In this episode, we have a very special guest, Seattle, WA Black Belt Sonia Sillan. Sonia is an incredible entrepreneur, a dedicated mother, and the owner of two Jiu Jitsu academies—Combat Arts Academy and Burien Brazilian Jiu Jitsu—as well as a fitness gym. Her journey to success was far from typical. In this episode, you'll hear the fascinating story of how Sonia, then a Blue Belt, was unexpectedly left in charge of an academy with almost no business experience. Despite the many ups and downs, she navigated the challenges and built a thriving business with low attrition rates. Whether you own an academy, dream of running one someday, or are simply curious about what it takes to operate a successful Jiu Jitsu academy, you won't want to miss this episode. Sonia was super gracious with her time, and I greatly appreciated her transparency in sharing her story. In our conversation, Sonia shares insights on believing in oneself, having confidence, and staying true to one's vision. We dive into her sales process, website philosophy, and the value of focusing on the customer's goals. We also discuss crucial aspects of running a martial arts academy, including the importance of pricing, coach development, and training, creating standard operating procedures (SOPs), and ensuring a safe and inclusive environment for all students. Sonia highlights the benefits of women's programs and the Girls in Gis organization, shares her personal journey of recovery and prevention and discusses the tools and applications she uses to manage her academies, including Zen Planner and Discord. Is your coach injured? Are you a coach carrying some battle scars? A huge challenge for anyone who has done BJJ for many consecutive years is working around injury. The toughest part is that as a coach your business depends on your body, s,o how can you rest and heal when your students need you to roll with them everyday?Well maybe there is an alternative. Both Joey & JT have had to battle through injuries as Personal trainers and BJJ Coaches. The fear that all your students will leave if you don't roll everyday is keeping you injured. Having assistant instructors and avoiding the FOMO of not rolling is a key step to making a Jiu-Jitsu Academy a sustainable business.Pride is also an element that keeps instructors on the mats making injuries worse because they don't want to appear weak. This actually sets the tone for a gym culture where everyone trains injured. Whether you coach or not, protecting the asset- your health is the foundation to your business. This discussion gives some good examples of how you can manage injury, take time to get healthy again and still see your business grow.Get Stronger & More Flexible for BJJ  with the Bulletproof For BJJ App- Start your 7 Day FREE Trial:  https://bulletproofforbjj.com/registerStay Hydrated with Sodii the tastiest electrolytes in the Game! Support Aloha Roll:On Tuesday, August 8, devastation hit Lahaina, Maui. The entire town of Lahaina was burned to the ground including many family's second home, Aloha Roll Academy. Now that several days have past, we know there is a need more than ever for our beloved academy. Students are practicing each other's garages and in the parks. Coaches are looking for short term and long term solutions to bring back some sort of normalcy for the kids, parents and adults of West Maui. All fund will be use for the rebuild of our Jiu Jitsu Academy. https://www.gofundme.com/f/aloharollrebuildSupport the familiesIn the heart of our community beats a spirit stronger than any challenge, a bond unbreakable, and a commitment that runs deeper than blood. Today, we stand united to face a devastating adversity that has struck at the very core of our values. The essence of our BJJ family is compassion, resilience and unity. We are a vibrant community where the echoes of laughter and the spirit of camaraderie resonate through every roll on the mats. But now, a storm has swept through our lives, leaving 48 families shattered in its wake. Close to 60% of the community lost their homes and entire possessions. +80% of them lost their source of income. We know what it means to stand shoulder to shoulder, to offer a hand when it's needed most, and to embrace each other's pain as our own. The culture we've nurtured isn't just about submissions and techniques; it's about extending our arms to lift one another up. Today, we come together not just as practitioners of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, but as brothers and sisters bound by a shared commitment to rebuild what has been lost. https://www.gofundme.com/f/aloharollcommunityThanks for listening to My White Belt!Order your My White Belt Shirts here: https://www.mywhitebelt.com/shopDonate to support our work here: https://cash.app/$JimTrick or Venmo @Jim-Trick (0423 if they ask) Join our free, My White Belt Wednesday, newsletter here: https://www.mywhitebelt.com/Follow us on Instagram @mywhitebeltSupport My White Belt when you shop ORIGIN x JOCKO FUEL by using discount code: TRICK10 https://originmaine.com/?ref=iRlDmaPt8CdIHSBighorn Athletics is the official grappling tape of My White Belt!Use code Mywhitebelt to save 10%https://www.bighornathletics.com/Check out Tactition Trays for your Every Day Carry! https://tacticiantrays.com/Use code: TRICK10 to save $$$Submit podcast questions here:https://www.mywhitebelt.com/podcast

