Green Signals is a show about railways - its politics, its economics, its people and history. We turn over the issues of the day and talk to the people making the decisions that affect all our lives. We also dig into many of the amazing events in the history of an industry that spans nearly 200 years. Nigel Harris (former Managing Editor and Events Director of the leading industry and opinion forming magazine RAIL) and Richard Bowker (former Chair & CEO of the Strategic Rail Authority) steer the show to make it sometimes controversial, frequently irreverent - but always topical and relevant.

The Great Central Railway is unique. It is the only main line double track heritage railway in Europe. And it's brilliant! However, they are not standing still. They have an ambitious and exciting plan to reunify the two surviving sections of the Great Central Railway to create an 18 mile, living museum of transport, anchored by that unique double track section where it is possible to see steam trains passing each other. A truly exhilarating sight, sound and experience. Green Signals went to the Great Central Railway to have a look behind the scenes – and to find out more about the plans to Reunify!Membership: If you want to see even more from Green Signals, including exclusive content, become a member and support the channel further too.YouTube -https://www.youtube.com/@GreenSignals/joinPatreon -https://www.patreon.com/GreenSignalsGreen Signals: Website -http://www.greensignals.orgMerchandise - http://greensignals.etsy.comNewsletter -http://www.greensignals.org/#mailing-listFollow: X (Twitter) -https://twitter.com/greensignallers LinkedIn -https://www.linkedin.com/company/green-signals-productions-ltdYou can view our legal disclaimer, copyright information and privacy policy here - https://www.greensignals.org/legal/

The dramatic freight only railway line from Saltburn to Boulby potash mine on the Cleveland coast is a truly spectacular railway. Once forming much of the Saltburn to Whitby line, the 12 mile branch to Boulby is a railway delight with steep gradients, semaphore signals, closed stations, jointed track, token block signalling, even a tunnel on the section of the line that is privately owned and of course heavy haul freight trains pulling 1000 tonnes of potash from the mine to Tees Dock on a regular basis.Join us on this exclusive ride with the driveras we travel over this brilliant line from end to end.Membership: If you want to see even more from Green Signals, including exclusive content, become a member and support the channel further too.YouTube -https://www.youtube.com/@GreenSignals/joinPatreon -https://www.patreon.com/GreenSignalsGreen Signals: Website -http://www.greensignals.orgMerchandise - http://greensignals.etsy.comNewsletter -http://www.greensignals.org/#mailing-listFollow: X (Twitter) -https://twitter.com/greensignallers LinkedIn -https://www.linkedin.com/company/green-signals-productions-ltdYou can view our legal disclaimer, copyright information and privacy policy here - https://www.greensignals.org/legal/

Two thirds of all Great British Railways spend will be with the railway supply chain. It's a dynamic environment that is constantly adapting, constantly changing and constantly investing. One of the businesses at the heart of that supply chain is Wabtec and at the moment, they are changing more than most with a £30 million investment to create a new super site, a jewel in the crown of the UK rail supply sector as Managing Director Tim Bentley describes it, in Barton, near Burton on Trent. And recently, Green Signals went to have a good look around this remarkable facility. Over 25 years since the UK's first open access passenger rail service, and the subject still divides opinion. Those for point to services to communities that had been forgotten, competition driving down prices as well as stimulating. Those against point to revenue abstraction not outweighed by the growth and to adding serious performance challenges on an already congested network. One person who has led the charge for Open Access and has been unquestionably successful in the process is Ian Yeowart. He is tenacious, focused and very experienced. Ian's latest venture though, the running of services between Marchwood on a reopened Waterside branch, through Southampton, Winchester and Basingstoke to London Waterloo has been comprehensively rejected by the ORR – and he's not best pleased. I caught up with Ian to hear his views and he is characteristically forthright in his opinions.Membership: If you want to see even more from Green Signals, including exclusive content, become a member and support the channel further too.YouTube -https://www.youtube.com/@GreenSignals/joinPatreon -https://www.patreon.com/GreenSignalsGreen Signals: Website -http://www.greensignals.orgMerchandise - http://greensignals.etsy.comNewsletter -http://www.greensignals.org/#mailing-listFollow: X (Twitter) -https://twitter.com/greensignallers LinkedIn -https://www.linkedin.com/company/green-signals-productions-ltdYou can view our legal disclaimer, copyright information and privacy policy here - https://www.greensignals.org/legal/

