Co-founders of London and New York Meditation Centers have taught thousands of people to transform their lives. Their work has taken them to seven continents (including Antarctica) — teaching private clients in group settings and with fashion, tech, and finance companies. Jillian's first book, Why Meditate? Because It Works. has been featured in The Guardian, The Times, and Vogue. Michael hosts the Speaking of Meditation podcast with guests, including functional medicine pioneer Dr Frank Lipman and Zoe app founder Tim Spector. Jillian and Michael come from corporate careers—Jillian is the CEO of a global publishing company based in Paris, and Michael is an executive in the entertainment industry in LA. They recognized immediate improvements when they learned Vedic Meditation and were inspired to share this knowledge. They met in India in 2005 and have been working and teaching together. Instagram: @newyorkmeditationcenter @londonmeditationcentre @jillianlavender @miller_ji Websites: https://newyorkmeditationcenter.com, https://www.londonmeditationcentre.com Book: Why Meditate? Because It Works Summary     Exploring Meditation and Its Benefits Michael and Michael Miller had a conversation about meditation and its benefits. Michael Miller mentioned her partner's book, "Why Meditate? Because it works," and her podcast, "Speaking of Meditation," which she believes could be helpful for people looking to understand the potential impact of meditation. Michael agreed, noting that people often look for a quick fix, but sometimes it's easier than they think. They decided to record the conversation for future reference. Michael Miller also mentioned her work as a co-founder of the London and New York Meditation Center.     Exploring Vedic Meditation and Mindfulness Michael Miller discussed the technique of Vedic Meditation, which has been practiced for thousands of years and involves quieting the mind and resting the body. Miller mentioned that this technique is taught to people from all walks of life, including high performers who understand the power of their mind and focus. Michael agreed on the importance of meditation, especially in managing stress and burnout, and expressed interest in the technique. He also shared his observation that people often take things personally. Michael Miller responded by discussing the importance of maintaining a clear signal amidst the noise in the mind and being present to detect what's happening.     Exploring Meditation's Benefits and Mental Focus Michael Miller and Michael discussed the benefits of meditation, particularly its ability to enhance perceptual capability, reduce reactivity, and provide a sense of grace. Michael Miller emphasized that meditation allows individuals to be more present and available to others and to respond to situations more thoughtfully. Michael shared his experience with noise cancellation on his ear pods, likening it to a moment of silence amidst the world's noise. He also referenced a scene from a movie where a baseball pitcher, Kevin Costner, quiets himself down to focus solely on the game, illustrating the importance of mental focus.     Self-love, Meditation, and Inner Stability Michael and Michael Miller discussed the importance of self-love and self-acceptance in achieving inner stability and calmness. Michael Miller used the metaphor of a wave on the ocean to illustrate how meditation can help individuals connect with their true selves beyond external achievements and material possessions. He emphasized the value of tapping into inner quiet and stability to navigate the outside world more effectively. Michael agreed, noting that this ability is crucial for elite athletes to continue thriving and winning.     Michael Miller's Book Meditation Guide and Writing Process Michael and Michael Miller discussed Michael Miller's book, "Why Meditate? Because it Works". Michael Miller explained that the book came to fruition before the Covid lockdowns and was written to provide a comprehensive guide to meditation, as the technique requires a personal, in-person experience. The book aims to dispel misconceptions about meditation, such as its complexity or challenge. Michael Miller shared her disciplined writing process, which involved meditating at 5 am and writing for 6 hours daily. The book has resonated with people, mainly those interested in meditation but who have yet to attend in-person sessions.     Meditation vs Running: Mental and Physical Benefits Michael Miller discussed the differences between meditation and running as mental and physical exercise forms. Miller explained that running can lead to a quieter mind due to the body's fight or flight response, and meditation induces a settled mental state with optimal brain functioning for creative insight. Michael Miller emphasized that meditation can lead to deep rest, improved brain functioning, and greater creativity. It can also help manage energy levels and reduce reliance on caffeine. Miller also mentioned that meditation can enhance the quality of sleep. Michael agreed with Miller's points, noting that once one experiences the benefits of meditation, one tends to seek it out again.     