Autistic representation in Star Trek “Perhaps you're just different,” Tam Elbrun tells Data in the Next Generation episode “Tin Man.” “Not a sin, you know, though you may have heard otherwise.” Both characters—the emotionally sensitive Betazoid and the supposedly emotionless android—have been seen by fans as allegories of a particular kind of difference, standing in for those on the broad spectrum of neurodiversity. In this episode of Primitive Culture, host Duncan Barrett is joined by autistic Star Trek fan Thad Hait to discuss how Trek has encoded the experiences of neurodiverse people—often accidentally—over the course of its long history. Looking at characters such as Data, Seven of Nine, Reginald Barclay, and Sylvia Tilly, we consider how Starfleet's approach to difference both mirrors and differs from our own, and ask whether the time is ripe for Trek's first explicitly neurodiverse character. Ruthie & Brian discuss the season finale of Star Trek: Discovery S4E13, titled Coming Home. The DMA approaches Earth and Ni'Var. Discovery makes a final attempt to stop it. It was written by showrunner Michelle Paradise and directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi. We both liked this finale. It was probably our second favorite of the four season finales of Discovery, behind Season 2.

Created by Gene RoddenberryOriginally pitched as “Wagon Train to the stars.”Each episode was meant to work on to levels, one of morality and one of suspenseful adventure stories. Trekkie or Trekker = Star Trek Fan Things to know:Enterprise is main ShipStarfleet is like united nations: Peaceful, Diplomatic, Explorers, multiple Alien RacesKlingons = bad, but not all the timeSymbol for Starfleet is the Starfleet Delta, it changes through out time. Many gadgets and inventions made their way to real life (iPads, Cellphones, wireless communicators, Alexa/Google home)Uniforms have a purpose, which shows ranks and which division you are withCaptains = Main Character Enterprise (22nd Century)•The Original Series (1966–1969) on CBS A bit more in the vein of “Wagon Train to the Stars”. Very Episodic Campy to a Fault at times o William Shatner as Captain James T. Kirk o Leonard Nimoy as Spock o DeForest Kelley as Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy o James Doohan as Montgomery "Scotty" Scott o Nichelle Nichols as Uhura o George Takei as Hikaru Sulu o Walter Koenig as Pavel Chekov Still popular in syndication for nearly two decades Considered ground breaking for multi-racial cast Tackled some civil rights issues Popularized Fan conventions & Fan Fiction •The Animated Series (1973–1974) on CBS Reprised a majority of the Cast Not well received by Many Trek fans Considered non-Canon Movies 1-6 based on Original Cast Modern Series (23rd Century)• The Next Generation (1987–1994) on Independent channels Created because the Movies did so well, but Paying William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy would be costly, so new unknown cast = cheaper to produce Created to continue longevity of franchise. o Patrick Stewart as Captain Jean-Luc Picard o Jonathan Frakes as Commander William Riker o Marina Sirtis as Deanna Troi o Michael Dorn as Worf o Gates McFadden as Dr. Beverly Crusher o LeVar Burton as chief engineer Geordi La Forge o Brent Spiner as Data o Wil Wheaton as Wesley Crusher Reintroduced Star Trek to Modern audience, popularized many races that would play rolls in later series Episodic in Nature, but many episode would have themes/character returning to reprise conflicts Popularized the Season Ending Cliffhanger Movies 7-10 Based off TNG Cast • Deep Space Nine (1993–1999) on Independent channels Created as Star Trek was BIG o Avery Brooks as Commander/Captain Benjamin Sisko o Nana Visitor as Major/Colonel Kira Nerys o René Auberjonois as Odo o Armin Shimerman as Quark as Bar o Alexander Siddig as Lieutenant Julian Bashir o Terry Farrell as Lieutenant/Lieutenant Commander Jadzia Dax o Nicole de Boer as Ezri Dax o Michael Dorn as Commander Worf as o Colm Meaney as Chief Miles O'Brien o Cirroc Lofton as Jake Sisko Episodes are more Serialized than Episodic Instead of a traveling ship, set in a stationary star base, allowing writers to create more compelling and dramatic character interactions/Interpersonal Conflics. Mix of Religious and Science conflicts Shows a full scale War from eyes of Starfleet No Movies were made • Voyager (1995–2001) on UPN Created with the intention of starting a new network/tv channel. Star Trek: Discovery – Season 2, Episode 9: Project Daedalus For a supersized episode 34 of The Star Trek Discovery Podcast, Ruthie and I discuss Season 2 Episode 9 of Star Trek: Discovery, which is titled, Project Daedalus. This episode was written by the newly announced co-showrunner of Season 3, Michelle Paradise, who is currently a co-executive producer on the show, and it was directed by Jonathan Frakes, who you should all know played Commander William T. Riker on TNG and the movies that followed, and has been a longtime director of Trek, including Star Trek: First Contact and Star Trek: Insurrection. This is his third time directing Discovery. Discussion on Project Daedalus begins at 13:00… We begin the podcast with feedback from the previous episode. We get into this episode at 13 minutes exactly. Fred’s Pics! We have been blessed yet again with pics chosen by Fred from The Netherlands, including the cover image. We are going to do something different this week, and feature JUST the pictures this week. We’ll go back to a more traditional blog post next week. Before you look at the Project Daedalus pics… We did a flip of last week’s ratings. Ruthie gave this one a 10, whereas I gave it a 9. Without details, I will just say that the episode reminded me a lot of what happened to T-Dog from The Walking Dead. Airiam was a character we finally got to know and then she’s gone. We’ll be back in (hopefully less than) a week with our next episode. Get in your feedback As always, your feedback is essential to this podcast! We’ll be having a short feedback deadline most weeks this season, due to scheduling issues. We’ll cover more feedback from S2E9 Project Daedalus, so do not hesitate to send in your feedback if you miss the deadline. For Star Trek: Discovery S2E10, which is titled The Red Angel, the deadline to get in your feedback is Friday, March 22, 2019, at 6 PM Eastern/5 PM Central or 11 PM UTC. You can submit feedback via the GSM Feedback page, Facebook Group, Twitter, you can email startrekgsm at gmail dot com, or call the voicemail at (216) 236-5449 and leave us a message there. Make sure to mention you’re calling The Star Trek Discovery Podcast when you call. I’m also podcasting on The Walking Dead. Because of this schedule, we are trying to get our episodes down to a more reasonable podcast length. To help with this, we’d like you to focus on a few key points from the episode, rather than discussing everything about the episode. If submitting a voicemail, please try to keep your calls to 4 minutes or less, with an absolute maximum of 5 minutes. We would like to keep our episodes under 2 hours! Please help with that! We failed MISERABLY this week. Links to us… Want to participate? Join our Facebook group! And follow us on Twitter! And don’t forget to subscribe to us on Apple Podcasts! While you do

