Send us Fan MailIn this thought-provoking Floc It Friday episode, Rudy Stankowitz takes a step away from chemistry myths, manufacturer sound-offs, and social media debates to explore a topic that has generated considerable discussion in both the pool industry and online communities: natural swimming pools. Drawing from four peer-reviewed scientific studies provided by Professor Charles Gerba, Rudy examines what the current scientific literature actually says about biological water treatment systems, pathogen control, microbial communities, and public health. Before diving into the science, Rudy also shares a personal message recognizing National PTSD Awareness Month, discussing the unseen challenges many industry professionals carry and reminding listeners that they are never alone in their struggles. In This Episode Why natural swimming pools represent a fundamentally different philosophy from traditional disinfected pools  The role of biological treatment systems, regeneration zones, gravel beds, and microbial communities  A review of a documented 2001 German outbreak involving more than 200 illnesses associated with a public nature-like swimming pond  What researchers discovered about swimmer exposure, water ingestion, and viral transmission  The findings of a Canadian risk assessment examining pathogen behavior in natural swimming ponds  How filtration rates, turnover times, and treatment efficiency influence health outcomes  The potential role of UV disinfection and why questions remain about its interaction with biological ecosystems  Research from Spain examining microbial populations and fecal contamination in natural swimming pools  Wildlife as a potential source of contamination in recreational waters  The importance of biofilms and the complex microbial communities that inhabit them  Why cyanobacteria, algae, and aquatic microbiology continue to raise important scientific questions  The challenges of identifying microbial populations without site-specific testing  What a 2024 One Health review reveals about algae, cyanobacteria, recreational water quality, and public health  The difference between visible water quality and the unseen biological processes occurring beneath the surface  Why scientific uncertainty is not a weakness, but a critical part of the scientific process Key TakeawayThe current scientific literature does not conclude that natural swimming pools are inherently unsafe, nor does it suggest that all questions surrounding their operation have been answered. Instead, the research consistently points toward the need for continued study, monitoring, challenge testing, and a deeper understanding of the biological communities responsible for water treatment. As Rudy emphasizes throughout the episode, science advances not by defending positions, but by asking better questions. Topics Discussed Natural swimming pools  Biological water treatment  Recreational water health risks  Pathogen control  Biofilms  Cyanobacteria  Algae ecology  Public health  Water quality monitoring  Environmental microbiology  Charles Gerba  Risk assessment  One Health research Mentioned During the Episode Professor Charles Gerba  Canadian Natural Swimming Pool Risk Assessment  German Nature-Like Swimming Pond Outbreak Investigation  Spanish Natural Swimming Pool Microbial Study  2024 One Health Review on Algae and Recreational Waters  National PTSD Awareness Month SponsorsThe 2026 Talking Pools Podcast Pool Industry Mentor Award is proudly supported by: BlueRay XL  LaMotte Company  Revved Up Apparel  Aqua Comfort Water Group Research on Natural Pools https://drive.google.com/file/d/1QpahWoVh3DDoNPwdw3oFsnbmUEj_umrS/view?usp=sharingConnect With Talking Pools

Residential vs. Commercial Pools: No Contest

Commercial pool service can look like the fast lane to bigger revenue, until you realize how many forces you do not control. We walk through the real differences between residential pool care and commercial pool maintenance, starting with what “commercial” actually means: community-used pools like apartments, HOAs, hotels, the YMCA, and public facilities that live under health department oversight. That oversight changes your day, your paperwork, and your stress level in ways most new techs do not see coming. We get specific about the operational realities: inspections, daily logs, and shutdown triggers tied to chlorine and pH ranges, plus the unpredictable stuff like user behavior that can close a pool even when you did your job. We also talk about the people side of the business, because commercial accounts often add management companies, approval delays, and the challenge of pleasing 30 or 40 voices instead of one homeowner. If you have ever felt stuck waiting on authorization while a motor is down and the water is slipping, you will recognize this problem instantly. Then we dig into the money, the right way. Yes, commercial accounts can pay significantly more, but they usually demand three to five visits a week, higher insurance limits, and a “headache factor” you should price honestly. We also cover the risk of concentrating your income in a few large accounts and the cash-flow pain that can come with net-30 billing and slow payments. If you are deciding what kind of pool service route to build, this conversation will help you choose with open eyes. If this helped you, subscribe, share it with a pool pro friend, and leave a quick review so more service techs can find the show.We break down why residential pool care often beats commercial pool care for working pool pros, even when commercial accounts look more lucrative. We compare regulation, workload, pricing, risk, and the day-to-day realities that make one route easier to live with and easier to keep stable.  • defining commercial pools vs residential backyard pools  • health department regulation, inspections, and required logs  • certification differences like CPO requirements for commercial work  • dealing with management companies, approvals, and multiple stakeholders  • heavy bather load and why commercial water turns faster  • shutdown triggers and chemistry ranges that can get you closed  • pricing a commercial account, including the “headache factor”  • higher insurance requirements and building costs into bids  • time demands, service frequency, and why mixing routes is hard  • concentration risk when you lose a high-dollar account  • payment delays, net-30 billing, and the hassle of collections  Join the Pool Guy Coaching Program. A single line on a label can shake an entire trade, especially when that trade has been using the product for 30 plus years. We pick back up with Scott Hamilton, the CEO of United Chemical, to sort out what the EPA's “not for use in outdoor pools” language is really responding to, and whether the bromate concern is being evaluated in a way that matches real pool conditions. We get into the chemistry behind bromate exposure, including why some researchers argue it should not be assessed with a strictly linear model. Scott explains the case for looking at thresholds and real-world dose, plus the research showing how stomach acid can reduce a large portion of trace bromate back into bromide. We also talk about what makes the EPA process move slowly: protocol review, data acceptance, and the very real staffing and workload constraints that can turn a decision into a multi-year timeline. Then we zoom out to the business and legal side of pool chemical regulation. Why do some products stop claiming they “kill algae” even when pros swear they work? Because pesticidal claims trigger registrations, state-by-state fees, and a compliance burden that can be brutal. We also address the fear factor directly, how to think about risk tolerance, and why transparency matters when the manufacturer has a stake in the outcome. If you want to judge the study for yourself, we point you to the download link.Subscribe for more pool industry deep dives, share this with a tech who's debating sodium bromide, and leave a review with your take: should outdoor pool labeling follow worst-case assumptions or field-relevant data?We keep talking with Scott Hamilton about the EPA's interim stance on sodium bromide labels and what the latest bromate data actually says about real-world risk. We weigh the science, the legal reality of pesticidal claims, and why transparency matters when pool pros have relied on a product for decades.  • how bromate exposure is being modeled and why linear risk assumptions may not fit real pool use  • what research says about stomach acid reducing trace bromate back to bromide  • how the EPA makes interim decisions and what it would take to revisit or reverse them  • why some manufacturers remove algae-kill claims and how registration fees shape labels  • how to think about risk tolerance alongside other common pool industry hazards  • why publishing methods and raw data helps the industry move past rumors  If you'd like to see a copy of the study, there's going to be a link in this podcast description for you.  You can download that study and read it for yourself.  If you're looking for part one, again go to my website, swimmingprolearning.com, click on the podcast icon, and open a drop-down menu of other podcasts that I've done before.  If you're interested in the coaching program, you can learn more at PoolGuyCoaching.com.  Download the full Sodium Bromide Study:https://drive.google.com/file/d/1X6-1uJJ7MZugeRDpch0tpop2vg0hjPR0/view?usp=sharingSend us Fan MailSupport the Pool Guy Podcast Show Sponsors! The EPA's sodium bromide relabeling decision didn't just tweak a bottle panel, it pulled a familiar algae treatment tool out of the outdoor pool conversation overnight. We're joined by Scott Hamilton, the CEO of United Chemical to explain what the EPA's interim decision actually says, why “not for use in outdoor pools” now shows up on sodium bromide-based algaecides, and how that single change ripples through distribution when big suppliers decide they won't stock the category at all. From there, we get practical and technical. Scott walks us through worst-case outdoor testing designed to stress the chemistry: high pH, zero cyanuric acid (CYA), and heavy liquid chlorine dosing in above-ground pools. We talk bromate formation, why the EPA leans on conservative assumptions like 100% conversion, and what the real-world data shows instead, including the striking difference between treating a pool with active algae versus clean water. If you've ever wondered why timing matters, we dig into the “first