I apologise for some blurriness on one of the cameras at certain stages throughout the podcast, as there was a setting error. None the less, get ready for an awesome show as we hang out with Ivan Voronoff, my brother, and owner of the Melbourne Jiu-Jitsu Academy which also happens to be my neighbour at Jungle HQ where we lift weights together and record the podcast. Ivan has become more than just a neighbour and business associate - he's someone I genuinely care about and feel thankful for. He's been a great source of support and has taught me some valuable life lessons throughout our time spent together. In this podcast, we dive deep into the world of jiu-jitsu. We talk about how it's evolved over time, the different styles it has from its Japanese and Brazilian influences, and the buzz around the rising popularity of grappling in general. I always enjoy and feel privileged to hear first hand stories about his life growing up in Brazil and learn of the similarities between Brazilian and Australian people and their cultures. Together, we busted through those stigmas and discussed how the jiu-jitsu mats can be a safe haven for men to open up about their feelings and struggles after training. It's a unique environment where guys can let their guards down without the fear of judgement and find support. Powerful stuff! Ivan is a real role model, especially for the youth of our generation. His kids program is the heart and soul of the Melbourne Jiu Jitsu academy and his purpose as a coach and human being. I know you will enjoy, just like I did, hearing him speak on the importance of jiu jitsu, over coming adversity and instilling important life values within the training environment. Join us on the journey through jiu-jitsu. We're not only celebrating the physical awesomeness of it all but also shining a light on its impact on mental health and personal growth. Welcome to ‘The Open GuardCast Jiu-Jitsu Podcast', which is a project dedicated to promoting jiu-jitsu professionals. Tune in each wk, Wed at 2pm CST, for interviews, & current events going on in the world of jiu-jitsu and submission grappling! Your host is Danny O'Donnell. In addition to hosting this podcast, he is an MMA journalist contributing here at Bloody Elbow, as well as at Black Belt Mag. O'Donnell himself is a BJJ black belt who trains at the Marcio Andre Jiu-Jitsu Academy in Phoenix, AZ. Recently, we introduced a jiu-jitsu current events portion of the show. This week we were joined by our guest Moses Solis, a brown belt under Jay Pages. Our guest interview this week was with Tom DeBlass. Tom is a Renzo Gracie black belt, owner & head instructor of Ocean County BJJ, and a former MMA fighter who competed in the UFC, Bellator, and Ring of Combat. The guys discussed Tom's early days in the sport, becoming an influencer in jiu-jitsu & martial arts, signing to ONE Championship, & much more. — At 35:37 Q1: What was your life like before you found Martial Arts, what were you doing & where was your life going? — At 35:58 Q2: Were there any MMA fighters you followed in the early days that inspired you or made you want to get on the mats? — At 37:10 Q3: What was it like when you first stepped inside a Jiu-Jitsu Academy to train? — At 37:52 Q4: Your academy has an amazing competition team but you also have those people that maybe want to train a couple days a week, keep in shape, etc., is it hard for you as an academy owner to find a balance? — At 39:39 Q5: You mentioned there was a time in your life when you were lacking hope & experiencing despair, was competition something that would pull you out of those moments? — At 41:44 Q6: Can you discuss the transition from being on a stable career path as a School Teacher with a steady paycheck to becoming an Academy Owner? — At 43:35 Q7: What made you want to go into MMA and split your time between BJJ competition & MMA? — At 44:50 Q8: On social media & in the community you are someone people look to for inspiration, was that something that just evolved with the Academy over time or did you want to be a leader in the community? — At 46:53 Q9: What advice would you give someone who is an up-n-coming MMA fighter, jiu-jitsu trainer who has done everything they need to do in the training room but wants to be in a position like you, or feels they are a leader and could brand themselves better, is it just “being authentic” or is it more than that? — At 48:31 Q10: One of the things that's really cool, because of all the work you have put in over the years, is you just recently signed to ONE Championship... Can you talk about how long of a process went into getting that deal done & your impressions of the deal and what it can bring you? — At 50:44 Q11: What ONE has been able to build over in Asia is really incredible, the following: they have all of Asia supporting ONE Championship & the numbers are really staggering... — At 53:54 Q12: With everything ONE has been doing lately with signing