Welcome to Warp My Tardis Podcast on the Geek Culturecast network. Check out Broadswords magazine at http://dmdave.com/broadsword-magazine-preorder-1/KJ and Chulak are back after a quick missed episode/break and there is a ton of news to share about the D23 Conference, especially about Star Wars as two series were announced: The Mandalorian and KenobiThe Mandalorian is about Bounty Hunters, and takes place between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens. In the teaser, we see IG-88 and Lando Calrissian among other known figures like storm troopers and rebel fighters. Not a lot is given away in the trailer other than lots of fighting, shooting up Imperials and possibly meeting up with new crime lords. There is a lot of circumstantial footage here. Who is the one under the armor, and why do they want to look like Bobba Fett? The Kenobi series is a greater concern. Taking place between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, this series goes through the hidden life of a Jedi on the run. The show looks good, and with Ewan McGregor back in the Obi-Wan role it has the opportunity to be something good. We just hope that they don’t take the story down a path that can’t be recovered from in the world of Star Wars CanonWe didn’t go deeply into the extended teaser trailer for Episode IX, but there is a ton of speculations there too related to the last scene with Rey and her double red sabres. Is this a force dream? A dark path like Luke travelled facing his own Dark Side? Or is this truly Rey’s turn toward a path that she cannot come back from? We will have to wait until December 20 to find out.Thank you for downloading, subscribing, listening and supporting Warp My Tardis here on the Geek Culturecast network. KJ raised the upcoming preparations for the next Mars Lander. JPL has had a ton of streaming coverage. Watch live as it is happening and that is a great thing as part of our modern world.Chulak introduced a documentary created by one man and his telescope, about how he went out and recorded the reactions of average people rediscovering the moon by telescope. The increasing world of robotics, integrated AI’s and the possibility of robots with empathy being your perfect partner… in every way. Broadsword is a monthly digital and printed magazine that provides DMs with ideas, tidbits and even complete side quests that can be fit into almost any campaign. Check out Broadswords magazine at http://dmdave.com/broadsword-magazine-preorder-1/On Legends of the Panel last week (Season 5, episode 14) we talked about the Comic Book announcements from San Diego ComicCon 2019. This week we address the SciFi announcements.Let’s start with Fox and the announcement that The Orville, the Seth Macfarlane Sci-Fi show paying homage to classic Star Trek: The Next Generation, will be moving from Fox Television to Hulu for season 3. Macfarlane made the announcement that due to other commitments, that to provide the show with the integrity that he wants, that Hulu makes more sense as a delivery method. No mention was made for international audiences on how the move to Hulu will affect them. KJ hopes that CRAVE TV will continue to host HULU content in Canada.CBS All Access hosted several events including two specific Star Trek announcements. One being the launch of Season 3 for STD… I mean Star Trek; Discovery. Now having followed the Red Angel 700 years into the future, we really don’t know what we are going to get with STD. New characters are coming onto the cast, but we are really left with the unknown a as the antique Discovery needs to find its place in what may be a dystopian future… or maybe not. What we do know is that they are indeed in the PICARD timeline.Speaking of Picard, the full trailer for the new Star Trek: Picard series looked fantastic. A combination of shows like Dark matter, Deep Six and FarScape as well as the traditional Star trek universe, and we now know at least 4 characters we love from the original TNG. Ryker and Troi are still matrimonius (is that a real word?) as well we now know that Commander Data and Seven of Nine have made their way to the new future. We can’t wait until late 2020 for this one. Also on the show we talked about several KickStarter Projects. Welcome to WarpMyTradis Podcast on the Geek Culturecast network. This episode: KJ and Chulak talk about Stranger Things and all things 80’s.Are you looking for new ideas and adventures for your RPG Group? How about a monthly magazine filled with plot twists, one shots and side quests? Look no further, DM Dave