Around this time each summer I look forward to the onslaught of fresh tomatoes—while at the same time hoping against hope that what I call “tomato troubles” don't reveal themselves and get the upper hand. I've been hearing from lots of readers and listeners in recent weeks that the new normal of weather chaos nationwide isn't helping them get to the tomato finish line successfully...and that they're worried. So with all that in mind, I made my annual frantic call with some urgent tomato questions to today's guest, Craig LeHoullier of North Carolina, the NC Tomato Man as he's known on social media, author of the classic book “Epic Tomatoes.” Craig knows more about these cherished fruits than almost anyone I've ever met, and he even shares that in Live sessions each week on his Instagram account, where you can ask your questions and get solid answers. I asked Craig how he's doing, and what we should all be doing to bolster a bountiful harvest, and also about which fruits to save next year's seed from anyhow, and other tomato questions.
I call the phenomenon tomato troubles. You know, the yellow-spotted foliage that falls off, or the plant that produces all those misshapen fruits and yes, the attack of the hornworms, too, when you wake up to a lot of missing leaves one day. Or all of the above. Oops! August is a perfect time to check in with the tomato man himself, Craig LeHoullier, author of the book “Epic Tomatoes,” and see what we can do even under such high-summer pressures to bring in that delicious harvest.
I'm pleased to welcome back to “Digging in the Dirt… Gardener, author, educator, podcaster blogger and frequent collaborator with Joe Lamp'l of the Joe Gardener TV show… Craig LeHoullier. In addition Craig wrote one of the great books on tomatoes, It's called Epic Tomatoes. Beautiful to look at and a very good resource for all of us tomato geeks.
Tomato experts Craig LeHoullier ("Epic Tomatoes") and Keith Mueller ("KC Tomato") return yet again to impart their wisdom about America's favorite fruit in Tomatomania V. They talk growing strategies and favorite varieties...including some they have developed themselves.
Sick of winter? What I find helps, besides the occasional warmish, sunny day, is thinking about tomatoes. And that's what we're going to do today with Craig LeHoullier, author of the hit 2014 book “Epic Tomatoes,” who has over the years grown some 3,000 varieties in his home garden and adds new ones to his list every year Craig, who gardens in North Carolina, is a retired chemist with a longtime passion for tomatoes. He's the co-founder of the Dwarf Tomato Project, an advisor on tomatoes to Seed Savers Exchange, and the person who in 1990 named the popular heirloom Cherokee Purple from seed that had been passed down and eventually made its way to him.

Craig LeHoullier is a tomato guru. He thinks the time of coronavirus, when people are home and wary of grocery shopping, is the perfect time to become a gardener. He does Instagram Live on Fridays from his North Carolina home —@NCTomatoMan — as he tends his garden and answers inquiries. A chemist by trade, LeHoullier treats the growing of vegetables like a science but also takes great delight and pleasure in the color and taste of his produce. He and a gardener in Australia, Patrina Nuske Small, have spent 15 years working with people from around the world to develop 123 varieties of dwarf tomatoes, which even city dwellers with just a pot of soil can raise. He’s also perfected the art of growing vegetables in bales of straw, and will soon have books on both of those initiatives. His first book, “Epic Tomatoes” — he called writing it an act of courage — is not just a practical guide to growing tomatoes but a personal life history of his favorite varieties. In this week’s podcast, at AltamontEnterprise.com/podcasts, LeHoullier urges people to follow his passion into gardening. “You’ll get healthy,” he says as you work to a soundtrack of birdsong and learn from your mistakes. This week, I’m catching up with Epic Tomatoes author Craig LeHoullier. I'm proud to call him a good friend and happy that he's a frequent guest on this podcast. But a lot has changed in the Tomato Guy’s world during the past few months, and many of you have wondered what Craig has been up to since the last podcast episode nearly one year ago. We had much to catch up on and talk about, so today we're learning a lot about what's been going on in this epic tomato growers life, especially in the last few months, as well as some new lessons learned during his busy life on the road, and at home, for his final epic growing season in his own driveway garden.