Discussing Meditation's Impact and Benefits Michael and Michael Miller discussed the benefits of meditation and its impact on individuals. Michael Miller shared her podcast, "Speaking of Meditation," which features interviews with various individuals who have experienced the transformative power of meditation. Michael expressed his appreciation for the stories shared on the podcast, particularly those involving individuals who have found change through meditation, such as those in prison. He emphasized the potential of meditation to provide different perspectives and promote personal growth.     Overcoming Burnout and the Power of Meditation Michael shared his experience overcoming burnout in 2009, emphasizing the importance of curiosity and avoiding self-judgment. He highlighted the benefits of meditation for improving relationships, productivity, and well-being. Michael Miller agreed on the benefits of meditation and stressed the importance of self-care and personal balance for positively impacting society. Miller argued that being happy and generous can contribute to a more peaceful world and urged individuals to take responsibility for their well-being.     Exploring Meditation Benefits and Resources Michael Miller and Michael discussed the benefits of meditation and its potential to improve people's lives. Michael Miller offered resources for learning meditation, including the London and New York Meditation Centers' websites

Dr. Frank Lipman joins us from New York. _________________________ Resolutions not working? Don't give up on your goals. Get on track with a smarter way: Tiny Habits. _________________________ Bio For Dr. Frank Lipman, health is more than just the absence of disease: it is a total state of physical, mental, emotional, spiritual and social wellbeing. Dr. Lipman is a widely recognized trailblazer and leader in functional and integrative medicine, and he is a New York Times best-selling author of five books, How to Be Well, The New Health Rules, Young and Slim for Life, Revive and Total Renewal. After his initial medical training in his native South Africa, Lipman spent 18 months working at clinics in the bush. He became familiar with the local traditional healers, called sangomas, which kindled his interest in non-Western healing modalities In 1984, Lipman immigrated to the United States, where he became the chief medical resident at Lincoln Hospital in Bronx, NY. While there, he became fascinated by the hospital's addiction clinic, which used acupuncture and Chinese medicine making him even more aware of the potential of implementing non-Western medicine to promote holistic wellbeing. He began studying nutrition, acupuncture, Chinese medicine, herbal medicine, functional medicine, biofeedback, meditation, and yoga. Lipman founded the Eleven Eleven Wellness Center in 1992, where he combines the best of Western medicine and cutting edge nutritional science with age-old healing techniques from the East. As his patient, chef Seamus Mullen, told The New York Times, “If antibiotics are right, he'll try it. If it's an anti-inflammatory diet, he'll do that. He's looking at the body as a system rather than looking at isolated things.” ______________________________ For More on Dr. Frank Lipman Website Better Sleep, Better You: Your No-Stress Guide for Getting the Sleep You Need and the Life You Want The New Rules of Aging Well: A Simple Program for Immune Resilience, Strength, and Vitality _______________________________ Mentioned in this Episode Oura Ring _______________________________ Podcast Episodes You May Like Breaking the Age Code – Dr. Becca Levy Take Charge of Your Well-Being – John La Puma, MD The Mind-Body Connection and The Rabbit Effect – Kelli Harding Tiny Habits Can Lead to Big Changes – BJ Fogg ________________________________ Wise Quotes On What Affects Sleep "It's also important to understand with sleep, it's not only about what you do at night before you go to sleep, it's also about what happens during the day that's going to affect your sleep. And it's important to realize it's one of the important pillars of health.  We talk about diet, exercise, and stress, but sleep is up there. And the last thing I'd like to say, especially with your audience and with our age group, alcohol is not your friend. It's not your friend with anything, but particularly when it comes to sleep. A lot of people drink alcohol because it sort of calms them down and they think it makes them fall asleep, but it really disrupts your sleep." On Melatonin "We've always thought of melatonin as something for sleep. But lately I've been exploring a lot of the research using or seeing melatonin as one of the primary anti-aging hormones. So as we get older, our melatonin levels decrease, and that may be why we find it harder to sleep, but melatonin doesn't just affect your sleep. Melatonin affects your immune system, your heart, it affects  metabolism, sugar control and your weight.