brings you Broadsword magazine. Broadsword is a monthly digital and printed magazine that provides DMs with ideas, tidbits and even complete sidequests that can be fit into almost any campaign. Check out Broadswords magazine at http://dmdave.com/broadsword-magazine-preorder-1/Right off the start, KJ is a child of the 70’s. So for alignment sake, the age of the kids in Stranger Things give or take a year aligns with KJ when he was growing up. That said KJ is far too analytical! Stranger Things is a beloved franchise adored by Gen Y and Millennials everywhere. The story is a combination (very lightly described) as X-Files meets the Goonies.Cinematically this program can go up against some great David Lynch programs including Twin Peaks or X-Files. If it gritty, and very well produced. The lighting and locations lend a lot to the drama of the series. The casting is perfect with Winona Ryder, David Harbour and Matt Modine as veteran performers. Bring this together with a likeable cast of young stars and it is a formula for success. Now if only we could get KJ past his own preconceived issues with the 80’s.Where most series on TV today move too quickly and don’t do a fantastic job of developing character relationships that are believable or that define the cast into archetypes, Stranger Things takes a more laid back approach, which throws KJ for a loop. The slow pacing with lots of time to build the characters is such a departure from 90% of the industry, that this completely threw KJ off.On our own rating scale, Chulak gives the first season of Stranger Things an 8.5 with season 2 and 3 both at 8.75. KJ has agreed to go back and try again to give this show a chance and not be so judgemental. This week on the show War of the Worlds… and we are not talking about Tom Cruise. Welcome to Season 4 Episode 10 of Warp my Tardis Podcast. KJ and Chulak got straight into tonight’s topic H.G. Wells The War of the Worlds, a Victorian era book about invaders from Mars, but also a social commentary on the expansion and domination of the British Empire. For tonight’s episode KJ and Chulak both watched the 1953 Hollywood version of the movie, which was directed and produced by a stellar group of individuals including Executive producer Cecile B DeMille. The movie, was typical of other films of the post-war era with big casts, lots of practical effects, and big budgets. The problem with War of the Worlds is that when you Americanize the story, it just loses something in translation. Somehow having listened to the Orson Wells radio broadcasts and comparing them against the 1953 film, there is much to be desired, but some of that KJ believes is because of the talent and believability of Orson Wells. On review, Chulak gives the 1953 movie a 7.5 and KJ a solid 8. But by today’s expected standards, the movie drops closer to a 4.5. While the visuals are stunning, the casting and story adaptation are just lacking.Next time on Warp My Tardis, KJ and Chulak will be reviewing the latest in the Kaiju films, Godzilla King of the Monsters. This week on the show The 100, the CW series. Welcome to Season 4 Episode 9 of Warp my Tardis Podcast. After the usual KJ and Chulak catch up, tonight’s topic was The 100 from the CW network. The show is currently in its 6th season and releasing new episodes on Netflix. The 100 is a story of a dystopian future where the world is irradiated, causing humanity to flee to the stars, or at least near earth orbit. The many space stations to conserve energy and resources join together to form “The Ark”. The only problem is that after 100 years, 5 generations in space… they only have 4 months of oxygen left. So to deal with the “overpopulation” issue… they eject criminals into space. They then decide to experiment to see if the radiation on earth has decreased enough to repopulate… so they select 100 juvenile delinquents and strap them into a jump ship with auto pilot and shoot them down at the planet surface. Nothing could possibly go wrong? The 100 season 1 and 2 both suffer from being filled with Sci-Fi Tropes at every turn. The show is loosely based on Lord of the Flies, only Piggy doesn’t get crushed at the bottom of the lake by a boulder. The series does not suffer on high production values, is well shot and directed, and has fantastic locations. It suffers because of the story being so predictable. It was like watching lost in space and star trek in one.Our ratings? After the usual KJ and Chulak catch up, tonight’s topic was Timeless which originally aired on NBC in October 2016. The show had 2 