In this episode, our host Gaby Azorsky speaks with Jessica Angima. Jessica is a first generation, Kenyan-American meditation instructor and social practice artist and organizer. Jessica is a writer and shares her Substack, Slowly, Slowly. She currently teaches Heart-Mind Meditation at Heal Haus, works at Arena, and is often found at the 462 Halsey Community Garden in Bed-Stuy. I met Jessica at MNDFL in New York City where I was part of their work-study program and she was studying and teaching. We spent many weeks together at the front desk silently enjoying each others company, and I really loved being part of a sangha (Dharma community) with her. Jessica and I talk about her path to dharma, Lovingkindness, wisdom for starting your practice, home, ecology, interdependence, community, and what she calls “McMindfullness”. Our slow, meditative, conversation opens the doors for you to start a meditation practice with the permission that it can look many different ways, but promises a happier life. Here is the quote that I read during the episode ~ Being naturalized to place means to live as if this is the land that feeds you, as if these are the streams from which you drink, that build your body and fill your spirit. To become naturalized is to know that your ancestors lie in this ground. Here you will give your gifts and meet your responsibilities. To become naturalized is to live as if your children's future matters, to take care of the land as if our lives and the lives of all our relatives depend on it. Because they do. -Braiding Sweetgrass, Robin Wall Kimmerer Thank you Jessica for your openness and gentle perspective on dharma! Imagine, after years of living on your own, building a 15-year career an award-winning career as a Creative Consultant and Wardrobe Stylist, and essentially checking all the success boxes, a chronic illness drops into your body, leading you back to your hometown to move in with your parents as you work to rehabilitate and heal, and try to not just reclaim, but reimagine your life.Today's guest, Tiffani Moore, knows exactly what it's like to be in this scenario—forced to listen to her body's need for recovery and support after she found out she had Lupus. Tiffani is the Founder and Owner of Moore WellBeings, in addition to being an Intuitive Healer & Coach, Reiki Master, yoga instructor, BreathWork, and MNDFL certified Meditation Facilitator. Before making her mark in the world of wellness, she spent 15+ years building a career as a successful, sought-after stylist and Creative Consultant. But her lupus diagnosis, and the physical and psychological devastation that led up to it, changed everything. Seeking less conventional solutions, she followed her intuition and began to study the power of alternative therapies, including meditation, yoga, herbal medicine, and many of the healing practices she utilizes with clients now. Recovering her wellbeing has been a years-long, painstaking process, fueled by intensive learning, and eventually, a drive to train in and share the many modalities she'd discovered, while also creating a safe, nonjudgmental and well-informed space for marginalized communities to explore holistic wellness. In this conversation with Tiffani today, you'll hear us explore the harsh realities of living with a chronic illness, like feeling like a burden to loved ones or the struggle to balance rest and recovery with the need to work to survive. We talk about intuition and its role in healing, wellness, and self-expression and how it could benefit us to rethink wellness not as a luxury but instead as a birthright or something we all deserve and can access. You can find Tiffani at: Website | InstagramIf you LOVED this episode you'll also love the conversations we had with James Gordon about the power of the mind to heal and work through illness and trauma.Check out our offerings & partners: My New Book SparkedMy New Podcast SPARKEDVisit Our Sponsor Page For a Complete List of Vanity URLs & Discount Codes.ClickUp: 15% off ClickUp's massive Unlimited Plan for a year. Using the concepts of breath, warmth, and light I help you focus on a place in your body (emotional or physical) that you'd like to direct attention toward. Almost all of my directions and meditation training can be attributed to three groups of folks: MNDFL (specificity Rev. angel Kyodo williams) folks from Spirit Rock; folks from friends of the western Buddhist order (though that practice was decades ago). I feel grateful for all the teachers I've been able to sit with. I'm glad you are here and I hope you benefit from this instruction. Based in Latrobe, PA, we created MNDFL Meals to offer fresh, tasty, and healthy meal options to the citizens of the greater Pittsburgh area. Having used many online meal prep services in the past, we disliked the amount of waste that came with each purchase - large boxes, plastic containers, dry ice/ice packs - and all for frozen meals that you really can't be sure when were cooked. All of our meals are cooked fresh weekly, and then delivered straight to your door. This ensures all your food tastes like it was made in your own kitchen, cuts down on the waste of packaging, and saves you money on shipping. Not to mention, our containers are made from 100% compostable plant fiber and turn to soil within 90 days - how cool is that?! (and don't worry... they microwave fine and don't get soggy