On the morning of Sunday 25 May, the Secretary of State for Transport, Heidi Alexander MP boarded the first South Western Railway service to depart London Waterloo. The company's new Managing Director, Lawrence Bowman, has been steadily working hard since to create an integrated SWR and Network Rail team, responsible for both train operations and infrastructure. As Great British Railways continues to develop and form, Lawrence Bowman finds himself in arguably the hottest of all hotseats. The last 11 months has been a challenge though for all sorts of reasons, and those opposed to renationalisation have wasted no time pointing out that at times, performance has dipped below what it was under private operation. As ever, the story is much more complex than that. To find out what has been going on and more importantly what is planned, I have come to Wimbledon Train Care depot to meet with Lawrence and ask what the plan is and how challenging it's going to be to deliver it. Artificial Intelligence is no longer science fiction. It's increasingly science fact. And it's coming to the railway whether we like it or not. GBRX has created the AI Industry Action Plan to show how Britain's railway will move from isolated AI pilots to safe, scalable, system-wide adoption. Green Signals went along to the glitzy launch event for the AI Industry Action Plan at the Science Museum, London, at the end of April to see what the fuss was about – and learn more about the plans and technologies that could shape the way that people interact with the railways for decades to come.Membership: If you want to see even more from Green Signals, including exclusive content, become a member and support the channel further too.YouTube -https://www.youtube.com/@GreenSignals/joinPatreon -https://www.patreon.com/GreenSignalsGreen Signals: Website -http://www.greensignals.orgMerchandise - http://greensignals.etsy.comNewsletter -http://www.greensignals.org/#mailing-listFollow: X (Twitter) -https://twitter.com/greensignallers LinkedIn -https://www.linkedin.com/company/green-signals-productions-ltdYou can view our legal disclaimer, copyright information and privacy policy here - https://www.greensignals.org/legal/

There is considerable debate about the causes of, and future predictions for, climate change. But what is not in any doubt is that our weather has become more unpredictable and extreme. The South West of England has always suffered more than most and the railway has always been at the forefront of meeting the challenge. In 2014, a serious breach of the sea wall at Dawlish caused the railway to be closed for 2 months whilst it, and the sea wall, were rebuilt. 2026 provided an opportunity for the defences to be tested like never before with multiple named storms that battered the region. The Main Lines held up well and were quickly reopened. The branch lines were not so fortunate and the lines to Barnstaple, Okehampton, Looe and Newquay were closed for extended periods. The Tarka Line from Exeter to Barnstaple was closed for around 24 days between January 27th and February 20th, yet this is no sleepy branch line but a vitally important community railway carrying almost 1 million passengers a year, that's a serious problem. I was keen to see what was being done to address the problem and so at the kind invitation of Network Rail, I travelled down to Devon and Cornwall to have a look first hand. The mixture of collaborative working and new technology I saw first hand was really impressive….Credits: Thumbnail image - Balfour BeattyMembership: If you want to see even more from Green Signals, including exclusive content, become a member and support the channel further too.YouTube -https://www.youtube.com/@GreenSignals/joinPatreon -https://www.patreon.com/GreenSignalsGreen Signals: Website -http://www.greensignals.orgMerchandise - http://greensignals.etsy.comNewsletter -http://www.greensignals.org/#mailing-listFollow: X (Twitter) -https://twitter.com/greensignallers LinkedIn -https://www.linkedin.com/company/green-signals-productions-ltdYou can view our legal disclaimer, copyright information and privacy policy here - https://www.greensignals.org/legal/

