I read this and learnt so much in such a short time.It is really awesome to have someone like this come on the show who can back up so much of what I talk about with years of research, data and statistics, I also love that she was a teacher and still is, because it helps get across my point, that it isn't the teacher's fault or the school's fault, it is the education system as a whole which is failing to teach. If you agree with my beliefs about the school system or want to find out more about it then this is a great episode for you...Today we cover:Her journey as a math teacherHer transition from turkey to Australia and how different the education system isWhy giving students a "C" or an average mark is pointlessWhat school is failing to teach usWhy teachers are so important and why the standard for teaching is too lowHow people struggle to think for themselvesImportance of creativityAnd so much more.Follow Majeda:Website: https://www.globaleducationacademy.com.au/Follow Byron:Byrons Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/byron__dempsey/D.Y Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drivenyoungpodcast/Tik Tok: https://vm.tiktok.com/J8a8hS3/FREE Ebook Download: https://drivenyoung.com/stocks-101/JOIN THE FACEBOOK GROUPJoin Byron LIVE and other listeners of the show!Apply for the Driven Young Program: https://drivenyoung.com/coach/Support the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/drivenyoung)

The brain's programming promotes survival of the animal and the species. This programming has guided mammalian development and adaptations for survival in the unpredictable and perilous environments in which most mammals live. And memory is what enables us to learn by experience, therefore memory is essential to survival. Without the ability to learn, store, and recall how we should respond to environmental dangers and to know when and how to run or fight, the individual has little chance of survival. There is only a very small formal distinction between "learning" and "memory" and the study of one becomes a study of the other, which is why an understanding of memory is so important to us as educators. A teaching philosophy (also known as an educational philosophy, a teaching statement, a philosophy of education, a philosophy of teaching, etc.) is a self-reflective statement of your beliefs about teaching and learning. In addition to general comments, your teaching philosophy should discuss how you put your beliefs into practice by including concrete examples of what you do, or anticipate doing, in your classroom. Defining, explaining, and clarifying your educational philosophy will enhance your ability to align it with your teaching practice. Listen to this episode to find out exactly what they are, what they should contain, what format they should be written in, and how to begin writing or updating your own teaching philosophy statement. We know that exercise is great for our bodies, but what about for our brains? Does going for a run, hitting the gym, or lifting some weights really affect the health or strength of our brains? The answer is yes according to current research! Exercise is as good for brains as it is for our bodies! An abundance of evidence supports the importance of exercise in students’ ability to learn. Our brains were shaped and sharpened by movement and we continue to require regular physical activity in order for our brains to function optimally. A few of the recommended resources that I reference in this episode are the books, "Brain Rules" by John Medina, "The Art of Changing the Brain" by James Zull, "The New Science of Learning" by Terry Doyle and Todd Zakrajsek, “Brain Matters” by Patricia Wolfe, and “Mind, Brain, and Education” by David Sousa. Percentage Grades and the use of Zeros

Percentage grading systems that attempt to identify 100 distinct levels of performance distort the precision, objectivity and reliability of grades. And when averaging on a 100-point scale, the use of zeros is particularly damaging to a student’s grade. The mathematical problem with zeros is they represent an extreme score and their effect on the grade is always exaggerated. To recover from a single zero in a percentage grade system, a student must achieve a perfect score on a minimum of nine other assignments. In this episode, Dr. Colin Roche provides two alternatives to the outdated grading procedures just described. One is to use the minimum 50 grading policy that many schools are currently doing. The other is to use an integer grading system of 0 – 4. This episode is part of series where we take a long, hard, honest and uncensored look at the way we grade students in our schools today, including how we report their learning progress. A few of the many resources that influence our approach are the books, "On Your Mark" by Thomas Guskey, "A Repair Kit For Grading" by Ken O'Connor, and "Learner-Centered Assessment on College Campuses" by Mary Huba and Jann Freed. When most students come into our classrooms, they bring with them an unhealthy attitude toward grading, which has often been instilled in them by parents and past teachers. In this episode, Dr. Colin Roche kicks off a series of episodes on the subject of Grading, Assessment, and Evaluations where he takes a long, hard, honest and uncensored look at the way we grade students in our schools today and report their learning progress. Most aspects of grading and reporting have been around forever and reflect traditions that have been a part of our education system since the early 1900's. Though these traditions are entrenched in our education culture and part of everyone's school experience, it doesn't mean that they work, are accurate, or are in the best interest for our students. In this first episode of the series, Dr. Roche defines and discusses formative and summative assessment, and why teachers first need to understand their uses before designing their assessment instruments. He goes on to describe why effective grades need to be accurate, meaningful, consistent and support learning, while reviewing the three underpinning issues of fairness, motivation and objectivity & professional judgement. A few of the many resources that influence our approach are the books, "On Your Mark" by Thomas Guskey, "A Repair Kit For Grading" by Ken O'Connor, and "Learner-Centered Assessment on College Campuses" by Mary Huba and Jann Freed.