In this episode, we're chatting with Eric Mellgren all about sound healing, community elevation and his approach to making meditation normal for the everyday person. Eric Mellgren, Founder of The Middle Branch, started his company to teach people how to have a healthier relationship to stress, different ways to relieve stress/anxiety, and giving their minds and bodies an optimal foundation for healing. As a Sound Guided Meditation practitioner, energy worker, and health coach, Eric uses techniques to bring one into a state of relaxation which allows deep healing to occur. Spending most of his life working in music, whether being an artist or behind the scenes, it molded his style of sound bath journeys he creates by using crystal quartz bowls and various other instruments. Eric's background in nutrition and energy work has also been a major influence on the approach taken when speaking about the biology and science behind why meditation is so powerful and the use of sound enhancing that quality. Being mindful with yourself, or MNDFL, is a motto and formula that TMB uses. Meditation+Natural Healing+Diet+Fitness= a Lifestyle. Using this as a template to be able to get through the tough times, push through the stuck ones, and go beyond anything you imagined for yourself. Episode Highlights Lodro's Early Struggles With Anxiety and the Importance of His Book Lodro struggled with anxiety for most of his life. He started meditating at an early age. He learned to focus on the present problems instead of anticipating future problems. The pandemic brought stress and anxiety for everyone. It is important to learn how to healthily cope despite the uncertainties. Lodro’s book, Take Back Your Mind, is a helpful book for today’s time. It provides support in facing anxiety. Facing Anxiety and Dysfunction amid a Global Pandemic Some of Lodro’s meditation students do not know how to navigate life without meditation practices. Mindfulness can help you recognize anxiety triggers. It helps with stabilizing thoughts and emphasizes focus on proper breathing. Take Back Your Mind offers other tips and techniques that are short and easy to do. We waste our mental energy, which we could have used to connect with our loved ones or do other activities, when we entertain anxious thoughts. With the ongoing pandemic, facing anxiety entails learning tools to unhook ourselves from the stories we welcome and enjoy life for what it is. Recognizing Anxiety and Techniques On How to Disengage From It News and social media can deplete our mental and emotional battery. Worse, this often goes unnoticed. With depleted mental and emotional batteries, coping with the pandemic and facing anxiety become harder. Whenever you’re doing something, ask yourself two questions: “Is this helpful?” and “Is this useful?” Our minds have the capacity to unhook itself from stress-producing stories we create. Being gentle is the key. Lodro uses the term “thought party” to describe how we try and create as many thoughts as possible about a situation. Constantly thinking of “what ifs” is not helpful. It removes us from the present. We must not only step away from intrusive thoughts but also learn how to appreciate the present. Accepting Ourselves hrough Meditation Lodro also feels anxious about not being liked by the people he admires. Often, we believe that we must find love from others. In Tibetan, the word Gom can mean meditation or familiarization with oneself. Meditation enables you to know yourself better. Meditation leads to satisfaction with the love we have for ourselves. We have enough love within, and it is the most important relationship to have. Growing up in a Buddhist household taught Lodro that he wasn't born as a mess that needed fixing. Mindful Use of Devices and Social Media Social media bombards us with different sensory images. Listen to the full episode to know in-depth Lodro's threefold logic in using gadgets and social media — the sense of intentionality, being present as much as possible, and the fruition of how we feel after. Discernment is recognizing the things we want to cultivate or cut. Discipline is prioritizing our morals and doing the things that uplift us Life is a learning process. As humans, we continue to change and create better habits as we go. Growing Up in a Buddhist Household Lodro talks about the generational anxiety and trauma he observed from inside and outside of his world in Buddhism. He's becoming more aware of the world and societal issues outside of Buddhism, such as toxic masculinity, patriarchy, and more. Lodro feels radically loved knowing that his book can help people and feel the love he infused into it. 5 Powerful Quotes [1:54] “But for me, it's really been, what do I do when things fall apart? What do I do when it hits the fan, and there's a major stressor, there's a major move, or major financial thing and major... whatever it is for any of us.” [14:25] “If you met a new friend, and you started hanging out regularly, and getting to know them, at some point you'd be like: I like this person, I like this one. And maybe months, years past, you look over your shoulder: I love this friend because we spend so much time getting to know them and embracing them for who they are. Meditation is us doing that with ourselves.” [16:58] “And people asked like, ‘Oh, was it like growing up in a Buddhist household?’ The key thing that really stood out to me is that I wasn't raised with the idea that I was originally messed up and I needed to fix it. I was raised with the idea that I'm basically a whole good as is.” [23:06] “We make mistakes as human beings. And then we continue to refine and say, ‘Well, I don't want to do that mistake again, I want to be more intentional.’” [26:08] “There's a learning process along the way; and that's sort of the beautiful thing. As humans, we can continue to evolve, we can continue to change from who we were, and force better habits than we have in the past.” About Lodro Lodro Rinzler is a best-selling author, long-time Buddhist meditation teacher, and co-founder of MNDFL meditation studios in New York City. In this episode, I'm overjoyed to say I am talking to Lodro Rinzler, a meditation teacher who has taught Buddhism for 20 years, starting when he was just 18 years old. Lodro is the author of six meditation books including the bestseller The Buddha Walks into a Bar; and is the co-founder of the MNDFL meditation studios in New York City. Lodro's work has also been featured in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Atlantic, Good Morning America, CBS, and NBC. Not only that, but it's difficult for me to overstate how much of an impact Lodro has had on my career and understanding of how to apply the principles of mindfulness, meditation & Buddhism to my life. He has - I hope he won't mind me saying - become somewhat of a mentor to me, and has been my teacher on 3 separate training courses over the past few years, including on the principles of Buddhism and Buddhist theory - which was totally fascinating and very important to me as someone who originally came at meditation and mindfulness from a very secular, scientific point of view. He has also been my teacher on 2 meditation teacher training meditation courses I have completed, including shamatha mindfulness meditation, and metta, loving-kindness meditation. He is also extremely wise, and has managed to maintain a real sense of humour and approachability, despite being extremely learned in the principles of Buddhism and Buddhist theory. I am totally honoured to have him on the episode today - and it also includes the most Buddhist definition of “being a badass” that I have ever heard, so you do not want to miss it! ------------ As usual, all the shownotes and resources for this episode - plus how to contact Charlotte, are on my website at BreatheLikeABadass.com/Podcast ------------ This episode was brought to you by my FREE quiz - What's Your Inner Critic Identity (And How Is She Sabotaging Your Success)? In this session, we will dive into: The phases that we are going through collectively during a pandemic; shock, resilience, and reintegration (destruction and re-birth) How the Vedic law of karma (cause and effect) is playing itself out through the challenges of a global pandemic. How everything (even negative circumstances) is simply evolution. How this time is asking us to ask the question (both individually and collectively” to assess, “What is sustainable with what we are doing right now?” How we are in a crisis of systems, and how the current government is reflecting that and serving as a destruction operator. How darkness is always present to illuminate the light through adversity and expand consciousness. The importance of taking action born of stillness instead of fear. How this time is unveiling our communal Gross suggestibility that happiness lives on the other side of constant doing. How this time is actually grounding our internal peace. How meditation, stillness, and spiritual practice can generate more powerful, dynamic, and distilled action. Davidson Hang Reflections and Lessons from a life worth living