This episode was written by Dan Dworkin & Jay Beattie, and it was directed by TJ Scott. Discussion on If Memory Serves begins at 13:41… We begin the podcast with feedback from the previous episode. We get into this episode at 13 minutes 41 seconds. Fred’s Pics and Spoiler Alert! We have been blessed yet again with pics chosen by Fred from The Netherlands, including the cover image. We will show them throughout this blog post. To that end, SPOILER ALERT! If you haven’t watched If Memory Serves, you may want to stop reading here! Previously on Star Trek!!! In an unprecedented move, that many people say was brilliant, our “Previously on…” segment at the start of the show had something we have never seen before. It was “Previously on” from another Star Trek show! In this case, of course, it was “Previously on Star Trek”. We saw some classic images from the first pilot episode of Star Trek, titled, “The Cage”, which was also featured in the two-part TOS episode, “The Menagerie”. For me, this was very unexpected but very welcomed. It also signaled something I already knew but it was good to have the evidence: This show takes place in the same prime timeline as The Original Series, TNG and all the rest of the series that followed. It’s just a visual and technological update to bring it to a 2019 standard, but it follows the same story canon as all the other shows. The success or failure of what the producers did was discussed at length. I loved it, understood what it meant, and was so happy to see them do this. Ruthie, on the other hand, was confused by it, and she talks about why at length during the episode. STDP 033 – Star Trek Discovery S208 (00:32) – Blue Talosian flowers (The Cage). STDP 033 – Star Trek Discovery S208 (00:43) – Talosians (The Cage). Talos IV!!! Vina!!! When Burnham and Spock arrive in the Talos system, they encounter a black hole, or is it? Of course, it’s just a projection from the Talosians. Spock comes out of his state to take control of the shuttlecraft.