Chris Gibb is one of the country's most respected and experienced railway operators. His storied career includes a period as Chief operating Officer of Virgin Trains. Few people know how to get the most out of operating the West Coast Main Line as much as Chris Gibb. He's spent time running Scotrail and sitting on the Board of Network Rail. Latterly he's been the Senior NED on the Board of DFTO. He has seen the railway sector from every possible angle. Chris has long been an advocate for taking an holistic approach to maximising the potential of HS2. That extends to taking an integrated approach to rolling stock including how we think about the eventual need to replace the current fleet of tilting trains. Perhaps frustrated by the lack of progress and concerned that decisions may be made that could actually reduce capacity of West Coast Main line services, Chris made a presentation to the All Party Parliamentary Rail Group setting out his ideas. The Government was not impressed and within 72 hours, Chris had been dismissed from his role at DFTO. Green Signals recently met up with Chris to chat about what happened and what happens next. There's no bitterness whatsoever. Just a burning desire that everyone, collaboratively, does the right thing for the future of this most important of rail corridors. It's clear he's not going away.Membership: If you want to see even more from Green Signals, including exclusive content, become a member and support the channel further too.YouTube -https://www.youtube.com/@GreenSignals/joinPatreon -https://www.patreon.com/GreenSignalsGreen Signals: Website -http://www.greensignals.orgMerchandise - http://greensignals.etsy.comNewsletter -http://www.greensignals.org/#mailing-listFollow: X (Twitter) -https://twitter.com/greensignallers LinkedIn -https://www.linkedin.com/company/green-signals-productions-ltdYou can view our legal disclaimer, copyright information and privacy policy here - https://www.greensignals.org/legal/

It is the railway line that survived against all the odds. It became a high profile cause celebre for campaigners and a political football for railway administrators over a long drawn out period beginning in the 1960s with the publication of Richard Beeching's infamous report and ending in the late 1980s with a remarkable reprieve. On 1st May 2026, this glorious railway celebrated its 150th anniversary, a celebration that for many years, look seriously in doubt. Green Signals spent a couple of days on the railway in glorious weather including the all important 150th anniversary day to speak to some of the people and to hear their stories of saving the line back in the 1980s and the work that is done today to ensure the line's present as well as its future.Membership: If you want to see even more from Green Signals, including exclusive content, become a member and support the channel further too.YouTube -https://www.youtube.com/@GreenSignals/joinPatreon -https://www.patreon.com/GreenSignalsGreen Signals: Website -http://www.greensignals.orgMerchandise - http://greensignals.etsy.comNewsletter -http://www.greensignals.org/#mailing-listFollow: X (Twitter) -https://twitter.com/greensignallers LinkedIn -https://www.linkedin.com/company/green-signals-productions-ltdYou can view our legal disclaimer, copyright information and privacy policy here - https://www.greensignals.org/legal/

Britain has a proud history of advanced railway research. It was British Rail who conceived the hugely successful High Speed Train. The BR Research Centre then came up with the brilliant tilting train design of the Advanced Passenger Train until it was scrapped, only for it to reappear years later, when it was sold back to us by a French Italian consortium in the form of the Pendolino. The Railway Technical Centre in Derby was a global centre of excellence. And then at privatisation, we rather lost the plot. The research arm of BR was sold, and research and development became fractured.Fortunately though, the story did not end there and Green Signals recently had an exclusive behind the scenes visit to the University of Southampton where Professor William Powrie CBE and his colleagues are undertaking some amazing research that is not only improving our knowledge, but helping to save hundreds of millions of pounds as well.Membership: If you want to see even more from Green Signals, including exclusive content, become a member and support the channel further too.YouTube -https://www.youtube.com/@GreenSignals/joinPatreon -https://www.patreon.com/GreenSignalsGreen Signals: Website -http://www.greensignals.orgMerchandise - http://greensignals.etsy.comNewsletter -http://www.greensignals.org/#mailing-listFollow: X (Twitter) -https://twitter.com/greensignallers LinkedIn -https://www.linkedin.com/company/green-signals-productions-ltdYou can view our legal disclaimer, copyright information and privacy policy here - https://www.greensignals.org/legal/

