Bianca asks if she can have a word – suppose you've heard about my dad turning up. You know how it is round here. Can't stop the tongues wagging. Raymond asks if the 3 peaks challenge in 24 hours is a good idea . It's hill walking, a bit extreme but still hill walking – I know I can walk, don't know if I could run the Great North Run. Duncan greets them in the usual manner. Neill says it good to get out for a drink and relax. It's been full on recently. D agrees says his Sarah is having a nap – she's all in. You 2 seem to have been at it non-stop. Alyson laughs – I hope they haven't Duncan otherwise we're in trouble! Sarah and Neil reflect on continuing but reduced drug dealing activity. Sarah recalls after last raid Neil caught ongoing activity in same area with the drone. Mario mentions he had popped into Mystic Molls the other day (and before he can continue…) Carmella says she doesn't want him getting involved in that sort of thing and Harry echoes the sentiment Bob asks Harry how he's settling in and H says fine and it's great not having to get up at silly o'clock in the morning. Bob sees Mr Music man approaching. Matt checks to see if the insurance assessor has visited and Bob say's he telephoned but because of other more pressing cases he's been delayed until next week.

Many leaders struggle with making tough decisions and dealing with their aftermath. In this episode Sarah Miller, CEO at leading global ethics consultancy Principia, shares how ethics can provide a set of resources and tools to use within decision-making, guiding how we lead as individuals from our own place of values, but probably more critically, how we engage with others who bring their own sets of values. In our conversation we discuss… How to weigh different perspectives and ‘effectively deliberate' The ‘transparency and fairness tests' you can apply to decisions Creating safe spaces for difficult discussions after hard decisions The concept of the ‘moral remainder' and how it will help you navigate hard decisions and their aftermath What we can learn from philosophy about leadership How having a ‘challenger role' could make your leadership team's decisions better My name's Carla Miller, leadership coach, author and trainer. And this is the Influence & Impact podcast for women leaders, helping you confidently navigate the ups and downs of leadership and feel less alone on your journey as a leader. The lads are leggy; no, not Eddie's men, but our weary podcasters who are fighting DOMs and post-race bugs after the Great North Run. But, we'll endeavour to bring you a balanced view of the last few days in Newcastle United, featuring the aftermath of a media briefing with new Sporting Director Paul Mitchell. It's fair to say it could have gone better. The Lasses had clear channels of communication as they put on a solid showing in their first league game of the new season. How will they fare in the second tier? Pretty well, if this draw at fancied London City Lionesses is a true picture. The club's next Premier League fixture comes at Wolverhampton, with Chris in attendance, and spirits should be high after a successful set of international fixtures for most of our participants. Jack Buckner is the former two Olympic Games athlete and 5000 metre European Champion who is now CEO of UK Athletics, the governing body for track and field in Britain. Buckner has held the same position at British Triathlon and more recently British Swimming. This followed a career in sports marketing at Adidas, in the UK, Germany and the US.The impetus for our conversation was a recent announcement that UKA was entering a three way partnership with London Marathon Events and the Great North Run, to create a new group, called Athletic Ventures. This new organisation is set against the backdrop of the governing body reporting a record annual loss of £3.7m in 2023. Most of that deficit was due to the staging of major events. UKA was awarded up to £150,000 by UK Sport to help stage the Diamond League meeting last year, after it approached the funding agency for help. Despite it being a sellout, UKA is reported to have lost between £100,000 and £500,000 from the flagship event. In this interview, Buckner talks candidly about the future of track and field, World Athletics recent decision to pay athletes at this summer's Olympic Games and his aspiration to create the Glastonbury of Track and Field. Just Finish is author Sean Kachmarski's story of going from watching The Great North Run on TV every year and telling his wife “I'm going to run that next year”, to actually running it! Sean played football while he was in school but never described himself as athletic. By the time he decided to start running he had 2 kids, a full time job and was overweight, so he wasn't even sure if he could do it. It all started with a health scare in 2004, and finally