short seasons and one TV movie before it came off the air in 2018.Originally we were going to review the 1968 blockbuster hit ‘Barbarella’ staring Jane Fonda and directed by Dino De Laurentiis, famous film director and grandfather of Giada De Laurentiis acclaimed Food Network star. Unfortunately the show was removed from free viewing before we were able to both enjoy the sexual romp through interstellar Space and Love.Timeless is a story about Lucy, a Historian, Wyatt an ex Delta Forces Master Sergeant, and Rufus the programmer turned pilot of an experimental Time machine referred to as “The Life Boat”. The three embark on a journey through time when the experimental time machine “Mothership” developed by Mason Industries is hi-Jacked by a group of “Historical Terrorists” who plan to go back through history to change time. The “bad guys” Headed up by Garcia Flynn (Played by Goran Visnjic previously known as Dr Luca on ER) lead our protagonists through time from the crash of the Hindenburg, to the death of Abraham Lincoln to the days before Bay of Pigs and the Nevada Nuclear testing grounds. Eventually we find out that Rittenhouse, an organization that has funded the research and development of the machine are the bad guys, and Flynn joins forces with Wyatt and Lucy to stop them. The series was originally cancelled by NBC after the first Season, was brought back because of fan pressure for a shortened 2nd season and was then ended with a 2 part finale to wrap up a series that was far too short for our liking. Our ratings? Welcome to Season 4 of WarpMyTardis Podcast, Hosted by KJ The Comic Guy and Mr Chulak. On this episode your hosts talk about their two favorite Sci-Fi Series as they come up on their finales. StarTrek Discovery and The Orville. The Orville: Chulak and KJ both agreed that The Orville has really turned a corner this year as it went from a space comedy to a serious space drama series. The stability of the ensemble cast has been key to this success. The early season change from Halston Sage (Lt. Alara Katan) to Jessica Szohr (Lt Talla Ketali) went so smoothly that many of us (us included) have almost completely forgotten Alara’s name. Good story telling and consistent direction have really made The Orville a great fit in season 2 and we are glad that they are already in production for season 3. The season has not disappointed and gets a strong 8.3 rating.Star Trek Discovery: Where the Orville has consistency, Disco does not. The over arc of this season, while a compelling story, has suffered from too many directors (too many cooks spoil the broth) and a lack of continuity, as demonstrated in the first part of the season finale where if you didn’t watch the Star Trek Discovery shorts, you have no idea why Ensign Tilly is so excited when they arrive at the planet Xahea. Looking at the series across the whole season 2, it suffers from a bout of chaos mixed with apathy. Some of the characters are just not essential to the over arc, but seem to have been given stories as homage to TNG or TOS storylines. Even with all of this, and it being a show that when it comes to DVR, it’s okay to wait a day... It still gets a solid 8 or even 8.3Thank you for downloading, subscribing, listening and supporting WarpMyTardis here on the Geek Culturecast network. Initially becoming the apprentice to Galius the Court Physician, he saves Arthur from a murder plot by a witch and becomes Arthur’s man-servant.In this first episode we already build strong mentor/student relationships between Galius and Merlin, we also see the brother relationship building between Arthur and merlin. The beginnings of potential love interests of Morgana/Arthur and Gwen/Merlin, which if you have read the legends, we know is doomed to Gwen becoming Arthur’s queen, and Morgana as Merlin’s antithesis. The first two episodes of the first season demonstrate how the series will deal with magic, the beginnings of the political system of the time, as well as the feudal relationships of the serf and the land owners.Reviewing casting, direction, videography, writing and overall production/re-watch value, Chulak, KJ and Kate all give high marks for Merlin with overall ratings in the 8 to 8.5 range. At the end of the show KJ and Mr Chulak talked about recent events at SpaceX and Virgin Galactic as well as developments in the Tesla car market. Welcome to Season 4 of WarpMyTardis Podcast, Hosted by KJ The Comic Guy and Mr Chulak. On this episode The Lady Archer joins KJ The Comic Guy to talk about Shadowhunters: The Immortal Instruments which are