Few railway organisations have witnessed as much change in their role and structure over the past 30 years as the Office of Rail and Road (ORR). This, despite being a constant feature of the landscape. And yet the next few years will bring about the biggest changes so far in their role.John Larkinson has been CEO for over 7 years, the culmination of a long and distinguished career in the railway industry. At the end of April 2026, John retires, a pivotal moment for him personally and the industry at large.Green Signals sat down with John recently to chat about his career, his time at the SRA, at the ORR and the highs lows of all that, including his views on rail reform and hopes for the future. It's a very personal discussion and one that anyone interested in the extraordinary period since privatisation of the railway till now will find hugely interesting.Membership: If you want to see even more from Green Signals, including exclusive content, become a member and support the channel further too.YouTube -https://www.youtube.com/@GreenSignals/joinPatreon -https://www.patreon.com/GreenSignalsGreen Signals: Website -http://www.greensignals.orgMerchandise - http://greensignals.etsy.comNewsletter -http://www.greensignals.org/#mailing-listFollow: X (Twitter) -https://twitter.com/greensignallers LinkedIn -https://www.linkedin.com/company/green-signals-productions-ltdYou can view our legal disclaimer, copyright information and privacy policy here - https://www.greensignals.org/legal/

Network Rail is pivotal to whether GBR is a success or not. The reality will always be that Network Rail, with its resources, people, assets and role drives pretty much whether the railway performs day to day both now and in the future.Jeremy Westlake is the CEO. In taking over from Andrew Haines he stepped out of the relative shadow of Chief Financial Officer role into the full glare of the top job. Does he have what it takes to make the transition? And does he have the vision to take Network Rail forward into a future that involves it transferring into Great British Railways whilst at the same making sure it performs? We spoke with Jeremy about those questions and many more in this extremely candid and comprehensive interview.Note - the interview was recorded on Thursday, 26th March 2026 so the dates of some of the events Jeremy refers to in the discussion should be seen in that context. It's the biggest integrated transport undertaking in the world. So it follows that running it and being accountable for its day-to day operation, is one of the biggest jobs in world transport. For Andy Lord, Commissioner of Transport for London (and Commissioner means Group CEO), it's clearly a privilege and a job he relishes despite all the challenges it throws up. From the world famous and iconic London Underground, the much-loved red buses, the DLR, the Overground, the Trams, even the cable car plus the hundreds of kms of cycling superhighways, the job is as varied as the transport modes for which he is ultimately responsible. In this wide-ranging interview, we talk to Andy about his background in aviation, his love of all things London Transport and some of the tricky decisions he must take on a regular basis. Plus, we look to the future and speculate a little on what changes may be on the horizon.Membership: If you want to see even more from Green Signals, including exclusive content, become a member and support the channel further too.YouTube -https://www.youtube.com/@GreenSignals/joinPatreon -https://www.patreon.com/GreenSignalsGreen Signals: Website -http://www.greensignals.orgMerchandise - http://greensignals.etsy.comNewsletter -http://www.greensignals.org/#mailing-listFollow: X (Twitter) -https://twitter.com/greensignallers LinkedIn -https://www.linkedin.com/company/green-signals-productions-ltdYou can view our legal disclaimer, copyright information and privacy policy here - https://www.greensignals.org/legal/

