The South African Human Right Commission has found that fundamental human rights were violated in the Enyobeni tavern tragedy which claimed the lives of 21 teenagers at Scenery Park, just outside East London in the Eastern Cape. The Enyobeni tragedy involved victims aged between 14 and 20 years who died while celebrating their end of year exams. Owners of the tavern, Siyakhangela and Vuyokazi Ndevu have already been found guilty, of selling alcohol to minors and have been given a five-thounsand rand fine each or a hundred days in prison. Reading out the report, Commissioner Berlinda Kwinana had the following to say.

In a tragic incident on June 25, 2022, 22 teenagers were found dead at Enyobeni Tavern in East London, sparking investigations into the circumstances. Underage access to the bar raised concerns and led to the revocation of its liquor license. Witnesses reported a suffocating smell, suggesting a possible gas leak, while forensic analysis hinted at substance ingestion or inhalation, with methanol identified as a potential factor. The ongoing investigation has resulted in arrests for serving alcohol to minors, and the South African National Civic Organization is supporting the victims' families.