I apologize in advance for the audio quality of this episode. I was dealing with a dodgy microphone and some parts of my audio has static, but this is only here and there during the interview and its otherwise acceptable. I have it fixed, it won't continue into future episodes. In this episode I give an overview of the domesticated tomato, my feelings on the term "Heirloom", I have a talk with Patrina Nuske Small and Craig LeHoullier about Dwarf Tomatoes, and I review Craigs book Epic Tomatoes. In the Biggs-on-Figs segment, Steven chats with Sundae Horn who helps to organize the Ocracoke Fig Festival on Ocracoke Island in North Carolina. This two-day festival takes place this year on August 16th and 17th, and celebrates figs through food, history, music, and all sorts of fig stuff. How is it that Dee and Carol can go from peonies to Wallis Simpson to tomatoes and then the Chelsea chop in one episode? Well, just listen and you'll find out!Flower: Peony, a wonderful long-lived perennial flower that both Dee and Carol and millions of other gardeners grow. Peony's Envy is one site that will give you a good overview of peonies. Another source is Song Sparrow Nursery. And peonies are edible! At least the flower petals are. The petals taste lovely fresh in salads, or lightly cooked and sweetened. Carol learned this when she read Flower Chronicles by Buckner Hollingsworth, published in 1958. Shout out to our friend, Ellen Zachos, the Backyard Forager.Vegetable: Tomato - The Queens of the Garden. There are whole books written on tomatoes, like Epic Tomatoes by Craig Lehoullier, that will blow your mind with all the varieties. A Proven Winners variety Dee and Carol are both trialing this year is Tempting Tomatoes™ Goodhearted™. Dee wrote in her book, The 20-30 Something Garden Guide, about how to cage tomatoes and how to grow them. Carol wrote a chapter in her book, Homegrown and Handpicked, about tomato lessons from her dad. For more information on the tomatoes Dee is growing this year, check out her latest blog post, "Tomatoes I'm growing this summer"Dirt: The Chelsea Chop. This is the time of year to cut back late blooming perennials like asters, mums, and goldenrod to encourage more blooms and keep the plants somewhat in check. “Chelsea” refers to the big Chelsea Flower Show in London which takes place in late May. Carol calls this cutting back the Indy 500 Chop because it takes place in late May too. This year at the Chelsea Flower Show, they named Sedum takesimense ‘Atlantis', the 2019 plant of the year. I’m your host, Rachel Hultengren. In this episode, I talk with Craig LeHoullier and Patrina Nuske Small, the co-creators of the Dwarf Tomato Project, the “first all-volunteer world-wide tomato breeding project in documented gardening history”. We discuss how the project came about, the benefits and challenges of having an all-volunteer team, and the pleasant surprises of plant breeding. Patrina Nuske Small began gardening in her 50's after graduating from Flinders University in South Australia, realizing that it was time to get away from research and spend more time outside in the fresh air. Patrina is currently based in New South Wales. Dr. Craig LeHoullier followed a 25 year career in pharmaceuticals with an ongoing writing career that includes Epic Tomatoes and Growing Vegetables in Straw Bales. He maintained a parallel obsession with gardening, first with heirloom tomatoes, then with amateur breeding. Craig joined Seed Savers Exchange in 1986, and serves as an adviser to the Exchange for tomatoes. Craig is based in Raleigh, North Carolina. Rachel Hultengren: Patrina, Craig, welcome to the show! Patrina Nuske Small: Thanks, Rachel! Craig LeHoullier: Thank you very much, Rachel – it’s an absolute delight to be able to do this today. Rachel Hultengren: Craig, maybe you can start by briefly telling us about the Dwarf Tomato Project. What is the project, and what are its goals? Craig LeHoullier: The project is huge, fascinating, endlessly surprising. To put it all in a sentence, the goal of the Dwarf Tomato breeding project was to offer to the gardening community the largest possible selection of interesting, delicious tomato plants that can be grown by space-challenged gardeners, while at the same time provide a fascinating project for those wishing to become involved in to experience. And in that respect, I think we haven’t only checked all the boxes we set out to check, but we’ve checked boxes that we never thought we were going to check. Rachel Hultengren: Patrina, how did the project get started, and when did it get started? Patrina Nuske Small: In 2005, I was searching the internet for gardening information because I really needed to, like I say, get outside in the fresh air and get away from books.
I'm talking today to Craig LeHoullier, author of "Epic Tomatoes" about seed starting. We'll take you through the basics, both under lights and by a window, and both the "approved" ways that most people use and the unusual ways that Craig has adapted to growing thousands of tomatoes at his house".