Oxfordshire is a one of the UK's regional powerhouse economies. Furthermore, Rail is big business in Oxfordshire. In 2024/25, the estimated total entries and exits at Oxfordshire stations was some 19.6 million, a 17% increase from the previous year. It's not quite at pre-pandemic levels but the growth is strong. The OxRail 2040 strategy was widely consulted on during September 2025 and now forms the bedrock of Oxfordshire's Plan for rail. But is it targeted, considered interventions or blue sky wish list thinking? In February 2026 , Green Signals went to find out more as well as visit the first real manifestation of the plan, the planned reopening of the Cowley branch.Membership: If you want to see even more from Green Signals, including exclusive content, become a member and support the channel further too.YouTube -https://www.youtube.com/@GreenSignals/joinPatreon -https://www.patreon.com/GreenSignalsGreen Signals: Website -http://www.greensignals.orgMerchandise - http://greensignals.etsy.comNewsletter -http://www.greensignals.org/#mailing-listFollow: X (Twitter) -https://twitter.com/greensignallers LinkedIn -https://www.linkedin.com/company/green-signals-productions-ltdYou can view our legal disclaimer, copyright information and privacy policy here - https://www.greensignals.org/legal/

There's a revolution underway on the railways in the north, and no, it's not Northern Powerhouse Rail, but rather something that will provide the bedrock to anything that NPR may become. Its name? The Transpennine route between Manchester, Leeds and York. We don't hear too much about the Transpennine Route Upgrade outside of the Manchester – Leeds – York corridor although that may be because it's on time and on budget. But it's no less impressive for that – at £11 billion, this multiphase project will transform passenger and freight traffic across the Pennines for decades to come. Over the past few months, Green Signals has been following the project and visiting the area to find out more. And what we've found is impressive. Really impressive. There's still more to do and the project team are under no illusion about that but here's out first major update on the remarkable project that is the Transpennine Route Upgrade. The National Audit Office or NAO is an independent parliamentary body. It is the independent public spending watchdog. It audits Central Government Departments, agencies and NDPBs. But it also carries out value for money audits into the administration of public policy. One such value for money audit was into the recently re launched Northern Powerhouse Rail project, something that will be increasingly under the spotlight in coming years. Green Signals spoke recently with Jonny Mood, Director - Value for Money / Performance Audit at the National Audit Office and who oversaw the Northern Powerhouse Rail audit to find out more.Membership: If you want to see even more from Green Signals, including exclusive content, become a member and support the channel further too.YouTube -https://www.youtube.com/@GreenSignals/joinPatreon -https://www.patreon.com/GreenSignalsGreen Signals: Website -http://www.greensignals.orgMerchandise - http://greensignals.etsy.comNewsletter -http://www.greensignals.org/#mailing-listFollow: X (Twitter) -https://twitter.com/greensignallers LinkedIn -https://www.linkedin.com/company/green-signals-productions-ltdYou can view our legal disclaimer, copyright information and privacy policy here - https://www.greensignals.org/legal/

Select Committees work in both Houses of Parliament. They scrutinise and report on a wide range of activities from the work of Government departments to economics affairs. They run inquiries on specific topics, the outcomes of which are public and many require a response from the government. They are to be taken seriously by all those who are asked to give evidence. The Transport Committee is nominated by the House of Commons to scrutinise the Department for Transport. Its formal remit is to hold Ministers and Departments to account, and to investigate matters of public concern. Ruth Cadbury MP is Chair of the Transport Select having been elected to the position in September 2024. It falls to her to lead the Committee through the scrutiny of the Railways Bill and the creation of Great British Railways. Green Signals recently met up with Ruth to learn more about the work of the Committee, how challenging it can be some times to hold Ministers and officials to account and her views on the Railways Bill.We started though by asking her how she got into politics in the first place…..Membership: If you want to see even more from Green Signals, including exclusive content, become a member and support the channel further too.YouTube -https://www.youtube.com/@GreenSignals/joinPatreon -https://www.patreon.com/GreenSignalsGreen Signals: Website -http://www.greensignals.orgMerchandise - http://greensignals.etsy.comNewsletter -http://www.greensignals.org/#mailing-listFollow: X (Twitter) -https://twitter.com/greensignallers LinkedIn -https://www.linkedin.com/company/green-signals-productions-ltdYou can view our legal disclaimer, copyright information and privacy policy here - https://www.greensignals.org/legal/