a book series, a motion picture and a TV series.KJ and the Lady Archer getting together is like a whole lot of encyclopedias and librarians having a tea party. A whole lot of information sharing and sometimes more than you need.Shadowhunters: The Immortal Instruments was written by Cassandra Clare and is the story of Clary Fray’s search for her missing mother leads her into an alternate New York called Downworld, filled with mysterious faeries, hard-partying warlocks, not-what-they-seem vampires, an army of werewolves, and the demons who want to destroy it all. She also finds herself torn between two boys—her best friend, Simon, for whom she’s developing new feelings, and the mysterious Shadowhunter, Jace. She becomes a part of the secret world of the Shadowhunters and as she does, she discovers that rescuing her mother might mean jeopardizing everything the Shadowhunters work for.The Television Series based on this first book primarily as well as portions of the next several books, as Clary and the other Shadowhunters deal with deception, intrigue, espionage, deamons and of course supernatural relations.Unfortunately the original movie which is based only on the first book of the series, while on its own is a stellar example of book to screenplay, does not have the same deapth of character relationships that you get from the Canadian filmed series.Overall ratings for the TV show from KJ an 8.2 and Lady Archer a nice 8.5, and for the movie a 7.0 from KJ and 7.5 from the Lady ArcherThank you for downloading, subscribing, listening and supporting WarpMyTardis here on the Geek Culturecast network. Welcome to Season 4 of WarpMyTardis Podcast, Hosted by KJ The Comic Guy and Mr Chulak. On this episode your hosts talk about the SyFy Network (US) and Space Channel (CAN) series from 2015-2017 Dark Matter.Right from the beginning KJ and Chulak are completely enthralled with Dark Matter, there was talk about what made the series memorable, as well as KJ expanded on how Television Production works in Canada, and why most Canadian TV only gets 3 seasons. The original story is that the six-person crew of a derelict spaceship awakens from stasis in the farthest reaches of space. Their memories wiped clean, they have no recollection of who they are or how they got on board. The only clue to their identities is a cargo bay full of weaponry and a destination: a remote mining colony that is about to become a war zone. With no idea whose side they are on, they face a deadly decision. Will these amnesiacs turn their backs on history, or will their pasts catch up with them? One of the nice things about Dark matter was that the costuming, and off-ship scenic were all done in a time frame that allowed for modern materials and styles. No need for over the top creation of costumes and uniforms. Even the uniforms that are part of the show can be found at most police and paramedic tactical supply shops. This allowed the money to be spent on a believable interstellar ship and interior. This is possibly the thing that KJ appreciated most.Overall ratings from KJ an 8.4 and Mr Chulak a flat 8.0On another note, KJ talked about the Tana-Reef Foundation and the work of founder Chris Campana. Chris is an independent comic creator, cover artist, and also very good friend of the show. As part of Chris’ efforts with the not-for-profit organization created in memory of his new born son and fiancé who were both lost due to complications, Chris has commissioned a statue of “Gi-Gantic” Parker’s protector in the afterlife. This limited edition statue is available for pre-order at Chris’ website campanaart.org. We encourage everyone to check out the Foundation and show your support. At the end of the show KJ and Mr Chulak re-visited several shows to identify what next episode will be, and decided on the BBC Series Merlin to get back to our Fantasy roots. After the show ended KJ and Mr Chulak remembered that Mr Chulak will be on hiatus for the next two weeks as he hikes the Appalachian Trail, so KJ will be asking The lady Archer to join him on our next episode of WarpMyTardis to review ShadowHunters: The Mortal instruments, the paranormal series based on the books by Cassandra Clare (titled "The Mortal Instruments")Thank you for downloading, subscribing, listening and supporting WarpMyTardis here on the Geek Culturecast network. Welcome to Season 4 of WarpMyTardis Podcast, Hosted by KJ The Comic Guy and Mr Chulak. On this episode your hosts talk about the recently released MIB International Trailer, and of course the nostalga of the 1997 