It was written by co-producers Bo Yeon Kim & Erika Lippoldt, who are said to be the creators of the new Section 31 series, and directed by Douglas Aarniokoski. You may have seen this referred to as The Sounds of Thunder, as all of the outlets had it as Sounds, but when it premiered, it was only a singular Sound. I’ve already seen several podcasts and YouTubers have it wrong. The Sound of Thunder is correct. Discussion on The Sound of Thunder begins at 17:50… We begin the podcast with feedback from previous episodes. Then, we finally get into this episode at 17 minutes 50 seconds in. Saru hasn’t been back since he left, but since going through the vahar’ai, he has undergone certain changes. Saru doesn’t immediately leave the captain’s chair when Pike is summoned to the bridge, and later borders on being insubordinate when Pike doesn’t choose him for the away team. He previously directed S1E7 Magic to Make the Sanest Man Go Mad. Fred’s Pics! We have been blessed yet again with pics chosen by Fred from The Netherlands, including the cover image. We will show them throughout this blog post. Discussion on Saints of Imperfection begins at 18:12… We begin the podcast with feedback from previous episodes, and Ruthie’s take on last week’s episode, since she was out sick. Then, we finally get into this wonderful episode a little over 18 minutes in. A very cool looking episode! From the Section 31 tech to the partial spore jump, to the beauty of the mycelial network, this episode was beautiful. This show just keeps outdoing itself visually! STDP 030 – Discovery’s Partial Jump STDP 030 – Bridge In The Network Another Tough One for Tilly… Taken to the mycelial network to kill a monster, Tilly has yet another tough episode, but one that she comes through in the end with support from her friends. This may be the end of that connection with May, but I have a feeling that those two will meet again. One thing I said during recording was that I didn’t feel that the emotional connection between Tilly and May didn’t seem earned, but I have rethought that stance. I can see it now. STDP 030 – Discovery In The Mycelial Network The Return of Culber! One of the worst kept secrets in Star Trek history, Culber has returned, although it is a new Culber, reconstituted in the mycelial network. How much of the old Culber is in this new Culber is hard to know, but if you think this is far fetched, remember Star Trek III: The Search for Spock! Is this anymore far fetched than if it was his katra? STDP 030 – Culber In The Network Georgiou and Section 31! We got another long glimpse at what the Section 31 series may be like in this episode. With Georgiou, Tyler, newcomer Leland and (possibly) Admiral Cornwell, who showed up near the end of the episode, we could definitely see those characters in that show. To me, it’s looking more and more interesting. Sparks fly when the Discovery captures Spock’s shuttlecraft, only to find that Georgiou is piloting it. We think Pike may put two and two together about Georgiou if he knows where Lorca came from. There were some interesting scenes between Georgiou and Burnham and more interesting actions by the former Mirror Emperor that will keep us guessing. What are her true intentions? We’ll have to keep watching to find out! STDP 030 – Georgiou Hands Up

We have been blessed yet again with pics chosen by Fred from The Netherlands, including the cover image. We will show them throughout this blog post. A Tough One for Saru… It was a tough episode for Commander Saru. It looked like we would be losing the first and only Kelpien in Starfleet during this episode, and they sold that death. I had myself questioning it. Could they kill him off? Would this be the right time to do that? I knew we see his sister Siranna in the last trailer, but I thought that maybe it could end up being a flashback or a hallucination before death. When it looked like he was going to die, though, he didn’t die. He evolved. One of his most problematic traits, his threat ganglia, are gone for good, and he feels like he’s never felt before. I loved the Burnham/Saru scenes, showing that the bickering we had seen early on was the behavior of brother and sister. It took a tragedy for them both to admit it to each other, and to themselves. So, what will become of Saru, and the Kelpiens, who were being culled, seemingly as a part of a big lie. Time will tell. STDP 029 – Saru in Full Makeup I liked Saru’s quarters, by the way. Very idyllic. STDP 029 – Saru’s Quarters A Tough One for Tilly… This was also a tough episode for Tilly, and looks like the next one will be, too. The blob formerly seen as May has attached itself to Tilly, and isn’t going to easily let go. Tilly gets a drill to the head to facilitate communications, which had to hurt. At the end of the episode, we see Tilly’s been consumed by the blob. For what purpose, we cannot know. STDP 029 – A Distressed Tilly

We explain our thoughts about it… or mine, at least, that the spore drive needs to be explained away, especially with respect to what happens with the Voyager a century later. Although I won’t detail it here, we go through our thoughts here, and I explain a theory that would explain the spore drive and everything we are seeing so far this season at the end of the episode. If you want to know much, you’ll have to listen! Now THIS is Star Trek! This episode advanced the Red Angel plot while feeling like a classic Star Trek story that we all remember! We start with Burnham showing Pike the drawings made by Spock that predict the seven signals months before they ever appeared. Like before, when they get there, the signal has gone away, but Discovery finds an M-class planet that we later learn is called Terralysium, which is much like Earth, but with a radioactive asteroid belt. Like many stories before it, the crew finds a human colony broadcasting a signal over 200 years. It appears the Red Angel had brought a group of 200 that were hiding from the bombs in a church during World War III, just before nuclear bombs were about to be dropped on them. STDP 027 – The Red Angel Church We end up with a “Prime Directive” story (which is called General Order 1 at this point in Federation history) about whether or not the colonists that have settled in New Eden should be told that Earth survived the war and went on to help create the Federation or allow them to evolve their own way without intervention. Unfortunately, the asteroid field is about to fall out of orbit an