The Railways Bill is the most important piece of railway legislation since the 1993 Railways Act that brought about the era of privatisation. The current Railways Bill (and Act) will bring about an era of re-nationalisation. Except it's more complex than that. Great British Railways will be a massive organisation with substantial reach but it will still have to exist in a world of devolution, third party operators notably railfreight, and two thirds of its money will be spent with the UK rail supply chain, private sector companies. Whilst there is broad agreement on the need for change, theBill itself has critics as well as supporters. So we brought together 5 of the brightest minds in rail policy, finance, law and regulation to ask plenty of challenging questions including most important of all, will it make things better? It was an enjoyable and lively discussion!Membership: If you want to see even more from Green Signals, including exclusive content, become a member and support the channel further too.YouTube -https://www.youtube.com/@GreenSignals/joinPatreon -https://www.patreon.com/GreenSignalsGreen Signals: Website -http://www.greensignals.orgMerchandise - http://greensignals.etsy.comNewsletter -http://www.greensignals.org/#mailing-listFollow: X (Twitter) -https://twitter.com/greensignallers LinkedIn -https://www.linkedin.com/company/green-signals-productions-ltdYou can view our legal disclaimer, copyright information and privacy policy here - https://www.greensignals.org/legal/

Private finance and the rail sector are often talked about but frequently misunderstood. And where it is well established in sectors such as rolling stock leasing, it can be divisive with strong and opposing views. Yet the attitude of private investors and in particular their appetite to invest in UK infrastructure seems especially strong at the moment. The Voyager and Super Voyager trains are one of the least loved on Britain's railway. But why is that? Operationally and mechanically, they are robust, reliable and capable. And they're super quick too! Reasons for their unloved status may include their interiors and their underfloor engines. Opinions will always differ on such things. Where opinions differ far less is that their interiors are tatty and tired. Well, that's about to change. On 10 February we were invited to the launch of the first refurbished Voyager at Alstom's Derby Litchurch Lane site. And we rather like it. It's functional rather than fancy, but actually, that's exactly what is needed right now. We spoke to Managing Director of CrossCountry Trains, Shiona Rolfe, had a good look round the train inside to check out the new features and came away looking forward to seeing the first of these refurbished Voyagers in service as soon as possible!Membership: If you want to see even more from Green Signals, including exclusive content, become a member and support the channel further too.YouTube -https://www.youtube.com/@GreenSignals/joinPatreon -https://www.patreon.com/GreenSignalsGreen Signals: Website -http://www.greensignals.orgMerchandise - http://greensignals.etsy.comNewsletter -http://www.greensignals.org/#mailing-listFollow: X (Twitter) -https://twitter.com/greensignallers LinkedIn -https://www.linkedin.com/company/green-signals-productions-ltdImportant Notes:The views and opinions expressed by any guests or interviewees on this channel / podcast are strictly their own and should not be assumed to reflect those of the hosts, the management or the Directors of Green Signals. The Green Signals podcast should not be considered professional advice, and listeners should consult appropriate and qualified professionals for advice tailored to their specific needs. The Green Signals podcast and YouTube channel is provided ‘as is' and none of Green Signals Productions Limited, its Directors, hosts or management are liable for any damages in any form arising from the use of or reliance on any advertisement, product, service mentioned or any discussion about any matter.None of Green Signals Productions Limited, its Directors, its hosts or its management are responsible for any third party advertiser content, claims or representations. The Class 37 is one of the most successful British locomotive designs of all time. 309 locomotives were delivered between 1960 and 1965 and despite even the youngest now being over 60 years