Em Nguyen, ABC News Correspondent in Washington, joins the show to discuss where she currently lies in the polls and what winning or losing this primary would mean for her.
Hosts: Leah Murray and Greg Skordas Eye on the Hill: Government transparency bills Leah and Greg kick off the show with KSL TV’s Daniella Rivera and Annie Knox, who dive into how the Legislature is thinking about restricting the public’s access to government information. Last week we talked about this while listening to an interview with First Amendment lawyer Jeff Hunt. Today we’re looking at some specific bills that relate to government transparency. Eye on the Hill: SB248 Permitted Occupations for Minor Amendments Sen. Karen Kwan is one of the very few Democrats we have up on Capitol Hill, so naturally Leah and Greg are curious… What’s it like being a Democrat in the Utah Legislature? To what extent are they able to get things done this session? Sen. Kwan joins the show to talk about her perspective and discuss a bill she’s sponsoring, SB248 Permitted Occupations for Minor Amendments. Eye on the Hill: H562 Utah Fairpark Area Investment and Restoration District Last week we heard the news that the Larry H. Miller Company is bringing Major League Baseball to Utah. This week, we know that Rep. Ryan Wilcox introduced legislation, HB562 Utah Fairpark Area Investment and Restoration District, which would create a district and a board to govern it so that a Major League Baseball stadium could be created on the west side of Salt Lake City. He joins the show to discuss how this would work and how we would pay for it. Eye on the Hill: HB29 Sensitive Material Review Amendments Rep. Ken Ivory is running a bill, HB29 Sensitive Material Review Amendments, which would “amend provisions regarding the evaluation of instructional material to identify and remove pornographic or indecent material.” He joins the show to explain why he proposed this bill and discuss some of the response he’s been getting about it. Eye on the Hill: HB429 State Employment Revisions There is a bill on Capitol Hill, HB429 State Employment Revisions, which talks about merit-based employment versus at-will employment. Greg and Leah explain the difference between the two types and break down what this bill would do for state employees. Is the South Carolina primary the last chance for Nikki Haley? Tomorrow is the South Carolina primary, and it doesn’t look too good for Nikki Haley despite the fact that this is her home state. Em Nguyen, ABC News Correspondent in Washington, joins the show to discuss where she currently lies in the polls and what winning or losing this primary would mean for her. Should SATs and ACTs be required for college admissions? The University of Utah is pausing SAT and ACT admissions requirements, at least for the short term. This follows a national trend in which nearly 2,000 colleges are no longer requiring these test scores. In Utah, several other universities do not require this in their admissions applications. So then… Are standardized tests still effective in measuring student success?