hour” window where most bromate formation tends to occur and what actually drives the reaction. We also zoom out to risk, regulation, and perception: how Prop 65 style warning logic shapes the conversation, how the EPA swim model estimates ingestion exposure over a lifetime, and the question every pool pro asks, why hot tubs still get a pass while outdoor pools don't. Subscribe for part two, share this with a pool pro who's navigating algae season, and leave a review with your take on the ruling. We sit down with Scott Hamilton from United Chemical to unpack the EPA's interim decision that forces sodium bromide products to remove outdoor pool use from their labels and triggers major supply chain fallout. We dig into bromate formation, what worst-case testing actually shows, and why the first hour after dosing becomes the key battleground in the chemistry debate.  • who the interim decision affects and why labels now read not for outdoor pools  • why Pool Corp and others stop carrying sodium bromide products  • how the EPA reaches decisions when it does not run its own controlled lab tests  • worst-case outdoor testing design using high pH, zero CYA, and heavy liquid chlorine  • what the data shows with algae present versus clean water  • why most bromate formation happens in the first hour  • how proprietary ingredients can suppress bromate formation  • how Prop 65 and linear risk models shape public perception  • why hot tubs get treated differently under the EPA exposure assumptions  Are you a pool service pro looking to take your business to the next level? Subscribe to our YouTube channel On our political radar this week… Donald Trump says he's getting bored with his war, doesn't care about the mid-terms … but is laser focused on what matters: his reflecting pond renovation, diverting money from national parks for his D.C. cleanup, the Arc ‘d Trump, taking over DC golf courses, the UFC version of the ancient gladiator battles to the death, and reminding us daily that he's passed a dementia screening test four times. His latest middle finger to the nation: suggesting that the Las Vegas-style Fight Club arena on what used to be the White House lawn become a permanent part of the landscape. Vegas has the Dome and Elvis Wedding chapel; the home of Presidents, if Trump has his way, will have its own dome and a massive wedding reception hall. And it's being reported that Trump is looting money from National Parks maintenance to pay for his July 4 fireworks show, the Reflecting Pool, a White House helipad and DC cleanup projects. He'll burn up 1.6-million dollars blowing up stuff on the 4th … even as he burns up billions every week blowing up stuff in Iran. In an administration populated by the absolutely worst cabinet in American history, Trump manages to lower the bar even further with the appointment of Michigander housing developer and certified Trump suck-up Bill Pulte as acting Director of National Intelligence, a job for which he has absolutely no qualifications. Actors Matt Damon and John Krasinski … a.k.a. Jason Bourne and Jack Ryan … would be more qualified. Adding the the Bad Cabinet Blues: the new director of Homeland Security, Markwayne Mullins, says as far as he's concerned following court orders is optional. Michigan Democrats are optimistic after making the case to the national party that Michigan should be in the first tier of 2028 presidential primaries. The state party has also rejected appeals related to vote counting in the April endorsement convention. Will the dispute extend to the official nominating convention in August? The state House has turned down a Republican-drafted constitutional amendment which would make all university boards and the State Board of Education gubernatorial appointed bodies instead of elected. Speaker Matt Hall didn't bother to talk with Democrats before putting the measure up for a vote. With a two-thirds vote needed to pass, it didn't come close to adoption, but could be revived for the November election. We are just 50 days away from the start of early voting in Michigan. The four races to watch: the 3-way Republican contest for the opportunity to battle Jocelyn Benson for Governor; the 3-way Democratic contest to battle Mike Rogers for the U.S. Senate; and multi-candidate Democratic primaries for Congressional seats based in Lansing and Macomb County. Speculation has begun over who may be in the running for President of Michigan State University in the wake of last week's departure of Kevin Guskiewicz. Will it be a relatively unknown academic, or a high-powered retired politician? There's precedent for both routes…although the highest profile possibility, Gretchen Whitmer, has already announced she is not interested in the gig. Republicans in Congress are starting to push back on Trump outrages – the House passing a measure to stop Trump's Middle East war, Senators stripping the one-billion-dollar subsidy for his ballroom from the DHS budget, and both chambers primed to outlaw efforts to revive the $1.8-billion slush fund for rewarding January 6 rioters and other Trump fans. It's interesting that congressional Republicans only started to show signs of life after candidate filing deadlines. Michigan Congressman Tom Barrett, who no longer faces the possibility of a primary challenge, was one of four Republicans voting this week to end the Iran War.  