Inspired by Katie Page Weiss's post on Linkedin. I've decided to share why I am so passionate about Mental Health Awareness Month. Imposter syndrome, the other day I shared a bit about Imposter Syndrome doing a meeting with another team here at Linkedin. I'll never forget the day I was crying in front of my manager, and I didn't know why I was doing that. I've moved around a lot in my life and have a ton of my support in my life luckily. A ton of friends, I went to college, there were many things to be grateful for. Still, I felt a sense of aloneness, it almost didn't make any sense because I worked at a company where my people would dream of working, we had fun happy hours, it was a strong name brand, and my coworkers were brilliant. I was fortunate enough that I had excellent health insurance, and it allowed me to pay for a therapist. I wasn't sure what compelled me to look into mental health; all I knew is that I had a lot of emotions to process. Growing up, my father left us one day without telling us, and I always felt different than everyone else. We all experience some trauma in life that's just growing up. I was so grateful that my therapist almost took the place of my father where I was able to heal some of my past. I remember moving back to the town where I spent most of my life growing up in Cherry Hill, NJ. I reached out to all of my previous teachers and acknowledged them for being there for me and for helping me expand on my curiosity. There was still something missing... Fast forward, I end up moving into NYC, and my girlfriend and I got a place together in a tiny Manhattan apartment. I went to so many networking events because I enjoyed meeting people and learning about other people's stories and lives. I met Joslyn from Accomplishment Coaching, and that year-long intensive program blew open my world. I learned about my survival mechanisms, which in the program mine were Big Hero No, Optimistic Orphan, and Judgmental Guru. These were the names of who I grow up to be because of my trauma and stuff that I've interpreted in my life as my father not loving me enough to stick around for. During this really intense program you get to deal with all of your dark secrets and realize that wow I am not the only one going through all of this craziness that's in my head. I started to see that actually, my parents and everyone else around me love me for what I am and not for my accomplishments and awards. I started meeting other people who were into this kind of work of self-discovery and forgiveness and stumbled upon a program called Landmark, and that blasted away another layer of the complexity that is a human being. I started making amends with all of the people whom I perceived as having unresolved issues with. I called my old bosses, where I left for another company or an ex-girlfriend whom I've left in the past. I took responsibility for my actions, and it felt great. It wasn't easy or fun, but I felt a huge burden lifted off my shoulders. We all still have our ups and downs, and I am grateful for all of those who stood for me and helped me process so many of these feelings of imposter syndrome, doubt, anxiety, and constant comparison. Thank you, Katie Page Weiss. We don't know each other, but I am so glad you shared your story because when leaders do it, other employees are compelled to open themselves up as well. The five things I would recommend in helping us during our Mental Health journey is Meditation or find your grounding practice. For me, it looks like taking a walk around the park or being in nature. Try different types of meditation. Headspace was the one that got me into all of this. I remember saying to myself meditation is hard, but like with anything else with practice, it becomes easier. I would also recommend Transcendental Meditation or for anyone who is located in NYC- the Inscape studio in flatiron or MNDFL is excellent as well for anyone in the 50s midtown east area. Find a physical exercise you enjoy and make it a part of your routine. Crossfit, Flywheel, Yoga, and weight lifting has been fun in having more self confidence on my physical well being as well as mentally. It helps build a sharp, healthy habit and mind. Find your tribe or group of friends where you can be yourself. For me, it's the social impact community, Sales folks, the coaching, and personal development communities. I love being with people who are curious about themselves and others and want to become the best version of themselves by having a growth mindset. Find a therapist and try different types of therapy. Everyone has a different style, and different techniques work well for different people. Try Somatic Therapy and EMDR . Ping me if you want to discuss or want a recommendation on how to go about finding the right therapist for you. Reiki, Acupuncture, and having a Chiropractor in a way is helpful for healing for me. Hire an Executive/Life Coach- It's helpful to have an unbiased accountability partner who you speak with regularly. They can help you by being an objective point of view of whats going on and will hold you accountable to be responsible for your actions, goals, and your results. You might not always love what you hear but you will be grateful at the end of the tunnel when you've generated breakthroughs in areas of your life where you never thought you could. I had a story about how I was not a great writer and times like these give me the opportunity to impact at a much larger scale because writing reaches the masses much more easily than one on one conversations. I hope this inspires others to share their own Mental Health journey.

