Confusion over a social media post suggesting a tanker had been escorted through the strait, later contradicted by the White House, added to the volatility. Reports that Iran could be preparing to deploy mines in the vital shipping lane have kept markets on edge even as stocks staged a rebound. Then I get nerdy about Andreas Reckwitz's fascinating analysis of late modernity - how we've split into two warring tribes: the hyper-culture individualists seeking singular authenticity and the cultural essentialists clinging to collective identity. It's a compelling framework for understanding why we're all at each other's throats politically while the middle class gets squeezed into an hourglass shape. We also geek out over Byung-Chul Han's concept of positive violence, reminisce about U2 concerts with my son Elgin, and somehow end up discussing Rob Bell's uncanny resemblance to the lead singer of Matchbox Twenty. Searching For A Just God in the Midst of Oppression - With Nicky Pizaña & Adam Clark

This week I was joined by my friends Nicky Pizaña and Dr. Adam Clark for a challenging but important conversation. In 1973 Dr. William R. Jones published a book titled, "Is God A White Racist: A Preamble to Black Theology". In this book, Jones concluded that if the God of classical theism is true, then God is indeed a White Racist. Is the claim that God is the liberator of the oppressed empirically verifiable? Jones concludes that it is not... and if God is all powerful, then why is there so much oppression? I think Open & Relational Theology could offer a different perspective that takes Jones argument seriously, but could ultimately could allow us to say, "No! God is not a White Racist". Often times however, Black Theology and Liberation Theology have been hesitant to engage with the Open and Relational or Process Relational tradition. In this conversation Nicky and Adam engage with Jone's strong claims and challenge me on the adequacy of my Process-Relational approach. Enjoy! This week Rabbi Shai Held joins the podcast to discuss his latest book "Judaism is About Love: Recovering the Heart of Jewish Life". It goes without saying that there are A LOT of misconceptions about Judaism within the Christian tradition. To say it even more bluntly, there are a lot of Anti-Semitic and Anti-Jewish teachings and doctrines plaguing the Christian tradition today. In this conversation Rabbi Held explores how love isn't just a sentiment but a theological and ethical imperative deeply rooted in the Jewish tradition. In this episode, I team up with our producer, Josh Gilbert, for an experimental format inspired by our podcast planning sessions, where Josh often brings up intriguing questions he's gathered while editing. Together, we explore how our initial infatuation with ideas can grow into a deeper understanding and mastery and how our personal biases inevitably shape our philosophical inquiries.   We discuss the significance of philosophy in making sense of existence, agency, and how we apply ideas in everyday life. We talk about the value of curiosity and the ongoing journey of learning across the humanities, emphasizing the need to engage with philosophical texts critically and passionately. Josh pressed me on the distinction between plausibility and intensity of faith commitments, the existential register's importance in understanding religious identity, and how modern empiricism and cultural narratives influence individual agency.   Throughout the conversation, we weave in insights from thinkers like Alfred North Whitehead, Hans-Georg Gadamer, Søren Kierkegaard, Paul Tillich, Karl Barth, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, J.R.R. Tolkien, Martin Heidegger, Philip Goff, and Charles Taylor. Together, we explore how these voices create a community of inquiry that invigorates our understanding of life and existence, showing how philosophy can shape what we think and how we live.