For episode 27 of The Star Trek Discovery Podcast, Ruthie and I discuss Star Trek: Discovery - S2E2, which is titled, New Eden. The teleplay is by Vaun Wilmott & Sean Cochran, and story by Akiva Goldsman & Sean Cochran. It was directed by none other than Picard's Number One, Jonathan Frakes, who of course played Commander William T. Riker in Star Trek: The Next Generation. He masterfully directs this nearly standalone story that still fits in the arc, yet feels like classic Star Trek!

Star Trek: Discovery – Season 2, Episode 2: New Eden For episode 27 of The Star Trek Discovery Podcast, Ruthie and I discuss Season 2 Episode 2 of Star Trek: Discovery, which is titled, New Eden. The teleplay is by Vaun Wilmott & Sean Cochran, with story by Akiva Goldsman & Sean Cochran. It was directed by someone who should need no introduction, Jonathan Frakes, who of course played Commander William T. Riker in Star Trek: The Next Generation, and is no stranger to directing Star Trek, directed Star Trek: First Contact and Star Trek: Insurrection, and a total of 17 episodes of TNG, DS9, VOY and Discovery (including S2E9 later this season). Fred’s Pics! We have been blessed yet again with pics chosen by Fred from The Netherlands, including the cover image. We will show them throughout this blog post. Last time on The Star Trek Discovery Podcast! We start this episode with some feedback from our last episode. The talk about the spore drive seemed to hit a nerve. Star Trek: Discovery – Season 2, Episode 1: Brother For episode 26 of The Star Trek Discovery Podcast, Ruthie and I discuss the Season 2 premiere of Star Trek: Discovery – S2E1, which is titled, Brother. It was written by Ted Sullivan & Gretchen J. Berg & Aaron Harberts (the latter two were the showrunners at the time this was filmed), and it was directed by the current showrunner and co-creator, Alex Kurtzman. We both loved this supersized movie-like premiere! If you haven’t given Discovery a try, this epic episode is one you can jump right in! We LOVE Captain Pike!!! If you’ve seen TOS (“The Cage” and “The Menagerie”) or the Kelvin Timeline films – specifically “Star Trek” (2009) and “Star Trek Into Darkness” (2013) – you are probably aware of Captain Christopher Pike, who captained the Enterprise before Kirk took command, but we didn’t know about his stint as the captain of the Discovery, while the Enterprise underwent extensive repairs after suffering severe ship-wide system failure. Pike takes command of the Discovery to investigate seven red bursts throughout spread out across more than thirty thousand light-years, but he considers it “shared custody” with Saru. Pike makes this episode, and if this episode is any indication, Pike will quickly become a fan favorite, if he isn’t already! They Have Stepped It Up This episode looks like a blockbuster movie! It looks every bit as good as the three Kelvin Timeline films. There have been reports that Berg & Harberts lost their showrunner jobs in part because the first three episodes went way over budget. I was skeptical of this report until I saw this first episode. When I said it looks like a hundred million dollars was spent on this episode, I wasn’t exaggerating. I know it wasn’t, but the quality of the visuals has far eclipsed what we saw in Season 1, which was already made it one of the best looking TV shows going. Fred’s Pics! In addition to our cover image, Fred from The Netherlands also provided us with some images from Brother! Thanks again, Fred!!! If you watched the first Short Trek, Runaway, you may have noticed a resemblance between Po and Commander Nhan. I know I did, enough that I had to check to see who played Nhan. Well, Fred thought Nhan was a Xahean, like Po. However, it’s been determined that she’s a Barzan, the aliens who tried to sell rights to the Barzan wormhole in TNG’s Season 3 episode, “The Price”. This first couple of images focus on Nhan, and how she compares to the Xahean leader, Po and the Barzan leader, Bhavani. STDP 026 – Comparing Po vs. Commander Nhan STDP 026 – Nhan is Barzan Here’s a great pic of Captain Pike, just as Discovery is about to be taken out of warp.