old, close to 100 examples still survive to this day, around two thirds of which still run on the mainline.Europhoenix Rail is one such operator of Class 37s. The spot hire business has 11 Class 37s including celebrity locos 37901 ‘Mirlees Pioneer', 37501 ‘Teesside Steelmaster' and 37407 ‘Blackpool Tower'.In a bid to life extend the Class 37's even further whilst also reducing their CO2 and other emissions impact, Europhoenix have converted one Class 37 No. 37218 to run on Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil or HVO. And on 3 February 2026, she took to the mainline to run from Leicester to Barrow Hill and back on a proving run. And best of all, Green Signals were invited along for the ride.Membership: If you want to see even more from Green Signals, including exclusive content, become a member and support the channel further too.YouTube -https://www.youtube.com/@GreenSignals/joinPatreon -https://www.patreon.com/GreenSignalsGreen Signals: Website -http://www.greensignals.orgMerchandise - http://greensignals.etsy.comNewsletter -http://www.greensignals.org/#mailing-listFollow: X (Twitter) -https://twitter.com/greensignallers LinkedIn -https://www.linkedin.com/company/green-signals-productions-ltdImportant Notes:The views and opinions expressed by any guests or interviewees on this channel / podcast are strictly their own and should not be assumed to reflect those of the hosts, the management or the Directors of Green Signals. “The evidence is that Driver Only / Driver Controlled operation [DOO / DCO] is safer than being dispatched by a conductor or even a platform member of staff.” That's the view of Mark Phillips, the highly experienced Chief Executive of the Rail Safety and Standards Board (RSSB). The RSSB was established in 2003, in the aftermath of the Ladbroke Grove rail crash. It is a membership organisation that is owned by and serves Britain's rail industry. It is the independent safety, standards and research body for Great Britain's rail network and so it's role is pivotal and wide ranging.Mark has been CEO since 2016. In 2026 he celebrates 40 years in the rail industry. I met up with him to chat about RSSB; what it does and to whom it is accountable, as well as tackling a number of the more emotive issues facing the railway at the moment.Membership: If you want to see even more from Green Signals, including exclusive content, become a member and support the channel further too.YouTube -https://www.youtube.com/@GreenSignals/joinPatreon -https://www.patreon.com/GreenSignalsGreen Signals: Website -http://www.greensignals.orgMerchandise - http://greensignals.etsy.comNewsletter -http://www.greensignals.org/#mailing-listFollow: X (Twitter) -https://twitter.com/greensignallers LinkedIn -https://www.linkedin.com/company/green-signals-productions-ltdInstagram -https://instagram.com/greensignallersCredits - Thumbnail Image: Govia Thameslink Railway.Important Notes:The views and opinions expressed by any guests or interviewees on this channel / podcast are strictly their own and should not be assumed to reflect those of the hosts, the management or the Directors of Green Signals. Curzon 2 (dubbed the Bellingham bridge by the HS2 team) isgoing to be the highest viaduct on HS2 when it's complete. An enormous 25-metre-high truss will transform Birmingham's skyline – you can already see it looming over the surrounding warehouses and industrial units if you take the train into Birmingham.Unlike most of HS2's other viaducts, which sit low in thelandscape, this one is the complete opposite. It crosses the existing railway line, which is itself already on top of a viaduct, crossing over a road. So, this will be the highest viaduct both from ground level to track level and from the ground to the top of the structure.Richard and Charlie were lucky enough to get the opportunity to visit the site and climb to the top (the equivalent of walking to the top of a seven-storey building)!Membership: If you want to see even more from Green Signals, including exclusive content, become a member and support the channel further too.YouTube -https://www.youtube.com/@GreenSignals/joinPatreon -https://www.patreon.com/GreenSignalsGreen Signals: Website -http://www.greensignals.orgMerchandise - http://greensignals.etsy.comNewsletter -http://www.greensignals.org/#mailing-listFollow: X (Twitter) -https://twitter.com/greensignallers