I’m so excited to celebrate my TWENTIETH episode with some very special guests today. Craig LeHoullier is THE Tomato man (@nctomatoman to be exact). After a successful career as a chemist in Pharmaceuticals, Craig began a new career as being one of the leading experts on growing tomatoes and celebrating the many varieties that exist. He is an advisor for the Seed Savers Exchange and the World Tomato Society, the co-leader of the Dwarf Tomato Breeding Project, and the author of Epic Tomatoes and Growing Vegetables in Straw Bales. He is responsible for naming and popularizing many well known tomatoes, such as Cherokee Purple. He joins us today to discuss how we, as urban jungle dwellers, even in the smallest of apartments, can grow tomatoes from seed on our windowsills. After my chat with Craig, my Mom joins us to chat a little about what being Italian and growing tomatoes means to her. My Mom is the head farmer at “Failla Farm”, otherwise known as our family home’s front yard, which she transforms every summer. Like her parents, and their parents, she utilizes her space to grow as much of her own food as possible, and the whole family benefits from her produce. It feels very special to have my Mom join me on my twentieth episode, as when I started the show, not knowing whether it would take off, I would often say “worst comes to worst, me and my mom listen to a couple of great episodes”. So 20 shows later, I’m excited to finally share some of her expertise with you. In this episode we learn: - From Craig LeHoullier, author of Epic Tomatoes o Which varieties of tomatoes to choose for indoor apartment gardening o Where to buy seeds o How to start tomatoes from seed o How to germinate and transfer to pots o Best practices for growing tomatoes o His tips and tricks for your best tomatoes yet - From my Mom o What tomatoes mean to us in our Italian culture o How to choose the best pre grown plants at the big lot stores o Tips from an Italian on her experience growing tomatoes Follow Craig LeHoullier: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/craiglehoullier Twitter: https://twitter.com/nctomatoman Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nctomatoman/ https://www.craiglehoullier.com/ Buy Craig’s Books: Epic Tomatoes: https://amzn.to/2pHJSqI Growing Vegetables in Straw Bales: https://amzn.to/2DWh7L6 *Bloom and Grow Radio is an Amazon Affiliate and earns a portion of the sale of these links at no extra cost to you. I’m replaying my interview with Jill Host of Journey with Jill (http://journeywithjill.net/) because she mentioned the book Epic Tomatoes by Craig LeHouiller and he’s tomorrow’s episode so I thought it would be good to play her episode too! (http://journeywithjill.net/plantsomething/thebeginnersgardenpodcast/) Tell us a little about yourself. My name is Jill McSheehy (http://journeywithjill.net/plantsomething/thebeginnersgardenpodcast/) . I live in Arkansas. I currently am a stay at home mom of two children. My son Drew is 10 and my daughter Alissa is six. After I graduated from college I was in the workforce. I was the manager of local Ford dealership. When my daughter was 2 years old I felt like I needed to be home. When I transitioned to be a stay at home mom, I started gardening primarily just to save money on the grocery bills because we were going from 2 incomes to 1. That was my primary reason for starting a garden. Money I’ve been wondering where I fit into this. My husband’s more of the gardener. Time is always a big factor for me. I’m more of the eater in the garden. Yesterday I went to to the grocery store and I couldn’t afford to buy any produce or fruit. Then I’ve been trying to buy more organic fruits like strawberries cause Mike’s always saying there’s a nice container of pesticides, so I didn’t buy the strawberries. So money is a huge issue! And kudos for you for staying home with your daughter. So Arkansas is one of my favorite states, I’ve driven through all of the states except Louisiana and Alabama. I drove through Arkansas once and I can still remember going around each curve. (http://journeywithjill.net/plantsomething/thebeginnersgardenpodcast/) Tell me about your first gardening experience? My gardening experience is surprising to most people because I am now headlong into gardening. I did not start out that way. My mom gardened throughout my life and I didn’t want anything to do with it. She would me joke that she asked me to go pick a pepper and I would ask her what that was? I had no idea growing up! When I was 30-31 years old, a few years ago, when I decided I wanted to learn so I asked her and she could not help but roll her eyes and think how long is this gonna last? I did not have much experience at all! But I was determined! My husband wanted to grow a couple of things. So while I was working full time, he built 2 raised beds and we put some fruit and vegetables in those beds. I started to get the itch then but not in a major way because I was working 40 hours a week at the time. But I knew I was going to be a stay at home mom full time. I dove headlong into this venture. That was in the fall. I was gonna create a huge garden in one particular part of the yard. Back to Eden Garden Method (http://www.backtoedenfilm.com/organicgardening.html) At the time I was studying the Back to Eden garden method (http://www.backtoedenfilm.com/organicgardening.html) that a friend of mine told me about. I didn’t know anything else. I was covering the yard with newspapers and woodchips that fall before I started my garden. That whole winter I spent researching, reading books and blog posts and everything I could get my hands on. I compare it to college when you have all of this head knowledge but you have no life experience. So when spring came I had all this head knowledge but I had no idea what pests or what diseases I might battle what my soil would be like rookie year it started out as an experiment. The whole area where my garden was that I had put woodchips on etc was pretty much flooded! What happened was we had a very wet spring I had not paid attention to that area before. And realized this was not gonna work. In the middle of spring we up and created a whole new garden where it was a little elevated. Support this podcast

Many years ago, Craig fell in love with growing tomatoes, and then, specifically, heirloom tomatoes, and he eventually put everything he learned about tomato history, and the art and science of growing beautiful tomatoes, down on paper. I roared through the book. And then, impressed with what I read, I asked Craig to come on the show to talk about his passion. And, it is a passion. Craig figures he has five thousand tomato varieties in his collection, and that he's personally grown out more than 2000 of them. This episode: part one of our conversation, which focuses on heirloom history, and practical considerations for starting tomatoes in the nursery and pruning them in the field. Part two, which includes a best-of varietal list for commercial growers, comes out next week.