submission grapplers & having Super Fight Grappling Matches on their 10th anniv. ONE-X card, it seems like they really see a future in submission grappling... — At 50:12 Q13: I hope one day your body is feeling great so you get to be a part of some of these grappling matches, or maybe some of your students, that would be incredible too… — At 53:44 Q14: Another huge event for jiu-jitsu you have been a part of organizing at the trials level is the ADCC and this year's event is going to be the biggest of all time. What are your expectations for the 2022 ADCC? — At 56:26 Q15: Talk about the book you just released, where people can find it & what they can expect from your book? — At 58:05 If you enjoy our shows, "heart" us here on SC, or "like" & share over on your BE Presents Podcast platform of choice. Michael is a second degree Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt under André Galvão, of the elite Atos academy, Michael is widely recognized as one of the most talented competitors of his generation. Michael started making waves in jiu-jitsu's competitive scene early on, winning his first world title as a blue belt in 2011, he followed his early success winning 2 more “Mundial” gold medals at purple and brown belt, and his victories are far too extensive to read on and on about. In October 2019, Michael moved to Colorado where he founded his own academy alongside fellow Atos teammate, YJ Lee, and they named it Lōgōs Jiu-Jitsu Academy. I'm gonna be honest this was one of my favorite episodes, there are so many great takeaways I got from it, and I get the sense that you will as well. It became immediately clear that Michael is a highly intelligent, self aware, and present individual. These characteristics manifest themselves in very interesting ways, one of which is that Michael has a very high fight IQ. Not only is he aware of what and how he needs to train and iterate, but he also has earnest respect and reverence for his competition. I feel lucky to have engaged with Michael in a very interesting transitional period in his life, going from single focused competitor to an academy owner/leader role where responsibilities and priorities can vary greatly. Michael is refreshingly calm, candid, and laid back with me and more importantly himself. An important highlight I'd like to make which could get lost is the importance of his father Michael Liera Senior (also a black belt), they seemed to have a very special connection in that Michael Senior exposed Jr to various interests (a lot more than many others have done) only to finally land on BJJ. This type of special mentorship is the foundation of Michaels's greatness thus far, I mean his other instructors were Saulo Ribeiro and Andre Galvao for goodness sake! Some housekeeping notes, in the episode Michael makes several references to "HQ", which refers to ATOS headquarters in Southern California. Jim Woolford epitomizes what it means to be a great late enforcement officer. He's the police chief of the Pontiac police department (the highest-ranking officer in a police department) and has worked in the field for over two decades. In this conversation, Jim and I get right on the topics that dominate our newsfeeds and television screens: Is Law Enforcement systemically racist? Do cops need to be better trained? Should we defund the police? I even got Jim's thoughts on the recently signed “House Bill 3563”, a massive police-reform bill that eliminates cash bail, makes all officers wear body cams, and outlaws chokeholds among many things. All this and much more in this fantastic episode of The Paul Garcia Show! This Show is Sponsored by these great local businesses!Popejoy Plumbing, Heating, Electric, and Geothermal The prized Popejoy team offers a full array of services that ensure your critical plumbing, HVAC, electrical, and geothermal systems will continue to operate at peak performance for many years to come! On this episode the boys talk about not only what to look for in a Jiu Jitsu Academy but how to ensure you’re running a good one. If you’re thinking about starting out in BJJ you want to make sure you find a school that’s a good fit for you. There are some toxic gyms out there, so you want to know what the signs are before you sign up. If you’re part of a toxic gym I suggest extricating yourself from it ASAP and find a school with more positive attributes. Best not to get involved in one in the first place though. A few quick tidbits to help you find out what a gym is all about is to observe a class or two and talk with the instructor or instructors after class to get a feel for their personality types. If possible talk to a few white belts to get their impressions as well. Definitely sign up for a free trial to see if this school jives with your personality and everyone seems helpful before signing up. Whether you’re looking just for self defense, competition, or hobby, the school should treat all their teammates with respect. Make sure the gym your looking into does that. If you’re a gym owner or even just part of a gym, go way out of your way to make new people feel welcome and not like they’re a nucance. Or at least don’t be a dick...