The political threat to non-compliant Republicans for pushing back against Great Leader comes as doubts about Trump's mental and physical health grow. His third physical examination since taking office coupled with an incomplete post-exam report on what the doctors learned, his reduced work schedule, the cankles and bruising – have increased the speculation. It sure looks like both his political and mental powers are in decline. This week's best political giggle: an AI doctored photo of Senate candidate Mike Rogers, turning his relatively fit 63-year-old body into a modern-day Charles Atlas. What the heck – it's easier than hours in the gym, or even going on Ozempic. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Introducing our new podcast! Summer doesn't “start” on a date for pool pros, it starts the moment the water warms and your easy week turns into a sprint. Terry Arco from HASA joins me to unpack what really changes when pools transition from spring to summer, and why the industry can feel like feast or famine depending on weather, bather load, and how prepared you are before the rush hits.We get specific about summer pool care: how rising water temperature shifts LSI, why calcium becomes more likely to precipitate and form scale, and why algae goes from dormant spores to rapid growth. That chemistry shift is exactly why chlorine demand climbs so fast, and why a “coasting” route can suddenly require tighter testing, faster adjustments, and fewer missed visits. We also talk practical prevention: proactive shock treatments while pools are quieter, checking cyanuric acid (CYA) early, and getting ahead of phosphates, borates, and total dissolved solids (TDS) so you're not stacking fixes later. Then we zoom out to the real-world pressures pool service professionals face, including budgeting for 2x to 3x chemical use and navigating rising costs tied to fuel, transport, and labor. We also cover drought restrictions that can limit draining, which makes early-season drain and dilute decisions even more important. Finally, we get into pool tech safety: hydration that actually works (electrolytes, not just water), cooling strategies, and how to avoid the fatigue that can lead to dangerous mistakes on deck.If you want a smoother, safer, more profitable summer, hit play, then subscribe, share this with a pool pro friend, and leave a review with your best preseason checklist tip.We talk with Terry Arco from HASA about the spring to summer shift that makes pools change fast and forces pool pros to move from cruising to full speed. We break down what warm water does to balance, algae risk, and your workload, plus how to protect your body when heat becomes the biggest hazard on the route.  • seasonal weather swings that disrupt the old summer calendar  • warmer water driving LSI changes and increasing scale potential  • algae waking up as temperatures rise and chlorine demand spiking  • proactive shock treatments before heavy pool use starts  • managing CYA early and avoiding mid-summer drain surprises  • checking phosphates, borates, and TDS to reduce troubleshooting later  • budgeting for higher chemical spend and ongoing price increases  • drought restrictions affecting draining and dilution strategies  • hydration with electrolytes and practical heat-safety routines  Join the pool guy coaching program. One cheap tool upgrade can save you the most expensive thing on your route: time. We get practical about the small pool service choices that prevent “can you come back today?” calls, starting with something many homeowners overlook a usable telescopic pole and a real leaf rake. When customers can skim the surface, pull debris off the bottom, and clean up before a party, your weekly service holds better and your schedule stays intact. From there, we dig into one of the most common pieces of pool equipment in the field: the Intermatic mechanical timer. We talk through what to listen for, what to look for, and why the tiny on and off trippers cause so many headaches when they bend, loosen, or drift out of position. If you service pools with variable speed pumps, we also cover a critical setup detail: when a VS pump is still wired through an old timer box, leaving trippers installed can shut the entire system down without warning. We also hit a few “working tech” favorites that make pool maintenance faster and cleaner: syncing booster pump timers for Polaris style cleaners so they only run while the main pump is on, using RV grade silicone spray on filter tank O-rings to avoid mess and extend O-ring life, and improving visibility with polarized sunglasses. Then we share a simple trick some pool pros swear by a light spray of diluted dish soap on the water surface to cut glare and make debris easier to manage during inspection and cleaning. • upgrading customers to a real leaf rake and a solid pole to reduce midweek mess and avoid callbacks• checking Intermatic timers for ticking, gear movement, and properly set on and off trippers• keeping Intermatic power constant for standalone variable speed pumps by removing trippers• setting Polaris or pressure cleaner booster timers only within the main pump run