deciding to download a couch to 5k training app a decade later in 2014. Just Finish is about Sean's running journey, also a tribute to all the people he met and who have helped him along the way, and a lesson in choosing goals that motivate you. The book is divided into 48 chapters which Sean refers to as “miles” as he has found that writing this book was a lot like his running journey, full of hurdles but also people who believed in him.Sean is a Canadian living in the UK with his wife and two kids. He considers himself ordinary (just like everyone else) and this is what drives him to want to help other believe in themselves and their ability to set goals and achieve them. In addition to his book, Sean is also very active on social media including Instagram and YouTube. If you are interested in getting a copy of the book, you can get it at the following website: https://payhip.com/b/8Ik2You can also find it on AmazonCanada: https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B084BVCDD2/ref=cm_sw_r_tw_dp_GXT9W5CBTP97WCF7SKYZUSA: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B084BVCDD2/ref=cm_sw_r_tw_dp_9MM5X336ZQE68QT31N14 UK: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B084BVCDD2/ref=cm_sw_r_tw_dp_9MM5X336ZQE68QT31N14If you would like to follow Sean, he is on YouTube: https://youtube.com/@SeanSpeaksYou can also help him with his YouTube Channel by supporting him here: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/SeanSpeaks Support the showAny feedback or suggestions on this review or any of our other podcast episodes would be greatly welcomed. "I think she has the talent to be the best in the world in the marathon – just like she's been the best in the world in track and cross-country as well." Last week, Mac Fleet and I traveled to Boulder, Colo. to spend some time with the On Athletics Club and coach Dathan Ritzenhein. We got a chance to sit down and chat about the highs and lows of OAC's 2022 outdoor season + Hellen Obiri's upcoming marathon debut in New York City on Nov. 6. Obiri's move to Boulder has been in the works since she signed with the Swiss sportswear company in January with the intention of focusing on the roads. Ritzenhein worked closely with her agent and former coach Ricky Simms to make the transition as smooth as possible following her 67:05 victory at The Great North Run in September. We also spoke with Obiri about her fall plans a day before she won a silver medal in the 10,000m at the World Championships in Eugene, Oregon. You can watch this full interview with Ritzenhein uninterrupted on the CITIUS MAG YouTube channel. In this episode we welcome back Friend of the Pod, Anna Harding, a woman who has knocked out a number of marathons and ultras. I wanted to get her back to pick her brains about tapering. However, turns out she's an old hand at the Great North Run, which I've just run, so we kick off by talking about that... We talk about the brilliance of the great north run – the crowds, the route, the atmosphere – it was all such an incredible day, and it's lovely to reminisce. Then I pick her brains about the taper that we're in the middle of right now before the London Marathon. Holly is also ramping up her miles towards her half marathon, so we talk about the goals we need to be thinking about on the days of our races, and strategies to keep us sane and moving on those tricky miles. Anna has some fantastic advice on how to tick through the miles, and also some spot on practical advice for these last days before the marathon, with exactly what sort of running and mileage we should be doing in the last two weeks, and what we also need to be doing to give ourselves the best chance on the start line. Two big takeaways here – wash your hands lots to avoid catching any bugs in these last precious days, and get lots of sleep! At the end of the chat, Anna has some Big News about her next goal race – put it this way, the Loch Ness Marathon is in a week or so, and she's running it as one of her training long runs. So it's not that. It's a teensy bit longer....LinksHolly and I are doing our first Women's Running Podcast Live event on Zoom on Thursday 29th September! Welcome to episode 109 of the Women's Running podcast. I'm Esther Newman, your host, and she's Holly Taylor, your other host. We kick off this week's episode by talking about corrective eyewear, as you would probably expect. This segment finishes (finally) with Holly explaining how we can all get a “Beers For Life” token from her family. We finally get on to running and then chat about distraction techniques on longer runs, which Holly has been using as she's upping her mileage in her half marathon training. At this point I was still worried about upweighting the Great North Run into a longer run, but that will be all over and done with by the time this comes out, so fingers crossed