-standing kangaroo campaign as companion animal supplies retailer Pets at Home has discontinued the sale of dog treats that contain kangaroo meat. Viva! contacted Pets at Home after an animal advocate reported seeing kangaroo meat dog treats on sale. Pets at Home CEO Peter Pritchard responded positively, confirming that as the treats do not meet their ethical standards, they would discontinue sales. The music in this episode is by Macka-B,  one of the UK's leading dancehall reggae toasters and patron of the Vegan Society.
