I am tremendously honored to sit down with one of the most fascinating figures in the grappling world—Reilly Bodycomb. Reilly is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt, a Pan-American Sambo Champion, and an expert in dynamic submission grappling. He teaches at Bay Jiu-Jitsu in San Francisco, where he continues to refine his unique blend of Sambo, Jiu-Jitsu, and wrestling-based strategies.I first discovered Reilly through his incredible 2015 match against the legendary Eddie Cummings, a bout that showcased his aggressive and technical approach to leg locks and positional dominance. Since then, I've been a huge admirer of his work, and getting to speak with him today is truly a privilege. In this episode, we dive into Reilly's martial arts journey, his thoughts on integrating Sambo and Jiu-Jitsu, and his approach to teaching and training. We also discuss his experiences in competition, the evolution of grappling, and how he continues to innovate in a constantly changing sport.Reilly is not only a competitor but a true thinker of the game, and his insights are invaluable for anyone looking to improve their understanding of leg locks, positional control, and effective strategies for modern grappling.Links:https://www.rdojo.com/https://www.instagram.com/rdojo/https://bayjiujitsu.com/Salt Electrolytes use code FWB for 15% off. https://saltelectrolytes.com/?fwb Become a VIP member for only .99 a month, get ad free, uncensored, early episodes podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/foreverwhitebelt/subscribeInstagram @foreverwhitebeltshow.Go buy your Forever White Belt swag at teespring.com/forever-white-belt.Linktree https://linktr.ee/foreverwhitebelt

Very often people will ask me about the effects of body type on jiu jitsu. It appears that many people hold the belief that there is an optimum body type in jiu jitsu that confers advantage over other body types. Even a moments reflection will reveal that this is false. A look at the medal platform at the world championships will always show a wide variety of body types which are represented in no particular order of success. If I ask you to name for me the five most successful jiu jitsu champions of all time, I guarantee your list will show big disparities in body type. There is no dominant body type on the medal stands. There is however, a dominant body ETHOS. Champions always maximize the ability of whatever body they have been born with to perform the skills of the sport. Whilst there is no one body type that dominates the sport, there is a need on everyone's part to maximize what you can do with your body that will improve your jiu jitsu performance. Everyone's body has an optimal weight and conditioning that maximizes its performance for a given activity. It is your duty to find what that is for you and to maintain yourself close to that ideal (getting closer if competition is near). Thus any body type can win a world championship, but only one way of maintaining that body of yours will maximize your ability to perform the skills you hope to win that championship with. Here are three EBI champions. All three are very different somatotypes - Garry Tonon is a classic mesomorph. Gordon Ryan an ectomorph and Eddie Cummings an endomorph masquerading as a mesomorph. Yet all three have found a way to maximize their very different bodies to perform the skills they needed to win. Thus any body type can win a world championship, but only one way of maintaining it will maximize your chances of doing so. - John Danaher, Body type and BJJ. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/donavon-riley/support

John Danaher-black belt Eddie Cummings, winner of the fourth Eddie Bravo Invitational and ADCC 2015 participant, spoke to me about a range of topics related to grappling. Notably, he calls himself a 'scathing indictment' of how the sport has treated the training and use of leg locks.
A lot of anti gun metaphors, a lot of fact corrections, and all the angsty muster we have about stupid headlines. Topics covered: Fergie, EBI 15, Jason Hayden, Jon Calestine, Geo Martinez, John Battle, Mike Davila, Eddie Cummings, Polaris Pro, Bellator, Roy Nelson, UFC, and Donald Cerrone. We're so much fun.