time• switching from messy lube to RV grade silicone spray to extend filter tank O-ring life• using polarized sunglasses to see through glare and catch algae sooner• spraying diluted dish soap on the surface to cut glare and pull debris to the sidesSend us Fan MailSupport the Pool Guy Podcast Show Sponsors! Send us Fan MailOn this episode of the Talking Pools Podcast, Andrea takes a deep dive into one of the most important — and often overlooked — topics in the swimming pool industry: safety. With summer approaching and pool usage increasing across the country, Andrea discusses the real-world responsibility pool professionals carry when it comes to preventing drownings, suction entrapment incidents, and avoidable tragedies. The episode opens with two heartbreaking Florida drowning stories involving young children — one at a pool party and another at an Airbnb rental property — sparking a broader conversation about accountability, supervision, and the role safety barriers play in aquatic environments. Andrea breaks down the five types of suction entrapment hazards including: Hair entrapment  Limb entrapment  Body entrapment  Mechanical entrapment  Evisceration/disembowelment She explains how these incidents occur, why they remain a serious risk even in modern pools, and why educating homeowners and clients about suction safety is critical. The discussion also explores how damaged or missing drain covers, improper flow rates, aging plastics, and poor maintenance practices can create dangerous conditions. The episode includes a detailed explanation of the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool & Spa Safety Act (VGBA), including: Why VGBA compliance is about the entire hydraulic system — not just drain covers  The role of dual drains and unblockable drains  Safety Vacuum Release Systems (SVRS)  Maximum flow ratings  Drain cover life expectancy  Pump sizing considerations  Commercial inspection requirements Andrea also shares the tragic stories behind the legislation, including the deaths of Virginia Graeme Baker and Abigail Taylor, and how those incidents changed federal pool safety standards forever. Other topics include: Why drowning deaths are increasing in the United States  The importance of swimming lessons and active supervision  Water watcher programs  Airbnb and short-term rental pool safety concerns  Why cloudy water should never be ignored  Why pool pros should document damaged safety equipment immediately  Common dangerous pool games and behaviors that should be discouraged  Long hair safety around suction outlets  Why “touch the drain” games are a terrible idea  The importance of keeping gates and barriers closed Andrea also provides listeners with an extensive list of water safety organizations and educational resources including:Pool SafelyNational Drowning Prevention AllianceAbby's HopePHTA Step Into SwimEvery Child A SwimmerCDC Healthy SwimmingThis episode serves as both a refresher and a reminder that pool safety is not a checklist — it's a culture. Whether you service residential pools, commercial facilities, vacation rentals, or aquatic centers, this conversation reinforces why education, awareness, and proactive prevention matter.Follow the Talking Pools Podcast on all major streaming platforms and join the conversation on social media. A customer tells you “no” on a repair you know matters. Now what? We dig into the uncomfortable but real part of running a pool service business: handling resistant customers who don't want to fix equipment, don't want to spend money, or don't understand the risk you're trying to prevent. I walk through how I think about customer service in a safety-driven trade, and why the phrase “the customer is always right” can be dangerously incomplete when you're dealing with pressurized systems, electricity, and chemicals. We start with a scenario that every pool pro eventually faces: a cracked pool filter. What looks like a small crack can become a serious hazard under pressure, and I share a simple analogy that helps homeowners finally grasp the stakes. We also talk about the practical side of repairs, including why swapping only the top or bottom of a filter can be a bad bet, and why sometimes the only responsible recommendation is a full replacement. Not every customer refusal requires you to walk away, so we contrast safety-critical issues with more flexible ones, like a dead salt cell on a saltwater chlorine generator. If the customer won't replace it, we cover how to convert to a chlorine pool, what to watch for with salt levels and total dissolved solids, and how setting expectations up front can prevent surprises later. Then we zoom out to route management: the one-for-one rule, how to gracefully drop a difficult account, and why trees, debris, and ancient equipment can quietly destroy your schedule. If you want clearer boundaries, better client conversations, and a stronger pool service route, hit play. Subscribe, share this with a pool pro who needs it, and leave a review with your toughest customer pushback story.