In 2023, Maggie Taylor wrote an article for Growing for Market Magazine about several projects she had started as part of a grant program incorporating agroforestry into Delight Flower Farm in Illinois. Since many of the projects were on a three-year timeline, we thought this would be a great time to check in and see how they turned out! The projects included alley cropping, windbreak renovation, wildlife structures, cover cropping and adding an additional high tunnel through the NRCS EQUIP program. You can read her original article in the link above or show notes below. Then, hear what Maggie wishes she knew before starting her alley cropping project, how having perennials mixed in with annuals affects both, and why it's a good idea to give yourself more time than you think you need for USDA grant projects. We also cover intercropping ideas so you can make some revenue off your perennial beds before they are mature, and talk about how having multiple programs on your NRCS application can improve the chances of getting your grant approved. Stephanie Thaler has lived many lives in one. She survived thyroid cancer at 18, gained 60 pounds during radiation treatment while being isolated in a hospital with zero human contact, and came out the other side with a calling — massage therapy. What followed was 28 years of relentless learning, Guinness World Record-breaking fitness (715 burpees in 60 minutes), becoming the massage therapist for the Minnesota Vikings and the 2022 US Women's Olympic Hockey Team, founding the first barefoot massage school in Minnesota, and becoming the highest-paid manual therapist in her state through a technique called adhesion release methods — a specialized approach to releasing nerve entrapments that only 50 practitioners worldwide are certified in. In this conversation with Freddie, Stephanie breaks down what adhesions actually are, why nerve entrapment goes undetected on MRIs and gets dismissed by conventional medicine, how she's getting results in four to six sessions for people who have been in chronic pain for years, and what the difference is between radial and focused shockwave therapy when treating specific nerve pathways. The second half of this episode goes somewhere deeply personal. Stephanie shares that her father died by suicide on Thanksgiving when she was five years old — and that she spent the next 38 years living in a state of chronic fight or flight, cycling through every SSRI, CBT protocol, and alternative therapy available, never finding lasting relief. Until ketamine. In two weeks of six IV sessions, she healed more trauma than 18 years of cognitive behavioral therapy ever touched. Her father came to her in session. God held her. And she came out glowing. She now does at-home ketamine therapy three to five days a week and credits it with putting her depression into remission and fueling the most successful chapter of her career. This is an honest, science-grounded, spiritually rich conversation about healing the body and the nervous system from the inside out — and what becomes possible when you finally feel safe. Chip and Susan Planck ran Wheatland Farms growing vegetables in Virginia for 37 years, and in this interview, we talk with them about what worked, what didn't and what changed in market farming over almost four decades. We talk about founding farmers markets, and then how they pulled off 10-15 farmers markets every week during the season. That involved employing hundreds of people over the years, and we talk about why it was important to hire people and not have them work as apprentices or interns. We also talk about narrowing down your crop list, the group farmland purchase that started the farm, and how they now live in a “hamlet” on their farm. We discuss advice for new farmers, how they rewarded workers who returned, and the business logic they used to build their farm steadily over the years. A lot of this is in Chip's new book, Sky Blue Trades: Essays and epiphanies from thirty-seven years of vegetable farming. In this episode of the Rox Lyfe podcast I'm joined by Hidde Weersma, one of the favourites heading into the 2026 HYROX World Championships in Stockholm after a huge season that included a world record performance in London. We get into Hidde's training approach, the running sessions that helped take his performance to another level, and how he developed one of the best burpee broad jump stations in the sport. He also explains why he believes the standard in the Elite 15 has improved so dramatically in recent seasons, and why athletes are now training and racing very differently compared to just a few years ago. It's an honest and detailed conversation packed with training insight, race strategy, and a look into how one of the world's best HYROX athletes approaches the sport.