This week we begin discussions about the differences between chronological age vs. biological age, what drives the aging process, and what we can do to impact, not just our longevity, but the quality of our health span. Emerging science is revealing more and more about the body and how and why we age. We talk about some of the main drivers of aging, such as increased inflammation, hormonal changes, increased insulin production, increased blood glucose, changes in our microbiome, decreased mitochondrial function (the powerhouse of cells), and decline in sirtuin activity (protective pathways which help keep mitochondria healthy). We dive into contributing factors of abnormal aging and disease, including diet, eating too much, obesity, inactivity, stress, poor sleep quality, and lack of community and meaningful relationships. We share fascinating information about the Blue Zones, where a high percentage of the population live to 90/100+ years (healthy, happy, and thriving) with low rates of age-related diseases and disabilities. (For more in-depth information, please listen to The Doctor's Farmacy Podcast hosted by Dr. Mark Hyman, #71 with Dr. David Sinclair, and #622 where Dr. Hyman consolidates his interviews with Dr. David Sinclair, Dr. Frank Lipman, and Dan Buettner.) This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health, ButcherBox, and InsideTracker. In Western culture, we've gained a negative view of aging. But in other cultures around the world, aging is celebrated and embraced. That's because we define difficult symptoms like aches and pains, cognitive decline, and so many others as “aging” when they're actually signs of dis-ease that can be prevented and often even reversed. Fortunately, there is much we can do to change the trajectory of aging starting at a young age, or at any age. In today's episode, I talk with Dr. David Sinclair, Dr. Frank Lipman, and Dan Buettner about all the ways to age better, from supplements to support mitochondria, to increasing muscle, to cultivating community, and more.Dr. David Sinclair is a professor in the Department of Genetics and codirector of the Paul F. Is happiness just in your mind, or does your body play a role? Is health just in your body, or is your mind critical? What about your environment, circumstance, and history? How do these play into the well-being puzzle? Especially now, after a few years that have been so hard on us?According to Dr. Frank Lipman, in order for us to feel better, more alive, more well, we need to focus on 6 key areas, that all interconnect. Frank is a pioneer in both integrative and functional medicine. He's the founder and director of 1111 wellness center in New York City. A New York Times bestselling author and the creator of Be Well, a lifestyle brand that helps people achieve genuine and really sustainable life changes. I have known Frank for many years. He's become a close advisor when it comes to really anything wellness related that I am exploring doing. We explored his moving personal journey from South Africa to New York in a prior episode. In this week's best of episode, drawing from his latest book, How to Be Well, we dive into what he calls his good medicine mandala, and it's really kinda wrapped around these six pillars of health, along with some very specific and often contrary and advice, which, he is not afraid to carve his own path and be very direct about what he agrees and disagrees with on everything from fasting and fat in your diet to sleep and sunshine, and so much more, really excited to share this conversation with you. His insights are especially valuable as we all start to look at how to emerge from these last few years, and reclaim a sense of agency over our health, happiness, and overall well-being. Heartbreak. We all experience it. It's a horrible feeling, but can it actually, literally, break your heart, along with the other organs and systems in your body? Turns out, the answer is yes. It attacks not just your psychology - your state of mind - but also your physiology; everything from your brain to your cardiovascular, endocrine, immune system, and beyond. It can ravage both body and mind. And, it also turns out, there are things you can do to not only mend your broken heart emotionally but also rebuild your health after it's taken a major hit. That's where we're going with my guest today, acclaimed science journalist, Florence Williams. Her book The Nature Fix was an Audible bestseller. She is a contributing editor at Outside Magazine and has written for the New York Times, National Geographic, and many other publications. But, that's not what kicked off her interest in heartbreak and what it does to us. For Florence, it was personal. After her decades-long marriage ended, she found herself, not surprisingly, devastated. Not just emotionally, though, but also physically. Ill. Her body and her health started falling apart. And as she began to pick up the pieces, her science journalist's brain also started wondering how emotional heartbreak was connected to the rash of physical symptoms and illness that had seemed to take over her body. She wondered if there was science behind if and, also, what could be done about it. That curiosity set in motion a quest that led her deep into the rapidly-evolving science of heartbreak, and also to the tools and strategies that culminated in her book Heartbreak: A Personal and Scientific Journey. You can find Florence at: Website | Instagram | Heartbreak AudiobookIf you LOVED this episode you'll also love the conversations we had with Frank Lipman about how inseparable the mind and body are when it comes to health.Check out our offerings & partners: My New Book Sparked | My New Podcast SPARKEDVisit Our Sponsor Page For a Complete List of Vanity URLs & Discount Codes.Indeed: Connect with your talent audience so you can make more quality hires faster.