Men in Black with Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith.Mr. Chulak started us off with a bit of embarrassing memories of his fifth grade talent show and performing the MIB dance on stage (followed by the first 20 seconds of the original Will Smith Men in Black youtube video). The two hosts then jump into how MIB did as a film, what other films MIB went up against (like Dante’s Peak, Austin Powers, and Jurassic Park Lost World). It was no wonder that Rotten Tomatoes has a 92 for the tomatometer, and only 79% for the audience scoreThe original story is that an intergalactic assassin infiltrates earth in order to kill the embassador of a competing planet and destroy the universe that can be found on Orion’s belt…. The collar of the Ambassador’s cat. An elite, highly funded government organization recruits Will Smith (Agent J) and opens his eyes to an entire world that interacts within our own.The special effects were stellar and, not only the effects, but the props, costumes and prosthetics were amazing. Knowing that the comic license belongs to Marvel long before the Disney/Marvel universe, and that Sony Pictures owns the movie rights, it is no wonder that this movie did so well, .and that there is the potential for this new re-boot to do just as well. After viewing the new trailer, KJ and Mr Chulak reviewed the potential of Tessa Thompson (Thor Ragnarok), Chris Hemsworth (Avengers, Thor), Liam Nieson (Star Wars, Batman Begins) and Emma Thompson (Nanny McFee, Harry Potter) as the main and supporting cast of this film. It is going to be an epic summer film releasing June 14At the end of the show KJ and Mr Chulak re-visited several shows to identify what next episode will be, and decided on Lost Giel, a Showtime Canada/Netflx series. Welcome to Season 4 of WarpMyTardis Podcast, Hosted by KJ The Comic Guy and Mr Chulak. On this episode your hosts talk about the hiatus of the last month, and then break right into the new seasons of Seth MacFarlane's The Orville, and the CBS Series, Star Trek: Discovery. At the end of the show, Mr Chulak gives his first impressions of the new Roswell Show on the CW Network. After the usual catch up and banter between your hosts, KJ and Chulak got right into their very enthusiastic reviews of The Orville. So far this season does not disappoint, with episodes that are mildly reminiscent of The Next Generation. We have also seen the first departure of one main character from the show as Lt. Alara Katan played by Halston Sage returns to her home planet Xelayah. This episode ending reminds KJ very much of the loss of Tasha Yar on Next Gen, or Wesley Crusher going off to Starfleet Academy. Both hosts give The Orville ratings in the mid to high 8's There is much to look forward to with this series.CBS All Access brought back the mid-season Star Trek Discovery in January, and the new Captain doesn't disappoint, nor does the existing cast and level of drama and action. Anson Mount as Captain Christopher Pike is a welcome addition to the shows cast, and we see a great deal of new development for a number of the cast including Doug Jones and Saru, Mary Wiseman as Lt. Tilly, and Sonequa Martin-Green as Micheal Burnham. The show is dealing with the Prime Directive, General Order 1 and Spock in a psychiatric ward, just to name the goings on in the first episode.Definite 9 ratings for this one.In an interesting comparison KJ and Chulak discuss the differences between these two series and why the two of them work so well for viewing audiences, from technology, grit and charisma, to story writing and our interpretation of what each of these series should be. Orville bringing an episodic story with each one being self-contained, versus Discovery with the overarching idea that there is a major story that we will get through, its just going to take the whole season.Mr. Chulak closed the show with a brief overview of the CW's Roswell New Mexico, a time-jump story of the original characters from the Roswell TV series back in the 90's. And sometimes the 90's should just be left alone. The show has moments of brilliant Sci-Fi ideas, but is just too dramatic and Soap-Opera like.Thank you for downloading, subscribing, listening and supporting WarpMyTardis here on the Geek Culturecast network. Partially because of the cast tie-in of Casper Van Dien, but mostly because KJ likes Dina Meyer.Contact us at:email: warpmytardis@gmail.comtwitter: @warpmytardisinstagram: @warpmytardisAnd our other shows Legends of the Panel @legendspanel and the Lady Archer on Instagram as @whatthefraq