“Hyloom” tomato varieties have become popular with growers for the combination of heirloom flavor and looks, and grower-friendly traits like improved vigor and disease resistance. In this interview we talk with Greg Vogel, Assistant Professor of Plant Breeding and Genetics at Cornell University, who is working on breeding hyloom tomato varieties. If you're a tomato nerd you're in luck because we go deep on them in this interview. We talk about what makes an heirloom, what makes a hyloom and the traditional breeding practices that allow any farmer to try their hand at making one. We also talk about how they try to breed new hyloom varieties strategically so they outperform their parents. In the process we cover the genetic basis of a lot of things you might have noticed in the field, like why long-fruited tomatoes tend to get more blossom end rot, why heirlooms tend to have more defects like zippering and catfacing, why there tend to be more of those defects at the beginning and end of the season, and lots of other tomato nerdery! On this week's podcast we talk with Drew Cramer of Ghost House Farm in Michigan about how he more than doubled his greenhouse tomato yields through good management and automation. Automation makes the difference between just controlling the temperature in a greenhouse and controlling the climate. And controlling the climate is what creates a growth-promoting, disease-discouraging greenhouse environment. In this interview we get nerdy to talk about the management practices Drew used and the ways he managed the climate for increasing yields and decreasing disease over time. We talk about how he used pulse irrigation and humidity control together to reduce diseases and seconds. We also discuss the small-scale biomethane digester they're using to turn their greenhouse prunings into fuel. We also focus on how much cucumber grafting has increased their yields, what they're grafting cucumbers to, and so much more in this wide-ranging interview filled with greenhouse tips. Nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium get a lot of attention, but there are other nutrients that are just as important for soil and plant health. In this week's interview, we talk with Gregg Forster of Wisconsin Mineral Solutions about some of those other nutrients, including the role of calcium as the “truck” that helps move other nutrients in the plant, the role of boron as the “wheels” on the truck, and the role calcium plays in improving soil texture. But like most things in life there can be too much of a good thing, so we also talk about how much calcium is too much. We also talk about why cation nutrients are expressed in ratios instead of parts per million, what those ratios should be and recommended PPM for other micronutrients. We also discuss why iron should be in a ratio of 2.5 times more than manganese, the many reasons soil should be slightly acidic, and lots more in this week's Growing for Market Podcast interview. If you're the leader who pushes harder when the team feels heavy, doubles intensity when the metrics stall, and confuses urgency for transformation — there's a drill sergeant running your insides. Here's why white-knuckling doesn't actually drive change, and what does.
Garrett Corwin started Piedmont Microgreens out of his garage in Durham, North Carolina, and after six years he's scaled the business to 350-400 trays a week. In addition to the farmers market, Piedmont sells to more than 50 restaurants, grocery stores and wholesalers, including FreshPoint and Sysco with just a two-person team. As the business expanded, Garrett realized the limitations of spreadsheets for crop planning, so he enlisted the help of his brother Spencer to help build a better way to keep track of their crops and customers. Spencer left a software engineering role at Meta to help build Microgreen Manager, and now it's how they plan their crops and is available to other farmers. In this interview we discuss how Garrett hacked his house to provide a low-cost platform for the business, how to get in with wholesalers, and what equipment he would buy if he were starting over. We talk about the functions of Microgreen Manager that make it more robust than spreadsheets, how Piedmont Microgreens has kept its workforce the same size even as they scaled production, how they grow everything to order and lots more in this week's Growing for Market Podcast interview! One trend we've noticed is the growing number of flower farming cooperatives. We think it might be part of local growers banding together to increase market power as the American flower market bounces back from decimation due to the Andean Trade Preference Act, but don't take it from us. This week we talk with Carrie Read, the General Manager of the Seattle Growers Market (recently rebranded from the Seattle Wholesale Growers Market), which is celebrating 15 years in 2026. We talk with Carrie about how the coop is structured, grower fees, and the digital sales platform they use to coordinate it all. We also discuss pricing, and how the coop navigates being competitive vs getting the best price possible for their blooms. Carrie also tells us how they're navigating delivery and pickup rates in an era of tariffs and fuel surcharges, how they add new growers while preserving the equity of established growers, and what they've learned as the coop reaches the 15-year mark. When Anna Wallngford got fired (twice) by DOGE from her job doing entomological research for the federal government, she formed New Hampshire Community Supported Research to keep the work she was doing on behalf of farmers going. If you can do community supported agriculture why not community supported research, right? Hear about the research she was doing for the government, what it was like to get one of the infamous “fork in the road” emails, and her plans for NHCSR. Along with the projects she's got lined up for 2026, we talk about how research is funded, since this affects what research