Ellie Burrows Gluck always imagined she’d have a fruitful career in the film industry. But once she actually achieved this dream, she realized the joy just wasn’t there. With a personal commitment to never squander life’s opportunities, Ellie made it her mission to find a purpose that perpetuated positivity and a career she truly loved. After searching inside and out for the answer, Ellie discovered an unwavering passion for mindfulness. She established MNDFL after noticing her bustling home of New York City lacked quiet and accessible meditative spaces to find moments of inner peace. With a mission to provide welcoming, friendly studios made for anyone, MNDFL is on its way to redefining modern mindfulness. Listen to Ellie’s story and learn how she finally found joy—and business success—by sharing the benefits of mindfulness and meditation. Ellie Burrows Gluck is the Chief Executive Officer of MNDFL, as well as a Vedic Meditation teacher, certified personal development coach and writer. After graduating magna cum laude from Northwestern University, Ellie served as an executive in the film business for a number of years, focusing on the business side of film: producing, selling, financing and finding new talent. When her meetings began to evolve into coaching sessions around effective communication and interpersonal relationships, she chose to pursue mindfulness in a moremeaningful way. Deciding to travel the world as a spiritual tourist, Ellie ultimately returned to New York where she received her Certificate in Coaching from NYU. Shortly thereafter, in 2014, she hatched the idea for MNDFL with her co-founder and friend Lodro Rinzler. Along the way, Ellie was exposed to Vedic Meditation. What started as a daily practice turned into a full-blown love affair, and beginning in 2017 Ellie completed her 2000-hour teacher training program under master teacher Théo Burkhardt. Ellie Burrows, CEO and co-founder of MNDFL, a NYC based meditation studio, stands out as a walking reminder to meditate. But, while she opened MNDFL in the West Village, and has already expanded to the Upper East Side and Williamsburg, Ellie’s journey towards starting MNDFL wasn’t all that straightforward. For 7 years, she worked in the film industry and didn’t quite feel the same passion her colleagues did. In 2013, she quit her job and travelled the world as a spiritual tourist. But when she returned to New York, she struggled with her meditation practice as she found it difficult to meditate in her own home. She liked group meditation but there wasn’t a non-religious place that didn’t require days-long commitment. MNDFL was thus born out of her personal needs and as it turns out, many others wanted the same things. Todays guest is peaceful AF but not preachy AF, which is unique and awesome for a meditation expert, enthusiast and entrepreneur. Ellie Burrows is the founder of MNDFL -- a collection of meditation studios sprawled throughout NYC. Ellie grew up in La La Land and was raised in a family in the entertainment business. She decided to go into film because she thought a lot of happiness waited for her there, but she never felt fulfilled and happy in Hollywood the same way her fam did. So she literally went soul searching or as she calls it, she became a spiritual tourist, and discovered the magic and simplicity of meditation. Rather than sparknotes her entire story, I think I should stop talking now and her Ellie do that because otherwise what would be the point of listening to the episode if I tell you everything in this bio, right? So press play to hear Ellie tell her story and remind us that meditation doesn’t necessarily mean plopping your butt on a fancy cushion.   You’ll hear:   How Ellie went from a career in the film industry to now running a meditation business! What she awesomely means by “following the crumbs.” And why you prob want to follow your crumbs, too! How Ellie defines meditation and the diff between mindfulness vs. meditation. The 3 C’s to starting a meditation practice. The type of meditation that I do daily :-) How to make your meditation PORTABLE. (No butts on pillows required.) Do you meditate? Or do you think meditation is the privilege and skill of bearded yogis nestled deep in the Himalayas? Do you say you're 'too busy' to meditate, or that it's 'too hard'? It’s true. Meditation can be hard, without the proper training and support. And if you happen to live in a city, you're in an especially tough position: The stress of urban life basically makes meditation crucial for survival (and happiness) but at the same time, the tempo of city living often makes it impossible to find the time or place to give your practice the dedication it deserves. This is exactly where our guest Ellie Burrows comes in. She is not only an avid meditator, but also lives in New York City. Through her business MNDFL, she's made it not only possible- but easy- for frenzied city dwellers to find the solace of meditation amongst the honking horns and ground-shaking trash trucks. Part of a new, conscious-minded school of entrepreneurs, Ellie has created an urban spiritual oasis, and as a result, has helped inspire a quickly growing network and community of spiritually oriented businesses in The Big Apple. In this fun, and enlightening conversation Ellie shares her personal story of spiritual discovery, the challenges of creating MNDFL, and her vision of making meditation a regular part of life for the average person who has no intention of renouncing civilization in favor of a luxury deprived, monastic existence. For the sake of humanity (and the sanity of our nations cities) please share this episode with a meditator or mindful entrepreneur you know. To your peace, Luke For more about the show Topics Discussed on today's Episode: How Ellie left a career in film to pursue her spiritual path The journey of how her business MNDFL meditation came to be, and how she learned to connect consciousness to her career The current state of affairs in New York city's spiritual community, and the positive effects meditations centers like MNDFL are having on the city The importance of re-branding spiritually centered businesses to appeal to a more broad audience How meditation drop in centers encourage user consistency, and overcoming the challenges of keeping up a meditation practice Seeing the benefits of meditation, and the consequences of losing your practice Facing the reality that being spiritually committed is anything but stardust and moonbeams; it gets uncomfortable The importance of facing your demons, and walking through the many dark nights of the soul Spiritual first-aid kit: the two most powerful tools for overcoming emotional pain Lifestyle recommendations   MY 90-DAY LIFESTYLE DESIGN COACHING PROGRAM Your opportunity to work with me one-on-one. When one steps into MNDFL, it's easy to think you've made a wrong turn. Meditation studios are supposed to be a little dusty, a little impersonal. They certainly do not look like that Hamptons beach house you saw in that design magazine. But MNDFL's founders, Ellie Burrows (chief executive officer) and Lodro Rinzler (chief spiritual officer), had a different idea when they conceived of their new venture: create a drop-in meditation space where one can feel at home (literally), and where the "tradition" is simply soft music, plush couches, and hot tea. The studio on 8th Street in Greenwich Village has attracted lots of attention from the likes of The New York Times, Vogue, and beyond. In Episode 86, hear Ellie describe her own personal journey as well as the unique ideas that brought this pioneering space to life. Visit us at www.MeditateThisPodcast.com.