Early adulthood is filled with intense emotions and insecurity. What if you never fall in love? What if you can't find work you’re passionate about? You miss home. You miss close friends. You’re lost in the noise of how you think you should be living and worried about wasting what everyone says should be the best years of your life. In her book "What Now? Meditation for Your Twenties and Beyond (Parallax Press, 2017), Yael Shy shares mindfulness practices to help twentysomethings learn to identify and accept these feelings and respond—not react—to painful and powerful stimuli without pushing them away or getting lost in them. This is not about fixing oneself or being "better." Readers are encouraged to embrace themselves exactly as they are. You are already completely whole, completely loveable, completely worthy. What Now? shares practices that help us to wake up to this fact. This uniquely tumultuous developmental period is a time when many first live away from home and engage in all kinds of experimentation—with ideas, substances, relationships, and who we think we are and want to be in the world. Yael Shy shares her own story and offers basic meditation guides to beginning a practice. She explores the Buddhist framework for what causes suffering and explores ideas about interconnection and social justice as natural outgrowths of meditation practice. Yael is the Senior Director of the NYU Global Spiritual Life Center and the NYU 'Of Many' Institute for Multifaith and Spiritual Leadership, as well as the Founder and Director of MindfulNYU, the largest campus-wide mindfulness initiative in the country. Adreanna Limbach, lead instructor of MNDFL meditation studios in NYC, and author of "Tea and Cake With Demons", sits down to share meaningful conversation and insight about her meditation community, and her own journey.**Are you in an awesome community? Leave us a review and share it for others to get involved!**Interview questions:First off, Tell everyone about the mindful community and your own meditation/coaching community you've built, as well as your book! How did you get into this work? Why are you doing this? What motivates you? You were living in NYC, wanted to do costume design at parsons. Did you just wake up one day and say I want to learn about Buddhism and help people instead? Tell us about your pathMisperceptions about meditation. I hear a lot from people that I can't meditate because i can't clear my mind. I tried it once, but i couldn't stop thinking, so I'm just not good at meditation. What are your thoughts or advice, especially given the busy lives millennials live.Technology. Headspace, calm. You've talked about this question of what's next? People use apps but don't know where to go or progress. People need context in applying these methods to their daily lives. Does technology have a role to play? Would you recommend skip the apps and go straight to your class?Millennial culture and meditation. I talk to millennials a lot about different struggles they're having and a consistent theme I come across is feeling content. Millennials struggle with feeling content, or enough. Imposter syndrome is a common term that's expressed. In your book called Tea and Cake With Demons (which I highly recommend by the way) you discuss a lot about insufficiency and self worth. What can you share with us to tackle this problem?Another topic I want to ask you about is communication. In my opinion, we have a communication problem in our generation and society. We generally suck at it. We don't know how to give and receive information that is ideologically different than our own without getting angry or upset. We struggle with conflict management, especially in the world of politics. How can we solve this problem? You talk a lot about ego. You ask a powerful question, who would you be without your reputation? Or if you lost everything? Goes back to this concept of self worth and not being held hostage by other people's perceptions. I feel like in this social media Instagram world we live in, we're constantly comparing ourselves. Especially in a city like New York where you have this potent mix of finance, money, power. How do we break this behavioral pattern and validate our lives or just love ourselves? What are some challenges or struggles you've had in your spiritual journey? Are the experts allowed to have problems? What insecurities do you have? Do you ever feel pressure that you have to always embody the ideals you preach? For example, I have a lot of coaches who are friends, and they feel “how can I coach people and give advice on the same issues I'm dealing with”?What is something you wish someone had told you 5 years ago, or you had told yourself, that you had to learn on your own? But would have made life so much easier had you known. How can people learn more about you and get involved with the community you're building?www.adreannalimbach.com@adreannalimbachSign up for her new course by February 24th!Join our community at www.wisemillennial.com & @wisemillennial on insta, and get connected with other amazing humans!

If there’s one thing that PR queen Savannah Engel has mastered, it’s the art of conversation. “Throw me into a room with 300 people I don’t know,” Engel says, “give me two hours, and I will know every single person there, and be their best friend.” You might argue that the key to such confidence lies in Savannah’s undeniable Southern charm. Her roots in the Mississippi Delta, combined with her mother’s fashionable influence made for a keen eye and impeccable communication skills. That being said, fashion PR wasn’t always the plan. In fact, while studying at Southern Methodist University (SMU), Engel had a deep passion for refugee studies and legal work. It wasn’t until she landed an internship in New York with Michael Kors that everything changed. From there, Engel went on to work for Barney’s and First Access Entertainment. Then, in 2017, she finally founded her own firm, Savannah Engel PR. In a matter of only two years, Engel has taken on clients such as Markarian, Pyer Moss, Cherry LA, Missoni, and many more. All in all, she’s a boss, and she’s a force to be reckoned with. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) encourages parents to share meditation with their children and teachers to incorporate mindfulness training into their lesson plans. The simple act of teaching children how to stop, focus, and just breathe could be one of the greatest gifts you give them. My guest, Jackie Stewart, is fascinated with the human mind and understanding how our perceptions impact our present experience. Inevitably, through studying the mind, she began to understand the interrelated nature of our shared humanity and need for connection. With an MA in Media, Culture, and Communication from NYU, a background in the fashion and entertainment industries, as well as being a certified meditation instructor, she works at bringing mindfulness to everyday life in a practical and approachable way. She can be found teaching meditation at MNDFL, NYC’s premier meditation studio; Journey LIVE, the first live stream meditation app; Alo Moves, Alo’s online training platform from the world’s top instructors; and as a contributing writer for Rose & Rex on intentional and mindful parenting. Start your day off with a sense of peace and mindfulness with Ellie Burrows Gluck as she guides us through a calming meditation exercise in this special episode. Before co-starting MNDFL, Ellie Burrows Gluck served as an executive in the film business for a number of years until she came across her true passion: spirituality and pursuit of consciousness. She then quit her job in 2013 to travel around the world as a spiritual tourist, returning to New York City at the end of the trip to pursue her Certificate in Coaching. And then came along MNDFL, a drop-in meditation company where New Yorkers can better connect to their mind, heart, and the body without the weekend-long commitment. Listen in as she sheds light on her non-linear career changes she made while facing unexpected life circumstances.