gets done and on whose behalf. Anna gives us lots of insights on biological control, pheromone technology and other integrated pest management topics. And she's looking for input from farmers to help decide which projects get done by NHCSR, so we talk about the prospective projects for 2026, and you can weigh in if one would be helpful for your farm! HEALTH NERDS. In this week's interview we hear from Colleen McCoole Payne about how she and more than 20 other growers built the Kansas City Flower Farmer Wholesale Market to help them sell more to florists by working together. In 2023 Colleen started working with a few growers to create a wholesale market similar to a farmers market where they did not need to create an LLC and each grower would invoice the buyers that bought from them. Fast forward three years and now the market just moved into its own permanent space after using temporary and pop-up locations for the first three seasons. Though the focus is on the market, we couldn't resist talking about how Colleen overwinters dahlias in the field, dahlia harvest stage for maximum vase life, and raising brix for pest control. Back on the market side of things, we discuss how they structure the market, the digital sales platform they use and what fees they charge. One of the most innovative parts of the market is how they plan to enable 24-hour sales for florists. We believe cooperatives and collectives like this one are part of a growing trend that will allow local flower growers to access bigger markets by banding together, so listen to this interview for all the details of how they set up the market! Jakub Kosmowski left a career in marketing to start the vegetable CSA farm Farma Wola in Poland. In this interview, he tells us how he adapted the marketing principles he used with Fortune 500 companies to develop a market for and sell CSA shares for his farm. Jakub tells us how any type of farm can use the four Ps of marketing- “product, place, price and promotion” to think about the big picture before putting effort into marketing. Then we compare the merits of the different marketing channels- email vs social media vs paid advertising- to decide which channels make sense for your farm and how to repurpose the same content across multiple channels. In the process we talk about how to avoid some of the mistakes that even big companies make with things like Super Bowl ads, and how to set realistic objectives for marketing campaigns. He has suggestions for how to fix campaigns that are getting good reach but not generating sales. Jakub tells us how he uses affiliate marketing with local businesses to drive CSA signups. We also discuss how and why it's important to think like your customer, and lots of other tips that will help you raise your marketing game this season! Most point of sale (POS) systems were designed for businesses like restaurants and retail, and aren't perfect fits for farm businesses. In this episode, Lindsey Lusher Shute tells us how she has been working on customizing POS systems for farmers, and how she has been beta testing the system in her own farm's store. Innovations include being fully customizable to support a range of farms, being able to process SNAP/EBT, customer and sales tracking, and integration with scanner, printer and cash register. We also hear how she re-established her own farm's store after having been used in the past by previous owners of the farm. Lindsey tells us how a combination of signage, location and expanding their offerings over the years turned their farm store from a CSA pickup location into an important revenue driver for Hearty Roots Farm. In today's episode, we explore the range of people who whose job is to help farmers, and how to get the most out of these relationships. We refer to these people as a group as technical assistance, or “TA” providers, and it can include extension agents, people at nonprofit or NGOs, professors, etc. And our guest today is one of those people- Sarah Geurkink is the Organic Production Specialist for the Organic Association of Kentucky [OAK]. Sarah draws on her own farming background and experience working with farmers at OAK to help growers understand how to find TA providers and what kind of assistance they can provide for farm projects. Most flower and vegetable growers can add herbs to their existing crop plans without changing what they're already doing- and dried herbs can complement the fresh crops by providing a year-round income stream. On this week's podcast we talk with Emily Springer of Meeting House Farm and Collaborative in Maine about how she grows herbs on the farm and sells them through the collaborative. Emily started the collaborative so growers can use the online sales platform to connect with buyers nationwide and ship herbs from their own farms. She tells us how over 80% of the herbs sold in the United States are imported, and the $12 billion dollar market is expected to double over the next decade. We discuss which herbs are in demand, how to grow and dry them, how to join the collaborative, and the profitability of growing herbs. Though many overseas producers have a lower cost of production, domestic growers can compete on quality and transparency in the herb market. The conversation also covers harvesting, processing, pest management, and how much of the labor associated with drying and processing herbs can be done