LinkedIn -https://www.linkedin.com/company/green-signals-productions-ltdInstagram -https://instagram.com/greensignallersImportant Notes:The views and opinions expressed by any guests or interviewees on this channel / podcast are strictly their own and should not be assumed to reflect those of the hosts, the management or the Directors of Green Signals. The venerable Mk 3 coaches that date from the 1970s and 1980s have served Chiltern Railways well for over 15 years now but everything is about to change. On Tuesday, 27th January, Chiltern Railways officially launched the first of its 13 Mark 5a trainsets, complete with Class 68 locomotive all decked out in a striking blue livery. Named Chiltern Explorers, the winning name in a customer vote, Richard had a chance to ride on the launch train and meet up with Managing Director of Chiltern Railways, Richard Allan, to learn what the arrival of the Mark 5As mean for Chiltern Railways and its customers. The Great Western Railway. Brainchild of legendary engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel. Chocolate and Cream coaches and quintessential English Branch lines.GWR has always done things a little differently whether it be broad gauge tracks or diesel hydraulic locomotives. There's the Great Western Way and there's the wrong way surely someone must have said at some point….Today, GWR conforms more than it has in the past, but it still stands out. It's elegant green liveried trains still serve the great cities of Cardiff, Bristol and all points west, right through to the extremities of the rail network in Penzance. It's Managing Director is Mark Hopwood CBE, a veteran of the rail sector and a highly respected railway operator. Much has been achieved during his tenure but nonetheless, he still faces some significant challenges. I met up with Mark rather appropriately at the Didcot Railway Centre, the home of the Great Western Society, to talk about GWR - the highs, the lows and what may lie ahead.Membership: If you want to see even more from Green Signals, including exclusive content, become a member and support the channel further too.YouTube -https://www.youtube.com/@GreenSignals/joinPatreon -https://www.patreon.com/GreenSignalsGreen Signals: Website -http://www.greensignals.orgMerchandise - http://greensignals.etsy.comNewsletter -http://www.greensignals.org/#mailing-listFollow: X (Twitter) -https://twitter.com/greensignallers LinkedIn -https://www.linkedin.com/company/green-signals-productions-ltdInstagram -https://instagram.com/greensignallersImportant Notes:The views and opinions expressed by any guests or interviewees on this channel / podcast are strictly their own and should not be assumed to reflect those of the hosts, the management or the Directors of Green Signals. Northern Powerhouse Rail, or NPR, was announced by the Government to much fanfare on 14 January 2026. Up to £45 billion will be invested in the creaking railway infrastructure of the North. A new line between Birmingham and Manchester is going to be under consideration. Years of dither and delay ends now, trumpeted the Secretary of State for Transport. Many cheered for joy but a few scratched their heads. Surely the £11 billion Transpennine Route Upgrade has been underway for a few years, and won't that provide the baseline on which much of NPR between Manchester and Yorkshire will be built in any scenario? And why is a new line from Birmingham to Manchester such a great thing when the Government say it will be decades away and yet HS2 had planned to build it next before Rishi Sunak cancelled it?Membership: If you want to see even more from Green Signals, including exclusive content, become a member and support the channel further too.YouTube -https://www.youtube.com/@GreenSignals/joinPatreon -https://www.patreon.com/GreenSignalsGreen Signals: Website -http://www.greensignals.orgMerchandise - http://greensignals.etsy.comNewsletter -http://www.greensignals.org/#mailing-listFollow: X (Twitter) -https://twitter.com/greensignallers LinkedIn -https://www.linkedin.com/company/green-signals-productions-ltdInstagram -https://instagram.com/greensignallersImportant Notes:The views and opinions expressed by any guests or interviewees on this channel / podcast are strictly their own and should not be assumed to reflect those of the hosts, the management or the Directors of Green Signals.