Ellie Burrows had a health scare in 2008 that landed her in the office of functional and integrative medicine expert Dr. Frank Lipman. He introduced her to meditation to manage emotional aspects of her health issue and having that de-stressing practice became her anchor. She realized meditation was like going to the gym— if you go consistently, you'll see the benefits. That's when she came to the idea for MNDFL, New York City's first drop-in meditation studio. Ellie Burrows, CEO and co-founder of MNDFL, a NYC based meditation studio, stands out as a walking reminder to meditate. But, while she opened MNDFL in the West Village, and has already expanded to the Upper East Side and Williamsburg, Ellie’s journey towards starting MNDFL wasn’t all that straightforward. For 7 years, she worked in the film industry and didn’t quite feel the same passion her colleagues did. In 2013, she quit her job and travelled the world as a spiritual tourist. But when she returned to New York, she struggled with her meditation practice as she found it difficult to meditate in her own home. She liked group meditation but there wasn’t a non-religious place that didn’t require days-long commitment. MNDFL was thus born out of her personal needs and as it turns out, many others wanted the same things. Lodro Rinzler is a Buddhist practitioner and teacher. He began meditating as a child and sat retreats as a teenager, even going as far as attending a silent month-long retreat during which he shaved his head and took monastic robes and vows. Lodro went on to become a Vajrayana student of Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche. He also established Buddhist House, an eighteen person dorm at Wesleyan University which hosts a large meditation room. He began teaching meditation at that time. After leaving college he was recruited to the position of the Executive Director of the Boston Shambhala Center. He began leading numerous workshops at meditation centers and college campuses throughout the United States and to date has taught meditation at locations as diverse as Google, Harvard, and the White House. When we think about time and productivity, we usually think about doing. But meditation company MNDFL is trying to shift the focus to being. We talk with the company's CEO and co-founder Ellie Burrows about why she made this her business -- and how taking the time to unplug can make our lives more meaningful.
On this episode our host Lodro Rinzler is joined by Dan Harris for an interview which includes Dan making Lodro call him Daddy, a game of "News or Fake News" and stories about Dan's son wiping tushies. Dan is a correspondent for ABC News, an anchor for Nightline and co-anchor for the weekend edition of Good Morning America. He's also the author of the excellent books 10% Happier and the brand new Meditation for Fidgety Skeptics. You can connect with Dan through the 10% Happier app and pocast as well as at http://www.10percenthappier.com/.
Tony Zotti talks with us about how he introduced people to a hardcore meditation framework (The Mind Illuminated), the paradigm that a lot of us are trapped in, and the progression of insight.