• why “the customer is always right” breaks down in pool service, plumbing, and electrical work• how to explain a cracked pool filter as a serious safety hazard• why replacing only the filter top or bottom often makes little sense• when customer refusal forces you to discontinue service• how to handle a dead salt cell by converting to a chlorine pool• how to set expectations when selling a saltwater system, including salt cell lifespan and replacement cost• using the one-for-one rule to drop unworkable accounts• how untrimmed trees can make weekly maintenance unrealistic• when old pumps and filters turn a pool into a time sink Send us Fan MailSupport the Pool Guy Podcast Show Sponsors! Pool Pros text questions herehosts Steve Sherwood and Pat Rignyan from the California Pool Association take a deep dive into one of the busiest and most overlooked risk seasons in the pool industry: commercial and student housing pools. As pool professionals across the country juggle openings, CPO classes, hotels, HOAs, and large commercial accounts, Steve raises an important question many service companies never stop to ask until it's too late — how much additional liability comes with servicing high-traffic student housing and HOA pools? Pat explains that while most insurance policies don't specifically exclude commercial pools, student housing environments bring a completely different level of exposure due to heavy bather loads, parties, glass breakage, and general “shenanigans.” The conversation explores the importance of umbrella policies, understanding indemnification clauses in HOA contracts, and why pool pros should carefully review agreements before signing. The guys discuss how some HOA contracts place all responsibility on the service company regardless of fault, and why mutual indemnification language matters more than most pool operators realize. Steve also shares real-world frustrations from dealing with hotels and constantly changing management teams, highlighting how turnover, delayed approvals, and lack of communication can create operational nightmares for service companies. The episode ultimately becomes a larger conversation about trusting your gut, setting boundaries with difficult clients, pricing appropriately for high-risk work, and learning when to walk away from accounts that create more headaches than profit. For pool professionals servicing HOAs, hotels, apartment complexes, or student housing, this episode offers valuable insight into protecting both your business and your sanity.  Support the showThank you so much for listening! Interview with Anne Richmond Boston of Swimming Pool Q's. Anne was born in Louisville, Kentucky. She was a member of the church choir, took violin and ballet lessons all through elementary school. Her father was transferred to Winter Haven, Florida, for one year (where violin and ballet stopped) and then moved the family to Atlanta, Georgia. She was accepted into the high school chorus and was chosen to sing in a special chorus performing Leonard Bernstein's “Chichester Psalms.” Vocal harmonies were something she came to naturally. Perfoming “Going to the Chapel” with a band in the high school talent show was her first experience of being onstage behind a mic. She really dug it. It was about this time that the music of Janis Joplin, Grace Slick, Sandy Denny, Linda Ronstadt, Tammy Wynette, Dolly Parton, Melba Montgomery, Aretha Franklin, Judy Collins, and The Supremes took up residence in her being. She became friends with local Atlanta phenoms Thermos Greenwood (original rock band) and was invited along with a chorus of people to sing on the song “Chocolate City” for their album Pinhead Teddy. Anne was invited to become a member of the newly formed band The Swimming Pool Q's in 1978 and sang on their recordings The Deep End, The Swimming Pool Q's, and Blue Tomorrow. They continue to perform today. As a graphic designer, Anne created much of the early Swimming Pool Q's promotional material, supervised photo sessions, and designed single and album cover packaging. Leaving the Q's in 1987, Anne and her then-husband recorded The Big House of Time which was released on DB Records in 1990. It contained many originals and several cover songs, including “When You Dance” by Neil Young and “Darling Be Home Soon” by John Sebastian. T he follow up was I Should Be Happy. Anne's has had the pleasure of singing either live with, or on recordings by:  Drive-By Truckers, Widespread Panic, Thermos Greenwood, Terry Adams (NRBQ), The Brains, Johnny Jenkins, Marti Jones, Syd Straw, Laurie Sargent, Julie Adams, Kelly Hogan

Anne Richmond Boston in conversation with David Eastaugh  https://annerichmondboston.bandcamp.com/album/i-should-be-happy Back in the late 70s Anne Richmond Boston was a part of a then up-and-coming, young new-wave band called The Swimming Pool Q's—a band that would find a spiritual home alongside contemporaries like fellow Georgians The B-52s and R.E.M. In 2026 Boston is still (bar a few years when she had moved on from the band) playing shows as a member of the band. Indeed The Swimming Pool Q's have some shows coming up this May, information for which you can get here from their website. But there's another story to be told here. The story of how Boston set out to record the follow up to her debut solo record The Big House Of Time, only for that album (I Should Be Happy) to remain unfinished and unreleased for more than 30 years on from its original recording sessions.