in the offseason when the farm is less busy. Everyone loves sweet corn, but can you make money on it? This pod episode sets out to answer the age-old question, and shine light on the best practices that will give growers the best chance of being profitable with this summer favorite. We also discuss whether sweet corn can function as a “loss leader,” i.e. come for the sweet corn, stay for the tomatoes and salad mix theory that might justify growing it at a loss to get customers in the door (or the farmers market stand, as the case may be). This podcast episode is a complement to Dan's article in the January Growing for Market Magazine, “Sweet corn without chemicals: can the early bird beat the (ear)worm?” But we didn't want Dan to have to repeat everything he said in the article, so the article is linked below in the show notes. What does the future of market farming look like in the era of digital sales? Our guests this week, Amelia Ihlo of Rooted Farmers and Jill Shea of the Connecticut Flower Collective had the bright idea to take the 35th anniversary of Growing for Market Magazine as an opportunity to step back and look at the last 35 years of market farming, and think about what is going to shape the next 35 years. As we discuss, the number of farms is going down every day, lots of food is wasted before it even makes it off the farm, and costs are up on pretty much everything. On the other hand, the widespread adoption of digital sales during the COVID-19 Pandemic helped many farms find new markets. In this interview we explore how online sales are continuing to evolve for farmers, and some best practices for increasing sales and reducing friction with customers. Listen and learn how you can make the most of digital sales for your own farm! Though Angie Machado is now an email expert, she got her start in the flower world, so she understands the unique needs of farm businesses. In this episode she shares her journey from working with flowers to specializing in email marketing. This interview covers how to build an effective email list, create engaging content, balance sales and value in emails, and avoid common pitfalls. Angie also highlights the significance of personalization and segmentation in email marketing, providing practical tips for farmers to enhance their email marketing efforts. We also discuss how much to sell via email, what to email your audience about in the non-sales emails, how to get people to open your emails, why bots sign up for your email newsletter, and everything else you need to know to up your email game. So, whether you send emails to CSA members, farmers market customers, or prospective shoppers, listen to this episode to learn how to make those emails better. Michael Wardian breaks down what discipline really looks like. He talks through the daily work that carried him 3332 miles across the country, the failed record attempts he turned into wins, and the mindset that comes from long hours of suffering. He shows why simple reps like 100 burpees build accountability and why purpose matters more than motivation. This episode is a reminder that when you choose hard over comfort and keep moving forward, you build real mental toughness. THREE KEY LEARNINGS Daily discipline builds mental toughness faster than motivation. Purpose keeps you locked in when everything hurts. Do hard things every day. Topics • When podiums should and should not change after the fact • Athlete responsibility to protest versus sport responsibility to enforce standards • Perception of favoritism toward "beloved elites" • Janelle's frustration with self-policing reps after the fact • Brooklyn's tank clip and the problem with "imaginary lines" in judging • Why DEKA needs a clearer tank rule: wheels to the tape versus bolts • Burpees, lunges, and movements that break judges • Cheryl's line: "the best way to kill a good idea is to underfund it" • Men's team mile penalty and why communication matters • Hunter's season debut in Melbourne • Cole Learn hype and the loaded women's field • Anaheim weekend plans Summary Dave joins the show after winning the DEKA Strong Ruck 45 plus world championship and the group breaks down everything that happened at DEKA Worlds. The crew debates when podiums should ever change after the fact, how much responsibility belongs to athletes versus the sport, and whether judging inconsistency is pushing people out of the system. Janelle explains why she should not have to review her own reps on video, walks through the Brooklyn tank clip, and makes the case that the current rules are nearly impossible to enforce in real time. They also hit the men's team mile penalty, the updated mile layout, and whether DEKA has underfunded its own growth. The show wraps with a short HYROX Melbourne preview and plans for Anaheim. Teaching regulation to my children feels incredibly difficult at times. It challenges me, stretches my patience and requires more attention than I knew I had to give. AND, seeing them take deep breaths when they feel upset, guide their brother to breathe and start doing 20 burpees without me even asking- IS WELL WORTH IT. Today I'm sharing what has worked exceptionally well in my home with high energy big feeling boys, which is BURPEES. I'm breaking down why I diligently emphasize regulation, what we do and how you can incorporate a plan like this, too. Side note: Christmas is coming quick.