Todays guest is peaceful AF but not preachy AF, which is unique and awesome for a meditation expert, enthusiast and entrepreneur. Ellie Burrows is the founder of MNDFL -- a collection of meditation studios sprawled throughout NYC. Ellie grew up in La La Land and was raised in a family in the entertainment business. She decided to go into film because she thought a lot of happiness waited for her there, but she never felt fulfilled and happy in Hollywood the same way her fam did. So she literally went soul searching or as she calls it, she became a spiritual tourist, and discovered the magic and simplicity of meditation. Rather than sparknotes her entire story, I think I should stop talking now and her Ellie do that because otherwise what would be the point of listening to the episode if I tell you everything in this bio, right? So press play to hear Ellie tell her story and remind us that meditation doesn’t necessarily mean plopping your butt on a fancy cushion. You’ll hear: How Ellie went from a career in the film industry to now running a meditation business! What she awesomely means by “following the crumbs.” And why you prob want to follow your crumbs, too! How Ellie defines meditation and the diff between mindfulness vs. meditation. The 3 C’s to starting a meditation practice. The type of meditation that I do daily :-) How to make your meditation PORTABLE. (No butts on pillows required.) And lots more! Do you meditate? Or do you think meditation is the privilege and skill of bearded yogis nestled deep in the Himalayas? Do you say you're 'too busy' to meditate, or that it's 'too hard'? It’s true. Meditation can be hard, without the proper training and support. And if you happen to live in a city, you're in an especially tough position: The stress of urban life basically makes meditation crucial for survival (and happiness) but at the same time, the tempo of city living often makes it impossible to find the time or place to give your practice the dedication it deserves. This is exactly where our guest Ellie Burrows comes in. She is not only an avid meditator, but also lives in New York City. Through her business MNDFL, she's made it not only possible- but easy- for frenzied city dwellers to find the solace of meditation amongst the honking horns and ground-shaking trash trucks. Part of a new, conscious-minded school of entrepreneurs, Ellie has created an urban spiritual oasis, and as a result, has helped inspire a quickly growing network and community of spiritually oriented businesses in The Big Apple. In this fun, and enlightening conversation Ellie shares her personal story of spiritual discovery, the challenges of creating MNDFL, and her vision of making meditation a regular part of life for the average person who has no intention of renouncing civilization in favor of a luxury deprived, monastic existence. For the sake of humanity (and the sanity of our nations cities) please share this episode with a meditator or mindful entrepreneur you know. Accessible, urgent, and life-changing.’ - Seth Godin Lodro Rinzler is a practitioner and teacher in the Shambhala Buddhist lineage, the founder of the MNDFL meditation studio (which New York Magazine just named the best place to learn meditation in NYC) and the author of numerous books including; Love Hurts: Buddhist Advice for the Heartbroken, the bestselling book, The Buddha Walks into a Bar..., and the book that is the focus of our conversation, The Buddha Walks into an Office. This episode was sheer delight and will be of significant interest for those seeking to engage a day at the office as place to cultivate fullness of being. Lodro Rinzler, author of 5 books and founder of MNDFL, a pioneering meditation studio in New York City, talks everything meditation: What, why, and how.
When one steps into MNDFL, it's easy to think you've made a wrong turn. Meditation studios are supposed to be a little dusty, a little impersonal. They certainly do not look like that Hamptons beach house you saw in that design magazine. But MNDFL's founders, Ellie Burrows (chief executive officer) and Lodro Rinzler (chief spiritual officer), had a different idea when they conceived of their new venture: create a drop-in meditation space where one can feel at home (literally), and where the "tradition" is simply soft music, plush couches, and hot tea. The studio on 8th Street in Greenwich Village has attracted lots of attention from the likes of The New York Times, Vogue, and beyond. In Episode 86, hear Ellie describe her own personal journey as well as the unique ideas that brought this pioneering space to life. Visit us at www.MeditateThisPodcast.com. Lodro Rinzler is that increasingly rare Westerner who didn't find Buddhism through a later-in-life quest for answers, he was brought up in the tradition of Shambhala Buddhism and has lived its teachings since he was a child, at one point even exploring the monastic path. That said, he's very much "of this world," deeply connected to the realities, demands, challenges and joys of life in a world that seems to be moving faster and faster and placing less and less emphasis on relationships, compassion and the deepest parts of love. His desire to share his lens on Buddhist wisdom applied to modern life led Lodro to eventually take his seat as a teacher, penning a number of wonderful books, the latest, How to Love Yourself (and Sometimes Other People): Spiritual Advice for Modern Relationships. He's also a co-founder of a very cool new center for meditation in New York City called MNDFL.In today's conversation, we explore Lodro's remarkable personal journey and what it was like being the Buddhist on the block as a kid.We also dive into some of the major ideas, practices and teachings from Buddhism, like meditation (what it is and isn't), Karma (how to really think about it), compassion and love, and discuss a bit of mythology and misunderstanding around each.
