Exodus 4:18-31 English Standard Version Moses Returns to Egypt 18 Moses went back to Jethro his father-in-law and said to him, “Please let me go back to my brothers in Egypt to see whether they are still alive.” And Jethro said to Moses, “Go in peace.” 19 And the Lord said to Moses in Midian, “Go back to Egypt, for all the men who were seeking your life are dead.” 20 So Moses took his wife and his sons and had them ride on a donkey, and went back to the land of Egypt. And Moses took the staff of God in his hand. 21 And the Lord said to Moses, “When you go back to Egypt, see that you do before Pharaoh all the miracles that I have put in your power. But I will harden his heart, so that he will not let the people go. 22 Then you shall say to Pharaoh, ‘Thus says the Lord, Israel is my firstborn son, 23 and I say to you, “Let my son go that he may serve me.” If you refuse to let him go, behold, I will kill your firstborn son.'” 24 At a lodging place on the way the Lord met him and sought to put him to death. 25 Then Zipporah took a flint and cut off her son's foreskin and touched Moses'[a] feet with it and said, “Surely you are a bridegroom of blood to me!” 26 So he let him alone. It was then that she said, “A bridegroom of blood,” because of the circumcision. 27 The Lord said to Aaron, “Go into the wilderness to meet Moses.” So he went and met him at the mountain of God and kissed him. 28 And Moses told Aaron all the words of the Lord with which he had sent him to speak, and all the signs that he had commanded him to do. 29 Then Moses and Aaron went and gathered together all the elders of the people of Israel. 30 Aaron spoke all the words that the Lord had spoken to Moses and did the signs in the sight of the people. 31 And the people believed; and when they heard that the Lord had visited the people of Israel and that he had seen their affliction, they bowed their heads and worshiped. But to each one of us grace has been given as Christ apportioned it. … So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. (Ephesians 4:7,11-13) This is my last Wilderness Wanderings devotional for a while. As many of you know I'll be off on Sabbatical through this summer reading up on technology's impact on the church and our faith life. I'll also be reading up on mentoring, though. The reason, is that mentoring seems more and more to be an important part of ministering here at Immanuel. Equipping God's people for works of service has always been part of the role of us pastors and teachers. But actually, it's also the work of the whole church: Paul says that Christ has given gifts to each one of us for this building up to maturity as a body. There was an initiative back a while ago before my time in this church where a mentoring ministry was to start up, I think just amongst men as a men's ministry. Be that as it may, as the story goes, a bunch of people signed up to be mentored. Great news! However, the ministry was short-lived, because hardly anyone signed up to be a mentor. Many recognized their need to grow up to maturity in Christ, but few felt that they had any grace or maturity worth offering to someone else. But that's not true. Grace has been given to each of us. And it has not been without effect in this church. Whether you realize it or not: you have been a mentoring church. A place where leadership is cultivated, opportunities are given, and a free and easy collegiality lives that allows failures and learnings to be navigated. This is a church where people do grow up to maturity in Christ. It's also a place that continually cranks out leaders. Not all the mature in Christ become leaders in the formal sense. And, not all of those leaders who've grown up and been shaped here remain in the church. But more and more often: the two are intersecting and culminating in the calling of more of God's people from Immanuel to be pastors and teachers. I've said it before, but it's worth saying again: we signed off on FOUR seminary applications in this last year and a half (that is, during the pandemic), and many more young people in our church are contemplating various avenues of ministry right now: I count at least SEVEN. I think that's really awesome to see the work and gifts of God coming to fruition in real time in our church through some of our members. It's not the only place to see God at work, but it's a neat one. While so many are fretting over the future of the church: God is already off doing a new thing in our midst, calling a whole crop of new pastors out of Immanuel to help lead his church grow to maturity. So, apparently God isn't too worried about the future if he's calling leaders into it. And that's why: I think it's time for me, in this Sabbatical, to pay attention and get equipped myself so that I can come back and rejoin whatever cool thing God is up to here with hopefully some more maturity and intentionality on the other side! And, in the mean time: Jennifer Heidinga, one of our recent seminarians, will be taking my place in offering these daily devotions with Pastor Michael over the summer. So, encourage her, and be encouraged by her as you witness for yourselves God at work in our church.

In this podcast I talk about the Five Fold Hip-Hop Ministry and the purpose of it in the music ministry, industry, and culture! Let's SUM them all up! "And David [the Apostle] spake to the chief of the Levites to APPOINTED [Heb: 'confirm, establish, appoint, ORDAIN'] their brethren to be the singers with instruments of music, psalteries and harps and cymbals, sounding, by lifting up the voice with joy. So the Levites APPOINTED Heman [the pastor] ... Asaph [the Evangelist] ... Ethan [Jeduthun the Prophet] ... So the singers, Heman [the pastor], Asaph [the Evangelist], and Ethan [Jeduthun the Prophet], were APPOINTED to sound with cymbals of brass; and Chenaniah [the Teacher], chief of the Levites, was for song: he [Chenaniah the Teacher] INSTRUCTED about the song, BECAUSE HE WAS SKILLFUL." (1 Chron 15:16-17, 19, 22). There it is! The Five Fold Ministry Hidden in the music ministry! Love you and Christ bless! We believe: In the infallible, verbal inspiration of the whole Bible and that the Bible is the all-sufficient rule of faith and practice. Every scripture is God breathed. Every writer of scripture was God moved. Every scripture is profitable For doctrine/teaching, For reproof/exposure of wrong, For correction, For instruction in righteousness.