Learn how to open it safely, diagnose the clogged check valve elbow with the “little BB,” and stop hidden leaks by replacing brittle black tubing before it drains a pool dry. If you've ever fought a stuck lid, we explain why trichlor swells o-rings and how a fresh gasket turns a two-man wrestle into a one-minute job.High PSI and poor prime can stall an entire route, so we share the quick backwash that drops pressure in 25 to 30 seconds and brings the system back to life. When your backwash runs oddly clear, we show you the toggle trick that shakes compacted DE loose. Then we tackle the age-old question of how much DE to add back, cutting through wet versus dry confusion with practical recharge amounts that protect grid life and maintain strong flow without overloading the filter. Finally, we turn service into strategy with a cleaner plan that works. Drop in bulletproof demo cleaners like the Hayward Aquanaut or Polaris Max, set variable-speed pump RPMs correctly, and let spotless water sell itself. For budget holdouts, deploy refurbished spares—Navigators, Aquanauts, MX6s and MX8s—to prove the value over time. You'll cut manual vacuuming, keep pools cleaner all week, and win more satisfied clients with less effort. "I Should Be Happy" Singer/keyboardist Anne Richmond Boston showed up on the musical timeline in the late '70s when she joined the Atlanta indie rock outfit The Swimming Pool Q's. Before the goldrush of bands like R.E.M., Soul Asylum, O Positive, Big Dipper and Poi Dog Pondering signing to major labels, The Swimming Pool Q's kind of led the way, inking deals in the mid-'80s with A&M and Capitol Records. They put out five marvelous albums, including Blue Tomorrow and The Deep End, toured with Devo and The Police and garnered a reputation for being a spot-on live act, their brand of idiosyncratic pop filled with jittery rhythms, sterling sax fills, jangling guitars and sonorous vocals. Richmond Boston left the band in 1989 but roared right back with her 1990 debut solo album Big House Of Time. Filled with soaring originals like Dreaming and covers of numbers by Neil Young, John Hiatt and The Lovin' Spoonful, Big House Of Time made a huge splash at college radio. And then? Well, Richmond Boston designed album covers, worked in graphic arts, sang with The Drive By Truckers and Widespread Panic and rejoined the Q's. And that was that. But what about the rumored follow-up to Big House Of Time? Well, it was recorded and sitting on a shelf in a closet in Richmond Boston's house. Titled I Should Be Happy, her sophomore album was worth the wait. A riveting collection that's filled with meditative and melodic numbers, I Should Be Happy is contemplative and moving and finds Richmond Boston tackling the big questions with peerless harmonic grace.  www.annerichmondboston.bandcamp.com www.bombshellradio.com www.stereoembersmagazine.com www.alexgreenbooks.com Threads + BLUESKY + IG: @emberspodcast editor@stereoembersthepodcast.com

Tired of chasing the “perfect” pool water tester that does it all? We unpack the trade-offs behind the most trusted tools on a pro's truck and show how to build a smarter testing system that saves time, reduces cost, and delivers accurate, defensible results.First, we put the Lamotte SpinTouch under the microscope. It's blazing fast and highly accurate across a wide panel of factors, making it ideal for commercial pools, startups, and tough problem jobs. We talk candidly about the price of the unit, single-use discs, and why it's better as a specialty instrument than a daily driver. Then we compare practical alternatives—photometers like PoolLab 2.0 and ColorQ—highlighting their digital readouts, exportable logs, and dependable precision when you measure correctly.Next, we move to the workhorse of most routes: Taylor reagent kits. We break down K‑2005 vs K‑2006, explain when higher chlorine ranges matter, and show how NSF-approved chemistry, low-cost refills, and quick workflows make these kits perfect for everyday pH, alkalinity, CYA, hardness, and chlorine checks. We also redeem test strips a bit: not as your core tool, but as a fast way to spot-check water and keep your day moving, especially for spas and quick visits.By the end, you'll have a clear, simple framework: use Taylor drops for daily baselines, deploy a photometer for monthly verification and recordkeeping, lean on SpinTouch for commercial compliance, startups, and problem diagnosis, and keep strips for rapid screening. This three-tool strategy balances accuracy, speed, and cost—and it strengthens client trust when you can show numbers, trends, and certifications to back your calls.• the limits of a “perfect” water tester myth• SpinTouch speed, accuracy, and cost trade-offs• best use cases for SpinTouch on startups and commercial• photometers as affordable digital accuracy with logs• Taylor reagent kits for fast, daily baseline testing• test strips for rapid screening and time savings• NSF certification and why records matter for compliance• Send a textSupport the Pool Guy Podcast Show Sponsors!
