I've given focus to how we perceive our stories. We've also looked at toxic positivity and the damage of just trying to paint a pretty picture. We all encounter circumstances and events in our lives that challenge us. From massive traumas and tragedies to just disheartening disappointments. They all matter in regards to how we go forward in life. Following is a conversation that does not culminate with a formula. There is not contrite quote to sum it up. My guest is Karena Kilcoyne, who is a former trial lawyer who specialized in criminal defense, including complex white-collar and civil litigation in federal and state courts. Later in her practice, she worked as in-house counsel for a publicly traded worldwide manufacturing company. She was a success. But Karena started life as a kid. A kid who saw her dad taken to prison, and her mom succumb to mental illness. It's as hard of a story as they come. And it took its toll on her and drove her to succeed in the world and keep dying inside. Until, she gained a new vision of possibility. No fairy godmother or self-help epiphany, just a real, raw story, that I feel we can all relate to, and find hope and equipping with. She wrote a book about it titled, Rise Above The Story: Free Yourself from Past Trauma and Create the Life You Want. Analytical chemist Jane Kilcoyne was working in her biotoxin monitoring lab one day in 2018 when she noticed a bin overflowing with plastic waste. The observation prompted her to join forces with like-minded colleagues and develop a package of measures aimed at reducing their lab's carbon footprint. Their efforts include reducing energy consumption, composting shellfish waste, polystyrene recycling, and digitizing documentation. Labs are estimated to use 10 times more energy and five times more water than office spaces, she says, and the average bench scientist uses around 10 times more single-use plastics than the average person. Kilcoyne, who works at the Marine Institute, a government agency responsible for marine research, in Galway, Ireland, describes how their efforts feed into the thirteenth of 17 Sustainable Development Goals set by the United Nations in 2015 (to take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts). How to Save Humanity in 17 Goals is a podcast series that profiles scientists whose work addresses one or more of the SDGs. Episodes 13–18 are produced in partnership with Nature Sustainability, and introduced by Monica Contestabile, its chief editor. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the recent comments made by Cardinals team president Bill DeWitt III on 'The Kilcoyne Conversation' podcast with Martin Kilcoyne (hosted by the Scoops Sports Network). DeWitt referred to the notion of Cardinals fans deciding not to show up to games anymore in order to send a message to ownership regarding the fans' displeasure with the state of the club as an "illogical" line of thought. In doing so, DeWitt demonstrated a fundamental misunderstanding of what a team's relationship to its fans should be. Brenden dives into full depth on the comments and many elements surrounding them in this hour-long episode. Rise Above the Story: Free Yourself from Past Trauma and Create the Life You Want by Karena Kilcoyne https://amzn.to/3SdPNQR What do we do when the pain of the past is too much to bear? When trauma and shame overwhelm us? When we feel empty and worthless despite our success and daily triumphs? We rise above our story. Before Karena Kilcoyne was a successful criminal defense attorney, trauma defined her early life. Her mother tried to give her away at birth. Her father went to a federal penitentiary when she was 12, leaving the family poverty-stricken and Karena to care for her siblings and her mentally unstable mother. After her mother died, she adopted her 9-year-old brother and graduated from law school at the age of 24. She fought for the freedom of others while imprisoning herself in self-doubt, depression, and anxiety. Existing only in survival mode, she repeatedly recounted the stories she'd written about herself: that she would never be enough, that she could never be happy. In Rise Above the Story, Karena shares with raw vulnerability how she rose above her stories of abandonment, worthlessness, and shame. She'll help you let go of your own past by embracing every beautiful, imperfect piece of yourself—no matter what your story looks like. She'll teach you how to: Acknowledge your story. Identify the story that's limiting your life. Release your story. Discover how your story took over your life by unearthing your repressed fear and shame. Rise above your story. Explore how your hardships can serve you and learn how to finally love yourself unconditionally. Rising above your story will empower you to live the life of your dreams. Karena's beautifully simple, yet powerful, formula offers emotional freedom and unfettered joy when you're ready to embrace the vibrant, worthy, and lovable person you truly are. Your past doesn't define you—you do. It's time to rise above your story and live the authentic life you deserve. About the author Karena Kilcoyne is a former trial lawyer who specialized in criminal defense, including complex white collar criminal and civil litigation in federal and state courts. Later in her practice, she worked as in-house counsel for a publicly traded worldwide manufacturing company. Karena now passionately shares her own personal story of trauma and healing. Through vivid, evocative, and transparent storytelling, she teaches others how to rise above their own stories and find true peace and emotional freedom. She shares these powerful ideas through video and personal posts on Facebook and Instagram. Karena also corresponds regularly with the subscribers of her email newsletter. When she's not helping others rise above their stories, she's curating a colorful life full of books and art from far-flung places. Karena lives in Florida with her husband David and their furry son Irwin.