it all went to plan!We talk strength training again, as a result of the workout that Holly did this week, which destroyed her slightly. So our main focus here is the dreaded DOMs and how to minimise them, and recover from them.We also talk about what it's like to live with people who aren't as enthusiastic about your running as you are – we'd love to know your thoughts on this. We hope your training and running is going well as we head into Autumn! I personally love Autumn because there's no danger of me having to wear a vest, so there we have it.Links: Find your new favourite bra at Maaree. Welcome to episode 108 of the Women's Running Podcast. I'm your host Esther Newman, and she's your other host, Holly Taylor. Holly's half marathon training is going well, and she's tentatively enthusiastic about tackling longer distances with her running buddy, and considering potentially a bit of walk running. We talk here about strength training, and the stuff we can do to support our running, and make everything easier. I talk to Holly about some simple bits of strength training she can do – and all of them are bodyweight (so no equipment required) and she can do them at home. Equally if she fancies a trip to the gym, she could easily do this using weights or machines at the gym to get a bigger session in. The trick here is to simplify strength training – it doesn't need to be a billion different moves, and it doesn't need to be complicated. Divvy yourself up into three sections: arms and shoulders, core (stomach, back and hips), and legs. Then think of three exercises – something like press ups, crunches and lunges. Do them 10 times, and repeat three times. And Bob is most firmly your uncle. Running will be, progressively more easy. And after a few weeks you can add in weights, up your reps, change up the exercises, whatever you like – you'll find LOADS of strength training on our website.I talk about my worries about running a half (the Great North Run) when I'm supposed to be running 20+ miles in training for the London Marathon, not 13.1, so I'm having to add a few miles on to it before or after. I want to know if anyone is doing something similar in the lead up to the marathon. We finish up by talking about the dreaded chafe, and in this instance, specifically boob chafe. As Holly says, “you don't want your tits to ruin your marathon”. Somehow she makes this an issue that she lays firmly at the door of the patriarchy, and who are we to disagree?LinksStart your running journey or find inspiration for beating your personal best with Forestry England. Welcome to episode 107 of the Women's Running podcast. I'm your host, Esther Newman, and she's your other host, Holly Taylor. So in this episode it's a bit of a game of two halves – despite our podcast dropping every week as normal, we've actually had a bit of a break, it being the summer holidays and all. But while I've been not-eating Cornish pasties, Holly has had a very different time of it. As candid as ever, she talks about the swerve in mental health she's suffered over the past fortnight, and the tools she's using to help bump her back up again. She also talks about how while she had once used running as one of those tools, this time around it's been less helpful for her (all that said, we know that generally speaking running can be a brilliant support for our mental health). On my side of things, I've been training for the Great North Run in September and the London Marathon in October – I've just about kept up with my plan while on holiday, but I've found the change in terrain and the second heat wave very challenging. And while ostensibly I'm on track, my mind is spiralling with all the things that *could* go wrong, and also all the reasons why the bad runs were bad, and why the good runs were good, and how all these things are going to affect my races negatively one way or another. Please tell us how your training is going! We also talk about some emails we've had in on the back of our chats about heckling, and they're really shocking. And again, do please let us know if you've had experiences like this – I think talking about it like we began to do during our We Will campaign is one of the best things we can do to raise awareness that this happens and how we feel as a result.LinksThis episode is sponsored by SportsShoes! Fiona Oakes is an elite marathon runner, who has completed over 100 marathons and finished in the top 20 in two of the world's Major Marathon series, winning the Main Start and placing in the top 20 in the Great North Run. She holds four Guinness recognized World Records in endurance events including being the fastest woman to run a Marathon on every Continent. But Fiona doesn't consider herself a great runner. All of her runs and accolades are in service of a greater purpose - care and love for animals. Fiona is a vegan.
